Would you play the Vox Telstar? 👀
Yes
Yes
Looks like it would be fun the bass drum looks cool
Yup
Hey David, I noticed in the past few videos that you have been using Saluda cymbals. Are you endorsed?
Your bass drum’s a little low on air. You might need to inflate it a little
It melted in the sun
Lol.
Underrated comment 👆🤌
LOLOLOL
Dave: So imagine if a 26" bass drum, 18" floor tom and 12" rack tom had a baby, this would be it
The bass drum in my imagination: *KIIIIILL MEEEEE*
😂
@@rdavidr I know right, the ol' cross breeding joke. Gets me everytime. 😂😂😂
VOX should let David keep the kit. Upvote so they see THIS!
They won’t see this
@@vinceemery5943 Not with that attitude...
@@JulianFernandez lmfao 🤣, that was 👍
@@vinceemery5943 he kept the kit, so fuck you. :D
@@JulianFernandez i hope not the wa samm davis jr kept louie bellsons kit.
BRING BACK DOLLAR TREE DRUMMER
so a double bass pedal would have slightly different sounds? sounds cool
Interesting.
Dave posted a photo in his instagram where he attached two single pedals to this bass drum. Looks freaky. :) But without any audio example.
Well... more emphasized. Round bass drums have a slightly different sound between the beaters. Ideally, you want a slight difference in pitch. Even with triggers.
Mk Engrammatik is that so there’s less of a ‘machine gun effect’? I don’t tend to notice the difference in pitch when I listen to whatever death metal I choose haha. Does every band do it or is it more selective?
@@billybamdrumjam6619 You're right! Not every band EQs with raw drum tone. If a drummer uses a lot of double-strokes, they would want to have a matched tone to help sound consistent. (Although, the best players train for even strokes). In the modern digital era, it's becoming more of a preference. Hearing someone lay-down heavy gravs is badass!
Enough about the drums, those cymbals sound incredible and your playing sounds even better! Really enjoyed watching your skills progress over the years.
I don't care what it looks like, I REALLY like the sound of that thing. But, the look is growing on me. So, I would definitely like to have one
3:08 Also I'm pretty sure they would be siblings judging by how it turned out
I would love to see this in a weird double bass pedal configuration where one pedal is on the larger side and the other on the smaller side
I’m a huge Vox fan (I have 3 ac30s). The kit and your playing are great. Sounds amazing. Love your videos, even as a guitar player. I build my own partscaster guitars so I greatly appreciate your bits and bolts approach to being a musician.
Tony, I had no idea Vox made drums, and to see this. When Vox sponsored the amps on the Smother's Brothers show with the Who, playing "This is my generation", I don't think Moon was playing Vox drums. I think he had Premier. But the Vox 6 string and the Vox bass are both really great looking guitars, seen on that show (on youtube). Too bad Townsend busted up that beautiful Vox electric. There is one better looking bass IMO, which is the one played by the Searchers on the black and white youtube video, the Burns / Bison bass with the 3 chrome cross bars over the lowest pick up. To my knowledge, that is the only photo of the original Burns / Bison bass on the web that has the cross bars. It was reproduced 30 years later, but limited to 1,000 units. Vox certainly had the best looking stack amps, with the chrome frames, maybe not the most reliable, but still better looking than any other amps to date IMO.
I enjoyed this video. Your playing was exciting. Thank You,
Ted
Holy crap, your production quality is much better than the last time I tuned in. Looking great! Thank you for all the visuals and text overlays. And the camera quality is really solid. Love your channel!
Love your drumming, nice review. Thank you.
Going back in time again… I very much like the sound from this kit. So Cool!
all around great job. playing, review, production, editing...etc.
Honestly....it sounds excellent. Great full bodied not too warm kit/tuning. Id play it in a heartbeat.
I straight up love ur playing so much I'm still pretty new to drums n tryna copy some the stuff u played in this vid is the most fun I've had all week
Such a fun looking kit and it sounds great! Awesome video!
Just wanted to throw this out there but I love your playing style and you always have pull out some great beats and such
Looks cool, sounds cool! Alder shells are pretty dope. DDrum is big on using them.
Thanks for sharing! Great vid.
