Space Ritual is a brilliant, brilliant album! I recorded / produced a band for virtually nil money, and the bassist (a big Hawkwind fan) gave me a vinyl copy of Space Ritual. I already knew the album from many years before, and was knocked out by this band's kind gesture.
I'm not a massive Hawkwind fan but I think their album: Quark, Strangeness and Charm is a complete masterpiece, easily one of the best recordings of the 70's and in my top 20 albums of all time.
The first band I ever saw live, 1973 Leeds Space Ritual tour. I was 17, had no idea how lucky I was. Then they released the whole gig on a double album and I've been listening ever since. I've not seen a better concert, nor heard a better album in the following 47 years!
Same here, I have all the vinyl albums up to the early 90's then the rest are digital versions (around 75 in total not counting associated bands such as Alan Davey, Hawklords, Hugh Lloyd Langdon, Inner City Unit, Nik Turner, Steve Swindells and several others. Unfortunately it's been a long time since I last saw them live, though I have tried to keep tabs on them. I used to go to at least one concert a year from the amazing Space Ritual (one of my favorite Hawkwind Albums) to Chronicles of the Black Sword, though I took my 18 year old daughter to a Hawkwind benefit gig in 1994 at Gillies in Manchester (Oxford Road) for her 18th birthday. I remember sitting just back from the main stage in the middle of the band members or Rage Against the Machine Bullet in the Head), who shared all their spliffs with me (great guys). On leaving the gig, I almost crashed into the taxi that Dave Brock was taking after the taxi pulled out in front of me when I was dismounting the pavement where I'd parked my motorcycle, I ended up leaning on the passenger window and came face to face with Dave. Another time (during the Live 79 concerts (Preston Guild Hall) I was a little late and ran into Michael Moorcock, literally. I remember he was wearing his Levi jacket with a Dan Dare patch on the breast pocket; the same jacket that features on the back of many of his eternal champion books. He did sonic attack with them. If I was only able to take one groups or artists recorded material with me to a desert island it would be Hawkwind. I've been into them ever since my brother brought home the first Album. When I was doing my finals at uni' I used to play 'You shouldn't do that' (and some Amon Dull II tracks from Dance of the Lemmings while smoking my head into oblivion for a few hours.
@@seaoftranquilityprog Bit more then an oversight mate. Bob Calvert Was Hawkwind for a while there. Shame he went beyond the outer limits and never came back
I'm glad I never got rid of my vinyl collection as I'm now the proud owner of several Hawkwind albums from the 1970's with their amazing artwork and fold out sleeves.
Thanks a lot Pete one of my favourite bands ever. Saw them at least six times in England , My top five are 1 Hall of the mountain grill, 2 Warrior on the edge of time, 3 Levitation, 4 Church of Hawkwind, 5 Quark strangeness and charm .
The 'Quark' LP is their career highlight for me. Robert Calvert (RIP) was a genius, a gifted writer and brilliant performer and (in my brief experience of meeting him two or three times) an absolute gent.
I agree about Hall Of The Mountain Grill being their best! I saw that show at the Hammond (Indiana) Civic Center. It was a last minute deal. A friend of mine couldn't go and gave the tickets to me. Great Seats ~ Great Show ~ Great Album..........Thanks Rodge!
@@ronniefarnsworth6465 Issues my ass. Everyone knows SR is their best. But you can NOT include that when listing/rating STUDIO albums. Lord, they got enough live releases to do that list separately anyways. You have a problem because I'm right? Well, tough-tittie!
What a fantastic rating! Before watching your run down i scribbled down my top 3. 1 Search of Space. 2. Warrior Edge of Time. 3. Doremi. Wow! the best band I ever watched live. All upto Masques 1982.
Hawkwind and acid went hand in hand back in prime time. Those of us who took the music seriously back then knew what the buzz of choice was for each particular band. Miss those days and those friends who have concluded their time on this earth. For those of us still here I say Rock on to the end!!!!
1st time I took acid in 1972 someone put om In Search Of Space & handed me a set of headphones. I played it all night from cover to cover & when I came down enough read the logbook. What a voyage of discovery that night was. Loved them ever since. My all time favorite for tripping is Spaceritual. It can't be beaten for psychedelics where your not so high that music i9s a distraction. I'd love to do an Aldous Huxley & die tripping as I've has enough little deaths already I'm doing a Timothy Leary & looking forward to the adventures of the Bardo experiences!~
@M. B-EE You've got to be joking. Even on the back of the cover of the eponymous Hawkwind album, they state it's made for acid users....! In fact, you need to hear Hawkwind on acid to really understand it. Weeds are good too, but they just don't throw the doors near as wide open.
1 Warrior on the Edge of Time 2 Hawklords (25 years on) - it's been retconned as a real Hawkwind album 3 Quark Strangeness & Charm 4 Hall of the Mountain Grill 5 Levitation 6 Astounding Sounds Amazing Music 7 Doremi fasol latido 8 in search of space 9 PXR5 10 Hawkwind (Masters of the Universe was the first Hawkwind LP I bought - Then Space Ritual) The "Big Three" to me was Brock, Calvert & Turner...
