Great review and a different perspective. Yes, the USB-C is in a bad location and you can’t charge it but you can charge it through the quarter mounter turn while riding.
The two buttons on top of my Di2 hoods can be programmed to control almost any function on my 830 I am sure it will be the same for the 1040.
Very true. That Di2 button control is actually fantastic. Thanks for watching this one Eli J!
Pretty sure Ray said 3 minutes gives 3 hrs runtime if you “forgot” to charge it, but honestly for 40 hours that’s a ton of battery life plus they sell the battery pack that goes on the bottom
Matt stumbled across your channel your doing great reviews. Thanks for all you do! I wish you more subscribers
Thank you so much Simon! It’s nice having a small group here. I feel like I can chat with people a bit easier. Keep me posted on any topics you’d like to learn more about. 👌
I just bought the edge 1040 solar and am really impressed with the setup and the usability after one ride.
Awesome. It is a very nice device. It should also get all the latest and greatest software as Garmin continues to develop these features. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Thanks for the review. Good content 👌🏻
Thank you so much Jeremy! Hope you are doing well. 👍
I have the 530 and waiting for a 840 before replacing it even though it is working fine. To be fair the 1030/1030+ has been out for over 2 years now and Garmin never trickles down any new options unless it is a relatively recent device. The pricing is high but if I remember right the 1030 was $600. Just found your channel and enjoy your videos.
Thank you EB. Yes, you’re correct. The 1030+ was also 600. Same as the new non solar option. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Thanks for a great review. I was hoping the new 1040 would have had a predictive climb feature like the hammerhead. Maybe a little unreal but I was hoping too it may have had some mobile phoning/cellular feature, so I can leave the actual phone and accompanying weight at home. I agree with your point that for the increased cost it should provide some serious game changing features rather than a tweak-up of the software
Yeah, I had high hopes that they'd steal ideas from the Hammerhead K2 and from Wahoo. Maybe next time? 😬
I have Karoo2, but I'm so extremely dissatisfied with Climber feature that I stopped using it and went back to my (very) old Garmin - it shows completely inaccurate and totally misleading climb profile on every single climb. Utterly useless.
@@bostjankozuh - Very interesting Bostjan. I have both and haven't noticed the lack of accuracy in the Climber feature but I also haven't been watching it all that closely to check for accuracy. I have noticed that it's a little slow to pick up a climb but I like that it'll show the Climb screen even if I don't have a route programmed in. (which is almost every ride). The 1040 would be a really nice option if you end up selling your Karoo 2. Thanks for the feedback and keep me posted on what you figure out. 👍
@@mlegrand It is indeed strange. Whichever climb I ride I get really nonsense inaccuracies - like showing donwhill section on a stedily (steep) uphill climb, gradients very wrong, etc. On the map it looks like the climb is identified correctly, so it's not that the data would be due to wrong climb identification.
Just bought the 1030+ at the discounted price a few weeks ago. Had a little concern about missing out on new features, but now that I've seen the 1040 reviews I'm glad I went for the 1030+.
Glad you got a good deal on a very nice computer. Keep me posted on how you're liking it and thanks for watching this one Dave!
Great Matt ! As usual beautiful video. Do you know if we can charge it when "off" ? I mean for a bikepacking expedition. Stoping the ride at 5pm, and let it charge till 8pm for exemple with the sun ?
According to the DCR review the answer is "yes"
Yes, that would work. It might be a slow charge but when you turn off the device it’ll actually display the solar amount for a second so you can orient the device towards the sun as best as possible. 🔋 🌞 👌
Looks like I'll be getting one of these, I'll sell my 1030 edge plus to recoup some of the cost. 1040 solar FTW! My reading vision isn't what it used to be so I need a large screen. I love the data fields you can download from IQ connect.
