New subscriber here from Texas USA. Just ordered 1040 non solar based on this video. Had 520 Plus but sold it 2 years ago due to cataract surgery. Got some Tifosi cycling readers and I’m back in business. Can’t wait to try out unit! Awesome channel Sir!
Agreed, sometimes it's just too much. I specifically leave battery saver mode on so I'm not tempted to glance at the screen for entertainments sake, 'I'm out here to look around and breath'. I like bold simple to read values at a glance and the rest can wait until I get home.
For me the power plan feature is an excellent addition!! (Assuming it is reasonable reliable) For TT and Triathlon rides I always used to use Best Bike Split but obviously that required a separate platform and a subscription.
Power guide is actually a very cool feature. It is not for racing against others... neither to race in a peloton. That is very useful for simulation indoor, TT, and sole rides...
The pacing seems like a great idea if you’re doing a new route solo. Far too many times I’ve either blown up as I went out too hard on unfamiliar routes, or rolled home with more left in the tank as I saved too much for the tail end of the ride, before finding out it was downhill.
It sounds perfect in theory for me, as I do a lot of riding solo, which is predominantly training. So intead of 'go and do this hilly route' I can plug in a 8/10 difficulty and really push myself where I might not had previously. Useless if you're riding in a group or a race obviously.
The pacing is great for every single race in which you aren't competing against others but against the clock. In a field of 300 competitors, I don't care if I end up 50th or 150th with multiple hours between the first and the last, I just want to beat my target time.
This new interface hurts my OCD: They have removed the lines on the main menu, but the sub menu still has lines.... Do like that last course added feature on the homescreen though.
Another great video @gplama. My micro USB snapped inside my 1030 unit and it seemed timely to upgrade to the 1040 (non solar). I just couldn’t justify the extra $300 AUD. There’s only 1 guys I know who would benefit from the additional battery life (one drslane with his crazy 500km rides😂). I’ve definitely noticed the greater speed and feel of the touch screen. As a side note, any members of Engineers Australia can get 20% off Garmin. It came in handy for me 😁
I've been a Wahoo user for the last four years but I'm seriously considering going with the Garmin 1040 Solar. I was waiting on Wahoo to upgrade the Elemnt Roam but Wahoo seems to be staying with the dated unit. Excellent review.
I'm in the exact same position : thinking about upgrading from my Wahoo Elemnt Bolt v2 to this unit ! Still not sure if I'll like it better (I love the flexibility of the Bolt : putting what you want to see where you want to see !)
@@jonathandagenais9803 I'm going to give Wahoo a bit longer. The Wahoo Elemnt has been rock solid in it's performance but I have concerns the rechargeable battery is beginning to weaken. I'm familiar with Wahoo and Garmin ride metrics since I wear a Garmin Fenix 6 Sapphire watch. If you do upgrade to the Garmin 1040 (Solar or regular) please make a post of what you think of it. Thank you.
Just grabbed a 1040 non-solar. Upgraded from a 520 and I love it. With such a long battery life, I didn’t think the added 20 minutes of solar charge would make a big practical difference. Rarely, if ever, will I have to go 35 hours of riding between charges. So those extra minutes felt a bit superfluous.
Thank you for a very clear opinion "is it worth to upgrade?" 👍 I'm on 1030 and sometimes a bit annoyed by how slow the unit is, especially when riding with Varia radar. Most likely I'm going to spoil myself and buy one... I'm only hoping that global supply shortage will not affect availability ... Thanks!
Almost all the “new & exciting” features seem like they can be pushed over software updates to older devices. Now that pricing ! 😮🥵🥵 Great video as always GP Lama
Thanks for the comprehensive review and comparison with the 1030+. The battery performance of my 520+ is seriously degraded now after 5 years and barely lasts a 60 mile ride with a Varia connected. I'm looking at the 1030+ and the newest 1040 for a replacement with much longer battery life so I can have everything connected and all features turned on without worrying if the GPS will run out of battery on century rides.
Thanks Shane. I really wanted the solar but no stock. Your video is making me feel a bit better about that. Realistically in the UK I can only see it adding a few minutes, and I store mine in a dark dark garage.
