  • Taipei, Taiwan has one of the most efficient and reliable MRT or public rapid transit systems in the world.
    Locals are used to the convenience but if you are visiting either for a short or extended time to Taipei you are in store for a comfortable, safe, and easy way to get around the city.
    There are 5 main lines of the Taipei Metro which consists of a mix of underground and above ground infrastructure with a total of 108 stations. This does not include the airport service as this is a separate entity called Taoyuan MRT.
    I highly recommend downloading either the IOS or android Taipei MRT app available in The App Store and Google Play. This will help you plan your day while you’re having a coffee in your hotel room or at breakfast. All of the stations are also searchable online with full descriptions including in most cases major sites that are close by.
    You can purchase single journey tokens but you’ll save alot of time, especially if you’re traveling during rush hour, to pick up either a TaipeiPass card or an Easycard. You can purchase TaipeiPass cards at any MRT station and at most convenient stores including 7-Eleven. They are available in 1,2,3, and 5 day unlimited use cards. There is also an additional 1 day + card that can be used on the Maokong Gondola next to the Taipei Zoo. These passes are for unlimited use on the Taipei Metro, not including bus routes with four digit buses for their time frame so there’s no lead to load or reload them.
    TaipeiPass Cards:taipeipass.travel.taipei/?lang=en
    If you’re planning on taking some bus trips or train rides to Northern Taiwan besides using the MRT then you may want to purchase an Easycard instead for NT$100. You’ll have to load money onto it but the EasyCard is more flexible than the TaipeiPass. EasyCards can be purchased at all MRT stations.
    Using the Easycard gives you a 20% discount on single journey fares on the MRT and 10% on local trains to Keelung and Ruifang. Keelung has one of the most famous night markets on the island, Keelung Miaokou Night Market. Ruifang is your connection to Pingxi, home of the world-famous Sky Lantern Festival.
    EasyCard:www.easycard.com.tw/en/
    The Taipei MRT system operates between 6am-12am but service ends earlier at some stations. Here is a link that gives the last train time for each station:english.metro.taipei/ct.asp?xI...

    I'm so happy to hear people talking about my hometown!!! Few more things to add:
    In general, the train announcer actually tells you when there are significant tourist attractions for particular stations. Usually it means that the attractions are close by or you can get a shuttle to it. This is especially important for Shilin Night Market because of the potential to get off at the wrong station (although it's literally 1 stop away, and you can still catch a shuttle to the market even if you get off at Shilin instead of Jiantan). The announcer will say this, so pay attention!
    Also, it is possible to go negative on your card. So if you only have, say, 5 NT on it but you want to take a 30 NT trip, you can still do it, but you'll end up with negative 25 NT that will be taken off the next time you reload. The limit seemed to be between negative 50 to 75, since that's what happened to me once when I tried to go negative on a Taoyuan airport MRT trip: I knew I'd go negative to minus 75, and the turnstile at Taipei Main Station didn't let me out that time, so I had to recharge at the info booth there.
    Taipei main station also has a few cab stations. There is a main one outside of the west entrance (or east, I always get these confused haha), and one underground near the Taoyuan airport metro platform. If you want a cab, go there, since it's technically illegal for cabbies to pick people up anywhere else around the station (although people still do that).
    For long distance bus, you have to go across the street for the Taipei Main Bus Station (or something; never taken one of those before), but there are municipal bus stops on the street level.
    Betel nut is a stimulant fruit that you can chew, but don't swallow it! It tastes pretty terrible, but holy shit it really really perks you up! When I tried it, it gave me a massive headache like I've just injected 5 espresso shots right into my blood. It is very commonly used by cabbies and truckers who need to stay awake; I once met a fishmonger who stayed awake for 3 days straight by chewing on betel nuts. It is commonly banned because of the blood-red juice it produces, which people would spit out. You can find the unsightly red stains on pavements in rural/less developed areas or on some roadsides.

    Hi John, thank you so much for this great video! I get so confused by public transit as I live in S. CA and drive everywhere, and your video makes it much more easy to understand.I have tried to find this answer online, but can't seem to find the answer. If take the MRT from the airport, do I need to transfer in order to get to Guting Station? My hostel says it's only 3 MRT stops away, but it looks like there are many stops. Also, if you use the MRT card, how does it know how much to charge you since the price is based on distance? Sorry if these questions seems so basic, but I don't have much experience with this. Thank you so much! :)

    • @iamjohnsaboe
      @iamjohnsaboe  6 років тому +2

      Debbie C hi! You will need to transfer from the Airport MRT at Taipei Main Station in order to get to the Guting MRT stop. Best way to do this is to leave the Airport MRT Station once you arrive and head for Beiman MRT Station on the green line. There are directions everywhere and you can also ask at the MRT counter. They can speak enough English to give you instructions on how to get there. It’s a 5-10 Walk and from Beiman Station it’s 4 stops to Guting. The MRT gates calculate fares based on where you entered,(stop), and where you exit. Don’t worry about that, it’s all automatic. Because the Airport MRT is separate from Taipei metro you will check out there with your Easycard and check back in at Beiman Station. Good Luck!!!

    Hi if I add $200 bills in NTD on the card will it be enough for 2 weeks ? And if I add more and don’t use the card will it work months or years after that when I return ? Do they have free maps or sell them of the subway system?
    I’m also taking the high speed rail when I get to the airport in Taipei DONT they have the HSR at the airport? It’ll be more convenient for me
    Does that include No water as well?🙄 I mean what if I start choking to death😂😂😂
    Thanks

    • @iamjohnsaboe
      @iamjohnsaboe  Рік тому

      HSR does not go to the airport. The Airport MRT does. I don’t think 200NT will be enough for two weeks on the MRT however you can keep adding on at any station until before you leave. No maps that I’m aware but you can download the Taipei MRT app on your phone that includes a map. The money left on your card will be good for months later but I honestly don’t know for how long based on your activity. It might very well be good past a year but I don’t know for sure.
