What you're looking at is a faithful re-imagining of a rare Vox/Trixon kit from the mid- to late-'60s. The Telstar's iconic "flat tire" chambered bass drum was originally designed to support two pedals at once, allowing players to achieve distinct bass drum tones just by adjusting their playing position. But as time went on and the Telstar fell out of fashion, this kit has gone down as a real rarity among vintage enthusiasts. Fortunately, the good folks at Vox and Sakae have resurrected these curious kits for today's drummers to play and behold.

We had a little fun with the Vox Telstar, let us know what you think of this abstract kit! Keep the fun going by smashing those like and subscribe buttons!
It’s very groovy and slightly Gaudi inspired
Funny
I love the sound..especially the bass drum
I was expecting Rdavidr to pop up singing or skating across the stage on a surfboard with wheels.
That intro caught me of guard lol
Truly!!
Summer of '99 I saw Spock's Beard live and Nick hopped out from behind the kit and switched places with Neal Morse and Nick fronted the band in a rendition of Squonk. It was pretty rad. Neal is a a more than competent drummer too.
Same lol
It didn't catch me out..this is the kind of things that happens when drummers are in charge lol
When going through the drum sizes all I heard was “good luck buying heads.”
The only odd sizes were the toms and snare depths. All of the radius sizes were typical 13, 16, and 14. As for the stupid bass drum, look no further than Remo for a special designed oblong head that sounds like shit at any tension/tuning.
Same
I may be alone on this but I love the sound of this kit! It got a really vintage sound
It’s videos like this that make me want to work at Sweetwater
same
It’s melting!
Finally Nick has reviewed this kit, which sounds pretty good. I knew it looked kinda wierd but the bass drum looks and sounds like it didn't consent to being created. 😂😂😂😂😂
Wow this is really something...amazing look, sound and wrap. I would never buy a kit like this but it is really amazing.
This kit is perfect
This kit sounds sweet!
That intro song was great Nick!
To all the skeptics, RHCP - Dark Necessities was recorded with this kind of bass drum.
I was mod before you was mod. So I have been telling myself but after that intro I'm not so sure anymore. Love the kit and the demo, Nick is a true gem. Give him a raise.
Let's all agree that Nick is not just another salesman.
This drum set confuses me so much. But I love the intro you did, Nick!! Just like the Pearl snare drum videos, awesome to see you putting a fun arrangement together with a band!!
more videos like this please, recorded the way they are usualy heard
Thanks Nick! Love your demos.
Admittedly, I enjoyed Nick's demo of the kit than the actual kit itself! I use to have a Trixon when I first started playing a kit. The floor tom was actually conical. 16" batter with a 14" reso if I remember correctly. I guess at some point I just got tired of people mockingly asking me "Who sat on your bass drum?". But I do have fond memories of practicing to Herb Alpert and The Tijuana Brass records on it.
Awesome intro! Almost reminds me of intros of some Saturday Morning cartoons.
First off, that intro song is why I love Nick and Sweetwater so much. Second, it’s worth mentioning that alder has been used in drums since 2010 thanks to Ddrum and both of their Reflex (100% alder) and MAX (maple and alder) drum kits. With that said, this is a truly unique kit that sounds cool, especially the toms.
I think the kit sounds really cool. It definitely sounds vintage. I also love the weird finish. The toms sound great, super big and warm. The kick though.... I just don't understand the point. If they made the same exact kit with a normal round kick drum, I'd totally be interested in it. But the gimmicky melting kick drum that is impossible to buy heads for is just a terrible idea.
It's not impossible to buy heads - Remo make them.
Flat tire kick. As it was back in the day.
@@malthuswasright I should say, impossible to buy more than one head.
I think the kick was the whole point of this kit. lol.
Nicks tests are always a highlight in UA-cam!!! This Kit sounds phenomenal , not only here at Sweetwater, also rdavidr test. very deep warm tone with a very controllable sustain, blends good in the music.......
Love it..just Very Expensive little kit..
Alright Sweetwater! Y’all are having too much fun now, it’s time for an emergency in person NAAM! Lol
alien drumset from the year 4000 that actually sounds great!
My man Nick can sing🤣🤣🤣🤣
I love it sort of a chrome doo woo thing
I like it because it's different, and different is what makes your music last.
Love unconventional
all been said and presented intro song is the best
Cool sounds
Definitely a kit for the drummer or producer who has a collection. Not meant to be the daily driver, or to cover a variety of genres. But, it does have a sound of its own, and it makes a cool conversation piece. And for shooting a music video, the Salvador Dali vibe could be kind of useful!
Just gorgeous! I need This snare!
Ok, Nick!!! This is Lisa (All Stars)...love the intro.
Hey Nick, did someone let the air out of your bass drum?
Sweetwater is always willing to work a deal if you wanna save a few bucks on equipment. They are my go to for good prices.
man i love the sound of those toms, not really the kick or the snare tho, but man them toms
What if you wanted a specific type of kick drum head to give you a certain sound?
you cant lol unless you contact VOX for a custom head
Man that’s an amazing drum kit. Sweetwater rocks
VOX Trixon ( made in Germany ) were excellent drums in the 60s
l had a regular set( 20, 13, 16 + a
metal 8 lug 14) in red sparkle
Just like Clyde's & Jabo's.
is this a kit you play or a kit you hold on to for collection purposes?