Great video as always Shane, thanks 👍😊 About what I expected from Garmin these days... a 'steady as she goes' update, rather than any big upgrades. Mostly seems to be 'nice to haves' so no rush to upgrade from my 530 than I've been super happy with (although would very much appreciate better climb granularity!) Any plans on doing videos about your home solar install / operation?
The climb granularity is actually a misnomer. They provided a better looking graphic. But the Edge 1040 averages the % Grade over a very long period. It's not accurate for where you are on the hill or how much elevation you've actually covered because of that. Elevation is typically off by around 10% on every ride I've done with not one, but two Edge 1040 Solar units.
So....is this the unit to push me away from Wahoo? Thanks for the overview and initial review. Looking forward to seeing how the solar stands up over time.
Looks nice and everything but in most of handlebars (specially integrated stem-handlebar combo) you have little space to accomodate that huge device. Probably if someone is a heavy user of navigation features the big screen is great but if just _like me_ uses the unit for recording data and post workout analysis is an unnecessary device. Even is you look into the world tour peloton, a lot of cyclist uses the 830 series because it's easier to put your fingers and mark the laps and stop in the end of stages ( and probably weight saving). The video good as always, thanks!
I have the 1030+ since it came out and it seems that the 1040 is not worth upgrading. I think that the 1040 is more evolution then revolution and that is a bit of a bummer imho. The unit looks the same as the 1030+ and is quite thick and the bezels are still huge. It would have been great if the starting point of a new edge device would be a small smart phone and try to take it from there and make it usable for a bike computer. I like the back of the device with the metal mount. I also like the usb type C port. For the money I don't know. Maybe I will buy it one day but not any time soon, I think.
Hi Shane. Got the 1040 after watching your review (as upgrade to 830, and have previously owned 1000 and 800). They have at least a decade of my heart rate, power etc etc. The new features are so wildly inaccurate and useless that it deserves a mention. Stamina is a complete joke. I did a 120km ride that I have done so many times before and in the 20th km stamina went down to
This is the device you buy if you've di2 over the Karoo2 lol - I've always thought garmin have the cycling computer covered over Hammerhead in all honesty.. thorough etc.. Bit expensive this I've always thought too. The solar ideaolgy is a good idea too!
Good to know that there's nothing that special to upgrade from the 1030+ that I've got. The extra battery life would be nice but I've done 16h all day-rides and still had a little left. I'll hold out until we get a 1050 that has LTE.
for those who simply need extra battery life, there's also the option of the external battery pack, which is quite a bit cheaper than a full upgrade to 1040 solar...
Been waiting for something like this. Great to see the review. My cracked 530 screen is held together with a screen protector. I guessed upgrades couldn't be too far away so thought I'd wait till Aussie spring. Moving to a bigger screen is certainly an option for my aging eyes although price might drive me to 540 or 840 if they come out by then
As always great video & update Shane. Are you aware of Any major update Garmin are planning for the 830, similar to 1040, USBC etc. Personally, I’m not a major fan of the size/length of the 1040. I prefer a smaller unit. Keep up the great work👏👏👏
I hope they bring the new interface to the 1030 / 830 and 530 as well - especially the opportunity to set your data fields in the connect app, there should be no technical argument that this isn't possible. Ah wait Garmin will release a 840 and 540 with just some new interface and minor tweaks in battery life 🤦🏼♂️

Thanks Lama, really hoping now there is a new 500/800 in the pipeline reckon I can hold out a couple of months before committing.
Maybe next generation product have wireless charger. New Garmin looks nice and tempting but price tag take care that I stick with my 1030 Plus for awhile.
I want to know if i can use the power guide to define the strategy to conquer the strava segment using my ftp data!!! or impruve my time in the course... Great Video!!! I hope this option come to my 830..
lot's of features and fantastic battery life....but that price and interface just looks too busy for my taste. Guessing this is what some riders are demanding and Garmin has at least given it to them.
This is a good time to get a 1030+ if the new features of the 1040 are not a life or death necessity. Knowing the 1040 was coming out, I kept a lookout for discounts on the Garmin 1030+ and found units for $449.99 USD on Amazon and the Garmin site itself. Not sure these discounts are still available, but I thought it was worth mentioning to your viewers for whom a $600 USD purchase (or more!) is too much to swallow.
