Hahaaa from the depth of my love for Phil Lynott. He is for me what Elvis is for others. A couple of times per year i bring home at least one case of beer and my wife says; here we go again! Then it is a 15 hour remembering. Love from Sweden.
I was a Puerto Rican from the South Bronx in the seventies listening to everything I Could find from Lizzy. Most underrated rock band ever. My favorite band of all time.
The thing that sets Lizzy apart from all the other bands of that ilk, was the fact that Phil could write a barn burner one minute, then turn around and write songs that could bring a statue to tears. What an amazing band, my favorite band of all time as well. Nice job gents.
Lynnot and new band produced gold right up until the end... On TAL you also got great tracks like Cold Sweat, The Holy War and Thunder and Lightning. In my opinion, Thin Lizzy didn't produce a crap album or a crap song. It was either good or superb.
I'll be perfectly honest. Except for the 2-4 standard radio hits, I hadn't really been into Lizzy that much. After seeing this video and hearing you dudes talk so highly of the band I couldn't resist going out and picking up a few of their CD'S and I will tell you, I am MAJORLY hooked!! Great friggin band and all I can say is better late than never!
Never too late friend Been into lizzy since the mid seventies They done too many great albums and were overlooked in there time. Luckily here in London we had probably more radio play of their tracks than in the USA
and "The Boys are Back in Town". It wasn't until I searched out their albums, that I realized how great they were. Phil Lynott was like no one else, unbelievable talent and charisma.
Hey guys can't believe you mentioned all the guitarists and nothing about Downey , such an under rated and under stated drummer, so so smooth. Great review and greetings from Ireland 🇮🇪
THANK YOU PETE & MR.JONES! I’ve been a listener of great music for over 45 years and have only owned JAILBREAK ( great album ) and never, NEVER thought of getting any of their other albums??! Pete! Nightlife, that album kick started the whole twin lead moment for Thin Lizzy. Plus at that time they were very smooth and soulful with some very good guitar work, a combination we won't see again until Bad Reputation and Black Rose
Great video, its great food for thought. It made me think of mine. Being from Dublin, I grew up on Lizzy. Obviously everyone's album favorites are different. I have Lizzy tattoos, I was even lucky enough to play the 4th of January anniversary show and meet some of my all time heroes. Was the most surreal times of my life!!!! All of Lizzy albums stand up by themselves. That's what makes them so unique. They can fit easily into so many genres. Keep up the great work guys!!!!!

I miss Lizzy a lot. Saw them 5 or 6 times back in the day with Robbo, Scott and Gary Moore. My favourite album is 'Black Rose' probably because I'm a big Gary Moore fan, but my favourite track is Emerald.
Best album is Black Rose I love Fighting I love Jail Break I love the self titled album I love Bad Reputation but Black Rose is all of the elements that made Lizzy a great band story telling great riffs amazing vocals and bass parts sick drumming and Phill telling his stories and showing his vunerability and pain by far the best !!
Great video ... I felt so at home watching this being an Irish Lizzy fan since 81...I honestly couldn’t pick a best ...oh ok ... today it’s Chinatown... love the twin guitars of snowy and Scott I felt snowy brought a real depth to Lizzy a bit of maturity...which probably made Thunder and lightning so radical because John Sykes came along and tore it up shredding like a madman with a real edge...thanks guys I thought I was one of the only ones who loved Lizzy 👍🏻👍🏻🍺
This song has a long Irish tradition and Metallica should have left this alone. The Thin Lizzy version is great. Some songs are meant to be left alone unless you thoroughly understand the root and purpose of the original.
I’m not a huge Metallica fan anyway. Don’t get me wrong, there are a few songs I like such as: One, Fade To Black, Welcome Home (Sanitarium), Master of Puppets, Creeping Death.. that’s about it for me. Those first 4 songs, I played the shit out of them back in high school during the mid 2000s lol
Okay love the Lizzy passion guys, but I differ quite a bit. Maybe because what got me into Lizzy was Philip Lynott, his words and imagery they invoke are indelibly I printed on me. You cannot explain the effect he had on me when I first heard that voice and saw the charisma that just poured out of him. He was a star! So as the years have gone by the softer more poetic side of the man has come to the fore. As you can imagine those early albums rate higher with me nowadays. Here goes Thunder & Lightning - I played this to death when it first came out and got to see them on the final tour. Now though; apart from The Sun Goes Down, I cannot listen to this album without feeling sad, sad it was their last and that the songs just don’t stack up against any other Lizzy album. To me it doesn’t sound like Lizzy at all...Sorry! Chinatown - I like a lot of this and as with all their albums I played them to death, however there is too much filler on this for me. Renegade - saw them on this tour as well, love the title track and also Fats is a top tune, but again not as strong as it could’ve been, shows sign of fatigue and the production is not great. Thin Lizzy - This is where it gets tough, I love the imagery here, but it does sound like a debut, a little unsure of direction. But here is where Phil the poet starts to shine Shades of a Blue Orphanage - again like the first album a little unsure of itself but getting better I think Nightlife - lots to love here, Gary Moore’s solo on Still In Love With You is very classy, and the songwriting goes up a notch. Johnny the Fox - love most of this but the last track lets the side down, Boogie Woogie Dance is one of the worst filler tracks of all time. Black Rose - this was the album in the summer of ‘79, however as much as I love it, 2 tracks let it down, Sarah and S&M, not good! With Love and the title track hark back to those early days but with more swagger. Jailbreak - iconic album, put them on the map and I love every track Fighting - its an album I go back to time and again, wonderful songwriting but not quite as good as the next one... Bad Reputation - I think this where Philip’s songwriting really peaked, every song is a winner. Vagabonds of the Western World - for me this is just a classic Lynott album, so poetic, romantic but with substance. Eric Bell’s playing is superb too. Absolutely love this album. They will always be my go to band and I love all the albums...apart from T&L, if I had to pick a favourite era it would be those early years when Phil was learning his songwriting. For me he was a poet first, just wish he had continued in that way. RIP
Vagabonds is my favorite Lizzy album because Eric Bell's guitar playing really shines here... and the music is so diverse. Black Boys on the Corner - easily my favorite Lizzy song
loved this video....like you guys, I'm a lizzy nut, and it's so cool watching you guys go over this list....reminds me of me and my buddies sitting around discussing our favorite albums from favorite bands. thanks for posting.
