Great to hear someone from the US appreciating what I think is a quintessentially British band. As a fan I cannot disagree with any of your comments especially your praise of one of the best live albums ever. If any Hawkwind fan under the age of sixty five who does not have access to the use of a time machine then to see that album performed live must surely be the holly grail. I am over sixty five and I was fortunate to see that legendary concert twice, an experience almost beyond description let me tell you. Cheers from a brother Hawkwind fan.
Bless you for promoting Hawkwind. They have always been about more than the sum of the parts. Id love to see an interview with Dave and Nik where they are encouraged to discuss each album and what the process of crafting the songs was. Also their festival / touring and peace convoy experiences. I bet there's some incredible stories. I had the luck to meet Huwie and Marion and also Richard Chadwick and they are really lovely folk. They have seemed like an edgy band at times. They do have that punk, "Right, w ' re gonna make a massive space rock noise here and now!" sort of mentality, to this day. But, it's not good to forget that there are some really lovely characters and eccentrics that gravitate to Hawkwind and it's a real pleasure to catch up with them ever so often and get your cozmiq boogie woogie on!
Nice job! I am a HUGE Hawkwind fan. I was actually listening to Hall Of The Mountain Grill when I saw this. Hall is the album I start with when introducing people to Hawkwind. That and Levitation are my two favorites. PXR5 would be my least favorite seventies album. And I completely agree that the debut and Astounding Sounds would be albums to listen to after hearing the core albums. My introduction to Hawkwind was Warrior.
As an "old" Hawkwind fan, I think your review is spot on. Saw them in 1974 with Lemmy. 3rd row, dead center, tripping my brains out on Purple Haze. 'Nuff Said.
Jack of Shadows off of PXR5 is an all time favorite...guitar and base work is phenomenal! Get your head right...slip on the headphones and enjoy the trip!
Great video mate. Totally agree on listening to Space Ritual first ,i did and it scared the crap out of me when they started the Dalek prayers . anyway love the band.
A really nice guide, thanks. The 70s albums are great. Super packaging too. My favourite of the later albums is Electric Tepee. It's a really good one.
I was introduced to Hawkwind through their "Hall of the Mountain Grill" album. My love of the band was cemented with "Space Ritual." A truly great band, and one of my faves.
@@IronOrchid-HQ Oh, yes. Captain Lockheed. An under-rated album with killer tunes, especially The Aerospaceage Inferno, and a bit of comedy from Viv Stanshall of The Bonzo Dog Band. A real gem.
First band I ever saw, I was 14, on the "Quark, Strangeness and Charm" tour. They were great, Calvert was a lunatic, shredding the American flag with a scimitar during "Hassan i Sabah".
I saw him waving the flag about on the next tour - the Hawklords tour, first time I saw them. Don't think the flag suffered any, but he was a great front man. One of the best. I even grabbed the Mike from him and yelled Brainstorm at the appropriate moment 😂😂😎
Second band I ever saw (Budgie was the first) on the same tour as you. Bob Calvert was unique. I saw him later when they were Hawklords. One of a kind that man.
First ever gig. glasgow apollo 1975 (although I think I've since been told it was 1974, but it was around May/June, just after the album release, Warrior at the Edge tour. Seats C2 and C3. Remoulded my brain. Had been listening to them for years, but live, back then , was a total trip.
Thank you so much for this video and your enthusiasm for the band. As a long time Hawkwind fan this is a brilliant run through of their finest period of work. When I first got into Hawkwind in my teens I bought their first LP as a picture disc and found it pretty impenetrable even though I loved In Search of Space already. Now it is one of my favourites. Hawkwind, In Search of Space, Doremi, Space Ritual, Hall of the Mountain Grill and Warrior at the Edge of Time are all absolutely essential. I really rate Astounding Sounds out of the Calvert/Charisma era records. Reefer Madness and Steppenwolf are incredible tracks. Agree with you on PXR5 though. After Levitation my only must-have is 1984's live This is Hawkwind Do Not Panic but I do have a soft spot for Chronicle of the Black Sword due to teenage readings of Moorcock.
Very interesting. Fantastic band and still are.despite the squabbling I know it's not a hawkwind album but by jings I wished I still had greasy truckers album still .loved that .
Well done, excellent video and great discription. As an old Hawkfan I wish you a long life and as much happiness you can have. Best wishes from England, They were amazing live on their 50 th ! 🚀🛸🌌👨🚀👾
Roadhawks was a great live album which took material from the first 5 albums. Released in 1976. Enjoyed your guide thanks. I was never really sure what order they came in as Roadhawks was my first.