I would love to see if Climb pro has improved when it comes to accuracy, this weekend I did Rhön Radmarathon in Germany, 256 km with ~4800 meters of climbing, in the beginning ClimbPro worked OK, but as I got longer into the race, it stated slipping, at the last climb I was more than 700 meters into the climb when my Edge 830 had it to start, as I also own a Karoo 2, I was just thinking, come on Garmin, how hard can it be. ClimbPro is more or less useless here in Denmark, where I live, as most hills are shorter than 700 meters. Would love to see you do a long ride test of ClimbPro with the 1040.
@@gplama Will do, I live in the most hilly area in Denmark, but nothing to brag about. But first options will most likely be during summer in France and Italy. ;)
@@gplama did a longer ride using a route created in Strava yesterday, with a few small hills (we are in Denmark 🇩🇰, mostly flat) the first couple of hills were spot on, still about 1/2 way it was still spot on. But after ~100 km, we went of the route to get water at a church, after that we had the biggest climb of the day 2,6 km with average gradient of 4%, yes that’s a hill 😂 it’s up to Denmark’s highest point 170 meters 😂 and that was roughly 300 meters off. After that we had at few small climbs, but they were only ~100 meters off. It’s better, but still a mystery to me.
@GPLama has Garmin yet made or have feature to flip the Garmin in the landscape mode on your bars instead of just the portrait mode? Thanks for the review
I have a 1030 plus…is nice to have the last Garmin but like you says on the final…there’s tons of info that overwhelm me and I don’t know what they mean 😅
Is it finally possible to send new routes while an anctivity is recorded? Biggest minus in the current Garmin LineUp. Can we run CommectIQ Apps while an activity is recorded (paused), for example Komoot to load a new route?
Great video. Thanks. Are the tone loudness about the same between the 1030 Plus and 1040? I upgraded to the 1030 Plus from the 830 for the louder tone but my friend's Bolt is still louder, which I much prefer.
The solar version is 12g heavier. I wonder how battery life would compare to a unit with a 12g bigger battery. The solar only seems to add a tiny trickle, which is no great surprise given the small surface area.
Looking at power guide, I wonder if they're planning to make this dynamic, based on stamina / reserve. In theory level 9 or 10 could mean empty at the end of the ride and the level determines how much you are willing to invest into the ride.
I am pretty keen to find out how long it takes to charge from 0-100% on a wall charger? hopefully it is better than the old 4-5 hours for a full charge.
Great comparison. I was hoping to see if they had increased the maximum segments stored in memory? One of the fixes I was hoping to see improved on my 1030 is the 100 stored segment limit. I easily have 100+ favorite segments in my local SF Bay Area metro area with a need for more for my favorite travel destinations. Does anyone else have a need for 100s of segments stored in their edge? Does anyone know if 1040 has increased this? The Garmin site isn't clear on segment storage, but it does spec a 100 max on saved routes, so I'm worried the segment max is the same.
Looking at the redesigned UI, it seems to be more designed for use with a touch screen. I wonder if this could mean the 540 will get a touch screen, whether the 540 en 840 will merge. Two more options, the 540 gets a different buttoon layout to the 530 or the 540 will get a different menu (wouldn't go that route garmin).
In the era of smartphones Garmin is still living with 2000s technology. Looks dated, slow and needs a cable to upload routes??? Unbelievable. Passing on this one and keeping using my smart phone.
If you're using a smart phone you aren't anywhere close to being at the level where one of these would be necessary, so yes, it's best you stay in your lane lol.

A great snap-shot on the new 1040. Do you have any indication on its market release in Australia? and perhaps a crystal ball gazer question do you think this unit will have the capacity to be scaled up for predictive climbs? For me the predictive climb is a wanna have feature.
Should be available in AU now. I suspect it has the capacity to do free ride climb predictions. We’ll have to wait to see if that’s something they release.
They could sell the 10*0 as an app for the smartphone. ^^ I don't need a 2nd smartphone. The 530 is ok for me, but it could update gps faster after changing directions.