The solar is pretty cool. I think you'll really enjoy this device. Hopefully the 1030 will also find a good home. Let me know what you end up thinking of this one! Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
The biggest disappointment is the price. It really needs to come to the point you suggested. $499/599 is about the high retail for this. The solar at $750 USD is beyond reasonable. I think they shot themselves in the foot and gave away potential sales in the light of the market.
I agree but there's also probably a market segment that'll just buy the best computer regardless of price. We'll see how it goes and we'll see if/when Garmin updates the 530/830 devices. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Large discounts can be had. I just ordered the 1040 solar for €519 via a discount program by the Dutch ING bank ("Rentepunten").
Currently investigating on a bike navigation for my CX bike. Saw this review. Subbed. 😎
Thanks so much Mario! What are you thinking for the CX bike? Maybe something smaller than this? I don't have any insider info but I'm hoping that Garmin updates the 530/830 soon.
@@mlegrand Indeed, the size might be a factor worth considering. While I assume it will offer lots of comfort on the road, the size might be a limiting factor on gravel and forest roads. I'll take some time to consider all important aspects (and and surely look through more of your reviews).
You make valid claims, this is a very well done review. Cheers!
Dude your b-roll is getting so good
Thank you so much! And I’ve been loving your channel. I wish I had caught you when you visited Portland. It would have been fun to film something with you. Next time!
For me, who bought my first cycle computer, I opted for the Edge 1040 and I am very satisfied with it. He is exceptional in every way - Garmin is Garmin...
I opted for the one without Solar technology, because I thought that the extra value would not be worth it in my case.
But I don't think it's worth the upgrade for people who have the 1030 or the 1030 Plus, or even the 830. The amount spent on the upgrade would never be worth it.
Excellent review, congratulations!! I used it when choosing :D
I think the 1040 non-solar is a very smart call. It is a very very nice computer and I think you’ll really enjoy it. Keep me posted on what you think. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
I always had trouble seeing/reading the 1030 Plus screen in very bright sunlight, especially if the sun is directly overhead. Are the 1040 screen text and navigation colors easier to read while on the bike and moving at speed? Also, even if the Garmin has more features than competitors, most of the features are useless once one is on the bike and out in world riding. When I had my 1030 Plus, I recall having to stop the ride and stand there for a while trying to get the thing to navigate me to a destination. Heck, just entering in an address on the unit was absolutely inane.
Good point Terence! Navigation might be a bit faster. The screen is really similar. I don’t know if you’d notice a big difference. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
You bring good points bro. The idea to change batteries is good. This product is a very expensive investment and I will be disappointed if I can’t use it after its internal batteries are not lasting.
I hope you are continue recovering for your surgery bro and we can see you running soon 😁
Thank you so much! Can’t wait to get out and run at some point.
Excellent quality. Very easy to assemble.
👍 - Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👌
Great video. The is more of an iteration vs a total redesign. Super frustrating. Imo the solar one isnt worth the money
Yeah, that's a big ticket item. I would have loved to see a design adjustment. It would have made me very excited about this device. It's still an impressive computer, it's just not all I had hoped. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
all the "new" functions could have been put in the 1030 plus.... same size, same bezels, same resolution, same technology screen.... this is 1030plus v2
I was hoping for more. 😢 I do have to admit that this has been a nice computer to ride with over the past 2 weeks. Thanks for watching and commenting Toni. 👌
Yup
Garmin is not putting the new function on any of the older products.
Yeah dude I wanted the 840 but loads of places in the uk were sold out so I just picked up the 1040 for like an extra 20 bucks. I’ll have to get used to it not having buttons. :(
I'm surprised the 840 is out of stock but the 1040 is also a fantastic option. And it's nice to have the extra screen real estate.
Hi! Thanks for your review. Is there a successor of the Edge 1040 in the pipeline that you know of? I'm thinking of upgrading from my Edge Explore 2 (hoping for a better brighter sharper screen) and the 1040 launch is a year old now so maybe something better is in the making...
