In 2015, my friend Bonnie found her near mint purple-mirrored 4-piece (w/ matching snare + hardware + 60s Zildjians) at a garage sale in Moncton New Brunswick for 150$. I remember playing them and thinking how do these funny-looking drums sound so bloody good?
You are absolutely correct! The Trixon's had a wooden divider that was adjustable to divide the shell into a big half and smaller half that you would use two bass drum pedals on, giving you the sound of two different size drums. It was a sound theory, but didn't pan out so well in practice. My best friend had an original red sparkle Trixon Speedfire, and it was very cool to look at, but the shell composition and hardware were VERY basic. It felt like someone squashed a beginner kit into a weird shape. The main complaints I'm reading about the Vox re--ssue kit basically say the hardware is garbage, to include the lug casings and rims. That's sad too, because at that price you can buy a KILLER Tama Starclassic. Anyhoo, thanks for coming to my TED Talk.
@@tomtomkapowyes, I've heard the vintage kits on UA-cam and I've seen them in person and even though they look sixties cool they are of poor quality. Too bad about the lugs and hardware with these reissues because I thought the sound of the new shells in this and another demo were good. Not super high end great but good.
@David Houston Drums Good point but I'm more concerned with the fact that I won't be able to find a head for it or rather that it's gonna be pricey cuz it's a Remo exclusive.
Beautiful sounding drums! Bass has rich, deep resonate tone, as well as the toms. None of them sound like a cardboard box trying to sound like a drum. I wouldn't change a thing.
Why is this drumkit shipped with only one single pedal? The basic idea of the Trixon Drum company was to have two bassdrum sounds with only one bassdrum. A lower sound one the right side and a higher sound on the left. The original Trixon Speedfire was shipped with two pedals.
Few questions: 1. Does the hardware only contribute to the kit as an aesthetic, or is it legitimately effective? 2. Does the muffling affect the tone of the kick differently to normal kick drums? 3. Would you ever consider cutting a porthole in the kick reso head?
People complaining about price, impracticality of transportation, etc... it’s a novelty kit made mostly with the collector in mind. It’s a cool vintage throwback to some of the quirky drums from the past, and is a great conversation starter and would be a cool part of any collection.
Those toms sound fantastic. I dig the mufflers on the kick too, I'm curious to see what it will sound like with traditional muffling in the bass instead of the mutes though. Do you happen to know if there is a custom bass drum gig case available? also have Remo said anything about producing the heads for the kit on custom order indefinitely, or is there a bit of a life span here?
This was probably mentioned in other comments but the reason for the weird bass drum is so you can get different tones from one bass drum without retuning the heads. Simply move the pedal to a different position.
Very kool, for everyone asking, the original had a piece of wood inside of the bass drum separating the two uneven sides of the bass drum. You would attach two pedals, one on each side so you basically had two different bass drums. The snare had a mount that attached to the actual bass drum so that there wouldn’t be a snare stand in your way of the two pedals! Lucky man for getting your hands on this kit! The hardware makes me sad though. Especially since there’s not even a memory lock on the cheap looking tom are. Which looks like it’s got gears so you can’t get it exactly where you want it. Still though I’ve always wanted one of these!
The old Trixon bass drums looked near identical to this and as I understand were designed to take two pedals with different areas of the drum giving different tones (I guess as a result of different tensions in different areas of the head?). Wonder if this is the same...
Yeah I was gonna say the same thing about the old Trixton kits! Pretty sure it was so you could get different kick tones when using different pedals or something.. I'd love to hear that!
I had read that the original reason for the bass drum shape on the old Trixon Vox kits in the 60's was so that you could set up your pedal in different spots to get different sounds and tunings out of the same drum. I've never had a chance to play one, so I can't confirm personally.
>me when I heard the company sent him this kit >if they're resorting to that they can't be good just a cheap ploy to prey on drum nostalgia >me when rdavidr started playing >boy was I wrong These sound amazing. Was totally not expecting that.
I knew you were going to make a video about this Vox drumkit! I even saw it in your last video when you restored the Fibes snare drum in good condition. plus if anybody is curious, look up the Speedfire by Trixon Drums. they're the originators of the odd shape drums.
You got an absolutely gorgeous pitch and sustain out of that bass drum! In combination with the open tom tuning it all sounds incredibly musical. I love it!
The Trixon bass drums had a divder in them and came with 2 nice bass drum pedals so you could get two sounds from the bass drums. Trixons were made in Germany and had Beech shells.
Dude. I’ve watched your channel before and didn’t realize I wasn’t subscribed until a couple days ago and now I can’t stop. I bought a snare not to long ago on Facebook and plan to buy something more. It came with the stand wich was a plus and now I’m making diy drum brick sticks and a drum pad which I’m currently on the hunt for materials. Hopefully I’ll get better and more motivated to continue making things and hopefully end up with a kit
i believe the purpose for the odd-shaped bass drum is to get different sounds out of it depending on where the pedal is placed. i've actually seen pictures of these kits with two pedals on the bass drum.
My first kit was a 65 Trixon Speedfire wrapped in white mother of pearl/ oyster. Needed a rock kit and didn't have room for both. They had all kinds of coverings like suede and crocodile. I used double pedal with connecting arm. Divider in bass drum is for strength, but gives two different sounds. Was a great kit.
id love to see/ hear audio comparisons of the kick pedal moved laterally to different positions. since you have that whole flat bottom you could theoretically have a double kick pedal sent to your other foot further to the left for a different tone.
I've genuinely been thinking of buying a new kit, and dammmm that sounds good. I cannot imagine the looks on my bandmates faces if I were to show up at a gig with that kick though.
Back around 1970, there was a drum company called Trixon, that also featured a melted bass drum as well as a cone shaped bass drum with a smaller head on the front. These Vox drums look and sound great but you have to wonder if replacement B.D. heads will be available in the future.
This is a Trixon copy bass drum, and Vox sold rebadged Trixon sets in the 60's so this is a cool continuation. Sounded way better than I expected. The Trixon bass drum had 2 chambers inside that allowed 2 different sounds (with 2 pedals).
Could you please explain how Vox gained the patent for Trixon's drum design, and the history behind the squished bass drum design? Could you also see if it's true that moving the position of where you hook up the bass drum pedal affects the pitch of the bass drum? What are the shell woods used, and why did Vox decide to revive the old Trixon design?
"Hey, do you guys have some bass drum batter heads in stock?" "Sure. What size do you need? 20 inch, 22, 24? I think we have some 18s too." "...uh....yes all of those..."
This kit is cool. I had to do a double-take when I saw the bass drum for the first time. It looks like somebody stood on top of it with both feet and warped it out of round. But the sound he gets from it is amazing. Where do you find heads for it? If nothing else it would make for a great conversation piece. And that finish is out of this world. Definitely a very unique drum set. Except I never really liked single braced Hardware. I always thought it doesn't stand up well to heavy playing. But I would play it just to see people's reaction
What would you play on this kit? 👀
Be sure to like, comment, share, and sub if you want to see more vids like this!
four out of five
I would play along to your tracks on this kit. It would be rare for me to play on it because I would non stop touch it.
Soooooo... how do you change that nice wonky head of yours?
Five out of five yes I would play it look interesting

