While I do agree that having Viserys know about Valyria's appearance from dreams or Balerion would be really cool and add a layer of mysticism I think this shows us a bit about Viserys's priorities. Building a model like that and pouring through pages of texts to get it accurate is a massive feat and shows his intelligence, keen eye, and dedication. All qualities would make him a decent king, but he has no passion in ruling. His passion all goes to his personal projects. While Viserys is easy to manipulate I also think a big issue for him is he's just not that interested in being King.
Also the fact that he was able to ride the black dread says alot about him as it was said in the books that only someone who can match balerion's will can ride him so viserys isn't weak as some might think he simply doesn't like ruling
“Robert was neither mad nor cruel, he just had not interest in being King” seems like this is a common thing to happen to Westeros, with such kings’ deaths followed up by some very turbulent times. >.>

When Rhaenyra leaves for Dragonstone, I think it would be a reasonable assumption that she was just going on another leisurely fly about, like she was doing at the beginning of episode 1. Maybe alarm bells should have gone off for them when she didn't return after a few hours, but who knows how long she usually goes out for.
Her rides are probably like 2-4 hours. Dragonstone is during the early morning (assuming the sun rises in the east*) and the council meeting is assumed to be anywhere from 12-3am, leaving a minimum 18 hour round trip (assuming 24 hour days)

I love how subtly Viserys weaknesses are portrayed. He's not an abject weakling, he's just too gentle and sensitive for the role he's been given. He's not stupid, he's clearly thoughtful but also trusting and it contrives to make him vulnerable to manipulation. His flaws could have been hammed up so much more but it's played just wonderfully.
Got the same impression! They did it in quite a nuanced way. He's not portrayed as a blustering hedonist like Robert or entitled and cowardly like Dany's brother Viserys, but like... a man who would clearly much rather be on a permanent vacation, telling dad jokes in a Hawaiian shirt. On the one hand you get it, but on the other hand you feel for the people who are frustrated by his behavior. H

I don’t think many people understand Otto’s goal with the stand-off at Dragonstone. First off, he obviously isn’t there to conquer it with 20 men. It would take months of preparation for a siege, and that’s if he got the go ahead from Viserys, which he definitely wouldn’t. Secondly, he knew that Caraxes would show up and he probably wanted him to. Otto wants to create a rift between the two brothers and the best way to do that is to heat up the conflict between them. Daemon bringing out Caraxes is a massive threat to Otto that Viserys would not look upon kindly. This is also why he doesn’t take the egg when offered, he doesn’t want the egg back. Returning it would cool off the tension, the opposite of what Otto wants. Third, he probably brought the maester along as an extra pair of eyes. Someone else to convince the king that Daemon is starting a war, and that has more influence over Viserys than a kings guard. Edit: not that Daemon is starting a physical war, more of a Cold War between them.

As for how Rhaenyra flew off without Viserys knowing, in episode 1 when she walks into the council he remarks that she smells like dragon. So it's established that she often goes on dragon rides and he isn't necessarily told about them. So she tells the dragon keepers that she's going for a ride, then flies above the clouds out if sight and heads for Dragonstone

It's interesting that Viserys cuts himself on the Iron Throne in the same scene that he drives Daemon away. And now that little cut is spreading and festering, just like the reverberations from that decision. Like the wound on his back in episode one, his neglect, or his reluctance to act on time is what makes his wounds spread and get out of control. It's the little things that make this show cool.
14:46 I know that there was discrimination against Rhaenys on the basis of sex, but something that I got from the text was that Viserys would be a much weaker King. For one, he's dragonless, while Rhaenys rode the biggest dragon currently ridden. Her husband would be hard to control too. The way I saw it, the people calling the shots (e.g. Oldtown conspiracy) were mostly thinking about which candidate would be the worst monarch. Then, once they concluded that Viserys would be their preferred candidate, they used sexism as a way to hurt Rhaenys' chances to be chosen.

The problem is Rhaenyra's power move was a huge signal to Otto that she's NOT someone he can manipulate and isn't someone he wants in charge. Even with a dragon, she still needs allies and she just showed up a very powerful dude.
Unless Otto is even more of a fool than he looked in this ep. he could hardly have expected anything other than hostility from Rhaenyra after he hatched his little plan to make his grandson king of Westeros.

