Welcome to my Cycling Channel. I upload videos at least 3 times a week, everything about cycling, product reviews, workouts and other cool content.
Here is my 2021 Emonda SLR • Trek Emonda SLR Projec...
Here is my Channel / @jonmaloneycycling7593
Hi Jon, just checked back in to catch up on your channel and saw this.
I’m sorry to hear you’ve had such a rough time - it sounds like you’ve moved forward from those issues.
As others will concur I’m sure, I hope you’re ok.
You seem like a nice guy and wish you all the best.
This is the problem with the sport. People obsessing over weight. Obsessing over numbers from power meters.
People forget to just ride for the fun of it.
very true
@@jonmaloneycycling7593 Have you given up on youtube?
You still alive? Any video’s coming out soon?
I hope so.
An update would be cool
He’s on Strava, still killing rides.
"I have a very round face", very honest Jon, our self image is very different from the image others have of us
very true
Thanks for sharing this with us. It really is important to rely on how you feel and not as important as you look. I hope your message impacts those are experiencing the same struggles. I had to loose weight as well but was focussed on my ability to breath easier and not feel so tired. The side effects were loosing some weight and looking better. I think this is one of the best videos you put out in a real long time. Kudos.
thanks for sharing, appreciate it
Jon, just discovered your channel recently. Similarly at a point in my life where I don’t have to work as much and needing to fill a void. Decide to dedicate my spare time to cycling and taking it as far as I can. Wouldn’t have came to this decision without your videos. Thank you for candor, do and don’t, and everything else in between. Will look to your videos for continued inspiration and guidance.
thank you for your kind words and support
John are you still riding? I have not seen any new videos!
So honest man, appreciate it. Hope you are feeling better!!
Thank you for sharing this.............this video has taught me a lot.
Really enjoy all your Videos, motivates/learning alot!
thanks for your work and all the best to you
This is really important for people to hear especially men from another man. Thanks for sharing.
thanks for watching, all the best!
This is an important message and thanks for sharing. It’s not only young girls that are concerned about the way they look. When we sacrifice health for appearance we can get in a lot of trouble. You’re a good man for telling this story.
thank you, appreciate it
I never had problems with my weight but I really appreciate your honesty and vulnerability. Excellent content.
thank you
@Jon Maloney Cycling are you okay? Long time no see, Im worried, lest us know that you doing well
This is the kind of content that needs to be shared. You look great and your performance is phenomenal. Glad I stumbled upon this channel. You’ve got a new follower.
thank you!! all the best
Hey what happened to this channel? Why aren't you making videos anymore?
Jon, thanks for your candour on this potentially somewhat uncomfortable topic. Your shared insight has certainly helped me. Keep up the good work!
thank you
Great video John… sometimes we need know when to say stop unfortunately the majority of us don’t have the knowledge and information to know when that is and have to learn the hard way. Fortunately and I’m glad that you’re back to recovery and doing even better. Very informative and thanks for sharing…👍🏼
This is really important information to share. Many people get in to endurance sports to lose weight (I did) and when you've lost the weight you're still maintaining the weight loss lifestyle (I did that too). I want to say it took about three years of me maintaining a lean body (and struggling with fitness goals) until I let up on the diet. Lo and behold, when I started eating more (a little more, not a lot, and still making healthier choices) my fitness metrics (vo2 max, etc) started improving again.
I hope everything is ok with you and your family, God bless.
Many will recognize themselves. That working on yourself - also contains blind spots. Great - that you share your experiences with us.
thanks for tuning in
Congrats for the video!! It's a video that I think is very important advice for many sportsmen, whether they take their sport more seriously or more as a hobby!.... Good work. Thanks. 👌👍
Just finished 12 weeks of Fast 800 Keto diet and transitioning back to more calories and carbs now I'm training, hungrier and back riding with my club. The weight loss (30KG since Xmas), improved blood sugars and initial appetite reduction with keto was great, but as I've got fitter and into higher heart rate zones recovery became slower. Now figuring how much carbs and calories and meals to eat to maintain weigh loss, normal blood sugars and ability to ride at high intensity.
thanks for sharing, appreciate it
Thanks for the reminder to always eat clean and lean, hydrate but fuel up for the next session and during your ride.
yes!!