Not that I know of. 🤷♂️
@@mlegrand well maybe something will be announced before summer 😊
Hi Matt,
I just found this useful review and I’m in the market for a brand new computer. In one of the comments you say you advise people a 530/830. I’m currently wearing a Fenix 6X 24h/day…besides viewing a map while riding, what benefits will a Garmin bike computer add on top of the watch? Or is wearing a watch while riding just an extra benefit??
You can do most everything with a Fenix 6 but it’s so nice having a dedicated display out front in my opinion. I wear watches while biking as a backup but only use the cycling computer for tracking, mapping or data display.
Good news is you could use your Fenix 6 without really missing anything for a while. Then see if there’s some really amazing Black Friday deal or holiday deal or if Garmin ever updates the 530/830.
@@mlegrand Thanks for taking the time to reply! Glad to hear the watch is very useful as a backup and totally agree that a display in front is much easier than looking at the watch while riding.
Bonjour, It seems that the mount I have on my Garmin 1030 will not fit the new Garmin 1040?
What kind of mount do you have? The Garmin quarter turn mount should work with the 1040 fine. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Matt how do the wahoo computers compare to the garmin computers? I have a garmin 830
I have a video about the 530 vs the Wahoo Bolt V2 and I think Garmin devices have more features but Wahoo has better buttons and ease of use in a lot of ways. I think that's why I was a bit disappointed here. I was hoping that Garmin would take some notes from how Wahoo has set up their buttons. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
and The IQ plugins from 1030 plus are compatible? or each developer has to adapt it....
Hey Toni, I haven't heard of any changes needed to connect IQ apps yet but this is all still really new. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Excuse me if I’m Too late to the party. Nice review of a nice device. Considering to buy it for my road and mountain bikes but worried it’s a bit too big for mountain biking. It seems that you’ve used it on the stem of a mountain bike, does it feel / look too big ? Any issues with vibrations?
No issues on my MTB so far with it being on the stem. But you might also look at the 840 if this feels a bit too big. 👌
@@mlegrand yes, writing for the 840 to become available but the screen Realestate on the 1040 is appealing. If the device can be mounted on the stem of a mountain bike then the size won’t become an issue. Thanks again.
IMPORTANT: The older devices (830, 1030, 1030+) will NOT receive any of these new software features / interface improvements. In my opinion this is a shit way to treat your customers who bought a 1030+ a couple of months ago and goes against the way they have handled updates in the past. Bad move Garmin
Yeah, I can't imagine exactly why each of these features would be held back by hardware. 🤔 Thanks so much for posting this in the comments. People need to know these details.
@@briskwalker What is different about it? I read DC Rainmaker's review and it sounds like the new Forerunners have the same multi-band as the Fenix7/Epix 2.
@@LeeBoris974 For multi-band, you have to buy the high end Fenix7/Epix2. There are F7/E2 versions without multiband. And they still cost twice as much as a Forerunner 255 that has multiband. So Mr. HP was right, he was speaking of "base models".
They are 3 or 4 years old. What did you expect. A free upgrade. Good business model.
I’m surprised that Garmin wouldn’t bring the UI across to the 1030+ in a bid to save development effort across two platforms. I think leaving the new features out of the 1030+ is fine but creating a better UI would be in the interest of both parties given what Karoo are doing I would have thought.
it's a great bike computer imo, might just need few updates. Gps trace should be more accurate, maybe you got some settings wrong
Ok the changes are not drastic compared to 1030+, but it was the same thing between 1000 and 1030, 1030 and 1030 plus and so on... Maybe this is good for those who don't upgrade everytime!
I'm just kinda disappointed that they removed virtual partner and the 3D orientation mode, which was laggy anyways so not such an important loss.
Good points Captain Buli! I just wish they'd consider moving some of the buttons up a bit like they had on that Edge 1000. I know those buttons had issues but the location was actually better. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Is the Bryton Rides S800 a alternative price wise?