I actually forgot Otto was a second son. Viserys is really marrying down according to feudal tradition. Note how prior to his father's and brother's deaths, they tried to hook Ned up to the daughter of a secondary house, even though his dad was a Lord Paramount.
It makes sense. If Otto was a lord he'd have many duties back in Oldtown. Though by that reasoning Kevan and not Tywin should have been The Mad King's Hand.
I enjoyed the pisstakes, but the blisstakes are an absolute blast. Making fun of something that's bad is comparatively easy, making fun of something that's good is the real deal. Plus positivity just feels nice, I guess? Complaining, justified or not, just eats away at you a bit every time.
About the Otto thing. I think the only possible explaination that does not make him a dumbdumb is that he indeed wanted to fail. He knows he would be the last person Daemon would give that egg to and he clearly provokes Daemon during negotiations. My guess is he would have gone back to the king and reported that he was very nice to Daemon and that he still would not give the egg and that this is really a further insult to Viserys when you think about it. Moreover, if he suspects Daemon really only did it to get Viserys' attention the move to not let the king go and go himself is quite calculated, because Daemon might think it was Viserys himself who did not want to go to him and sent Otto instead: thus, the rift deepens on both ends.
I only recently watched GoT, binged it all in two weeks. A highly ineffective way to watch a show with such deep lore given the limited time for any reflection on events or analysis of subtext. So, i just wanted to say between your channel and Alt Shift X, the expansive analytical content you guys create makes the wider mythos of this world so much more digestible. The statement about "second sons" is more interesting when you consider Ned, Jon, Bran, and Tyrion are all second sons. For Jon & Bran, it's sort of doubled. Jon is Rhaegar's second son and was officially Ned's second biological son, albeit a bastard. Bran is actually Ned's second biological son and officially his second legitimate son.

At first I was really bothered by HotD not having its own intro song because I'm a big believer in the intro being as much a part of the show as anything else, but then I remembered that Game of Thrones and The Dragon Show already shared the same intro anyway, so I guess it's fine.
I think Otto saw going to Dragonstone as a win-win. If he gets the egg back from Daemon, then he looks good in front of the King. If he fails then he can dress up Daemon as a much bigger threat. But Rhaenyra coming in ruined that for him because it made him look incompetent.
honestly with reusing the theme I'm surprised they didn't just... use the Targaryen theme... it seems like it would be a better theme to reuse for this show about Targaryens (also yeah Steve Toussaint is absolutely killing it as Corlys)
I actually think that the idea that older siblings choose the egg for their younger sibling's cradle is really cool. It definitely promotes sibling bonding and I wonder who chose Aegon's egg. The symbolism of older siblings giving their younger siblings power and their blessing is very cool and solidifies family as within the immediate parent/child/sibling rather than cousins or half siblings.
Maybe I am going too 5d chess on this one, but i'd like to think that Otto purposefully went there to try and make Daemon do something stupid, thinking it likely that at the very least Daemon wouldn't kill him because he is the hand. Also it is maybe possible that Otto thought having Ser Christmas Cole, the new guy nobody gives a shit about besides Rhaenerya just yet, there front and center would possibly get him killed, leaving room for Otto to go ahead and install a new one getting his wish.

“Sure this is a spin off show for GOT, in the same universe and setting as GOT, with some of the same creators as GOT, and has the same themes of dragons and political intrigue. But ew gross it has the same theme, if it weren’t for that these two shows would be completely different.” I get that they could have at least been a bit more creative and done a variant of the theme, and I get that season 8 left a bad taste in everyone’s mouth. But the theme is a weird hill to die on, it’s like if the biggest complaint about the Star Wars sequels was “the theme reminds me of the phantom menace”.
To be fair, if there was anything which was still good about the latter seasons of GoT, it was definitely the theme song. I was happy that it’s associated with something good once more.