I'm glad I discovered your channel: it's not that easy to find people who still talk about Thin Lizzy and old bands anymore. I actually love everything they wrote, but Genocide has a soft spot in my heart. Such a criminally underrated band. Btw, last summer I saw Black Star Riders live: they were great!
I'm always surprised that Chinatown is never rated that high by music journalists and very low in this list by Butch and Pete. My favourite Lizzy album by some distance, absolutely love it, a masterpiece IMO.
This is one of my favorite shows you’ve done simply because I am a big Lizzy fan. Both of you had a lot of great points and the songs you mentioned were some of my favs over the years. Great stuff...
I am a Music Nut Bag Junkie my whole life and still to this day find so much that I have not had the time to delve into. Thin Lizzy is one for me personally. While listening to this episode, I had to pause and go listen to the audio streams of certain songs that you all talked about. I always knew that Thin Lizzy had something special about them but did not personally put the time in to research. Now I admit...I am a big big fan of theirs. Friggan Heavy, Classic, Folk, just Badass band. Love it Sea of Tranquility! There are so many Thin Lizzy songs that could be future Space Force and Sci Fi battle scenes productions. Amazing music from somewhat an under appreciated band compared to the mainstream that is going sour these days for sure.
I loved hearing your reactions and reviews here. Im Irish, and Thin Lizzy are revered and respected so much here. Theres a classic statue of Phillo himself proudly outside a major rock bar in Dublin that attracts admirers from everywhere. Every rock bar play Lizzy all the time still and anyone into rock music here is proud of theem. I tink Thunder and Lightning is my favourite - The sun goes Down is a wonderful song. I remember seeing Metallica in Dublin , in 1999. The "Garage Inc" tour. The whole place was roaring for "Whisky" inbetween ever song! Ill never forget Metallica sitting down on the drum riser- nearing the gigs end. The chants for "Whisky" could have taken the roof off, and Hetfield stood up, addressed the crowd and told us that one of his favorite performers was "from this area". The whole place went utterly nuts. Then, just before they finally launched into Whiskey- Eric Bell arrived on stage, and rocked out the song with them. You can hear that performance on youtube , well worth a listen! Go raibh maith agat (thank you) for this video!
Johnny the Fox!!! What a great record!!!! Butch, I have been doing the same thing for years(turning folks on to TL) Such great lyrics. He had such a way of taking an ordinary idea and saying it in such a cool way!!!
@MajasDad; Live and dangerous is, according to Tony Visconti, more studio than live. It's notorious in the rock world for being the proverbial "touched up in the studio" live album.
@@grimtraveller7923 Well, Tony Visconti is an amazing genius, and if he said that, it definitely must be true :) Whether technically live or not (you can't deny huge chunks of the tracks and the general feel are live), the album is a masterpiece. And the fact that these passionate dudes barely mentioned Live and Dangerous (but they did indeed mention it, in all fairness) MUST have to do with it not normally being listed as a studio album. But then again, total respect for their choices, and everyone's entitled to their opinion. Cheers!
12. Shades of Blue Orphanage 11. Thin Lizzy 10. Vagabonds of the Western World 9. Night life 8. Thunder and lightning 7. Fighting 6. Chinatown 5. Renegade 4. Black Rose 3. Bad Reputation 2. Jailbreak 1. Johnny the Fox Thanks for this great episode of Best to worst of…It has been difficult to choose because that is a great discography of one of the greatest rock bands ever. Thin Lizzy are on my TOP 5 favourite bands. I want to ask to Pete or someone if it was Thin Lizzy or Wishbone Así the first band to introduce 'the twin guitar sound' that influenced Priest and above all Maiden. Thanks!
Best straight-ahead live rock band I've ever seen - had the privilege of seeing them at least twice in Germany back in the 70's (once w/ Robin Trower)...