I never eat while riding. I have done 20 miles in 40 mins. On this day I did 100 miles in under three hours.
@@tonysweet9137 Nice
@@jonmaloneycycling7593 I do ride a DF Velomobile, so those numbers or times are not hard to do.
For long distance endurance, it is better to over fuel slightly than under. And as a T2 diabetic, the fuel system is less than optimal. Fuel floating in the body and not being able to use effectively. When I under fuel, cramps and fatigue onset a lot earlier in a century ride. When I over fuel, this was absent.
My doctor told me not to worry about the calorie intake during endurance rides, just fuel consistently and regularly. The sugar will burn off even 2 h after the ride as the body begins to repair the cells.
thank you for sharing, appreciate the info!
Very honest and well said Jon. As a bigger guy I eat and drink way more than others I ride with, it’s my body type and self image as always played a role. We’re simple machines and have to know what works for each of us.
exactly!! thanks for your comment
Another great video. Thank you for honestly sharing your struggles and more.
thank you, appreciate it
Great message! I've been there too. Found my ideal cycling weight and it's heavier than I thought I should be, but my power is up and I'm lean now too. Great video. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing your story. This is so important. I love the Canadian honesty!
thank you
Hi Jon, first of all, thanks for you opening up your problem to everybody and turning your problem as a advice to improve yourself but everybody with a kind of eating disorder that may impact fitness and mentally as well. Great you figured out and had the vision to overcome the problem methodically and along with your coach
Finally, your situation was pretty similar what is happening to me know where I had a great fitness a couple of years ago but suddenly I found myself in a situation where I lost so much weight from riding and running in such level that I'd burnt all my muscle mass and got very skinny. Everybody was telling me I was too skinny but I thought I was fit as it's supposed to be for biking (less weight = more watts/kg). I never had into consideration how much energy/calories I burned after each ride and recover that level of energy into my body eating accordingly to maintain mass and energy.
Currently, I had a serious problem of balance when riding that I've been dealing almost a year and an half, it isn't vertigo but when riding downhill or at high speed on flats I feel I'm being thrown out over the handlebar, my reflex is to unclip and slam the breaks.
When to the doctor and send me to a sport medicine area to see it was a vestibular problem, supposedly I was diagnosticated with a problem with my vision as a result of losing the capacity to move my eyes quickly to scan all around. All because of using too much cellular phone and 2 computer screens, thus, my field of vision is reduced dramatically because the things come to my eyes instead of the eyes look at the things around along with the movement of the neck + head up/down and sideways. Some exercises were indicated, I think they helped out but occasional
Hey Jon..... its the old wpkg. So hard not to want to improve it and cut back. I battle the same goal but not to the same extent you have. It is being able to spot that point where your power going up meets your weight going down.... need some sort of alarm on my phone to let me know when i have hit it!
yes!
Hope you're doing fine mate. Miss your content about cycling, workshop and everything that you've honestly said on your videos. Hope to see you soon again.
Hi John. Hoping all is going great. Thanks for your authentic vulnerability which helps us.
Jon, I miss your videos. Fingers crossed that you start posting them again!
What happened to the steady videos?
Thanks Jon, listening to you in the car on the way to work all the way over in Ireland.
thank you!!
That is my conclusion also. Im 43 yo, 185cm in hight and having around 84kg. As i strugle to cut down some weight, my performace drops instantly. I have found also that training in the gym, core stability, legs, dead lifts, back, arms, shoulders... all really have a big impact on my performans on bike. Unfortunatly i am now in recovery mode since i fell really nasty and having four fractures.
thanks for sharing. all the best!