Start at in search of space. Doremi space ritual which really is the doremi live tour. And feature the great lemmy who joined just before doremi his driving bass is excellent. And lord of light is a prime example. Recommend all albums up to Astounding sounds where Dave brock gave everyone a in put. Bob calvert help write or help write some of the early songs. But from 76 was more prominent and did write lots of there best songs all with the captain Dave Brock.. Love all the album. The 70s was there golden age. Peace..
The album that got me hooked was Quark, Strangeness and Charm. not looked back since, love all of their recordings up to the mid to late nineties. After that well each to their own I guess, still go to see them live at least once a year but I long for the classic Hawkwind.
Great job naz - thoroughly enjoyed your look at hawkwinds early records - i actually love astounding sounds - steppenwolf has a gr8 electronic groove to it - city of lagoons is gr8 - kerbcrawler etc - i assume you have live 79 its a gr8 mini live album - motorway city is amazin onit.- hawkwinds tribute to autobahn - dave brock seen hawkwind as krautrock
PXR5 was actually recorded late 77/early 78, a while before the Hawklords album but not released till after it. I love the late 70's albums juat as much, Quark is my fave HW album and also the second I heard - the first was Choose Your Masques and I also love the 3 early 80's albums. Another recommendation for a later album is Xenon Codex. Great video Nazz, btw the chugga chugga sound is called blanga!
Thanks for great, informative video. These guys have been recommended to me before but I didn't know anything about them. Now I at least have a place to start.
Man, i love Hawkwind. I even got to play a show with them in 07. Yes, i was in a space punk band that was Hawkwind adjacent. I love the 70s stuff. Levitation is one of my favorite albums. I actually really love the more electronic type material in the 80s. The 90s had some really interesting material too. These days, i feel like Brock and co have really had their fire reignited. Out of the 70s though, Space Ritual can never been praised enough. If there were a definition of "lightening in a bottle" for a live album then that would be the album listed.
First of all great Frampton Tee! I love it! Speaking of “live” albums that one is up there for me Thanks for doing this video I appreciate it as someone who is generally new to the mighty Hawkwind I have broken the ice by picking up Hall of the Mountain Grill (which I love) but yeah this has been super informative and I will take your advice for sure Love your channel and you have a superb collection! Peace ☮️ Cosmic Brian
Space Ritual Live is a superb album. Definitely the place to start listening to Hawkwind. I agree with much of what you say. Astounding Sounds has some Bowie-esque material on it but also Steppenwolf which is more like classic Hawkwind. In the 80s, Choose Your Masques was good but you have to like the synth sound they were doing. Same with Church of Hawkwind. Sonic Attack has Angels of Death, which is a live favourite. Live 79 is another live album worth checking out.
Great idea for a vid and good recommendations, too! I also started with The Space Ritual, and it's hard to argue that a prospective hawkfan should begin anywhere else. However, pound-for-pound, I'd have to say Warrior on the Edge of Time and Quark, Strangeness and Charm are the twin jewels in the Hawkwind crown. By the way, Quark was Robert Christgau's favorite Hawkwind album.
Awesome video! I will be starting with Levitation. Based on what I’ve heard it is a pretty good album. Then of course I’ll pursue the 74’ and 75’ albums. You should mention the 1981-present day era there’s definitely some hidden gems in there that I’ve heard bits and pieces of.
I am I die hard Hawkfan and as you even said yourself it was unlikely that I was going to agree with everything! However nice job well done. You've had to squeeze a lot into 20 odd minutes. I am surprised that 'In Search of Space' didn't get a mention though, but then again technically it's a live album and you would of had to go into the 'Log Book' and all that! Anyway great overview and if you've inspired one more person to listen to Hawkwind then you've succeeded!

Nazz nomad, thanks for doing this. I definitely think this is the best period of Hawkwind, but of course I think there's quite a few Hawkwind albums post 1980 that were outstanding for me, particularly Electric Teepee and It's the Business if the future to be dangerous. It seems I rate the Robert Calvert 1976-1979 period a little more than you, but all good of course. I just think Calvert's amazing poetic contributions are so unique and outstanding. Yes I think Space Ritual is the finest live album by anyone, it just flows superbly from electronics to poetry to heavy riffing to extended bass lines from Lemmy, etc, an amazing whole piece of art
yes great lyrics but the music is very lite new wave and generic , spirit of the age is only 2 chords . i can just about get a double album from all those Calvert albums . like you i love the 80's 90's stuff and the recent stuff ie last 10 yrs is mostly very good imho
Pretty good review. I think the early UA stuff is almost like 2 different bands when compared to the Charisma stuff but both bands were excellent. I love both periods. I have a theory though that the life of the band was snuffed out at around the time of Levitation and that album would not be part of the review for me - pedantically I always consider it 69 -79. I gave up at Levitation as the spirit of the band died around the time that Dave got full control. I am not familiar with all their stuff since but have dipped in from time to time but they have never recovered that early vibe. Arguable some of Nik's stuff has had more of the HW spirit particularly the Space Ritual album.