Im in love with these drums
I would most definitely play this kit ...no problem.
Hey! Honestly the kick drum sounds really well considering the shape! The snare is also nice, and the toms are ok. Thanks for buying all these weird kits so that we don't have to! :-)
Amazing kit!!
I would love this kit
You could use two pedals at once , one having different accessories on the beater and the other being standard , that's so cool
I would absolutely jam that kit!!
They sound great...and I love the look....yes I would play them😁👌👍
That bassdrum sounds amazing.
Saw this drum kit at NAMM and it's one of the best thing there!
That kit really sounds great. Records well.
I saw one they had at NAMM in January. At first glance I thought it seemed kinda gimmicky. I had pretty much all of the same questions you answered, but because of the NAMM Police I didn’t really get to play it. There was no throne at the kit, but it did have a pedal so I just got to stand behind it and hit the kick and drums lightly with sticks. I’m sure if I got a full chance to test one at full volume I may change my mind. Great video!
I’m definitely interested in this thing now. I picked up a vintage Ludwig club date a couple years ago as an alternative to my Starclassic B/B but it just feels too fragile for me to use extensively. This gives a cool weird vintage vibe but I wouldn’t be so afraid to wail on it, and it sounds great.
HOLY SHEETTT ONE OF MY FAV BEATS YOUVE MAADE 8:02😳🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
i see this kit excelling at a gig(s) where you literally use the whole spectrum of sound offered by the bass drum. something jazzy for a smaller side of the bass drum, and something boomy for the larger end. for my needs and applications though, i think i would use it for novelty and not as a working kit.
thanks for the video though! ive seen this kit kicking around for years and ive had sooo many questions haha!
That is your best sounding kit IMO
Thanks for the great vid! Can you tell us more about the ride? It sounds awesome!
I've seen that Vox kit so often in Pintertest, and at the Reverb site; but now I finally got to see what it really is
and how it sounds "under the hood". This video is outstanding, and you did a terrific job breaking down that kit
to the science and sounds of it. Awesome!
Would I ever own (or at least play) that kit? I dunno... the shape of that kick drum makes me feel kinda
squeamish about this kit. Perhaps I'd camp out in the woods, inside that kick drum as a trailer! LOL
On the real, tho... it would probably take me a long time to warm up to that kit, because of that
weird kick drum shape. The small side of that kick drum front head would be a cool spot
to install a sub-kick low frequency mic... THAT would look really cool!
For the time being, Remo will only make coated drum heads for that shape and That particular drum kit.
The best advantage I see about that kit is its retro look. That drum wrap has a nice "alligator" texture.
Another great advantage: the front head of that Kick drum would be interesting to see some
tricked-out psychedelic band logos painted onto it.
I almost thought that kit was made out of stainless steel because of that wrap, until you showed the shells.
When I first look at that kick drum I think it's Cadillac As Fk, which makes it visually intriguing.
That drum kit would perfectly suit bands like Los Straitjackets, and The Fleshtones.
I like the sound of those thick shells, especially that kick drum... they remind me of the vintage Ludwig
drum kits from the 70s, and those kits back then had (still have) have a precise Punchy sound when used
with coated Remo Emperor heads, in my opinion. That kick drum wins Bonus points for its Punch.
From a purist perspective, and for consistency, I would use the hardware that comes with this kit; chalk it
up to the vintage style of the hardware which compliments this kit.
But, as a garage-rock drummer, I would swap that hardware for Heavy-Duty hardware because
I tend to be an aggressive player (I'm 55yo, pounding my drums like a 20yo hardcore metal kid, lol).
Visually, that Vox drum kit would fit the style of my 3-piece garage-rock band The VaVaVoodoos
because the other two band members are into the retro 60s garage-punk style, and they're from
the old-school Sgt. Pepper rock frame of mind that "a band should look as good as they sound",
therefore they would be stoked if I were to bring this Vox drum kit onstage with them.
As always, Thanks for your awesome videos!
I'd play it. Looks like a lot of fun, actually!
thanks for the info
3 sounds on the same BD. Nice!
Lets all vote that Vox just sponsor you and give it to you for your channel.