The Bryton Rider S800 is $400. Here's my review on that device: ua-cam.com/video/pm7128Dl6YU/v-deo.html
i like the solar but i am using my edge 810 until it dies
i like that the case is included, i had to buy it extra for my 810 a year after i got it
Yeah, solar is super interesting and this seems to work well. It's awesome that you're getting such good value out of the 810. Use it till it gives out!!!
The case is included only with Solar edition, not the regular 1040. As for solar frankly I think very very few people will make any meaningful use of it, I find it a total gimmick. The battery life is very good without solar, and for long multiway trips it is easy to carry a power pack to recharge over night. Think long and hard what difference Solar will make for you and I doubt you will conclude it will change anything other than costing you $150.
@@mlegrand still used my 810 as well. it just died 5 days ago after 10 years. came to this review in search for a reasonable replacement. thanks for your sensible review. i have the feeling, coming from an 810 the 1030+ has more than enough features for my use.
@@larsholst6147 - Yeah, the 1030+ on discount right now is a good option. Keep me posted on how you like it. I wish the 840 / 540 would drop soon. I’m really looking forward to seeing whatever Garmin does next. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
@@mlegrand the only feature i will miss, i suppose, might be to put the data screens together off-unit. but coming from the 810 it will be slightly simpler on the 1030 i hope. so, feasible.
where is the Cyclo comp with lte, 64gb storage and spotify offline?
The Hammerhead Karoo 2 has an LTE option. It’s not something I’ve tested. 🤷🏻♂️ Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Suits my needs perfectly
It is a very nice device. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
A bit late to the game but how do you find it when on your mtb..? I’m struggling to find Anyone really talking about it😅 I ride enduro and general trails as well as gravel and I’m unsure about the size…
I've used it on the stem of my mtb and it's been fine. It might be more sturdy on an out front mount. I'm not sure. More recently, I've been using the new 840 which you might also want to consider.
Will solar, constantly recharge degrade even more the batery ?
Not that I know of. I haven't heard any details on how the solar effects battery longevity. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
@@mlegrand it's constantly recharging. Would you plug and unplug your phone every 20m or every hour. 🤔
My Wahoo Elemnt’s battery died and I made the jump to Garmin 1040 since I own an Epix. I’ve always used Wahoo.
Honestly, so far, I am very happy with it. I don’t know the pain of the old UI but I was up and running in 5 mins. It was a bit pricey, but when I think about the amount of money I used to spend at the pub, it becomes hypocritical 😂
Yeah, it's amazing how fast money can fly at the pub. Hopefully you're enjoying the Epix. It's been a great watch for me so far. The 1040 is a solid computer. I think it'll work well for you. I do miss the buttons of the Wahoo computers. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
@@mlegrand Thanks for making the content! The Epix is also great. Just feels like surely Garmin is sucking me into their ecosystem.
Great video. Saludos
Thanks!
if I can now buy a 1030 Plus for 299 (in the UK), is this the best option to go for right now.....
That sounds like a pretty amazing deal to me if you’re in the market for a bike computer now. Seems like a good option. I’m really looking forward to seeing what Garmin does with the 530/830 series but who knows when those updates will come. 🤷🏻♂️
I have the 1030+ since it came out and it seems that the 1040 is not worth upgrading. I think that the 1040 is more evolution then revolution and that is a bit of a bummer imho. The unit looks the same as the 1030+ and is quite thick and the bezels are still huge. I missed opportunity to bring something new. It would have been great if the starting point of a new edge device would be a small smart phone and try to take it from there and make it usable for a bike computer. I like the back of the device with the metal mount. I also like the usb type C port. For the money I don't know. For me, as a 1030+user, It is a bit underwhelming. With this improved battery life a killer screen with high resolution would be justified for the price of the top model. Maybe I will buy it one day but not any time soon, I think. Great review by the way. 🙂
Thanks for checking out my review Barts! I agree. There's some nice upgrades here but it's not an amazing update. It'll be interesting to see what Garmin does with their 530 /830 updates. 🤷♂️
HOLY FLIPPING HELL, $750!!!!?????