1. LEVITATION.... 2. THE CHRONICLES OF THE BLACK SWORD.... 3. WARRIOR ON THE EDGE OF TIME.... 4. ALIEN 4.... 5. P.X.R. 5.... 6. DOREMI FASOL LATIDO.... 7. ELECTRIC TEPEE.... 8. YULE RITUAL....2000.
Hall of the Mountain Grill is my favorite but I can't possibly rank them all. Like you said they have a million albums and so many of them are equally good as each other.
I saw Hawkwind on the Chronicle of the Black Sword tour, what an awesome gig! Fave albums, Chronicle, Warrior on the Edge of Time, PXR5, Quark Strangeness & Charm and Levitation.
For those who followed the mid-70's Hawkwind movement, HAWKLORDS was a great side project. Hawkwind in their prime, even without the presence of the great Lemmy on bass!
Hawklords - 25 Years On is for me the best _Hawkwind_ album. I scoff at those who try to argue that it was not really Budgie Fart; of course it was. Plus, Hawkwind play them live.
My father is a big Hawkwind fan, so i grew up with this fantastic music. When i was young he often gives me a warning, that it would be dangerous to listen this music in combination with driving a car. He said, if you do, these special kind of weired soundstructures will blow up your brain an you'll loose controll over the car. Sometimes a really good friend from my dad comes to visit us and then they listened the whole evening Hawkwind, Jimi Hendrix and Black Sabbath Lps. One day his friend died by a car accident on the Autobahn when he left us. In the cassette recorder from his car they found a Hawkwind mixtape. The music had stopped by the song "master of the universe"... Rest in peace Jason... From my youth until now i often remembered this day. Especially when i hear Hawkwind on the Autobahn now. In some kind of way it's not so redicules as somebody maybe think it is. I often found myself watching the tachometer by 220 km/h thinking, what the fu.. you're doing here. You're sitting in an old BMW and not in a starship... Silver machine, Lord of light, Brainstorm or Master of the universe are really songs which can push you forward an lead you in other spheres. Hawkwind is music for advanced listeners which can deal with the risk. Beginners should start like this: 1.) Drink some beers, smoke a cigarette or something else. 2.) Lay on your couch and close your eyes. 3.) Start listening to other incredible HW-songs like "Magnu" or "Highrise". Feel how the music is unlocking the door to the hiddenest parts of your brain... Enjoy... Your "Brainstorm" is coming soon... Greetings from Germany! And sorry... I know my English is not the yellow from the egg.
Hawkwind stay with you for life. My first ever rock concert was a Hawk gig. I was a young, impressionable 13 year old in 1979. The venue was the Liverpool Empire. I remember being so impressed by all the weird and wonderful hippies...their clothes and long hair. The fabulous music, the lights and lasers, the dry ice, the volume (loud) ...wow. Hooked forever. Saw them quite a few times over the years. Over 40 years later I am still playing my Hawkwind LP's.
Ah you've seen the documentaries where they palyed around with in audible low and high frequencies to see the effect it had on people. Crap you pants with the low frequency and puke with the high frequency sounds.
A British national treasure and one of the greatest live bands of all time (still). Thanks Pete, a very hard choice especially considering the size of the back catalogue. One of my greatest live experiences was at a Robert Calvert tribute concert with Hawkwind and loads of associated acts. For the final encore a giant figure strode onto the stage and proceeded to pummel out the classic bass intro to Master of the Universe...Lemmy. What a moment.
Pete, of the lesser known bands I had never listened to before coming to your channel, this is the best yet. What a great band with awesome tracks and albums galore.
Hawkwind is a supremely underrated band. If it weren't for them, we wouldn't have had Motorhead, Punk, and many other things in general. They should be in the R&R hall of fame
Pretty sure Punk would still have happened without Hawkwind (did you ever hear the MC5 in the late 1960s?) ... they pioneered Trance 20 years in advance (e.g. Orgone Accumulator live in 1972 etc) though ...
Great choices. Warrior would be number 1 for me then hall , doremi , space ritual ,blacksword. I've been lucky enough to meet all members over the years and done some roadie ing for them . All polite ,nice guys.great fun. Like tull ,there's no one else quite like them .
Your appreciation of Hawkwind is great. After 50 years not everybody gets them. But I do love your balanced view of other Brit bands. Who knew you'd appreciate 10CC and Sweet to name 2. What about Slade singles. Ever heard of em? Crikey Noddy Holders voice. Epic.
Pretty much agree with the list there, although I was always a fan of the album Xenon Codex too. The synth section of the track 'Neon Skyline' takes me there, every time!