I did this, not in a cycling context, but I rekt myself cutting when I was already underweight due to body image issues. I made myself weak, got covid, and was basically a broken human being for over a year. When you lose the fat you can't just keep cutting, you have to bulk, or at least eat to maintain. Fasting is great when you're fat. Skinny people need to eat on a schedule. Accepting planned bulking and cutting cycles changed my life.
You are missed around here. Hope all is well.
Good video and tips...carbs carbs carbs...they do matter! 😀 keep pedaling!👍🏾
thanks man!!
I can relate to everything you said in this video and literally just got back from a ride. Keep the videos coming and my goal is to move to Tucson one day, great cycling.
thank you
Tell your people everything! That's why they are there. Glad you didn't have to crash too hard to figure things out. As bad as it was, at least you're alive!
thank you
Jon, good to hear that you are back on the road again. Would appreciate hearing more about your diet and nutrition in general.
you got it!
I experienced this last summer. I was fasting 16hours everyday and only ate once! Yes 1 meal a day. I lost 30lbs in less than 2months from 190lbs to 160lbs.
I was riding my bike during this process and when I hit 160lbs I noticed i was weaker. I had lower energy reserves for climbs or sprints.
Fast forward now. I am back around 175lbs to 180lbs and I feel alot stronger. The weight I lost was my muscles. Now even though I am heavier I have the leg muscles to still climb hills or do sprints.
I dont look like a typical cyclist whose usually skinny but I can pull the numbers out when I need to. Appearance and health are 2 different things.
thank you for sharing. all the best!
Yeah man I see too many people fasting, cutting carbs, I just shake my head but there are so many people on UA-cam etc promoting this shit.
so true
Hey Jon. Hope all is well. Are you making any more videos? Hope so, they are very good. I too struggle with trying to get enough rest and recovery before a hard effort. I also tried low carbs (almost Keto) back in early February and it was a huge mistake. Imo, Cyclists need carbs. Good luck with your cycling!
You sure it’s just diet? You could probably still carb load one day and smash out 400 watts or so…. Might be wrong but could be overtraining. Nausea is a symptom. How much intensity are you doing?
I love your videos.. this was a promising channel.. what’s with the huge gap in uploads??
Are you done making new videos??
Most people would blame the power meter for a 30 watt loss!
Great numbers Jon, would love to learn more about your weight loss, diet and training journey. Or a recap If you’ve covered it before
thank you
Hey Jon, how are things? We miss you here. Hope all is great. You were a genuine great "youtuber" and this would show.
enoying your content man, keep it up!
Appreciate it!
Hi Jon. Just wondering where you have been. Haven't seen a new video in a while. Hope you are doing well.
I notice that you keep track of your rides, I was wondering do you use a performance management chart which will tell you when you are over training and to back off or when you can train harder. You are right, carbs are very important for fuel and protein for recovery.
Im Cyclist 5,7 133 lb I ride 4k to 5k miles per year there is times my weight is down to 120lb
Of course I get Medical attention from my (Sister) also she draw Blood every 4 months. I can understand your situation and Im glad that you figure it out before failure! Great work!!!
Great honest video Jon .......
thank you
What's up ? No videos?
When’s the next video coming out? Missing your content!
Hope you’ve been well.
hope youre coming back.
Where are you Jon? Missing you vids!
This hits home for me. Thanks for sharing.
thanks for tuning in!
dude everything ok? no new vids in a while
nice sharing! please keep making great videos!!!
Thank you, I will
Hi Jon, you are close to 10k subscribers! Took a bit longer then your original plans, but still 😉. Looking forward to new content and finally the 10k video. Keep it up! 😃
Very interesting Jon. Been there many years ago and you’re right it’s not nice. Now I’m 70 and I’m not to worried about a weight issue. Being 193cm and now weighing in at 98kg….I’m happy just to get on my bike , and with hills, climbs , I must be honest……I never liked ‘em.
thanks for sharing
Haha, was in Canada recently and stayed for a couple of days on the Lake of Bays near where that segment starts. My girlfriend made me drive up and down Highway 60 4 times until we (mercifully) saw a moose! Great effort!
Thanks for sharing!
