Crafting a Royal Funeral | Behind the Scenes - S2, Ep 2 | House of The Dragon | HBO

- Showrunner Ryan Condal, director Clare Kilner, actress Olivia Cooke (Queen Alicent Hightower), and more take us behind the scenes of the chaotic opening of episode 2, and the funeral scene where Queen Alicent Hightower and Queen Helaena Targaryen’s (Phia Saban) emotions are on full display.
That shot of Helaena in the vail looking up was indeed beautiful
When I first saw it I thought it was a shot of queen Alyssane
Can't think of a prettier shot in any game of thrones stuff.
Was looking for a comment mentioning the shot hidden somewhere to see if I had company. Thank you.
Absolutely one of the best scenes in recent years, it's so simple but carries so much... the cinematography in this show is next level, even the GoT series feels like a child's work compared to this.
@@johnnygreenface4195 Chill out now. Or do you mean close up to face shots? Because then I can agree with you. If not, both Game of Thrones and HoTD have better wider and establishing shots than face close ups.

The BTS crew are truly the unsung heroes of this show. The amount of work that goes into making this beast of a show is just staggering. Kuddos to you all ❤
who are the sung heroes?
The cast
Ehn. They get their praise as well. The cast fame brings both good and bad things so most crew members arent envious of them or anything. If they were, they would have taken more spotlight careers.
You just can't beat an HBO production
Best in the business
Quality over quantity indeed
HBO? you mean max ?
Aegon's destroying viserys model of old valyria is a great metaphor showing his son destroy everything his father put together both the model ,and the realm.
It's not like Viserys was good king he was bad king
lmao, jaehaerys was the one who put up and made the realm at least at peace, viserys didn’t do sht in fact he is the one to be blame for all this.
@@queenxx1690
At least better than the usurper in every way possible
@@RedGanjaX
LOL the Greens are to blame for this sh_. Viserys made many mistakes including bringing the Greens to the picture but they destroyed everything.
@@queenxx1690 LOL there are so many bad Targaryen kings...Viserys had a good and peaceful couple of years on the throne. His inability to provide the foundation for Westeros to accept a ruling queen was his biggest mistake but there are so many cruel Targaryen kings that he seems like a really good king by comparison.
I'm comforted to know that it was a destruction prop and not the og model!
That model is going to be sought after many collectionist
They’ll be boxing up the original model and charge fans $$$ to see it on a studio tour.
@@c0ronariu5Yes they will and yes we will pay to see the model, I want to see Valyria goddammit 😂
I myself want the LEGO version! Considering the price of many Star Wars sets, I think you’d have to mortgage your house to buy it…
Seeing the head sown back on was chilling
At least, the kid had a proper funeral though, unlike a Robb Stark who got his wolf head sown for mockery reasons.
@@nont18411 Or the fact that the Blacks had to use Luke's clothes for his funeral
@@Lionstar16 but only the death of jaeharys was horrible, luke died in a snap

the close-up shot of the flower petals falling from the sky as Helaena looks up at them in the funeral procession looks bit like the ashes that would fall like snow in king's landing centuries later when Daenerys burns the city. I wonder whether Helaena had foreseen this at that moment.
That scene was also repeated in this same episode when Rhaenyra watched the dust in the air
I think they are omens of the dance of the dragons because the petals and dust happend in kings landing and dragonstone.
@@eu_balaena yes I agree
they are NOT using the original game of thrones ending as inspiration for the whole dany storyline in hotd. they clearly know how important she is going to be in the future books (if we ever get them) but they will not use the disgusting show ending as their motivation. why would they include dany's pyre scene in haelena's dream, or even the beginning of the show, showing that it takes place some years before daenaery's birth. why would they include all that shit if it just meant dany was gonna go "oh no missandei dead im going to burn kings landing!" like no... please use some sense
@@3nnikthey’re Targaryens … they’re known for their fiery spirit Every one knew she was going to burn the city … you don’t “Break the wheel “ with peace
The Funeral scene remined me of Princes William and Harry made to walk behind Princes Diana's funeral in front of the entire world.
Heartbreaking
Me too!! As the council discussed strategies to win the sympathies of the smallfolk I had this awful thought of the royal family doing the same after Diana’s death and using her sons as their pawns. It was chilling.
yeah....they were just children that must have been soo traumatizing for both of them
@@TheRoaring4orties They weren't used as pawns. Phillip asked both of them if they wanted to walk in the procession as he had done the same many many years ago for his own family and advised them they may regret it if they didn't. They weren't forced. In fact the British publics behaviour in the week after the death of Diana was abhorrent. The Queen stayed at Balmoral with the boys and was being blasted by the media for not returning to London and doing all the things the Queen should've done after a royal death instead of understanding the fact that she was at Balmoral with her grandsons who had just lost their mother. The media and the public demanded spectacle.