My introduction with the band was the LP on Pete's t shirt. I agree with all that say that the best is Space Ritual. The ranking of the studio works is: Hall of the mountain grill - Warrior on the edge of time - In search of space - Levitation - Quark strangeness and charm - Doremifasolatido - Astounding sounds amazing music - The chronicle of the black sword - Hawkwind - Space bandits - Electric teepee - Xenon codecs. But I really like everything they put out. The Hawklords project is very good, and so are the Robert Calvert solo works that have a lot of Hawkwind members in them
Great to see someone reviewing Hawkwind. I've been a fan for 40 yrs. My first album was live '79. I've got all the albums you had in your top 15. My fav is chronicle of the black sword. I saw that toured. Brilliant. 👍🤘
I saw it to at The Apollo Theatre in Manchester. Brilliant concert. Sadly that was the last official tour I attended apart from a benefit gig in 1994 (took my daughter for her 18th birthday). Live got in the way after starting a second family. :(
Agree 100% with the comment below, Quark is a fantastic album which, for me, hasn't dated one bit , is easily one of their most accessible albums and benefits massively from Bob Calvert's fantastic lyrics and brilliant post (maybe even pre!!) , punk vocals. Genius from start to finish!!
Studio albums: 1. Warrior on the edge of time 2. Hall of the mountain grill 3. In search of space 4. Doremi fasol latido 5. Quark Strangeness and Charm 6. Levitation 7. Hawklords/ 25 years on 8. Hawkwind (1st) 9. Astounding sounds, amazing music 10. PXR5 11. Xenon Codex 12. The Chronicle of the black sword 13. Electric Tepee 14. Sonic attack 15. Space bandits Live albums: 1. Space Ritual 2. Stonehenge- This is Hawkwind, Do not panic 3. Live Chronicles 4. Live '79
Hawkwind is one of my favorite bands! I am delighted that you decided to rank their albums. Here are my top five: 1. Space Ritual 2. Warrior at the Edge of Time 3. Quark, Strangeness and Charm 4. Hall of the Mountain Grill 5. PXR5. Their catalog is filled with so much amazing work! It is difficult to pick favorites. I had the pleasure of meeting Nik Turner and his band twice during the last decade when he played at the Middle East in Cambridge, MA. He was very approachable and completely fascinating.
Hawkwind, what an amazing and unique band! Incredibly original, incomparable to anyone else. Pioneered an entire genre single-handedly. One thing I love is that they were never static in their sound and always changing. Decade by decade Dave Brock evolved and pushed the ship onward. Plus it gave us one of the best guitarists ever, Huw Lloyd-Langton who is missed dearly. And they are still going!
I like all the usual bands that are covered on review/reaction videos etc. Floyd, Genesis, Yes, Tull and so on but here with you we also get Renaissance, Hawkwind, Wishbone Ash and other great bands that aren't often talked about. So thank you Pete for all your good work!
I was fortunate to witness Hawkwind live in 1974 , Lemmy's before last show, in Montreal. It was such an out of body experience (very loud and very visual) that I could not listen to music for 2 days being numb, as everything sounded dull . Powerful musical hypnosis !
My favourite band for a few years when I was late teens, early 20s. I had been looking for a heavy rock band that used lots of synthesizers and chanced upon Sonic Attack and Levitation which are both so heavy (must hear them again). Now agree with your top 2 although probably in opposite order - 1. Warrior On The Edge. 2. In The Hall - both tremendous. Warrior is their most prog album. Great covers too.
Being a Hawkwind fan since 1973, and having done presentations on their music, (I have pretty much all of it), I was very pleasantly surprised to see you had the same picks for #1 and #2 that i have. Well done.
Until about six months ago I think that I owned their whole catalog, but I needed to do some weeding and they were on the list. I'm just going to rank the ones I actually own now. 11) Church Of Hawkwind 10) PXR5 9) All Aboard The Skylark 8) Hawkwind 7) Chronicle Of The Black Sword 6) Levitation 5) Quark, Strangeness & Charm 4) Doremi Fasol Latido 3) X In Search Of Space 2) Warrior On The Edge Of Time 1) Hall Of The Mountain Grill Our lists contain pretty much the same stuff, other than I have their latest on my list. Something about "...Skylark" really clicked with me. Thanks, Pete!
My absolute favourite Hawkwind album would be Live 79, however this list is studio albums so I'd have to go PXR5, particularly High Rise, Robot, Death Trap and Jack of Shadows. Bob Calvert adds something special to Hawkwind IMO.
One of my favorite bands, thanks Pete! I'm more of a metal guy, so my fave albums were more from the 80's (plus Live '79 album). I'll rank the ones you did. The only album with both Ginger Baker and Tim Blake gets my #1. 1. Levitation 2. Warrior On The Edge 3. Chronicles (Live one better!) 4. Sonic Attack 5. Doremi Fasol Latido 6. Choose Your Masques 7. Hall of the Mountain Grill 8. Hawkwind 9. Electric Teepee 10. Space Bandits 11. PXR5 12. In Search of Space 13. Church of Hawkwind 14. Quark 15. Astounding Sounds If I'd ranked all their albums, I'd put Live '79 #2, Live Chronicles #3, Space Ritual #7, Xenon Codex #9. Cheers!