Oh, metal twisty bit, that is nice!
That's a pretty good trade off! 25 minutes per hour in the daylight!
I agree, costs too much Bob!
Doesn't the Hammerhead have a water proof USB C?
YES on the degradation of the battery. That's why I never use mine! SAVING IT. (I know, that is a bit of a ridiculous strategy)
Yes, Hammerhead K2, the USB port should be water proof. 😬 I’ve heard of people having issue and I’m not willing to test it with mine but in theory water shouldn’t kill it.
You might love this one because of the crazy battery life. 🤷🏻♂️
You could get a lezyne mega xl and have 3 extra hours of battery life.
And then buy a second one, and then a third before you get to the price of the 1040 solar. 🤣
@@galenkehler - I need to test that device!
Just forget the Solar gimmick and it is $699. Still not cheap but same price as previous model.
2nd comment….. would you recommend buying either of the 1040’s if you’re upgrading from an Edge 1000? Or should I go Wahoo Roam…
I'd definitely consider the 1040s. They are very nice options. I like the button configurations on that Wahoo Roam but I'll also be curious to see what they do on the next iteration of that device. 👌
Thank you
Thank you
You're welcome Jose! Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
If I buy this product here in the USA, can I navigate anywhere else in the world? Do I need to download any maps ?
Typically you would download regional maps to the device using that Garmin express app. I would double check what maps are available for the 1040 because it’s not something I’ve tested. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Note- I bought the 1040 non-solar, and it did not come with a silicone case protector
Oh that's interesting. Good to know. Sorry for the misinformation. Keep me posted on how you like the non-solar version. That seems like the more reasonable purchase. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Can you “reverse course” on the device now, so you can ride a course you have on the device backwards?
You can’t do it directly on the device as far as I can tell. If the route was made in Garmin connect then you can do it on the computer. I’m sure that’s not what you had in mind. 😬 I’m pretty sure its available on Wahoo devices as well.
@@mlegrand that’s sad for a $600-750 gadget.
@@ZillaYT - I’m guessing they’ll add it at some point. They just need to find a balance between features and bug corrections.
@@mlegrand the feature has been requested by the Garmin Edge users to no avail.
@@ZillaYT - I’m sure it’s on a short list somewhere over at Garmin HQ.
If you were going to upgrade from the Garmin 810, would you still be disappointed, or blown away?
I’d be disappointed with the price and blown away with some of the features. It is a nice device. I’ve been using it very frequently lately. Is your 810 dead or can you squeeze any more life out of it? I’ll be curious to see when and how Garmin updates that 800 series. It’s got to be coming here at some point. 🤷🏻♂️
From an 810, I reckon blown away.
How do I remove the flashing blue arrow on the Garmin edge 1040?
The flashing arrow is a prompt to start recording an activity. It can be turned off by changing the timer start mode from prompted to manual in Settings>[your activity profile]>Timer start
Thank you. I didn’t realize there was another two buttons at the bottom of the unit next to charging port since my silicon case was covering them up.
An other disappointing is history after upgrade from 1030 to 1040 I had 546 activities and 11000km now I have 59 activities and 2045km why?
That is a very odd sync. I wonder if they limit the size of syncing history. Hopefully everything is in your Garmin Connect account. 👍
Should we buy the solar or not?
I wouldn’t personally.
Wow it doesn’t include the aero mount?! Was included for the 540 I bought…
*530 , my bad
Is the aero mount the one that’s designed for the aerobars? So small and sideways?
@@mlegrand nah it’s basically a normal mount designed for round handlebars. Garmin just calls it aero
@@hankschrader2353 - There was two mounts in here, an out front and one that sits on round handlebars and could be tilted up a bit. Didn't look super aero. 🤷♂
@@mlegrand ah i did not see the all out front mount in the „what’s in the package shots“

What do you think of the 1040? Are my complaints valid?