This is the second time you've sold me on a product. I bought the Duallist drum pedal for quick and easy double-bass while still having high hat control. But, the thing I don't like about the Duallist is switching back and forth from single and double kick. I'm sure I could get used to it but, since this drum sounds good, I bought the Vox bass drum off of Reverb and plan on putting a normal two-pedal double kick on it it, right next to the Duallist. Easy singles, easy doubles, easy triplets, easy switching between all of them. 4 beaters, 3 pedals, 1 bass drum. I think I may have teetered well over the precipice of madness, thanks to you.
Yes, I would play it.
the sound really reminds me of the old drum samples from old nujabes tunes. very nice sharp dry sound
amazing video ! thanks! i personally dont like the look.. but it really sounds amazing.. but i give you the credit for that.. great tuning great mic'ing and great playing is in my opinion 80% of the sound.. i just stubled on this video.. im definitely following liking and all ..im.hoping you have videos of your mic'ing and sound setup.. i think this is the best sounding drum ive heard on youtube and instagram.. and i watch a lot ! thanks again ! amazing and simple video!✌❤
The alder construction leads me to believe that this was made in the same factory the ddrum used for its Reflex drum kits. Having a lot of experience with those drums, alder is a great wood that is plentiful and has a great low-mid fundamental. I wish more companies would get hip to its benefits.
When I got replacement heads for my 65? Trixon Speedfire bass drum in 91, I had to mail old heads to Remo because they said there are many sizes. Not sure if it was variations in the molds? Came with animal skin bass drum heads, replaced with fiberskyn heads. The Speedfire had a partition that gave you two sounds i/i and strength for crazy multi tom setups.
I love that kick.
It looks like one functional aspect of the pear shaped bass drum is the lower side of the drum would allow you to have your snare drum positioned some what over the top of the bass drum, where that may not be possible with a round bass drum, especially if you have a mounted tom in the front of the snare. The drum pedal sounds better to me when you play it on the larger portion of the drum head.
Vox made some of the best looking equipment in music, guitars, amps, and I had no idea they made drums. Really like what I hear.
It’s a pretty cool looking kit. I have visions of a double kick set up..........
would definitely play this kit, has a great sound, just dont ever see them anywhere till this video
looks like a fun little drum set for the price. certainly not a high line kit, but a nice deal with the hardware included. I'm old 60 years, when I was a teenager my friend had one of these with 4 tom-toms.
It’s the eleph....no, no...the bass drum in the room. Head changes! That’s the big one for me. We all like to change heads around but sometimes it’s a necessity.
(One should always watch the full video before commenting but it’s 1:55am here so...)
Oh and thank you for the great videos!
That kick is wide enough for two pedals at once -- a different take on double bass pedals. Have you tried this? Curious....
Joel Cameron. That's a good point because these had 2 pedals back in the 60's. My buddy had one of the old ones. It had 2 bass pedals and 3 ride toms and a floor tom. Fun to see they did a reboot on these.
Dang dats pretty cool dude!
As far as drum heads for the toms & snare I would probably go with either Remo Coated Pinstripes or Coated Emperors for the batter side. Finally, the kit would be paired up with a set of Zildjian A Series Cymbals to complete it.
thx!
You can put 2 pedals on the bass drum and do a tight double-bass!
I think it's a killer kit. It would make an interesting jazz kit.
I really want to see two of these next to each other with one mirrored for a double kick set up.
It would be cool to have an optional mirror-image bass with the internal mufflers also flip-flopped so that this could be set up in a classic double-bass, two-aerial tom, floor tom configuration. It's merely a matter of visual 'wow factor', but you could get six separate kit looks with a reverse-build kick option: right-squish single; left-squish single; double-right squish; double-left squish; double-internal squish; double-external squish. 'Melt' or 'Warp' if you prefer. : ] Double-bass would be a killer look with this set. The position of the cymbal bracket would likely be an issue, as might the tom arm length. There might be a compatible external hardware option, or a way of using the cymbal mount bracket as a tom mount if the tubes are the same diameter and the mount could safely support the weight and bear the mechanical stress of being played. : ]
the first thing i thought when i saw this drum was "Finally i don't have to get two sepred kick drums!!!"