“ Nik Turners Inner City Unit “ - Post-Punk Stoner hilarity with songs like “ they’re gonna raise the bones of Elvis “ & “ I wanna come back from the world of LSD “ and “ welcome to forbidden planet “ 😁❤️Thankyou Mr Pete.
The late Judge Trev Thoms personally sent me a copy of The Maximum Effect as all vinyl copies had long gone here in Australia, they used to play Bones Of Elvis on 2JJ a radio station here, so I found his website, he was very obliging, don't know if Nik knew this? I treasure this!!!!!
malekmo60 Good for you fella - that DJ and station beats the heck out of the Homogeneous Shite served up along the FM dial in southern england now and then. Apart from evening bbc radio 1 and radio 2 it’s the same old same old year after year . I could moan for an hour but thank The Gods for the Web which gives us Real “ Diversity “ 😁. I got to see Nik T at Stonehenge in 82 83 or 84 ( 85 was Prevented by Mrs Thatchers Stormtroopers 🙄) Best Wishes from the new forest
This is now the 3rd time I have watched this ranking, just love love love all things Hawkwind... see a lot of people, in the comments, upset about what "wasn't said" and "who wasn't given credit" etc. I think to truly cover ALL of what Hawkwind is, was, who, phases etc. it would be an hour long + video. Which I would be here for a "complete Hawkwind history," but who's gonna take that challenge on? All in all great job Pete!
The Hawks was the first band I ever saw, on Sunday, February 9th 1975 at Hammersmith Odeon. Lemmy and Stacia were in the group at the time. They were great. Fashions come and go, but the Hawks have remained timeless. From 1971 - 75, they couldn't put a foot wrong. Born To Go!
Pete. Did you not mention Robert Calvert? Maybe you did but I missed it. Also Michael Moorcock, classic sci fi writer on Warrior on the Edge and Sonic Attack. My number one will always be Warrior so thanks for ranking it so high. First time I saw Hawkwind was on the Levitation tour and I saw them every year for about ten years. Also saw Huw Lloyd Langton live twice and got to meet him. My top 3 overall would probably be Warrior, Space Ritual and Quark. I have a plethora(nice word) of HW albums. I think Church was actually a Dave Brock solo album that ended up as a Hawkwind album as it had HW members guesting on it. Another great live album is Live Chronicles. Basically the Chronicles of the Black Sword tour, which I also went on. Fantastic memorable evening. At a loose connection you could also include Brian Blessed as a member as he sung(?) a version of Sonic Attack.
Over the years I've found that being a Hawkwind fan and a James Bond fan have a 'debatable' link. You tend to fall in love with the album/movie that was released when you were of a certain age, say 10 - 14 years old and the time you first experienced them. I first heard Hawkwind and Levitation when I was 12 and this has been my favourite album to this day. :-)
Glad you did hawkwind, sea of tranquility. My favourite band. Like everyone, I have my own order, but your top four would be in my top 5, (but the black sword would come last I'm afraid, just too straight hard rocky for me) I also love Palace springs from 1990, Blood of the Earth, from 2010, and The Machine Stops, from 2016, and the two three piece albums in 1992-1993, Its the Business of the Future to be Dangerous and Electric Teepee, are all great later albums for me. Oh and a bug shout out to the wonderful Robert Calvert, who I suspect you may if forgot to mention when mentioning ex members. Well maybe, ha.
One of my favourite bands of all time. Always seemed to be touring and managed to see them many times in the 70's. Always great live - never seemed to play the same set twice, never seemed to take a break from start to finish. Today, still love turning the lights down and listening to several hours of Hawkwind - which is possible as it is so varied. Would be hard to pick the top studio album, but you did a pretty good job on this. Would be hard to argue either way. But you have to listen to a live Hawkwind concert to fully appreciate them and luckily there are plenty on UA-cam
The Hawks and Sabbath were the first bands i was drawn too... still love them today....a pleasure to watch this Pete.....Hey, Ginger Baker tried to steal Hawkwind away from Brock...
great video pete...every time i think of hawkwind it also makes me think of status quo...not that quo really sounds like hawkwind or anything, but i did get into them around the same time back in the 70's, and in fact...the first albums i bought from each of them i bought on the same day from the same used record store in new york...so...anyway...keep well...best to the family...peace always...rocky
rocky-o I have similar associations - the first three albums I ever bought were, in order, Rockin All Over The World, Made in Japan and Roadhawks. Still collecting Hawkwind studio albums, but have a long way to go - only halfway there on vinyl. Got a few CDs too of course. Most of the post 1990 albums are hard to get on vinyl.