@@mlegrand I agree on the astronomical price, hence I don't have it (I have the 830). I Button location is the same on previous Edge touch-screen models so I like the consistency. Are batteries replaceable on other brands? You have a 15 min video and spend the last 5 mins about disappointments, so I think you've mis-represented it with the title. I'm considering upgrading to a 1040 so this video, despite the title, hasn't convinced me from a feature standpoint, except for the price of course.
I think if you own a 1030(plus) it isn’t worth the upgrade. However, when you like myself own a 820 it is worth it for sure.
I agree. I had the 820 and I had lots of issues with that device. This 1040 is quite an upgrade!
I suggest to buy a discounted 1030 or 1030+. Saving money for the next 1040++ :-)
Does this mean price drop on the 1030? 🤔
Yes it does. $150 off 👍
It bothers me more none of the new features flowing to the previous series than the prices of this new models...
Yeah, I should have mentioned that in my complaints and dislikes even if it isn’t specifically about this unit. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
So what you are saying is to buy the 1030 Plus?
Frank, I don't know what I'm saying. My video don't have that much focus. I think the discounted 1030+ is a good option but I'd maybe hold out and see if/what the 840/540 has to offer. When were you thinking about buying something?
@@mlegrand I’m in the market now but I value your opinion and recommendations. No rush, so I’ll wait. At the end of the day they are all expensive items and I want to ensure I’m getting the right one.
@@FrankJackson - I'd say it depends on a lot of factors. If you live in a really sunny location, the Solar 1040 is a really nice option. I live close to Portland Oregon where we get a lot of overcast and rain. I'd probably save the extra 150 and go with the 1040 or the 1030+ or even one of the more basic models. I typically recommend the 530 to a lot of people because it's a good price/feature but I have to think Garmin would update that series of computers soon. 🤷♂️
"You suck as a cyclist!".. 😂 that's harsh. I guess that would be my "ability" state, permanently 🤪
You’re the only one that’s noticed that so far. I just snuck it in there to try to be funny. 😆 Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Most important question. 1040 working in rain ? 530/1030 .. nope. Touch Screen not working when I riding in rain, I not say have problem, or have low precision. Its not working
Oh man, that's frustrating. You probably mean 830/1030 as the 530 doesn't have a touch screen. Here's what I want: Touch screen + 5 buttons so that I can fully navigate the device either way. Thanks so much for watching and commenting Piotr R!
@@mlegrand yes, my mistake 830. All touch screen device from edge series. Idk how ppl in country like UK use this device :D 🌧⛈🌧🌦🌧

Yes, multiple languages. Which language in particular are you looking to use?

Ok, you're right. I don't see that option. It may be available in the APAC version of the 1040 but I only see English. Typically we'd install the Chinese_Mandarin.ln4 file but I don't see where to get that for this new device.
got 1 sent it back after 1 day its awful 1040 base is the way to go
Good call TopB. Glad you figured it out quickly and saved some money 💴
I'm not sure what the value of the solar is. If you're really doing multi-day you'll have some other power arrangement (dynamo hub, real solar charger, battery bank) to charge other devices and lights.
Good call Galen. It's $150 extra. That seems like a lot to me. (there's also more memory) But I think it's a hard sell. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Just purchased a Karoo 2 and I think that’s the better value right now. Unless ur a Di2 user! 🤬
Yeah, that Di2 announcement was bonkers. The K2 at $400 is looking like a very good option. Let me know what you think.
