Wow...My neighbor had Trixon Speedfire set in the light blue sparkle and he let me play it a few times! He got them new at Des Moines House of Music..He had a traveling rock band that played all over Iowa...the year was 1967or 68...So nice to see those again...I remember the drums sounded great and the snare was mounted to the bass and had 2 bass drum pedals!
My first "nice" drumset was the Trixon Speedfire in the same color as these with the elliptical bass drum, the hanging tom, a huge floor tom*(seemed huge-sounded huge), 20" Zildjian ride cymbal and 5x14" snare. The front head on the bass drum was calf skin and looked to be stretched across the shell then held in place with a normal rim. The batter head had the normal hoop albeit elliptical. I played those from 7th grade till 11th with a band that was amazingly good to be just kids. The best thing about the Trixon drums, other that the curious stares and interest, was setting up in only minutes because I'd leave the hanging tom and cymbal mounted. Just carry that in, plop it down, go grab the high hat, snare and floor tom, hook up the bass drum pedals. Ready to rock. My high hat was stripped from using 16" cymbals but that left my left foot open for the bass drum. Yes, Steve you could use both pedals if you were young, dumb and full of determination.
Anyway... Traded that set to a guy for a bass and and amp and left sweating behind the drums behind. I still remember the way the inside of those Trixon drums smelled. It was a wonderful thing and a hint of a different world.
Just watched your video Steve and was surprised to see them all looking fantastic still. I paid £60.00 for a four piece Tixon kit back in the early 70's and I still have it in the loft getting cold and older.....................How time flies.
I played on Trixon drums for at least 14 years very good drums .
Really cool the fab four of VOX drums from the 60s.l had one kit exactly like the red sparkle with the VOX logo on the front. Rugged and good sound.
The aqua sparkle is my favorite.
yes the aqua sparkle is my favorite as well ...
I'm guessing these came from Zieglers Music in Aurora. That guy had a ton of NOS stuff that I personally don't think he ever really wanted to sell. Fun fact: my very first hi hat stand was a Trixon flat base stand w/tube legs that came from his shop.
It would be hell to get heads for them !!
Theres at trixon set for sale in denmark rigtig now. With eliptical bass drum. It's a 7 piece set.
What a find! All that history as they sat around not being used is simply amazing.
Buddy Rich played Trixon briefly in '67 and hated them.
These kits are stunning, gig worthy or not would LOVE to have something like this in my drum room one day. I will have to make the trek to your shop some time!
Wow, what an incredible find! I love the "flat tire" bass drum.
Gretsch had a flat bottom bass drums way back in the 70's. Nothing new here.
@@3RTracing since Trixon did this in the 50s , Gretsch probably tried it out. You're right though.. nothing's new!
@@3RTracing yo nobody cares who did what first, OP is just a fan of the drum shape.
@@3RTracing -- As said, these are from the early '60. Smug comments from assholes are nothing new.
Gotta be from Faust Music in Milwaukee; I was there in ‘86 and thought I’d walked “through the looking glass”!...
(Was playing The Abbey in Lake Geneva.)
Another great vid from Steve. :-) I was hoping to hear how they sounded, particularly the set with the "elipitcal" bass. I had a fellow drummer friend in high school in the 60s who had a Trixon set with that style bass. We used to go and see each other's bands play at dances at our youth center, and I remember that bass because I'd never seen one like it before. How 'bout a sound check? :-)
Wow Steve!
For a quick minute I thought you
have brought back Trixon!
fantastic Trixon collection , congratulation !!!
I have a conical Trixon kit with the conical snare drum. It is fun to play although I only use it for light gigs.
Amazing, very eye catching, don’t know how the flat shaped bass drum would sound. Love to try them.!!!
You really know your stuff Steve. My Pops, Stan Levey, loved the restoration you did on his snare, 1929 6 lug Ludwig that I still have.
Glad to see you are still doing Great
bl
Hi Bob!!!!! Hope you are well! I really enjoyed restoring Stan’s snare. That was a blast and I loved the fact that he was so pleased. Stay well! Steve