First came across Hawkwind when I was about 10 and my sister had the Space Ritual album. I thought what the hell is that?!! I. Came across them again through the Live '79 album and have loved them ever since. I haven't got all the albums, but your show has encouraged me to complete the collection. I wouldn't disagree with your ranking - Hall of the Mountain Grill is a properly great album. My only change would be to include the Hawklords album in my top 10 even though it's supposed to be a separate project. Saw them live earlier on this year and they were really good.
For me 1. Quark Strangeness And Charm 2. Hawklords 3.PXR5 5.Warrior On the Edge Of Time 6.Hall Of The Mountain Grill 7. Levitation 8.Do Re Mi 9. In Search Of Space 10. Sonic Attack
@@MrTrevorjc1 Most Hawk fans i know have those albums as top three and most have Quark as one and the other two vary. I'm not a big fan of Uncle Sams On Mars, The Hawklords album is seamless to me so gets it, it's close though, a great triumvirate.
My top 10 1. Warrior On The Edge Of Time 2. Doremi Fasol Latido 3. In Search Of Space 4. Hall Of The Mountain Grill 5. The Xenon Codex 6. P.X.R.5. 7. Levitation 8. Hawkwind 9. Quark, Strangeness And Charm 10. It Is The Buisness Of The Future To Be Dangerous Thanx for the video Pete
Master of the universe and chronicles of the black sword are my favourite 2, Hawkwind is my soul like Motorhead from 13 years old until my death, I love dave brock and lemmy for the music, Motorhead and Hawkwind I thank you for everything you've done for music and being part of my life
My favourite band! The top 4 I could have guessed from the start. I have a soft spot for the c1980 era. I would have included 1978's Hawklords in the list, even though they couldn't use the Hawkwind name, it was the same people. And a great album - Calvert at his best.
Love that you appreciate this band. Saw them many times in their heyday. Very special. Clapton played with Hawkwind last year. Big friends with Dave Brock.
Hi Pete. Electric Teepee is wonderful. Missus and me love Warrior on the Edge of Time. And Hall of the Mountain Grill. And Amazing Sounds Amazing Music. And...
My list would be very similar to yours, Pete, but I would rank Live Chronicles at the top and remove the studio version in my list. Huw Lloyd-Langton is on fire on this live release. As a guitarist he was hugely underrated. It's a shame, too. When you did your departed guitar heroes I wracked my brain trying to figure out who was missing that I liked so much. I'm beginning to believe this was one of those I overlooked. HLL was a perfect fit for this band--and was huge in both Chronicles releases. This is the first Hawkwind I always grab when I'm in the mood--and is the one I always recommend as a starting place for this eclectic band. To this day, I miss him in Hawkwind.
Ok I'm just going to say right from the start "Space Ritual"#1 is their BEST album of the all Live or studio !!! With the Space Prog Rockers well known for their habit of playing on Speed/Acid it is probably the only Live recordings of them that they all seemed to be as one, great Drumming, effects, singing, Lemmy especially on "Time We Left This World Today" !! His Driving Bass with some Fuzz Tone is so good ..... listen with Headphones and turn it up !! Hell even Dave Brock's Lead Solos on the album are Great !!! Lol : D ua-cam.com/video/EoslJ-Dy2Zo/v-deo.html #2, Hall of the Mountain Grill #3, Doremi Fasol Latido #4, Warrior on the Edge of Time #5, In Search of Space #6, Blood of the Earth .... A Really good and hardly heard album ? Seahawks, Green Machine, Starshine are great emotional Songs !!! .... ua-cam.com/video/P40ZYAVkRBU/v-deo.html ...... ua-cam.com/video/6TRyUhTVNhg/v-deo.html.. Enjoy
Totally agree with you on your top five. They are also my favorite studio albums, though I have them in a different order depending on my mood and time.. Sadly Chronicles was the last live tour gig I saw when life got in the way, though I did take my daughter to a Hawkwind benefit gig in Manchester's rock club 'Gillies' for her 18th birthday back in 1994. (I almost crashed into Dave Brocks taxi while leaving the gig on my motorcycle. My daughter wasn't happy.
I was glad to this video - a nice overview Hawkwind's work! I saw them in 1970 at the Glastonbury Town Hall, supported by the Pink Fairies. Saw them again, in 1980 at the Lewisham Odeon, performing the pieces from their then new Levitation album, amongst others. (Ginger Baker was awesome!) Supporting band was Blue Oyster Cult. I'm now discovering their more recent albums. It was 'Master of the Universe' from 'In Search of Space' that originally switched me on to them.
I probably first heard this band without realising who it was on things like “sight and sound in concert” or similar. They are probably the reason I’ve never needed to drop acid as the music just takes you away with headphones and a darkened room ! I couldn’t really pick a countdown but anything from the debut to warrior does it for me ! Warrior only just making the top spot by a hairs width
Thanks, That was a great over view, I'm just now deep into Space Ritual and I wanted to know more about the band and their massive catalog! And Satcia!!!