Another comment with my pro chan for an other point of the video 😜 The touch screen : the biggest fear I would have to switch from my wahoo to this kind of gps : the sweat or the rain : I have absolutely no idea if yes or no it work well on this device : I can't think to something else than my phone which turn crazy in this kind of situation 😂😂😂
I'd say it works pretty well but it's not going to be perfect in rain. I was riding in some hard rain here and it struggled a bit. Having optional buttons to do everything is the way to go. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
@@mlegrand Garmin sells the Edge remote device. I use it all the time. It adds buttons and is very helpful with thick gloves. Also in heavy rain I lock the screen and rely on the remote only. Works just fine for me. Actually the way you can locate the remote it is more accessible that reaching for the screen and I use it all the time, even in good weather with bare hands.
@@MrMartin246 - I'll have to try it!
Those other companies with the cheaper prices will probably not be around for long. This is their high end model so yes the price is reasonable in a market where cyclist spend $2,000 on a pair of Carbon wheels.
Good point imixmag. Cycling is a pricey sport. I wish it weren’t so crazy expensive but it does tend to drift towards pretty high prices. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
$2000? When can I get some of those?? :)
I had a 1030 Plus and the software on the unit never work right then had a up date on that unit! “”””” I want to get a 1040 but I hear and read that the software still Suck! On these new unit! :(
I haven't had a ton os issues with my 1040+ but if you have the 1030 it might be worth keeping for a bit longer. Thanks for the great feedback Steve. 👍
That unit I took back after 5 days that was 2 years ago. So I was on Amazon this morning early Friday Black Sale Garmin 1030 Plus just the unit $399.00 plus I took the 5 months payment plan with Amazon I going to try it again! I have not been riding for the last 18 months was in a Very bad Bike wipe out on 4/1/21 before that I was use a Wahoo Roam V1 no problem with software on that until at all! Only thing the screen is small and no color at all. I give the 1030 Plus until 30 days if not return and get the Wahoo Roam V2 :)
@@steves4321 - sounds like a good plan. 👍
Say Matt, I have another question. You know how the Garmin watches have started doing the Stamina tracking, yeah? How hard is it to have the watch talk to the Edge and talk to the cell phone app? Does that all work in real time?
XOX O
I don't think that's an option that I've seen from the Garmin Connect app. It would be cool. Did you figure out a bike while you're here? I have one mountain bike and one road bike that I think would fit you. They come with all the latests sports tech toys on short term loan.
Look at the size, thickness, bezels, etc, ect of modern phones and at this thing. It looks like a PDA from 20 years ago! The responsiveness is also absolutely no match for modern smartphones.
Hi Ron, to me it does kind of feel like a smart phone because of the size of the screen. For years I've thought that cyclists would eventually just mount their phones to their handlebars and that we'd all be using smart phones in the future, but it hasn't happened yet. It seems like people prefer these dedicated cycling computers for the time being. (myself included). I'd love to hear what you use and your thoughts. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
@@mlegrand Everything you can see on the Garmin can be put in an app on a smartphone. Nobody is using dedicated navigation devices in cars anymore, on bicycles it's a mount and vibration thing I guess which obstruct this trend.
@@ronhoek69 - Maybe some manufacturer will nail the mount issue. I need to try that quad lock company. I keep seeing their ads. 😬
Why smartphones haven't replace bike computers, it's down to:
Battery life. I don't want to adventure somewhere and take a pitstop then see my phone at 20% where I cant relax with my phone now because the battery is almost dead. I also don't want to drain my lifeline's battery while on a ride. You can charge a phone in your car while driving if using as GPS but not on your bike.
Distractions: I don't want to see notifications except calls on my bike computer while riding. I want an easy to use UI. Way too much going on with a smartphone.
And of course snobbery. It feels cool having a dedicated unit.
a lot of disappointment ... this is basically a new case and new software. the solar thing is for that niche group that needs more than 35 charge between rides. I was hoping for a modern screen. the epix 2 screen is fantastic. they couldve done what they did with the Fenix and epix... a solar version w this screen and a oled version for the rest of us that only need about 20 hr charge time between charges.
