  • This should be your bottom rig fishing setup! A bottom rig with float will keep your bait above the bottom and make bottom fishing more snag free. I use these bottom rigs for redfish and I believe it is the best bottom fishing rig - especially on a rocky bottom or around oyster beds in saltwater! You may also know this fishing rig as the Santee rig.

    Great idea Steve! I’ve seen a Santee Cooper catfish rig, it uses a float to keep bait up also. Never seen it applied to saltwater, but you’ve definitely Proved it works great! I’ll be adding this trick to my list.👍👍 Thanks a lot!

    Not a bad idea. I’ve goat several of them so I’ll start using them. Going back many decades, my memory is I catch more fish on the bottom hook than on the top hook.. Very impressed you came so close to catching a red on cue. But then you caught two. Not too shabby.

    float and fly works great for smallmouth and largemouth and i even caught striped bass on it all in one day for a bass trifecta. the problem i have is from the banks with it fixed its a pain to cast. i use light line because the bass here are line shy. i want it to be like 10 foot under the bobber with my fake plastics or small hair jig and i dont know the best way to do it so i dont do it much. i also like to fish 25 foot water. so ya. though i think it would save a lot of lost rigs. i just drag bottom a lot.

      Good points. Even a slip bobber can get hard to cast with the stop hitting the line guides

    I'm using this on a Carolina rig below a local dam for trout. I tried the three way rig but got a lot of tangles fishing cross-current from the shore. The float is supposed to keep the hook up of the bottom though. That is my hope. Still a work in progress. This video is proof I am on the right track.

    • @KayakhacksFishing

      Fingers crossed it works out. Tangles are obnoxious.

      @@KayakhacksFishing I've seen folks use rubber bands to attach the sinker to the 3-way as they are easier to break and sacrifice the sinker over the whole rig. Harder to cast probably and I hate losing anything. Non-lead is expensive. Working on it though.👍

    Looks promising. I assume the bobber isn't necessarily buoyant enough to hold the weight up and simply suspends somewhere in the water column. We nearly always use cut bait, so having the already dead bait die isn't an issue, but I could see where this might significantly reduce the hardhead catfish hauls we frequently get on the flats 😎

    • @KayakhacksFishing
      @KayakhacksFishing  2 роки тому

      Yes, you could use a larger bobber if you wanted to float the weight. I use the small ones to float the size bait I use. I do not want to put too much in the water. You could also use a large slip bobber.

    Hey Steve, another great video, gonna give that a try. What I'm curious about is, am I getting senile or have I never seen you pull in a speckled trout? Just seems like all I can remember is redfish (as targeted catch).

    • @KayakhacksFishing
      @KayakhacksFishing  2 роки тому +1

      lol! I wish. The trout do not populate the spots we go to. I don't know why. In 7 years of fishing the marsh off the ICW, I only caught 2 trout.

      @@KayakhacksFishing Do you ever throw a Vudu shrimp under a popping cork while you have your bait soaking? Only problem with that is you can use one to catch 25 trout, but 2 or 3 reds will ruin it. Can't wait to get down to Dare County in the fall and experiment with the bobber bottom rig.

    isnt that a drop shot ?

      Kind of. A drop shot ties the hook on in a particular way and does not use a bobber.