You too Steve.
Blessings
thanks steve amazing drums nos, thanks for sharing.
I bet those kits are worth money today.
Outstanding 🤘
Lovely drum sets. That one bass drum could use a little air though.
COOLEST THING I'VE SEEN IN A LONG WHILE
from faust in milwaukee ? tried to buy one for years.
Biasco Music on Belmont Ave. The Luddy red/yellow/orange acrylic kit with lights sat in the window for years!!! Long walks to Biasco just to tick off the house guys to go downstairs and stare at drums for hours lolololol
incredible!!!
Logo is crooked on the red one and it’s bothering me
Strangely, the logo was originally skewed that way: www.drumarchive.com/Trixon/PerfectionSound61.pdf
Any of these would look phenomenal on stage.
Four years on I'm guessing that these all sold a long time ago. ; ]
I'd wonder if Trixon was a Sonor spin-off, being German, or if they were supplied by Sonor. These are in remarkable condition for being born in the Mid-Century Modern era, and Sonor's quality really is legendary. I have an old Signature Series set from the late 1980s with chroming that has defied time and exposure that would and does claim that of other brands by blistering, pitting and rusting. The 'screwdriver' type tension rods are a Sonor hallmark, too. Hmm.
I'm sure a lot of viewers are vintage fans and know that he Speedfire were re-branded VOX for the American market, but there's also a recent VOX re-issue of this in all of its warped, melted, flat-tire magnificence, minus the baffle originally found in the Trixon bass to further divide it into an approximation of two distinctly different bass drum sounds. Neat drums. : ] I if I remember correctly, the Speedfire with the flat-bottom kick didn't have the conical shells for the other drums. It would have been cool if that pairing were offered. Talk about an even cooler-looking odd set.
Yes, all sold long ago. I do have a red sparkle kit on Reverb right now. Steve
Am you got lucky. Would love to know how much you paid for the flat tire set
Funky
wow !!!!!😯
Could you even get a replacement head these days for the elliptical bass drum?
Yes, they make replacement heads for the elliptical drum . Yes you can get a new one.
Remo makes a special order
+stevemaxwelldrums *Trixon® must have a lock on unusual drum tapers.* The gold-sparkle kit is nigh onto impossible to re-head due to the unusually-shaped bearing edges, so would best be a window kit for the entrance, ideally with all the correct arms.
i would assume these have round over edges?
Yellow bass drum seems emerged from a Salvador Dali's painting.
Vox has just re-released the Telstar kit.
Persistence of Time……signature?!?!?!!!!!
The only band I ever saw with these drums was Liverpool Five at an appearance at a 7 Up wet and wild party circa 1966, down town at a department store in St. Louis. I thought they sounded great.
Ha ha.... Saw LP5 often in Seattle and Tri-Cities (Richland Roller Rink) back in mid-60s. And Yep, drummer had blue alligator skin Trixons with a pair of giant rack toms up front. They did indeed sound great.
I wonder whatever happened to the machines for the bass drums.
not sure. there was a german company making reproductions of the speedfire shells ten years ago.

Does anyone know if the machines for the bass drums still exist?
Vox has just started selling them again as the Telstar, in the Trixon Silver Croco finish.
WOW
Blablahblahablah just hit the fucking things!!!!! They're musical instruments , the most important thing is what they sound like.
Don't break a head or your finished.
Turn the bass drums around. They will be megaphones.
Nick Mason played a VOX kit on American Bandstand 1967 . Great write-up on Karl Weimer:

Shame they wont be played and heard
Ok, I get it. We don't get to actually hear the drums. This is just a commercial.
I hate the idea of these just going in a class case. These should be studio kits in someone's vintage-style studio.
These were all sold by me to people who will play them. So, I feel as if was we rescued them and they can now fulfill their destiny, which is to make music.
Ô véio, e o som? iii....