Sounds like a proper vintage kit. But new.

Hits those tones so easily
I believe the original purpose of the bass drum shape when it came out in the 1960's was so that it could accommodate two bass drum pedals.
@Robyn James - Considering the set's price, they should've sent him a second pedal then, too!

It could have been so much easier. Then again, we wouldn’t have had this cool kit if someone’s fever dream didn’t come true
Genuinely surprised at how good this kit sounds.
it retails for almost 2k, so it should.. built by sakae...
I honestly was expecting a exact replica sound of the top O’ line first act kit! 🤷♂️
Sounds great tuned up, definitely getting that 60's psychedelic/Beatles-y vibe off it. Toms and kick are immense!
David's laugh at 3:40 is what the joy of playing drums is all about. Vinnie Paul would approve of this wrap. RIP.
You're probably right about VInnie. I'm thinking he might be more into rattlesnake skin though.
Rip vinnie man so sad dude him and his Brother where cool nice dudes and thats why they are my heros

I'd send it back. The bass drum has a flat.

A kick drum that is perpetually tripping on acid. Also, good luck finding a case for it! (I assume.)
David Houston Drums I bet an oversized bag would fit , but not snugly.
@David Houston Drums Good point but I'm more concerned with the fact that I won't be able to find a head for it or rather that it's gonna be pricey cuz it's a Remo exclusive.

I can make one simple

PORTHOLE?! NO!! My check of the price on the head is $275. You may be able to drop a mic through the tom mount.

I love that kit ,,even the old school Vox logo

Can't help notice how amazing the recording quality is getting in recent videos, sounds 10/10

The track playing over the kit setup portion is totally killer. Love your beatmaking bro
I really dig how those drums sound tuned high like that...very old school jazz bop.
it actually sounds great. love the toms.

According to another comment, BD heads can be ordered "direct from Remo and at a premium"!
This was probably mentioned in other comments but the reason for the weird bass drum is so you can get different tones from one bass drum without retuning the heads. Simply move the pedal to a different position.
But isn't it better to have to pedals instead of moving one any time you want a different sound? That doesn't look really comfortable tho