I thought they may have added phone menu config like on the more recent watches, menu diving isn’t too bad on the touchscreen I suppose, maybe if they refresh the 530 to a 540

That's a brilliant way of putting it. I like your take on this Tom. 👊🏼
Keep me posted if this keeps occurring. I had something similar for one climb recently that I needed to go back and look into.
Idea for a video, compare the edge 1040 power guide to best bike split power plan.
So when is the 840 and 540 comming :)
and more importantly, when do the 830 and 530 go on sale? :)
@GPLama has Garmin yet made or have feature to flip the Garmin in the landscape
mode on your bars instead of just the portrait mode? Thanks for the review
Nope
Is the screen any better in the rain?
So 2 weeks ago, when I asked you about new Garmins possibly coming soon, were you just pretending not to know? ;)
thanks
I have a 1030 plus…is nice to have the last Garmin but like you says on the final…there’s tons of info that overwhelm me and I don’t know what they mean 😅
Already 25% off at the Garmin store through various life/health insurance benefits. 👍
How about cycling power test utilizing the Rally pedals and HRM chest strap data?
The solar version is 12g heavier. I wonder how battery life would compare to a unit with a 12g bigger battery. The solar only seems to add a tiny trickle, which is no great surprise given the small surface area.
my trusty Edge 520 holds 6hr (with power meter) so I have to charge it almost every day.
Let's spend some money then XD
Just wondering how many riders actually use all these functions.
How helpful would power guide be for ultra distane racing.
The distance of the route could be an issue. Most of these devices done handle more than a few 100km very well for routes.
Never had the unit under 50% yet (the thing keeps going on and on...). I'll make note to drain it and check this.
@@gplama Thanks.
I keep hoping they will include cadence and HR on the power workout screen, something my 830 doesn't do.
I thought the same... it'd be tricky to implement on a smaller non-touch screen. No sign of the smaller units, so nothing to worry about for now. :)
Recommendations for zwift set ups please
In the era of smartphones Garmin is still living with 2000s technology. Looks dated, slow and needs a cable to upload routes??? Unbelievable. Passing on this one and keeping using my smart phone.
If you're using a smart phone you aren't anywhere close to being at the level where one of these would be necessary, so yes, it's best you stay in your lane lol.
@@freeffree4133 I've tested all your fancy Garmins, Karoos, etc. and they cant't even compare to smartphone technology. I have Karoo 2 for now just for a sake of it. But if you are a data analyzing junkie just keep using that ancient Garmin. LOL. To each their own. Cheers.
@@ridelive6249 The battery life on a smartphone phone limits it's usefulness for real cyclists. That's why we don't use them for tracking metrics. Once you actually begin to cycle more than an hour you will understand....😂
@@freeffree4133 Oh boy. Stop making me laugh. My smartphone keeps me going for 4 hours with HR and Varia connected. If I need to do a century, I have a 5k small powerbank in my top tube bag. Stop picturing yourself as a "bad ass" hard core cyclist and just use whatever gadget suits your needs. Thanks to you and alike Garmin will never innovate. Karoo 3 will kill it hopefully. Cheers.
@@ridelive6249 4 hours is a light work day boss 🤣
Can you sync settings from other Garmin devices? I have Edge 520 that has a low lasting battery and needs replacing. Thinking of upgrading to regular 1040.
Karoo 3 or this for average Joe?
A great snap-shot on the new 1040. Do you have any indication on its market release in Australia? and perhaps a crystal ball gazer question do you think this unit will have the capacity to be scaled up for predictive climbs? For me the predictive climb is a wanna have feature.
Should be available in AU now. I suspect it has the capacity to do free ride climb predictions. We’ll have to wait to see if that’s something they release.
They could sell the 10*0 as an app for the smartphone. ^^
I don't need a 2nd smartphone. The 530 is ok for me, but it could update gps faster after changing directions.
Most of the features beyond the 500's, nobody much uses.
Still lookin for a smartphone app that makes these into history.
That pricing tho 😮! For cheap plastic, dated components and screen quality from 10 years ago! No way!
I thought they may have added phone menu config like on the more recent watches, menu diving isn’t too bad on the touchscreen I suppose, maybe if they refresh the 530 to a 540