That would have been very very interesting and I agree. I think that's why I'm feeling disappointed here. Really expensive device that's cool but no major changes. Nothing radically different going on here. Maybe on the 540/840? I better not get my hopes up. 🤦♂️ Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Contrary to a watch that you can easily change orientation if sunlight make it hard to read, the edge must work will in full sunlight or in the shade. I don't think smartphone screen technologies are good at that. The Edge screens have always been somewhat ugly but they work well for their application i.e. always on in full daylight with the sun hitting from all angles.
@@MrMartin246 I run, swim and bike with my epix… I speak from experience on what this oled screen can do. And Karoo seems to have no issues there… not an oled but same reflectivity(?) as an oled .
Thanks for the great reviews and video quality! I agree that in direct sunlight the Edge 1030 is easily readable/viewable. But navigating routes for me usually entails riding a mix of open roads and under trees. The 1030 was way better than the 1000, but not nearly as good as the Sigma Rox 12 that I owned (also touchscreen and regret selling it to buy the 1030) or even the small Wahoo Bolt (not a touchscreen of course). I was hoping so much for an update to the screen. But judging from the review the screen has still a lot of reflection. Garmin could improve this by using simpler maps with thicker lines for the routes as Sigma also did. I might not have 20/20 vision but still it seems a bit sub par to me that such an expensive product does not have a level of viewability (if that’s a word) to suit more riders in more mixed riding conditions (clouds, under trees with sunglasses). I do like Wahoo for nicer screens, but then I am missing out on the training metrics and good battery life of the Edge. Nowadays I use the Edge 130 plus for structured workouts and the Wahoo for routing, and keep hoping for the next generation of devices to better suit my needs.
Garment is The Best on the Market. You will not find any better.
It really is a good option. If you're doing a big big ride (multi-day) this is a great option. I just don't know if it's perfect for me. I don't typically do rides longer than 100 miles or so. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
With all the money Garmin gets from these expensive devices, they should invest more in the user interface and packaging design. Mostly UI looks outdated.
Yeah, I’d settle for a modest hardware update. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Too expensive. If it hits $400 maybe ill pick it up.
100% - at $400.00 this would be a great option. Thanks buddy.
Cyclists are easy to milk nowadays. Can demand any prices and there are enough out there that will pay it.
Should we start making super high priced cycling gear? I’m on it! 🙌
Better that that narcissistic DC Rainmaker review. Always blowing sunshine up his own arse. Thanks.
Well I love DC Rainmaker's reviews. But glad I can provide an alternative. 🤷♂️
sorry man this is utter nonsense. literally nobody wants more physical buttons on a device, let alone the flagship edge. and that's a key word: FLAGSHIP. you're proposing they lower the price of their best device? it's not reality. 1030 plus will be nicely discounted (just as the fenix 6 is today with the advent of the 7). you say the buttons and the usb are in a poor location but neglect to mention that it comes with other mounts. install on a stem and suddenly every button and port is easily accessible. sloppy stuff...
Great points Indy. Yes, I'm suggesting a redesign with out front mounts in mind. Garmin used to make an Edge 810 with top down buttons which I think are a good location. Wahoo does this also. The Fenix 7 has a touch screen but you can operate the device with the optional buttons. I think this is the way to go.
It costs too much😱!
How dare Garmin make a profit🤬
Does Garmin think that we live in a capitalist society¿🫣
Yeah, I agree. Garmin should take a loss on each sale to make their customers less cranky in UA-cam videos. 😂 I will say, although it's pricey, it's still the best cycling computer on the market at the moment. 🤷♂️ But I'll hold on to my cranky old man card a little longer.
The price has just made my mind up, in a world where the cost of living is going through the roof, Garmin announce this.... 🫣🫣
Yeah, ouch! I was so proud of them for not going crazy with the 955 pricing. But I'm sure their price of materials is also going crazy right now. Still, it's a nice device. 😬 Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
@@mlegrand I bought the 955 on Wednesday and was hoping to replace my 1030 with this, not at this price I won't be..