Like Aegon II might finally be born by Ep 3 but is still a child. And it seems Helaena is a popular one with the greens by book fans. She's the one riding Dreamfyre which I can't wait to see next to Sunfyre. I can imagine Alicent moving way up once the beautiful, Olivia Cooke, takes over. One-eyed Aemond is another important member from the greens. We still haven't seen Laenor 🖤, Laena's brother. I believe he'll appear in Ep 3. Many GOT/HOT D reactors are Black people. Good to see them get more represented. We do see Laenor in the trailers and he's chatting with his cousin, Rhaenyra, along a beach. 💒 It's ironic. Otto Hightower would be my #1 for most hated character on HOT D by a wide-margin. He's despicable. He's the one I want to see die first. He's the real villain to all this. But he would also rank in my top 3 for favorites because I like bad characters if the acting is great and Rhys is great. To me, Matt Smith and Rhys Ifans really carry this show. The rivalry between Daemon vs. Otto carries it. They enjoy trolling each other. It's the best so far until older Rhaenyra vs. older Alicent go at it. I'll admit, HOT D does feel smaller in scope due to we are only following fewer Houses. But I don't mind it. Easier to follow. A lot of my character rankings can change from each season. That's why we need to keep watching. Who knows if I start HATING Daemon and Rhaenyra by Season 5? Maybe Alicent is my favorite by the end? They will all do bad things and they will all die. The End. Off to that next GOT spin-off with more sex, graphic violence, incest, pedophilia, pimping children, parents killed by their children, parents or relatives killing children, and grey characters you either love or hate or love AND hate at the same time. All these rankings are still pending...
My theory is that Daemon stole the egg purely for the incest part (well that and being able to dunk on all the small council goobers and Viserys). He knows the only way they're getting the egg back is with a dragon, so he knows Rhaenyra will eventually show up to save the day. He will give her the egg without conflict and she will look like a big shot, legitimizing her capabilities as a leader and as a future queen. Then he does the incest and his sons are the king. Also I think he fucked up Christy's name on purpose just to give him a little confidence with the obvious retort before Ceraxes shows up and makes Craster Cole shit himself out of fear of becoming Crispy Cole.
I don't really understand how so many people absolutely hate Otto, but seem to adore Corlys. To me they're exactly the same, ambitious, power-hungry, and would destabilise the realm to secure their own agenda. They're also both willing to use their daughters as pawns, which is a big reason for why people hate Otto. Strange.

I think it's got a lot to do with the framing. We see Corlys onscreen during his triumphant and badass moments, we don't see what his conversations with Laena look like. Whereas we see enough of Otto and Alicent's interactions to immediately see not only how he treats his child but also how much it's clearly messed her up - and that he doesn't care.
I think it's possible that Viserys receives the majority of his reports from Hightower. He's easily manipulated so I can buy that he isn't really in the know unless Hightower gave the o.k. (Hightower being in Dragonstone at the time Rhaenyra leaves King's Landing)

Also Aenys' wife, Alyssa Velaryon, remarried to Rogar Baratheon and had two kids with him named Jocelyn and Boremund while post-Maegor, Rhaena remarried to Androw Farman while sleeping with his sister, Elissa. Elissa later stole some dragon eggs and sailed to Essos, those eggs are probably Dany's, while Androw murdered all of his wife's friends and then himself. Jaehaerys and Alysanne's brood was Aegon (died as a baby), Daenerys (died young), Aemon, Baelon, Alyssa, Maegelle (became a Septa), Vaegon (became a Maester), Daella, Saera, Viserra, Gaemon (died as a baby), Valerion (died as a baby), and Gael (drowned herself as a teenager after she had a stillborn bastard). Aemon was supposed to marry Daenerys but she died as a child so instead he wed his half-aunt, Jocelyn and they had Rhaenys. Then Aemon died. Jaehaerys decided to skip over Rhaenys despite Alysanne's objection for their next living son, Baelon. Baelon had married Alyssa and they had three kids, Viserys, Daemon and Aegon. Aegon's birth killed Alyssa and baby Aegon died soon after. Then Baelon died as well. In the meantime, Daella was married off to Rodrik Arryn at a young age because she was a nervous wreck and also simple-minded. Daella died giving birth to Aemma Arryn. Saera discovered vices early and became a royal scandal which culminated with her running away from Westeros and becoming a prostitute in Essos where she had three bastards (that we know of). Viserra was betrothed to the elderly Lord Manderly and after a huge fight with her mother about it decided to have one last night on the town and ended up dying of a broken neck. Rhaenys married Corlys and they had two kids, Laena and Laenor Velaryon. Daemon was married off to Lady Rhea Royce of Runestone. And Viserys married his cousin, Aemma Arryn. They produced Rhaenyra and Baelon (died as a baby) before Aemma's death. So yeah, there's the Targaryen family tree up to now.

I think Otto absolutely did want to fail. The more of a threat that Daemon is, the easier Viserys will be to manipulate.
But if the dragon kills Otto it won't be his faction doing the manipulation, so it doesn't make sense.

