Me too. I hate wasting 12-18 minutes of my life only to hear some fence sitting conclusion in the end. I also subbed for this, though the casual humour is awesome too
Thanks for comparison, after 1:19 I already decided: I don’t need glossy screen, I need something with big buttons (otherwise I already have iPhone), I don’t need solar power for few hours weekend trips.
I recently purchased the 1040 solar & love it. At first I thought is it too large but quickly realised its not. It has great font size & so easy to read the display .. especially with my not to great eyesight.
Accurate on both devices. But, the 1040 has a bigger screen, which makes selecting the target easier. Go with the 1040 unless you’ve spent all of your military budget on the pilots MARQ.
If you don't need all the training bells and whistles you could also go for the Garmin Edge Explore 2. Bigger touch screen than the 840 for a lower price with most of the features. I've had mine for a couple of months and I love it.
Ok cheers. I got the 840 - I need reading glasses and ride only with sunnies so I thought the 1040 would be better for its bigger size, but it looks just too big for me. 3xcited to get my new edge.
I have two questions, you answered one: 1) No extra data fields, although larger font. 2) Is there a difference in screen readability in direct sunlight?
just watched your videos, falling in love with them. could you please suggest something about my 5 years son, he wants to become a cyclist, what equipments I could buy indoors? if so which ones should I buy
I started with the 1040 solar and realize that it was hard to see on cloudy days with my Oakley Road on. I tried the regular 840 and found it too small for my taste. I went back and got the regular 1040 because it's a bit brighter and easier to see over the 840 and the 1040 solar.
Another significant difference that no one talks about is the inability to load custom OSM-maps in IMG format and UTF-8 encoding into the Garmin 840 device. Garmin 1040 does not have such problems :(
I have a Brytonrider that promised to be as good as the garmin 1030, but the software is shocking. I would you be able to advise on a GPS as a replacement? I have only had he bryron for less than a year and because the nav forest work, we haven't used it.
I'm months late to the party but go to a safety supply company and ask them about safety glasses with built-in readers. I've been using the Nemesis from Kimberly Clark for a few years now and they're perfect. Price can't be beat at about $10 and they're quite aerodynamic as well.
Good comparison, thanks. It's too bad Garmin didn't bring larger fonts to the 840 like they did on the 1040...well I suppose they need to give it some edge.
I think that you forgot to mention that the 1040 solar doubles the memory of the non solar. you may say that you don't need that much memory but I travel in both America and Europe and with all the maps loaded, including Climbpro, my 1040 non solar is full.I also know that you can remove and re-install maps as needed but it's a pain in the ....
Hi! Do you think Garmin had better understanding with the training status, metrics ..than edge 830? I feel works very bad, with no sense messages, or aerobic/ anaerobic loads many times not correlatives to the workout you did... So not sure if know its better Thanks
@@MatthewLenton update: Local Garmin dealer was supposed to have the 540/840 available by now so I went yesterday to pick one up but he had none so I asked him to show me the 1040. It’s on my bike now, mounted on the stem of my mountain bike using Garmin’s own mountain bike stem mount, which is similar to the road bike mount that comes in the box but reversed. The 1040 is exactly the length of the stem, a perfect fit. Loving it.
What about adding ANT+ devices like AXS, hearthbeat monitor, etc.? What would be the battery life if I pair these Garmin's with a hearthbeat monitor plus my AXS system?
Whatever battery life I quoted is based on garmins intensive use scenario. I don’t think heart rate monitor and electronic gears integration is particularly challenging on battery life (versus screen brightness and the gnss satellite tracking).
After my second Garmin Edge 520 died unexpectedly I decided to try something different - the Wahoo ELEMNT Bolt instead of the Garmin 530. Boy! I'm glad I did. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxXZCtB-wGdHVTBSz8RswePK5vllHNi06N The display on the Wahoo Bolt is much easier to read. I like the configuration of the display more (up to 7 items visible on page 1 without scrolling and the first item chosen is larger characters than the next 3 rows that have pairs of items (still very readable). I also like the configurable item selections. The Bolt synced with my Garmin ANT+ Speed sensors on both bikes easily so no additional investment was required there. While the rated battery life is a couple hours less than the Garmin 520/530, I easily get a weeks worth of 1+ hour rides before recharging (and it's never really low on charge). At the end of a ride syncing to the Wahoo app, Strava, and Apple Health app is painless.
Entertaining and informative as ever. Will the 830 get the new climb pro stuff in a software update? I'm in the market and can't decide if 840 is worth the extra cash over the 830...
You could also load all the Garmin segments in your vicinity, same result...better actually since you can face off with the segment leader, contacts or yourself.
when using all 10 widgets on the screen, one is duplicated "Time of day"... is this normal? Are there (at least) 10 different widgets to choose from? Thanks
I'm struggeling to decide, which device suits me best. I've got an Epix 2 and am wondering, if there is something in the Edge Computers, what the watch doesn't have? There is only the bigger display, right?! But with your recommondation of the 1040, your "answer" is clear - buy a additional device for cycling and use the watch for everything else, right?!
I have the Forerunner 955 and the Edge 1040 Solar because it's easier to see the distance and time and also the map if I'm using it for navigation. The watch I tend to use for any non bike activities
I ride a velomobile and as such, my bike computer will not see much sunshine. However, I do like the larger screen of the 1040, so the decision was easily made. I just don't like how Garmin artificially makes the solar version better in several ways. Add the protective sleeve and the extra memory... It is as if they know themselves that the solar bit is a bit of a gimmick. I completely agree with you that battery life is now so good throughout the range, that solar really does not add much. Unless you are on a cycling holiday and don't have access to a power outlet for a week, then solar begins to make sense.