How are you dude, no more video?
I'm so glad around the 7min 50 second mark you finally said you dont have the 10 pounds to lose. Looking at you on youtube from the chest up you for sure are not overweight. If anything you have what I would call the professional biker skinny going on. Out of control hungry. Yea i'll never have that problem as when I get too hungry it triggers migraines. The diet is going to be key. Instead of going for that easy junk food its replacing that food with fruits and vegetables instead. Loved the video keep up the great content.
thank you
Thank You great advice...I would say a lot of us have been there....I know I have....carbs are the bomb for endurance...took me a while to figure that out....
thanks for sharing
Thanks for sharing your experience. Having been heavy, do you find that there is fat that you are unable to lose? I've read that fat cells never go away, they'll shrink with weight loss, but the fat cells are still there. I lost 45 lbs over the past 2.5 years, but there is still "love handle" fat that just remains.
100% relate to this. Great video, Jon.
thank you
I'm currently fasting 18-6. I've lost 12 pounds in a little over a month. It's important to always listen to your body. If I'm hungry I eat. Only 12 more pounds to go
keep it up! all the best
Thanks for this! SO critical!
thank you
Hi Jon, I hope everything is ok, I'm waiting for new videos from you 🙂
Dude! Come back to UA-cam
All fine with you?
Thx for sharing. Subscribed👍🏻
Awesome, thank you!
Where are you mate….?
looking forward to see you back
There is a saying that goes something like “Carb the F up” -DurianRider 😂. Glad you are feeling better bud.
thanks
Jon, where have you been? I hope you’re doing well. We miss you 😭
useful and inspiring. thanks.
thank you
Thanks for sharing and your honesty
always!
Great Content, as always. Thanks.
thank you for watching
Miss your content. Hope all is well
Ive been working out like a monster, eat like a monster for weeks and now I'm barely riding and eating little. I think this is the way to go. But also, I've reached my Vo2 max which isnt even 60 so trying to figure out if I'm just fat sprinter. Even riding a couple hard 50 miles week in week out at 95+ degrees, I cant increase Vo2. Frustrating
thanks for sharing, all the best
Great advices!! it's so easy to lose ourselves in the pursuit of numbers.. I fell you buddy! have a healthy one :) P.S. how much do you weight now in kg?
Great content as always..
Much appreciated!
Thx Jon😀 This is like a flashback, after losing 45 pounds. 😀
thanks for tuning in
Dude. What happened to you ? Hooe you are well ...
Great info!!!
thank you
Yo, hope all is well! Ty for tbe videos
Body dysmorphia is real!
yes
This sounds like me. Thank you for the honesty
Hope the content returns
As someone who has a history of disordered eating, it’s nice to know I’m not the only one who struggles with this type of thing.
I came to cycling late as a means of getting back in shape, and wanting to lose weight in a healthy way this time. Despite my best intentions, it didn’t take long until I found myself trying to force my body to do unrealistic shit on an insufficient amount of food. It’s still difficult for me to feel like I’m doing things right, because there’s always that voice in the back of my head telling me I’m eating too much despite the fact I’m making better choices and eating to fuel based on what I have ahead of myself. Throw in the fact that half the people you interact with on a daily basis have the bar for health set seemingly abnormally low, and then diametrically opposed to this is the image of a professional being low single % body fat, and producing insane amounts of power for hours on end. It’s not always easy to know where I fit and what is actually best for me.
thanks for sharing. all the best to you!!
Hi Jon great video. I’ve struggled with trying to lose weight but don’t want to lose fitness mentality. Seems to me that you are saying don’t cut calories and fast if you are wanting to keep your fitness? In my experience I want to lose weight quickly so I can get to maintanence calories. But it’s like if I fuel for my rides properly it’s like my weight loss is slower
Why are you not downloading videos anymore?
....So I should ride fasted right? I'm basically where you're at or even more before it went bad so I have plenty of weight to lose, 27% body fat.
thanks for sharing. all the best!!
Haven't heard from you for a while , channel or ??????‽??