Hey this is my first comment on any video lol. But just had to say I really enjoy watching your videos...you have an extensive knowledge of music and I almost always coming away with a new band to explore. So thanks :) Also on a side note....I have noticed you rock a cool band shirt each time I watch. How many do you own? And are any from when you were younger? Have a rad day 😎
Hi, I have about 300 band shirts my wife estimates. A lot are from my youth but those do not fit all the time. Most now are from shows recently or ones you buy at stores. Thanks very much for the kind words, really appreciate it :)
@@nazznomad impressive! I don't have anywhere near that many...maybe one day haha. In Australia we have "ausmusic month" and part of that is a day dedicated to wearing band tees. It is held in the month of November so very soon. A good excuse to wear one :)
I saw them several times in the eighties. Last time was 2009 when it seemed to be just a free form jam which didn't really resemble any of the the actual songs. Unless you were stoned it was very dull, you just hoped they'd actually play a song that was familiar beyond the first 2 chords.
It's 'Levitation' and 'Sonic Attack' that got me hooked. The older albums never grew on me even though there are some songs on them I like. My top 5 albums would be 'Levitation' (1980), 'Electric Tepee' (1992), 'The Xeon Codex' (1988), 'Space Bandits' (1990) and 'Sonic Attack' (1982).
Just get Space Ritual !!! All the songs are great and much better than the studio versions !! Everyone is playing great, Lemmy is fantastic and even Dave Brock is Soloing great on many songs !!! Lol : D
Saw hawks 73 74 broke my heart when lemmy left, that was the end .now it,s dave brock and his young generation band, for god,s sake sum one stop him ,use the mentle healt act.
I do believe that album 2 is called X in search of space. Just saying, not wishing to be pedantic. Blessings. In my view, the first 5 albums represent the only real hawkwind. The next 4 albums were basically a 4 piece band using the name but I like those albums. Then came Levitation, a 1 trip pony regarding line up. After that everything becomes fragmented and Brock becomes the legal owner of the name blah blah blah. They definitely have had many good moments since then but honestly, they are in my opinion "the Dave Brock band" operating under the banner . Having said that. Hawkwind is a concept, an interdimentional space ship which members step on & off. So in theory it should live forever !
Hey David good seein ya☕️👋🏻, I’m familiar w the band but I’m curious to hear your thoughts.......so thank you for showing and discussing this group/band....have a good rest of week.....just gonna enjoy.....😎🎶Lisa I like this kind of video, hope you do more David....Parsons maybe? Cheers
I'm about to crucify you... @7:16 you said the music playing in the background was from the Space Ritual album when in fact is is 'You shouldn't do that' from In Search of Space.

Everyone is playing great, Lemmy is fantastic and even Dave Brock is Soloing great on many songs !!! Lol : D
Dave said in an interview that Astounding Sounds Amazing Music was his least favorite of all the albums, he called it "too artsy fartsy"
Saw hawks 73 74 broke my heart when lemmy left, that was the end
.now it,s dave brock and his young generation band, for god,s sake sum one stop him ,use the mentle healt act.
So in theory it should live forever !
good choice for a video
Hey David good seein ya☕️👋🏻, I’m familiar w the band but I’m curious to hear your thoughts.......so thank you for showing and discussing this group/band....have a good rest of week.....just gonna enjoy.....😎🎶Lisa
I like this kind of video, hope you do more David....Parsons maybe? Cheers
Space ritual tour liverpool UK got a poster signed by Stacia too 👍
I'm about to crucify you... @7:16 you said the music playing in the background was from the Space Ritual album when in fact is is 'You shouldn't do that' from In Search of Space.
Space Ritual was the one album (and tour) that got me hooked on Hawkwind but IMO not the best live album ever
Simon house on violin!!!
Stereo headphones are best and if you haven't got that, then play loud with your stoner mates
How can you say that about astounding and by the was you said s r was playing in the background and it wasn't. mmm
Jane Kwiatkowski id have to listen back and see what I was playing or what I meant. I do make mistakes as I don’t edit, so mistakes stay in
Live Seventy Nine... its all you need!
Wrong ....Space Ritual is THE greatest live album of all time.
Its the musical scale , doh ,Ray ,me, fah, so ,lah, tee doh!! Dummy!