While I do agree that having Viserys know about Valyria's appearance from dreams or Balerion would be really cool and add a layer of mysticism I think this shows us a bit about Viserys's priorities. Building a model like that and pouring through pages of texts to get it accurate is a massive feat and shows his intelligence, keen eye, and dedication. All qualities would make him a decent king, but he has no passion in ruling. His passion all goes to his personal projects. While Viserys is easy to manipulate I also think a big issue for him is he's just not that interested in being King.
Also the fact that he was able to ride the black dread says alot about him as it was said in the books that only someone who can match balerion's will can ride him so viserys isn't weak as some might think he simply doesn't like ruling

When Rhaenyra leaves for Dragonstone, I think it would be a reasonable assumption that she was just going on another leisurely fly about, like she was doing at the beginning of episode 1. Maybe alarm bells should have gone off for them when she didn't return after a few hours, but who knows how long she usually goes out for.
Her rides are probably like 2-4 hours. Dragonstone is during the early morning (assuming the sun rises in the east*) and the council meeting is assumed to be anywhere from 12-3am, leaving a minimum 18 hour round trip (assuming 24 hour days)

I love how subtly Viserys weaknesses are portrayed. He's not an abject weakling, he's just too gentle and sensitive for the role he's been given. He's not stupid, he's clearly thoughtful but also trusting and it contrives to make him vulnerable to manipulation. His flaws could have been hammed up so much more but it's played just wonderfully.
Got the same impression! They did it in quite a nuanced way. He's not portrayed as a blustering hedonist like Robert or entitled and cowardly like Dany's brother Viserys, but like... a man who would clearly much rather be on a permanent vacation, telling dad jokes in a Hawaiian shirt. I don’t think many people understand Otto’s goal with the stand-off at Dragonstone.
First off, he obviously isn’t there to conquer it with 20 men. It would take months of preparation for a siege, and that’s if he got the go ahead from Viserys, which he definitely wouldn’t.
Secondly, he knew that Caraxes would show up and he probably wanted him to. Otto wants to create a rift between the two brothers and the best way to do that is to heat up the conflict between them. Daemon bringing out Caraxes is a massive threat to Otto that Viserys would not look upon kindly. This is also why he doesn’t take the egg when offered, he doesn’t want the egg back. Returning it would cool off the tension, the opposite of what Otto wants.
Third, he probably brought the maester along as an extra pair of eyes. Someone else to convince the king that Daemon is starting a war, and that has more influence over Viserys than a kings guard.
Edit: not that Daemon is starting a physical war, more of a Cold War between them.

As for how Rhaenyra flew off without Viserys knowing, in episode 1 when she walks into the council he remarks that she smells like dragon. So it's established that she often goes on dragon rides and he isn't necessarily told about them. So she tells the dragon keepers that she's going for a ride, then flies above the clouds out if sight and heads for Dragonstone

It's interesting that Viserys cuts himself on the Iron Throne in the same scene that he drives Daemon away. And now that little cut is spreading and festering, just like the reverberations from that decision. Like the wound on his back in episode one, his neglect, or his reluctance to act on time is what makes his wounds spread and get out of control. It's the little things that make this show cool.

For one, he's dragonless, while Rhaenys rode the biggest dragon currently ridden. Her husband would be hard to control too. The way I saw it, the people calling the shots (e.g. Oldtown conspiracy) were mostly thinking about which candidate would be the worst monarch. Then, once they concluded that Viserys would be their preferred candidate, they used sexism as a way to hurt Rhaenys' chances to be chosen.

I actually forgot Otto was a second son. Viserys is really marrying down according to feudal tradition. Note how prior to his father's and brother's deaths, they tried to hook Ned up to the daughter of a secondary house, even though his dad was a Lord Paramount.

About the Otto thing. I think the only possible explaination that does not make him a dumbdumb is that he indeed wanted to fail. He knows he would be the last person Daemon would give that egg to and he clearly provokes Daemon during negotiations. My guess is he would have gone back to the king and reported that he was very nice to Daemon and that he still would not give the egg and that this is really a further insult to Viserys when you think about it. Moreover, if he suspects Daemon really only did it to get Viserys' attention the move to not let the king go and go himself is quite calculated, because Daemon might think it was Viserys himself who did not want to go to him and sent Otto instead: thus, the rift deepens on both ends.
I only recently watched GoT, binged it all in two weeks. A highly ineffective way to watch a show with such deep lore given the limited time for any reflection on events or analysis of subtext. So, i just wanted to say between your channel and Alt Shift X, the expansive analytical content you guys create makes the wider mythos of this world so much more digestible. I am now entirely convinced to read all of the books, despite not being much of a fiction reader. Thank you and keep it up, you're fucking awesome.

The statement about "second sons" is more interesting when you consider Ned, Jon, Bran, and Tyrion are all second sons. For Jon & Bran, it's sort of doubled. Jon is Rhaegar's second son and was officially Ned's second biological son, albeit a bastard. Bran is actually Ned's second biological son and officially his second legitimate son.