Hi. Colin from N. Ireland. My top 6 are the same as yours. The rest of them where not too far away from your choices. I've seen hawkwind on the levitation tour and got to meet Ginger Baker after the show. Being a drummer that was one of the greatest moments in my life. Love your broadcasts. Can't wait to see the Rory Gallagher one whom I have seen a few times in Belfast. Keep up the good work...... Peace, drums, guinness✌️🥁🤘🤘
That was the one gig I missed that haunts me to this day. I'd just really discovered them around that time. I've seen them many times since, including the Limelight gig. Now living near London and pick and choose my gigs, The Roundhouse gig during Desertfest 2018 with young Haz was great, all downhill since.
My list would be more or less like yours. I would add 'The Xenon Codex' and 'Alien 4'. Also, I think you mention "Paradox" from 'Hall of the Mountain Grill' being a bonus track? It's a typo on the CD remaster. "Paradox" is the last song on the original album.
Man, such a great prog-space rock band! Genuine style, lot of keyboards, and always with cool covers. I have 3 albums of them (Hall of the Mountain Grill, Live '79 and Levitation). In fact, Hall of the Mountain Grill is a real kickass album...
Seen Hawkwind a few times...one particular time in Manchester (indoors) stood right in the centre of the crowd smoking weed with some strange characters, cant believe we got away with doing this especially as the smoking in public ban had already been introduced by this time,...but nobody bothered us whatsoever..and it made for a very good gig... On the subject probably have to say 'hall of the mountain grill' is my favourite.
15. Church Of Hawkwind 14. Out and Intake 13. Palace Springs 12. Doremi Fasol Latido 11. Hall of the Mountain Grill 10. It is the Business of the Future to be Dangerous 9. Levitation 8. Choose Your Masques 7. Take Me to Your Leader 6. Warrior on the Edge of Time 5. Distant Horizons 4. Xenon Codex 3. Electric Tepee 2. Alien4 1. Live Chronicles
I had a copy of "In Search of Space" back in the seventies and between my friends and I we were, as well, sometimes listening to "In the Hall of the Mountain Grill" and "Warrior on the Edge of Time". After that they sort of dropped off my radar. I'm getting back into now and realise what I've been missing. What a shitload of great music!
I lost interest after Levitation, but their Lemmy era stuff is played regularly. My #1 album is A Space Ritual, for me its one of my top ten albums of all time. As has already been said by Lucas, its unusual for me to prefer a live album (especially 70s live albums) but this one is sensational from start to finish. Plus it features the beast Orgone Accumulator.
So many albums! lol I guess I’d start with Levitation and the early 80’s stuff then the Lemmy era. I saw them play at The State Theatre in Maine back in 2013 before I knew who they were. It was pretty interesting stuff. I’ve been meaning to get their discography for some time now and will definitely start with those aforementioned albums.
I recently discovered Space Ritual, and it is a classic and totally insane. How did I miss this one!
Space Ritual is a brilliant, brilliant album! I recorded / produced a band for virtually nil money, and the bassist (a big Hawkwind fan) gave me a vinyl copy of Space Ritual. I already knew the album from many years before, and was knocked out by this band's kind gesture.
@Anthony Lalangley 'It makes me feel greater' - definitely.
Once heard never forgotten. It was the first gig I ever went to in June 73....and still play frequently..it's unique.
It's a contender for the title of greatest live double rock album ever ... mindblowingly brilliant.
@@Syd4510 Gotta have the original vinyl with the booklet and fold out cover.
I'm not a massive Hawkwind fan but I think their album: Quark, Strangeness and Charm is a complete masterpiece, easily one of the best recordings of the 70's and in my top 20 albums of all time.
That's the spirit of the age.
Agreed, it's top 3 Hawkwinds for sure.
Quark is number 1 for me.
It's maybe a top 5 studio album of Hawkwind for me. I've been Hawkwind Meister since '75.
Have you listened to “astounding sound amazing music “ if not , give it a listen 👍
The first band I ever saw live, 1973 Leeds Space Ritual tour. I was 17, had no idea how lucky I was. Then they released the whole gig on a double album and I've been listening ever since. I've not seen a better concert, nor heard a better album in the following 47 years!
My absolute all time favourite band. Have all their studio albums and lots of live. Seen them about 10 times.
For me it's Warrior on the edge of time a masterpiece.
My heart sank a bit when the great Bob Calvert didn't get a mention. He was the best thing about Hawkwind, for me.
Oversight on my part...so many great past members
Best lyric writer in history. "Oh for the wings of any bird, other than a battery hen", sheer genius.
@@seaoftranquilityprog Bit more then an oversight mate. Bob Calvert Was Hawkwind for a while there. Shame he went beyond the outer limits and never came back
@@patkelly3966 Then do your own video "mate" 🤔
He was a genius
Also featured a South African Robert Calvert, wrote lot of their lyrics.Poet as well.
Poet, playwright, songwriter, singer....... but mainly a visionary genius.