@@anna_luin when you are kids, you don’t have a choice. A “suggestion” from your parents isn’t always a suggestion, some people know what I’m talking about.
Wasn’t expecting the ‘good’ brother to win and def wasn’t expecting him to end himself right after
I'm not even sure that was the Black-aligned brother. There's a reasonable argument, imo, that could have been the Green brother as well.
@@ineednochannelyoutube2651 50/50 is reasonable or a stalemate.
@@ineednochannelyoutube2651actually you're right. If it was the green brother, perhaps the guilt plus wanting his brother to die honorably at his queens feet was enough to convince him to do it. Not only that losing a twin probably feels like you can't go on any further in life. Didn't realize both brothers suffered leg injuries.
What do you mean good brother ? They are both good, and loyal
he’s the ‘bad’ one
We are slowly seeking Helaena dip into madness
Being able to see the end of your family dynasty and the deaths of everyone around you is probably enough to drive anyone mad. Similar to how the Mad King went the way he did because he probably saw the near end of Westeros.
@@KP-zd3hcthe Mad King was already evil
Phia Saban is an incredible artist! What a performance, these two episodes!
the twins did an AMAZING job with the acting this episode, i was crying before i could even realize what was happening.
The brothers duel was probably my favorite thing the Francise has put to screen. It was just so epic and just such a tragedy.
ikr!!! Not just the physicality of the fight itself was impressive, but the emotion those 2 were able to demonstrate~! those 2 guys literally gave that scene all they had and were acting their tits off! that actor's delivery of the line "Your Grace.. forgive me..." - WOW. I was tearing up so much!!! That acting! That combination of just exhaustion with just pure depletion of the will to live. It straight away transported me to the end of the Red Wedding and the delivery of the line "Mother." followed by Catelyn Stark/Tully cutting Lord Frey's wife's throat before howling... and then just... dropping the knife.. and going limp. These character's souls had already left their body and departed the world, and are all simply waiting for death with a "just get on with it".
Calm down 😂 It was a generic Hollywood sword fight
Heleana is such a kind hearted soul and overwhelmed by it all. She's the only one who has no blood on their hands in all of this.
LMFAO “Who’s the better swordsman?”
“If I could tell them apart maybe I’d have an opinion” 😂😂😂😂
RIP Visery’s Legos ❤
I know Alicent had children young, but it is sometimes strange to see Olivia, Phia, and Tom playing mother and children when they don't look very far apart in age.
if they added a couple streaks of white hair for alicent and krispy, i think it should do it
Didnt help when Otto said he had lost a grandson, technically isn't it his great grandson?
@@joepierson406
oh, good catch. that's a dialogue error 😹
Alicent was said to look young and slim for her age in the books, also seems like she was a young mum when she had them so it sort of checks out.
@@Nicholas_Chen_
the actors and actresses are actually close in age irl, so that's why they look about the same generation on screen. i wouldn't mind a subtle change in alicent's appearance just to make her look more like their mom and not older sister. olivia cooke is literally only 1-5 years older than the rest of the cast who play her children
don't make me emotional guys.....this is so heart warming yet so informative ...it shows the work put behind each little scene and i just want to say I APPRECIATE IT.
Seeing this behind the scenes footage of the actors laughing and clearly enjoying themselves (not to mention, seeing the artists actively building the sets) is the perfect thing to balance out the deep dread and sadness this show invokes 🙌👏
The Twin Knight fight was brutal I was sobbing the whole time they did a brilliant job indeed
I could not stop commenting on the brilliant costume design in this episode. Well done to the team!
The superb lighting this season is helping them out immensely. Nice to actually be able to see the work all these fantastic artists are creating for the series

The attention to detail of mirroring the injuries but trying to make it subtle!! Rowley is on a whole other level
I like the idea that it was Arryk who killed himself, and his final line was an acknowledgement of Rhaenyra as queen and an apology for not supporting her ascension.
Yes, I too like the idea of Arryk who had no where to go but either death or triumph and last forgiveness. He knew there was no turning back and he will die one way or the other. So he chose to kill himself out of shame. Hehehe but it’s ok to know that Erryk won but same, he can’t live with the outcome he killed his brother so he asked forgiveness. What a true honor to die for his Queen.
Why would he acknowledge a person who he believes assassinated a toddler? Where is the logic in this?