I think Otto saw going to Dragonstone as a win-win. If he gets the egg back from Daemon, then he looks good in front of the King. If he fails then he can dress up Daemon as a much bigger threat. But Rhaenyra coming in ruined that for him because it made him look incompetent.

I actually think that the idea that older siblings choose the egg for their younger sibling's cradle is really cool. It definitely promotes sibling bonding and I wonder who chose Aegon's egg. The symbolism of older siblings giving their younger siblings power and their blessing is very cool and solidifies family as within the immediate parent/child/sibling rather than cousins or half siblings.

I get that they could have at least been a bit more creative and done a variant of the theme, and I get that season 8 left a bad taste in everyone’s mouth. But the theme is a weird hill to die on, it’s like if the biggest complaint about the Star Wars sequels was “the theme reminds me of the phantom menace”.

I think Glidus is right that they should have got Ramin to tweak it a bit.
To be fair, if there was anything which was still good about the latter seasons of GoT, it was definitely the theme song.

Daemon and Rhaenyra are #1 and #2, and it's not even close after that. It's like Elvis and Top Gun: Maverick for me this year in movies. Far and away my favs. Riding Caraxes and Syrax helps adds to their swag.
We still haven't seen enough characters yet. Like Aegon II might finally be born by Ep 3 but is still a child. And it seems Helaena is a popular one with the greens by book fans. She's the one riding Dreamfyre which I can't wait to see next to Sunfyre. I can imagine Alicent moving way up once the beautiful, Olivia Cooke, takes over.
One-eyed Aemond is another important member from the greens. We still haven't seen Laenor 🖤, Laena's brother. I believe he'll appear in Ep 3. Many GOT/HOT D reactors are Black people. Good to see them get more represented. We do see Laenor in the trailers and he's chatting with his cousin, Rhaenyra, along a beach. 💒
It's ironic. Otto Hightower would be my #1 for most hated character on HOT D by a wide-margin. He's despicable. He's the one I want to see die first. He's the real villain to all this. But he would also rank in my top 3 for favorites because I like bad characters if the acting is great and Rhys is great.
To me, Matt Smith and Rhys Ifans really carry this show. The rivalry between Daemon vs. Otto carries it. They enjoy trolling each other. It's the best so far until older Rhaenyra vs. older Alicent go at it. I'll admit, HOT D does feel smaller in scope due to we are only following fewer Houses. But I don't mind it. Easier to follow.
A lot of my character rankings can change from each season. That's why we need to keep watching. Who knows if I start HATING Daemon and Rhaenyra by Season 5? Maybe Alicent is my favorite by the end? They will all do bad things and they will all die. The End.
Off to that next GOT spin-off with more sex, graphic violence, incest, pedophilia, pimping children, parents killed by their children, parents or relatives killing children, and grey characters you either love or hate or love AND hate at the same time. All these rankings are still pending...

As much as I love LML, Preston and Alt Shift X, this is by far my favourite breakdowner of things. Keep up the good work my guy.
My theory is that Daemon stole the egg purely for the incest part (well that and being able to dunk on all the small council goobers and Viserys). He knows the only way they're getting the egg back is with a dragon, so he knows Rhaenyra will eventually show up to save the day. He will give her the egg without conflict and she will look like a big shot, legitimizing her capabilities as a leader and as a future queen. Then he does the incest and his sons are the king.
Also I think he fucked up Christy's name on purpose just to give him a little confidence with the obvious retort before Ceraxes shows up and makes Craster Cole shit himself out of fear of becoming Crispy Cole.

I don't really understand how so many people absolutely hate Otto, but seem to adore Corlys. To me they're exactly the same, ambitious, power-hungry, and would destabilise the realm to secure their own agenda. They're also both willing to use their daughters as pawns, which is a big reason for why people hate Otto. Strange.

i think it’s that ottos vibe is more “slimey” whereas corlys is more open about his ambition and power grabs
I think it's got a lot to do with the framing. We see Corlys onscreen during his triumphant and badass moments, we don't see what his conversations with Laena look like. Whereas we see enough of Otto and Alicent's interactions to immediately see not only how he treats his child but also how much it's clearly messed her up - and that he doesn't care.
It's a thing when you get analysis with knowledge and passion for the source material that also makes you laugh your ass off.
With every line Glidus further convinces me that this was an excellent casting choice

I think it's possible that Viserys receives the majority of his reports from Hightower. He's easily manipulated so I can buy that he isn't really in the know unless Hightower gave the o.k. (Hightower being in Dragonstone at the time Rhaenyra leaves King's Landing)