Looks like it melted in the summer heat.
It looks and sounds amazing! Reminds me of the drum sample outtakes on endtroducing by DJ shadow.
We love the intro song. Very cool drums too.
Can you do a review of the new hardware dw 3000 year 2020?
Great intro!
This kit gives me some Mel Taylor ventures sounds.
What do you do for a bag or case for the bass drum?
Is there a department at Sweetwater that makes sure Nick gets paid properly? That man is golden, he could sell you a tree and made you believe it's a great natural feeling drumstick
How do you tune the bass drum? Do the lugs sound different at the smaller end?
Good question
Sounds better than many kits today
Best intro ever!
had to go back and re watch the intro
You know that you are in the right work when you can have that much fun in just the intros
Legendary thumbnail awesome video
And they are expecting to sell this??
AWESOME SNARE!!!!
Man those Toms sounds great! Would love to see the mic setup, sounds killer!
I think you can see the entire mic setup in the wide shots. Looks like just two mics... the AEA N8 on the kick angled down, and the Audio Technica AT5045 behind the floor tom angled across the kit (picking up the snare and hi-hat). Its a motown-inspired mic setup for drums. They used to mic up kits with just a couple mics like that. Probably a room mic or two in there as well, but I don't see them.
Must be a real pain to replace the bass drum heads; but the bass drum sounds pretty cool to me.
Idk I think for $1800 you could get a better sounding kit.
Raul Duke absolutely! Drum building has come so far, especially in the last 10 years! The DW Design Series kills this set! And for $1600 you get a nice 5 pc. kit. Or a Mapex Armory, GRETSCH Catalina, etc. the list goes on and on!
considering they did NOT mic up the entire kit like normally, this isn't really a good representation.
Odd looking kick, definitely different
When he first played the kick i thought he took the matching one from the st anger snare.
Soooo I'm thinking that if you tour with this kit, you'd better have a lot of spare heads... cause they're gonna be hard to find on the road.
What you been smokin Nick ? 😂
I lol'd hard dude.. That face at the end of the intro 😜
Intro Sounded like a advertisement
Mom! Can you sew me a gigbag for my bass drum?.....😳 Fu$k off! Do it yourself!
does it work with a double pedal?
Hey, JJ. Thanks so much for reaching out. Yes, this will work with a double pedal. However, due to the shape of the bass drum, you will be getting two different sounds, which is kind of cool.
I hope this helps.

La batería favorita de Santi Abascal.
I wanted him to play Hawaii 50 theme Lol
P.S. How about telling us what mics you used on the kit,and the rest of the chain?
While it’s not the weirdest looking drum set I’ve seen, this triangle drum set I saw is the weirdest looking drum set, it does looks odd
I saw that one... really strange
Nick would sell a crocodile to an Eskimo , just joking ,good presentation and playing . My question is : If this set gets discontinued and/or Remo stops making these weird sized "skins" ,What Than ?
Kick has a Zeppelin boom to it. I’m surprised.
👀
Hi David!
These drums sound much better on your episodes!
Yooooooooo
How many rythem beats in this drum and can u tell the Asian beats Num
Not gonna lie, that snare sounds amazing
Wow - that should sell like cakes that have been buried in permafrost for the last 700 years 😂
Nightmare drum kit
What wood is this even made of?
Rusty Garlic Bread snare and toms are made of alder, kick is made of birch
He clearly answered that question in the video.
The intro was cheesy, but entertaining. As usual, Nick’s playing can make any drums sound great. I love the retro look and resonant sound of that drum kit. Very cool 😎
I can get a kit that sounds like that from a teenager at a local garage sale.
he kinda looks like charlie harper in that shirt....XD
Liked for the awesomely cheesy intro. Well done 👏
Nick D'virgilio (Tears for Fears) ... 😉👍🏼
Interesting spin on paying homage to the vintage trixon kits but not worth $1800
$1800 for birch and alderwood in odd sizes that no one makes heads for. So what was that about me buying any number of very nice maple kits for that money? If you wanted all birch, get a Yamaha stage custom for $680 and use the remaining $1100 for hardware and cymbals.
Almost 2 grand plus you have to pay more for the custom bass drum heads?...No thx!
aww you mad?
Hope you never find out about A&F Drums
Who hurt you?
I don’t care for the kit, but the intro was cute!
Yeah, I wonder if there are many songs about music gear like this.
Because musicians are nothing without their gear.
That made me really uncomfortable
I skipped to the intro lol I was confused
There's definitely a reason drums are round.
sadkickdrum is droopy :(
That kick drum is NOT "oblong". Does the reviewer even know what oblong means?
I can definitely see collectors enjoying this kit but damn it sounds rough lol
Is there anything Nick CANT do?
I think the only thing Nick can't do is to look bored behind a drum kit.
the intro made Nick the hippest player on youtube
drumpet
Good demo, but who would buy this? You have to order custom kick heads, and IMO built in dampening hardware is a crutch.
I want it for free