The people who work on this show are nothing short of geniuses.
yet they're paid shit in comparison to the cast. Ingrate profession in many ways despite creating pure magic behind the scene
The fight between craglly twin was tragic yet amazing at the same time two honorable men cause in war of targaryan family so heartbreaking seeing their brothehood tears apart 😭💔.
I want to believe Arryk was the one who killed Erryk (knight under Rhaenyra) and sought forgiveness by acknowledging her as queen in the end just like his brother
@@Relixification Why would he seek forgiveness from a person who he believes assassinated a toddler? Where is the logic in this?
@@rexibhazoboa7097 better question would be; when was it mentioned that Arryk believed Rhaenyra assassinated the toddler? Go watch the scene again, and tell me what Arryk says before he drew his sword.
Just wanted to say that it's really cool that you are posting these episodes of 'The House that Dragons Built' on UA-cam for free this season.
Dragonstone looks actually so epic , I like the castle way more than the red keep in kings landing
the effort that goes into these sets is unmatched. just makes watching the show so much better
As a father of twins, the Cargyll Bowl was a devastating scene. 😢 Well done all.
The new Dragonstone sets are phenomenal and the costuming continues to be top-tier. I especially liked Alicent's necklace and earring set seen in the second half of this episode.
The commitment from the writers/actors for the cargyll twins's send off is what we wanted for Cersei and Jamie's send off...
"Farewell, My Brother" - A sad song about the twin Cargyll brothers.
In the song, before Arryk boards the ship to return to King's Landing, the brothers try to persuade each other to change sides. When this attempt fails, they exchange declarations of love and part, knowing that when they meet next, it will be as enemies.
This show just keeps getting better; acting, storytelling, production design. Its all stellar and such a breath of fresh air from the dross Disney have been churning out. Just shows that throwing money at a property doesnt create a good end product.
The amount of effort and detail is amazing. Also I like how they are including the emotional side.
don't know why people were so into cleganebowl when it hits so much harder when you love your enemy. THIS is how conflicts should be set up - when you can't bear to root for either side because you're really rooting for both. the last time i felt this way was when Bronn aimed the scorpion at Drogon. I wish the show gave us more to root for the Greens, instead of usurper vs rightful heir. other than Helaena, majority of the green characters are quite unlikeable (hypocrisy is hard to swallow).
Costumes and Castles look so fantastic this season.
Shout out to the production crew for their creativity design ,and details behind the scene of the show
we appreciate their hard works❤.
This episode was insanely amazing, Clarke Kilner did an AMAZINGGGGGG JOB I’m so excited for her episode 5!
Was an absolutely brilliant start to the episode. From the score, to all the people being round up by guards, the tension in the air, Aegon losing his shit. I had chills the whole time, it was amazing.
Long shot... but Halaena looking up at the fodder falling is her dreaming about the ash after Dany torches the place
I mean they are currently on the precipice of a war of dragons. Why wouldn't that "dreaming" refer to her current and future situation? Rhaenyra has a similar scene this episode
beautifullll helaena, breathtaking, heartbreaking😭😭
Thank goodnoess for the bts. Brings some relief to the madness even though it is fictional. I love seeing the work the crew does and the actors break out of character
What incredible attention to detail in the production!
and then watch Rings of Failure or the Wokelyte and see how many 10s of mill dollar more wasted in bad costumes and set designs!
@@johnbernhardtsen3008 lol..... u crybabies keep crying about it every week so they definitely won.....
love that these bts episodes are more about the crew’s accomplishments and creative choices over writing motives like GOT’s bts - highlights entertainment excellence without lessening the watching experience
This is awesome. Thank you to everyone who worked on this series.
The brothers fighting was beyond amazing. It was a fight that they knew even if won, they lost. Second most emotional thing I've seen in a while.
As a book fan, this is my favourite episode. They kept most book stuff and only added the bits where the books leave gaps. I episode 1 because of the changes at the Blood and Cheese scene, but I honestly understand the changes and enjoyed the show. I understand show only watchers saying they got bored but boy am I loving this. This is a proper adaptation. Show only watchers made us believe Game of thrones season 7 and 8 were great until we told them just how crappy they were, so they aren't to be trusted.
The green queen drives me so crazy! Testament to Olivia cooks acting though!
Its such a shame a lot of GOT fans didn't come back fro HOTD it clearly has just as much passion behind it from every angle, and the story is a once in a lifetime experience. When else would we get a multi-decade tale of realm so rich in history ... and DRAGONS!!!
