Nah! This is my complaint. I am aware that Garmin wants to make money and attach hardware to software. I am willing to pay! 10-15 usd to unlock these features on my older gen devices. If any of Wild ones read this, please help. 😢 Because else the device is working totally fine. I'm not going to upgrade my Garmin 1030 plus until it just won't work anymore or I crash. I think it would be a good faith move for Garmin and maybe they come out on the other end with a little profit or at least 0. I could imagine a lot of people with 530/830s wanting these non-hardware specific features
I'm having trouble getting the music controls to work on an Edge 530. The music controls option is not showing while adding a data screen. Anyone else having this issue?
Something else that's fun, if you have a varia device, is a third party data field (from the connect store), to see the exact speed a vehicle behind is driving. That not only alerts you to that vehicle coming, but also gives you an impression of the type of driver, even before you look over your shoulder. For instance if you see they are breaking the speed limit, you can mentally prepare for a driver that isn't too keen to follow rules and conventions. This should also work stationary, so you basically have a laser gun too, using your Garmin varia handheld, for if you for instance want to collect data to support a case for you local government.
They have stopped doing updates to the x30 devices. I watched a GPLlama Garmin update video and he stated Garmin told him that only critical updates will be pushed. Given the x40 series were released over two years ago, that's good.

You, garming or both are way off from the supported devices. Edge 530 can't do this things, and I suspect any Garmin without touch screen lacks the control music panel among other stuff
All right, I'm surprised. As someone who's meticulously read the whole manual and hangs out on the forums...you got me with one! I had no idea about the generate-a-route feature, and that's super useful to me. By the way, you can add music controls as "widget" from the top drop-down instead of as a page on a particular activity profile.
(I'm not a diabetic but . . .) I noticed in a Team NovoNordisk post that diabetics can pair their continuous blood glucose monitor to their bike computer (if compatible).
Garmin - if you’re listening - what’s the reason x30 series aren’t being updated? My 1030 Plus was a big investment so obviously didn’t expect it to be outdated so soon. If that’s the decision, can you create a trade-in program? Thanks.
The reason is they are purposefully locking new features to newer (read: more expensive) so you will spend money to get them. The shareholders constantly demand higher revenue. That's capitalism for ya
I’ve just won a Garmin edge explore in a raffle from a sportive that I did. I currently have the Wahoo roam so it’s taking me a while to get used to the Garmin but I’m liking it so far, just not as confident with the battery life vs the roam
Great video, and I don't even own a garmin. It's on my list of nice to haves, but I'm not taking the plunge to get one just yet. Hopefully by the time I really want one, the Chinese brands have caught up a bit. I'd mainly want the more basic features anyway.
Thanks Jimmy, Francis and Emily! Greetings from Whitby, Ontario, Canada. Awesome Garmin how-to video that explained so many things! My first Garmin (540) arrived on Sunday, I am one ride in with it and so far and there was more info on the unit than I was expecting or thought possible. I am currently looking for info and uTube videos about how to sink my Freestyle 2 CGM to my Garmin without running 5 connected active apps. Do you or any of your friends have experience linking or using a glucose monitor with your Garmin? There may be more support for this in the UK than in Canada? I noticed Dexcom has a single Widget and that I may have to switch sensors. Either way, this might make a good video topic for the diabetic cyclists who follow your channel. I am diabetic and insulin dependant so I am not intending to use this for racing. Your Olympic coverage was wonderful too!
I have the Edge 520 .., which of these are compatible with it? Also I bought it from a friend and it has saved rides on it, so should I factory reset it or what. Thanks in advance... New to the head unit's
I was actually quite surprised how well incident detection works. My back tyre slipped on a sharp 90°+ turn. I had literally no speed, so I fell clipped to my bike and landed on my left hand. It wasn't a hard fall at all, but after I stayed layed down for a few seconds to try to unclip and get up, a loud alarm started and was ready to phone the emergency person if I didn't stop it in (I think) 30 secs.
the music controller screen does not exist for the Edge 530. I double checked all over internet and Garmin confirmed on their own forum that it won't be supported 😒
Great video, Boys! 👏👏👏 However, shame on Garmin for their policy of not bringing updates to the xx30 Series that those computers clearly can handle. Example, the chip in my Garmin 1030+ could easily handle Garmin's new "Free Ride Climb Pro" functionality. But you're never going to see that feature if you have any xx30 unit simply because Garmin wants to force you to spend hundreds and hundreds of $€£¥¢₩ on a xx40 unit. Wasting people's money and wasting natural resources is not cool Garmin.
Does Someone know how to Connect a forerunner Watch (as a hartbeat sensor) to a edge explorer 2, i figured it out once but now it doesn’t seem to work anymore…
A few takeaways from this video; 1) some of the OG jerseys 👌🏼 2) who is Bartholemew 😂 3) quite concerned for Jimmi as that looked like quite a nasty fall😮
I love my Garmin. (Edge, pedals, scales, Fenix…) Ive several events set up and am using the daily suggested workouts to train for them. It’s highly likely that Garmin knows more about me than I do! But it’s working, I am getting stronger and faster. Plus, I do love a metric

Music control doesn't seem to work on my 1030+ ... As seems to be the case for many here commenting😢 So why not put a good word in for us with your sponsor to make it available in the next firmware update?!❤
It would be great if my Edge 130 Plus would stop crashing in the middle of my rides. Just decides to reboot then says "ride in session" and I have to hit start to begin tracking data again. If I catch it in time it's not too bad but if I'm not paying attention I miss miles of tracking. Device is up to date and have owned it for one season. All the bells and whistles are great but first and foremost make your devices stable!
I like that my Edge 540 can control my music, but so can my earbuds. I can pause, play, skip, and adjust volume all with a tap on the bud. But these are all great tips for those of us who haven't dived into the everything these Garmin devices can do.
Thanks for the tips. Do you know if there's a possibilty to let Strava live segments overlay the Garmin screen while following a course? This doesn't seem to work on my Garmin Edge 830. So while following a course I don't see strava live segments even though I have Strava premium and the course is marked with a 'star' on Strava.
Yeah, it's a thing with garmin... while following a course you will get 0 live segments pop up. You have to not be following a route and the segments should pop up if you have the settings to do so turned on. Also a tip, in strava you can select few segments and "star" them to make sure they will pop up on the garmin (another thing is, you will only get live segments that are "uphill" meaning gradient of over 0.1% if it's downhill, it doesn't show it. I was disappointed about that too. Hopefully this helped to clarify things💪
They need lte on the next device, I'm not lugging my iPhone pro max around with me, gone as far as getting a cheap android phone but also not practical. Often want to send my wife or family / friends a message if I'm running late. Till then sticking with 830.