Bob culvert was integral to the group. Awesome song writer and poet. Never forgotten.
Yes the Calvert years were great...surprisingly not mentioned
Experiencing 'Warrior On The Edge Of Time' whilst under the influence of Dr. Hofmann's elixir is a freaking incredible experience.
so is P.X.R. 5 and ELECTRIC TEPEE after
a bunch of mushys....
My favourite Hawkwind album isn't actually a Hawkwind album it's Robert Calvert's - Captain Lockheed and the Starfighters.
Indeed, Calvert was a key figure. Lucky Lief and the Longships was another interesting Calvert album.
My favourite also.
Brock was on it. And Hawkwind perform tracks from it to this day.
I agree, Vivian Stanishall helped a lot 😊
A band name Huw Lloyd-Langton took from that album, Widowmaker.
Space Ritual is my #1 overall. What a magnificent live album :D
Definitely.
Alan Davey toured with a band a few years ago and they performed the album in its entirety. Superb gig!!!
One of the Best Live albums ever !!! Captures their Live performance so well, even with the Speed/Acid they all Jelled on this one !! Lol 👍🎶
Hello!?!
Space Ritual is NOT a studio album, it's a double LIVE album. The guy is rating STUDIO albums... is that to hard for you to understand?
@@THE-HammerMan Yeah we know that, it doesn't matter it's their Best album !!
Relax it's just Y-tube Lol
Sounds like you have a few issues !!!
In Search of Space is my favorite and my amazing introduction to space rock...great job Hawkwind!!!
I waited months for this list, love hawkwind to death in all their carnations, rip lemmy and bob calvert
Hawkwind and acid went hand in hand back in prime time. Those of us who took the music seriously back then knew what the buzz of choice was for each particular band. Miss those days and those friends who have concluded their time on this earth.
For those of us still here I say Rock on to the end!!!!
Preferred weed when listening to Hawkwind.
@M. B-EE You've got to be joking.
Even on the back of the cover of the eponymous Hawkwind album, they state it's made for acid users....!
In fact, you need to hear Hawkwind on acid to really understand it.
Weeds are good too, but they just don't throw the doors near as wide open.
Captain Bob Calvert
I salute you Sir

Hall of the Mountain Grill is my favorite but I can't possibly rank them all. Like you said they have a million albums and so many of them are equally good as each other.
I saw Hawkwind on the Chronicle of the Black Sword tour, what an awesome gig! Fave albums, Chronicle, Warrior on the Edge of Time, PXR5, Quark Strangeness & Charm and Levitation.
me to, Bristol Colston Hall, last night of the tour. DRN in support, amazinng night
Psi Power is awesome, especially the live version.
Another offshoot that came out then was 'Sonic Assassins'. It was 1/2 live & 1/2 studio from memory.
Beginners should start like this:
1.) Drink some beers, smoke a cigarette or something else.
Hawkwind are one of the few bands to truly be worthy of the epithet ‘alternative’. How many bands actively set out to make their audience feel ill?!
Pete im forever indebted to you for turning me on to Hawkwind and this is the 3rd time I have watched this.
Pete, of the lesser known bands I had never listened to before coming to your channel, this is the best yet. What a great band with awesome tracks and albums galore.
Space Ritual was my gateway into this mind bending band and I gotta say it's a perfect place to start.
Hawkwind is a supremely underrated band. If it weren't for them, we wouldn't have had Motorhead, Punk, and many other things in general. They should be in the R&R hall of fame
Quite agree.
Hawkwind and Pat Troughton? You ARE the man!! 👍
Pretty sure Punk would still have happened without Hawkwind (did you ever hear the MC5 in the late 1960s?) ... they pioneered Trance 20 years in advance (e.g. Orgone Accumulator live in 1972 etc) though ...
@@stevenwilkinson1265 John Lydon was a big fan.
Even the ambient music of the last 20 years or so has its roots in Hawkwind.
And "Sword of the east is brilliant".
Also Wastelands of sleep and Heads, sure a bit of filler but a rather understated album.
My introduction with the band was the LP on Pete's t shirt. I agree with all that say that the best is Space Ritual.
The ranking of the studio works is:
Hall of the mountain grill - Warrior on the edge of time - In search of space - Levitation - Quark strangeness and charm - Doremifasolatido - Astounding sounds amazing music - The chronicle of the black sword - Hawkwind - Space bandits - Electric teepee - Xenon codecs. But I really like everything they put out. The Hawklords project is very good, and so are the Robert Calvert solo works that have a lot of Hawkwind members in them
I'd love to see you give Zappa the same treatment. It'd be a huge task to do them all but I'd like to see your favorites!