I hope for season 3 we do more natural lighting those pre-color grade shots of the Spain location were gorgeous without betraying the gravity of the scene
Phia killed that scene!
That shot of the queen's veil is just stunning
Glad the actual model is still intact lol
So much goes into this. Thank you for sharing some BTS work. 👍🏾
The Twin fight was absolutely phenomenal, huge shoutout to the actors for doing AMAZING work
What an amazing episode!! I LOVE all these BTS! Massive well done to the whole crew!
I love these behind scenes docu series. So interesting. My word! the work that goes into production and the scale! I hope we get them every week🙏
Thank you so much to the BTS team for capturing all this and showing it to us every week. So incredible to see the hard work of all these talented individuals and the breakdowns of why certain decisions are made. HOTD is the best thing on TV in years!

I am loving these behind-the-scenes videos
Rip Arryk and Erryk😢
the acting and visuals in this episode are top tier
Amazing work. Such talent!
Excellent job! Can't wait for the next episode :)
The work put into the fight scene was honestly amazing. Great choreography, great direction and amazing work from the twins. I like that by the end, you honestly can't say which twin is which and which one killed the other. It legitimately could've been Arryk or Erryk at the end, and worked either way. Beautifully done.
It worked either way because both were duty bound and had the same loyalty just on opposite sides, so whoever won u felt that both still lost, a major theme of this season is love and family being neglected and sacrificed in the name of duty
18:52 CLARE❤ you are good at this.Well done.
Brothers.You guys just nailed it.😢
Amazing episode. Very tense.
I'm watching only pieces of the fight between Erryk and Arryk here, but I'm still tearing up like I did when I watched the full thing. Excellent work by Elliot and Luke.
i felt though that the funeral was cut short and didn't reached a peak ...i was expecting that walk of shame vibe of Cersei...
But as always I salute this whole series production for always delivering a MAGNANAMUS episodes 👏👏👏
Mygod what a beautiful work!
Tom has killed it what a performance
This so very well put together, im still ashamed of what happen to GOT with the last seasons but this is gorgeous.
Loved the fighting choreography of the twin battle, it felt brutal and real.
The funeral scene was so beautiful
Just by looking at the twins' eyes, you can feel the pain and emotion that you can't help but feel for them.
More Crafting BTS please and a playlist. Art Dept ROCKS!
Amazing episode. I have no words. HOTD is becoming something else
Wonderful production. Just awe inspiring really 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽.
finally, we see Helaena laughing
HBO, give those highly professional people a raise! They're proved they truly deserve it. 🤯👍🛐
Poor Helena even tho I’m on team black
Actually, y'all messed up. Go rewatch it. Erryk is cut on his right leg on the outside. When Arryk gets his cut on his leg at 1:03:42 he's cut on his right leg yes, but on the inside not the outside. Unless somehow you're trying to tell me he cut the outside of his right leg with a right handed slash....
1:43 is all i wanted to know ! Thank goodness!
They cut a scene for episode 2 from last week's preview in which Haelena takes Alicent's hand and runs from the crowd after panicking during her son, Jaeherys's funeral procession!!
I think its a trailer only scene
pretty sure that’s a scene in a later episode bcuz they have different outfits from the funeral procession
That scene wasn't meant for the funeral
It was meant for the Kings Landing riot that is about to happen later episodes hence why this episode has so many smallfolks stuff in it
You can clearly tell the difference from the outfit and the time of day
Personally, I wish the show could have prolonged the twin battle scene a little longer so that we could have more screen time with each of them and learn more about their characters and reasoning for picking the sides they each chose. I just don’t think we had enough time with them to really make an attachment that would make their final scene that impactful. Hearing that their fight scene was named “searching for love” and how they directed it in a way where both brothers fought reluctantly, trying to keep themselves from taking each other’s life and fighting mental games in their head trying to understand why the other brother chose the side they chose so that they can make peace and not kill each other. That’s really interesting details that I feel like I only got from this BTS video and not enough from the actual show. So RIP to both twins, I loved the outcome of their story but I just wish it wasn’t this soon before we really got to know each of them on their own.
In the books they are also barely given a sentence or two before the final fight. If anything the show did a great work subtly presenting them in season 1. There are limitations with the time they have and the characters they must focus and the Cargyll brothers, sadly, are tertiary characters.
In the last season, the show made it clear that Erryk didn't like Aegon because he assumed Aegon visited fighting pits and also had bastards there, so he chose to support Rheanyra who he believed was a better person and he doesn't know of any bad thing she's done. Arryk on the other hand kept true to his vows and didn't let his personal opinions on Aegon interfere.
Best episode
