Should mention that there is a cool add on for the Karoo called “ki2” that effectively adds back in Shimano di2 support. It’s technically side loaded, but works pretty seamlessly and the developer doesn’t charge you for it. Super easy to install.

I was honestly really hoping for a lot more. I know this is a great device, but it just doesn't seem like a massive step up from my 830, which does everything I want and more. I guess this is good; I no longer have the itch to upgrade.

One comment about review: you sometimes compares with 1030, and sometimes with K2. This is annoying because it's not always clear which devices you are talking about. Subject of the movie then suggest direct comparasion with K2 only therefore it's misleading.

My dream Garmin Edge 1030 plus, but with pairing capability to a bluetooth speaker.. (ie: JBL flip/charge) That way it could call out audible turn-by-turn directions when navigating.. This would improve safety for cyclist because they wouldn't have to take their eyes off the road when coming up to turns.. And for those off us who have visual impairment (can't see the street names) and (can't see that tiny text on the GPS, the Audible turn-by-turn would make a $600 Garmin a usable tool.. As it is, I can't see anything within 5 feet... No problems seeing the road, cars, stop signs etc.. Just can't see the Garmin or read the names of the streets. Audible would fix that problem.. Most don't need the fitness info/stats... Most casual riders just want to get from point A to point B safely. Having Audible turn-by-turn would make that possible for so many riders..

I bought an Edge 1040 Solar. The sensor dropouts are real. It's a constant problem and I've had to replace all of my sensor batteries twice in the 31 days I've been using the Edge 1040. That screams some sort of communications problem. The % Grade is inaccurate, making all of the climb data equally inaccurate. You'll find that you were putting out 400 watts on a 0% grade, then 0 watts on an 8% grade because that part of the hill is already 1000-2000 feet behind you. Garmin said they aren't going to fix that on the Edge 1040. The Solar is a gimmick at best. If you set it in the sun it'll get too hot and stop charging. And on a sunny 100 mile ride I see around 43 minutes of charge from it while the battery drops around 22% overall.

I've got the 1030 plus & I'm happy with it. Your absolutely right... the additions don't justify a purchase. I'd also add that some of these features should be added to older models through firmware, but where's the money in that, lol.

Great review, thanks👍 have Garmin changed anything on how to scroll on the map? I have an 830 and find it almost impossible to scroll and pan the map without having to pull over - at that point I just use my phone. Having to push on the screen to change to pan mode, then if you try pull down, the garmin quick menu for sensors etc appears, same if trying to press to zoom in and out (goes out of map scroll mode) - everything at the top of the screen interfering with each other.
Such a terrible UI design, or at least it doesn’t suit me 🥴

After my second Garmin Edge 520 died unexpectedly I decided to try something different - the Wahoo ELEMNT Bolt instead of the Garmin 530. Boy! I'm glad I did. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxXZCtB-wGdHVTBSz8RswePK5vllHNi06N The display on the Wahoo Bolt is much easier to read. I like the configuration of the display more (up to 7 items visible on page 1 without scrolling and the first item chosen is larger characters than the next 3 rows that have pairs of items (still very readable). I also like the configurable item selections. The Bolt synced with my Garmin ANT+ Speed sensors on both bikes easily so no additional investment was required there. While the rated battery life is a couple hours less than the Garmin 520/530, I easily get a weeks worth of 1+ hour rides before recharging (and it's never really low on charge). At the end of a ride syncing to the Wahoo app, Strava, and Apple Health app is painless.

I was also about to order K2, but some serious shortcomings like small battery life when paired to radar and bunch os sensors, slow CPU, OSM only maps (no contour lines), inability to upload a track via just bluetooth and companion app, etc, put my purchase on hold. Also, what I like for Garmin is the MyBikeTraffic CIQ app, which shows statistics for the passed cars when Varia radar is active. So, will probably wait for x40 models and then decide finally.

Great unbiased review. New to cycling and not currently running a computer. Here in the uk the 1030+ is reduced in price and now the same cost as the k2 possibly due to the 1040 release unless its just a limited time sale. Might have to look into the 1030+ following the drop in price and overall cost of the 1040.
Keep up the great work 👍

Sticking with the Karoo 2 but not upgrading the Karoo software due to them pulling Shimano dI2 features off the computer. Shimano/SRAM infighting, they can kiss my butt. I still have the dI2 visuals and I’m enjoying it. $700 USD for the 1040? Well I guess the sky’s the limit since Garmin priced the power pedals RS200 at $1000+. I invested in that. No regrets. Karoo 2 is somewhat buggy. It only lets me upload either the Karoo ride or the Cyclemeter ride to Strava. Shut off the cyclemeter link and the Karoo is giving me good stats. Uploads quicker to Strava than to the Karoo dashboard. Still the screen is great and I like clicking from screen to screen with my shift buttons. Good reviews. Appreciated. Maybe I’ll upgrade next year to the 1040. Maybe their next model will be $1500! Greed versus need.

this new garmin seems ideal for adverture and ultra racing, 3 week delay here in europe the demand has been that high ? this 1040 solar device solves a lot of problems that other bike computer companys have not been addressing, though expensive, they are always one step ahead of the rest and compared to the rest they also do a very resonable customer support, I was very well looked after for a replacment V3 pedal bodys and garmin 1030, no petty behaviour, and it was the same from any of my friends who have had issues with garmin devices so in that sense its money well spent, pity samsung couldn't do the same, chalk and cheese?

I hadn't got a Garmin bike computer (or any bike computer) but I do have one of their watches and want to stay on the same infrastructure. I've got some long bike rides planned and so having it for navigation, with the larger screen and the better GPS will be beneficial
I wanted the newer model and because I managed to get the Solar with a 6% discount, the price gap wasn't as big. I would've got the Solar anyway as I can just leave that by a window to charge up. There was the 1040 bundle with the three sensors (not available with the Solar model), but I didn't see the benefit of that over the non-solar version if the choice was between those two. One thing that is probably a benefit is the higher capacity, but whether that is all needed is another matter
The only thing I would like is if my unit for my e-bike had Bluetooth or ANT+ so I could connect it to the Garmin and be able to see my battery level, range, and power level more easily

Great review on the 1040. I bought the 530 edge just before the 1040 came out. The 530 is ok though I am not super impressed with the battery life . I had to implement battery saving which I find annoying as I cant see the screen clearly. I am running a few sensors including a Varia light which could be reducing the battery life on my current device.
I am a big fan of the 1040 solar option, though its a huge jump in price vs the standard 1040.
I live in a sunny climate so a upgrade to the 1040 is on the cards later this year.

I've tested both the K2 and the 1040 (non solar). Before I had the K1 and the edge 1000.
Attention : the new. K2 and the new 1040 are more difficult to read in many situations than the older units!!! That's crazy. Backlight on the 1040 also is much weaker than on the 1000.
Battery life on the 1040 is only 9 hours with the backlight at 100%!!! Not 50 hours. For me that's a no-go.

It was hard to justify purchasing a Solar for $150 extra, for essentially 10 hrs. battery life. As note when you purchase the Solar it seems they throw in the rubber case as well as that hinged out front mount, which is actually the mt. bike mount designed to install backwards so that the device sits over the stem, thus the hinge to adjust for different stem angles. I was lucky, my LBS offered a BF deal at 20% off on a 1040, so I grabbed it and will sell my 1030. I saw it as future proofing.