Louis Cole was on the YT channel Dead Wax about 11 months ago talking about how he has his drums set up. I would love to see a video of you setting up a kit like his, testing it out, and talking about it.
he hit us with the ph intro at 2:29 xD
Yes, I’d play it live
8:02 , thats the sweetbeat challenge!!
Sounds like a slightly lower tuning? Like your drumming, nice grooves. Thanks for posting.
Seems like you could have 2 contrasting kicks like Russ Miller but really just mount 2 pedals on the one drum pretty far into each side. If you timed it right you could probably make them different enough to be semi worthwhile for getting a big and little sound.
You made it sound amazing but would like to head some samples with a room mic, no processing
David, man I’m really surprised how good the kit sounded especially the kick! Very cool, I don’t think I’d want to own one. Great playing also! Thanks for the vid! ✌🏼
The beat you played at 5:50 , that one was all foreplay and buildup and it bugged me the whole time waiting for a crash to come in
Is there such a thing as too much pocket?
Would like to see your review of North and Staccato drums! Someone send David a set😁
Damn your fill at the start of the video was sweet
Would definitely recommend adding a bass drum anchor to stop the creeping. My vintage premier has the same non-spiked spurs and the anchor is a gift!
Ive had no issue with creeping. I guess thats another perk of the shape!
@@rdavidr Thats good to see, just looked like it a bit in the OH shots.
I saw your Instagram post it’s really good
I wonder if you got double bass pedal and tuned each side of the drum to different pitches and get two different sounds
meze classic neos! pretty spicy my guy
This is what happens when you leave your kick drum unattended in a hot car on a hot day...
Don't do it, kids.
Hope you did a reboxing video too. This is what happens when someone sits on your kick drum
How would you replace the kick skin when you break it on the road? (Of course, you carry 1-2. ...but when you break 3 on one trip?!?)
Looks like the lug casings from ROC drums back in the 80's.
So is it actually possible to play it like a double bass drum without the snare stand being in the way?! And yeah, I'd play that kit :-)
What did you put in the bass to make it sound good?
Are you going to install a baffle on yours? My understanding, from what I've read about the Trixon, is that the baffle was a really key part of the original design, getting the different sounds from either side. The picture you show in the video suggests it would be a relatively easy thing to add. Also looks like you could make it removable, just a flexi sheet of something you could slide in and out.
The bass drum looks like something out of a Salvatore Dolly painting
That hardware looks like it belongs on First Act drum set
Am i the only one thinking two bass pedals with different tunings on each side? maybe one beater with fleece?
Tyler Marino that was the point of the original with the center baffle. Two single pedals each with a different pitch.
It's a cool kit. Seems like it could be well placed in a Batman movie in a scene at some weird club where the villains hang out. I don't think I'd spend the money though. Maybe in 20 years someone will drop one at a Goodwill, all beat up, needing some love. I'll be there.
It's quite cool and sounds nice I just think it's weird they made that beautiful shape then covered it in a wrap.. Wouldn't it look cool raw timber? I guess because the drums are different wood types but I think that would just add to it, I dig the weird sizes too you know it's going to sound unique
Wonder what it'd be like to set up a double kick pedal on as far apart as possible. If the small side was tuned up enough could be like having a third tom?
God they sound good!!!
I usually play ska and punk, and it sounds like if I played on that thing it would give it a great vintage garage sound to what I do. I'd love to get some Meinl Classics Custom Darks on that sucker, throw a ching ring on the snare, and turn every punk song I play into a British Invasion sound!
But alas... finances kinda suck right now. Oh well. Maybe later.
Great dry sound, totally at home in a 60’s cover band or a jazz setting. Sounds great
Not a fan of the wrap, but I would play it still. Sounds great.
Hola amigo muy buen video, en donde se puede conseguir parches para el bombo?
You ever thought of sampling your drums? Like the Kicks, Cymbals, Snares and Toms separately for viewers to use in their music? OI really love the tone of that kick.
OK, but can you put two kick pedals on this bass drum and play bleed by meshuggah?
You mean like two single pedals on the one drum?
Someone please do this
I would play this kit, but would have to unload more drums than I want to offset the cost. But cool and thanks for reviewing it.