Studio albums:
1. Warrior on the edge of time
2. Hall of the mountain grill
3. In search of space
4. Doremi fasol latido
5. Quark Strangeness and Charm
6. Levitation
7. Hawklords/ 25 years on

12. The Chronicle of the black sword
13. Electric Tepee
14. Sonic attack
15. Space bandits
Live albums:
1. Space Ritual
2. Stonehenge- This is Hawkwind, Do not panic
3. Live Chronicles
4. Live '79
Love this band! Especially the weird late 70s stuff when Calvert took the band in a more new wave direction (Quark, etc.)
Turn off all the lights, lay in bed with the headphones, and play the 15 minute “You Shouldn’t Do That” and prepare to have your mind blown!
The song that really changed it for me. Never been the same since, happily
Hi Pete, are you gonna do the moody blues ranking? Would love to see your picks. 👍
Could you see your way clear to ranking the albums of The 'Sensational' Alex Harvey Band ?

Being a Hawkwind fan since 1973, and having done presentations on their music, (I have pretty much all of it), I was very pleasantly surprised to see you had the same picks for #1 and #2 that i have. Well done.
Until about six months ago I think that I owned their whole catalog, but I needed to do some weeding and they were on the list. I'm just going to rank the ones I actually own now.

3) X In Search Of Space
2) Warrior On The Edge Of Time
1) Hall Of The Mountain Grill

My top 5:
1. Levitation
2. Quark
3. Warrior
4. Hall of the Mountain Grill
5. In Sesrch of Space
1. Levitation
2. Warrior On The Edge
3. Chronicles (Live one better!)
4. Sonic Attack
5. Doremi Fasol Latido
6. Choose Your Masques
7. Hall of the Mountain Grill
8. Hawkwind
9. Electric Teepee
10. Space Bandits
11. PXR5
12. In Search of Space
13. Church of Hawkwind
14. Quark
15. Astounding Sounds
If I'd ranked all their albums, I'd put Live '79 #2, Live Chronicles #3, Space Ritual #7, Xenon Codex #9. Cheers!
I prefer their seventies stuff. That of the "Lemmy Period " in particular.

The Hawks was the first band I ever saw, on Sunday, February 9th
1975 at Hammersmith Odeon. Lemmy and Stacia were in the group
at the time. They were great.
Fashions come and go, but the Hawks have remained timeless.
From 1971 - 75, they couldn't put a foot wrong.
Born To Go!
My only knowledge of Hawkwind comes from Vivian's tshirt on the Young Ones tv show from the early 80s. I'll have to check them out.
Warrior On The Edge Of Time would be my #1 choice. I love this album and what a killer album cover!
killerdude35 - I agree 100% re: Warrior their best LP
The Hawks and Sabbath were the first bands i was drawn too... still love them today....a pleasure to watch this Pete.....Hey, Ginger Baker tried to steal Hawkwind away from Brock...
B.S. is my all time favorite band. Hawkwind is my fourth favorite out of thousands!
Yea I'll agree HOMG rules! Amazing studio album
great video pete...every time i think of hawkwind it also makes me think of status quo...not that quo really sounds like hawkwind or anything, but i did get into them around the same time back in the 70's, and in fact...the first albums i bought from each of them i bought on the same day from the same used record store in new york...so...anyway...keep well...best to the family...peace always...rocky
rocky-o I have similar associations - the first three albums I ever bought were, in order, Rockin All Over The World, Made in Japan and Roadhawks.
Hawkwind is definitely in my top 10 favorite bands of all time. Thanks for doing it and...

AWESOME! Been patiently waiting for this one. In Search of space is my fave!
Thank you for your ranking of Hawkwind!! I love the band, Hawkwind!! I have Hawkwind, 1977-1986, CD!! 🎤🎸🎵🥁
Quark Strangeness and Charm should have been in the top 4 at least amazing Calvert lyrics, drumming and general atmosphere, Calvert was a genius.
Yeah, not sure how Quark cant crack a top 15 list. Probably their strongest writing, thanks to Calvert. I cant abide....
Great vid man. Keep up the good work 👍
Love that you appreciate this band.
Saw them many times in their heyday. Very special.
Clapton played with Hawkwind last year.
Big friends with Dave Brock.
Yeah, that was a gig to remember. Keep the faith!.
They had a killer line-up in the mid '70s. King is a beast, too bad he retired so early...
Also, their 2019 album is so good!!!
Simon King, the greatest rock drummer no one has ever heard of.
being old has it's advantages i saw them with lemmy and stacia ( the topless dancer) at the tower theater in upper darby pa.
You don't get many of them to the pound.
You lucky, lucky sod.Saw the BBC 4 documentary and was immediately impressed with Stacia.
Lol : D

Hawkwind is my fourth favorite band of all time!
One of my all time favourite bands... Been listening to hawklords ( hawkwind ) song psi power loads lately. What a great track that is.
Do you like Ozric Tentacles? Would be good to see a ranking.
OH,THANK YOU FOR THIS ONE!! Hawkwind-space rock legends!!!!
Closing in on 20 studio albums of theirs. I will own all of them someday. There's 30 of them.
I have 19.