The fact that you gave the answer in the first like minute was great. I liked and subbed cause that was so simple thank you

taking your words for it. subbed before the video
It is soo refreshing to see someone soo effortlessly funny, having a blast reviewing cycling gear! Glad to have people like you in the community :)
you gain a subscriber with your original humor, is very nice to have your content available, comes in very handy

The tactical air strike call, made me suscribe 😂. Cheers from Colombia. 🇨🇴
How accurate are these air strikes?
Accurate on both devices. But, the 1040 has a bigger screen, which makes selecting the target easier. Go with the 1040 unless you’ve spent all of your military budget on the pilots MARQ.
Does air strike can be lunched at nagging wife... who prevents me from getting garmin 540 solar? 😂

How are you coping with no ambient light sensor on Explore 2 - that's the only thing I am a little bit worried about.
I have one and in general it's great, especially screen size. however I miss climb pro and other training features on the explore 2
Ok cheers. I got the 840 - I need reading glasses and ride only with sunnies so I thought the 1040 would be better for its bigger size, but it looks just too big for me. 3xcited to get my new edge.
Great video, though it was the Pelvic Nudge that got you subbed... LOLLL
entertaining and informative thank you
Got my answer within the first few minutes, stayed for the rest of the entertaining review!
Thanks for the reviews and videos I am updating from the bolt v2 to the Garmin 1040
Thanks, Excellent presentation!!!
I have two questions, you answered one: 1) No extra data fields, although larger font. 2) Is there a difference in screen readability in direct sunlight?
there is not , its the same screen just bigger
I love how you start the vid with: THIS is the only difference and now I am forced to waffle on for 10 minutes because of an algorithm 😂
just watched your videos, falling in love with them.

Interesting. Thanks. I've been ok with visibility but I'm not sure Solar is worth paying the extra for (for me).
really, is there a big difference in readability between sunscreen and non-sunscreen?
@@Rorolap it’s a little bit duller is the best explanation I can give. Is it huge? No, but it is noticeable and for me not worth the money.
840 слишком маленький? Неудобно смотреть карты?
Difference in length in imperial, just over a choad 😂
Interesting that when you buy the solar you get a silicone case but not if you get the normal 1040
Funny and interesting dude, you are… subscribed
Would you say the Karoo is better than 1040 for Training and Navigation? It is 100€ cheaper at least. Thanks for nice test video and information
Screen is darker on the solar versions. If you live at the basement or attic of the globe, it’s not worth it imho.

Being over 50, I have massive problems reading without reading glasses. I guess that makes the 1040 the preferred choice?
That wasn't the only reason I went with a 1040, but it certainly was a consideration.
Recommend stick-on plastic bifocal lenses for your sunnies. I've used 'em for most of a decade with no complaints.

As of today (18th June), the 1040 is on garmin with £50 off at £469 and the 840 is full price at £449. No brainer…..
Damn, looks like I've missed it.
I was in a similar boat, got the 1040 at $715AUD where the 840 (which I was waiting to buy) costed more. Dont regret it at all
3:10 in the video “just over a chode” lmao 😂

Pricing here in Australia is interesting
Is there a feature in the 1040 that allows you to display maps and "data" (what is described in the video as fields) at the same time?
Maybe the 1040 will look less “huge” if installed on the stem of the bike. I’m still debating which one to get :-(
I have mine installed on the stem. It doesn't stand out

Is it true that it’s better value to get the 840 and have the choice of buttons? Just smaller. I like big screens but 1040 may be too big.

No I don’t believe so. The feature relies on a huge map file and the 830 doesn’t have the capacity.
@Sportivecyclist hmm, from one non-pro, +4% bodyfat MAMIL to another ill probably get the 830 tbh
You could also load all the Garmin segments in your vicinity, same result...better actually since you can face off with the segment leader, contacts or yourself.

For the data screen there are loads of fields to choose from. Far more than 10. I think I just missed the fact I’d selected the same item twice.
Leading at 1040
Devil’s avocet..😂😂😂😂😂 I am stealing this

Cant decide between 1030 and 1040 🥲
Avoid 1030. Either 1030+ or 1040
840 vs bolt2
All good but where’s mine Monty? 😀