I never thought I would see Thin Lizzy fans as into them as me. Thank you guys for doing this. By the way, Johnny The Fox was my first Lizzy album and still my favorite.
Hasslein Curve I mean... It’s a great album. Like exceptionally great! But it’s not my favourite. But it’s up there. But I have a soft spot for Chinatown, so who the fuck am I to spout opinions 😅 I think my fav atm is Bad Reputation. It’s just f**king great.
havent heard the whole two first albums so here we go 1) Bad Reputation 2) Jailbreak 3) Vagabonds 4)Black Rose 5) Fighting 6)Johnny 7) NIghtlife 8) Chinatown 9) Renegade 10)Thunder and Lighting but all from brilliant to good albums nonetheless!
Being irish I'm so proud of lizzy. I went to see slash and myles Kennedy a few yrs ago in a theatre in dublin and to my surprise in the vip box over my head phils mother rip was there waving down at all us rock fans. And the night before which I wasn't at charlie sheen was there and introduced slash. That's on UA-cam.
So this show triggered me to go on a thin lizzy LP marathon and damm - so tough to find weak albums. That 6 album streak from Nightlife - Black Rose was crazy good. All great in their own way.
Jailbreak to me is still the GOAT. The way each song relates to basically the same subject and every song is great. There is a definite theme that runs through the album, it is not just a miss match of songs more like a book with different chapters.
Really, a theme?? Dude your some kind of genius!! At the special needs school maybe!! Why don't you rethink posting comments, as is all you are doing is making yourself look like a freaking moron imbecillic half-wit dufus
Cory Britton thanks for the highly intellectual comment, it is good to see the Internet can raise some interesting dialogue. Your use of the English language is second to none, and your discription of a person you have never met is very colourful. My advice is to close the curtains, turn out the lights and have a lay down and relax, it is a person opinion that has no effect on you what so ever. Chill out man.
Yeah I agree bought this when it came out and compared to other albums at the time it definitely stood out, lovely fold out sleeve and artwork and excellent music, probably my favourite still too.
Not mention how badass the album cover is. Daamn I think thin lizzy has averedgly the Best album covers on their albums. Like every one of them are cool looking.
Grew up in the late 70s-early 80s. Completely missed Thin Lizzy. thought I knew rock and roll. Sea of Tranquility turned me on to them. Great freaking band. Thanks so much for the heads up.
Just subscribed to your channel a few days ago on the strength of your other stuff but this in particular is so good. I'm originally from Phillo's home town of Dublin so a little biased but so good to see Lizzy fans from the US and still flying the flag. Lizzy could/should have been way bigger than they were. Ahead of their time and life style choices messed things up but the quality of their music speaks for itself. Thanks for championing them.
Thats the power of Lizzys music. Any given day the top 6 albums will change. They're all superb. Phil Lynott was unique. And Lizzy was a totally unique band. Great show, guys!
Great discussion! Brought back a lot of memories discovering Thin Lizzy one of my favorite band, high top ten if not top. Life live all time favorite live album. Wish there was video footage of all the Guitarists ( Scott Gorham, John Sykes, Snowy White, Gary Moore, Eric Bell und Brian Robertson) playing solo simultaneously!!! Epic!
It`s good for my soul to se other people being as passionate about Lizzy as I am.
THIN LIZZY Is great!! I'm with you!!!
Agreed!!!! Here too!!!!

Astonishing epic song. The rithym, the guitar solo is amazing. A perfect song. "Thunder & Lighting probably their best album, and was the last.

Thunder and Lightning is my favorite Lizzy album. Cold Sweat just hits you like a truck when you listen to it.
It’s very metal. It’s very strange. And crazy awesome. Thunder and lightning (the song) makes me want to break stuff! In a good way 😄
And yet the band ended after this album, such a shame, looks like they were just getting strong and ready for world domination....
Yeah cold sweat hits hard
Totally agree, it's a total masterpiece.
Its my favorit lizzy record to sooo fucking awsooommee 🤘💀😈💀🤘
The song "Sitamoia" never gets a mention and that's a stormer with Gary Moore on guitar
Robbo & Scott - the only Gary Moore guitar song on Nightlife is Still In Love With You.
The celtic break in the middle is chills inducing.
Sitamoia wasn't Eric Bell on guitar? It's an older TL tune.

This song has a long Irish tradition and Metallica should have left this alone. The Thin Lizzy version is great. Some songs are meant to be left alone unless you thoroughly understand the root and purpose of the original.
Sean Swinton Nah, it’s their own thing. Doesn’t detract from the original at all.
I had to play Metallica version with a cover band. I couldn't stand it.
Here goes
Thunder & Lightning - I played this to death when it first came out and got to see them on the final tour.
But here is where Phil the poet starts to shine
Shades of a Blue Orphanage - again like the first album a little unsure of itself but getting better I think
Nightlife - lots to love here, Gary Moore’s solo on Still In Love With You is very classy, and the songwriting goes up a notch.
Jailbreak - iconic album, put them on the map and I love every track
Fighting - its an album I go back to time and again, wonderful songwriting but not quite as good as the next one...
RIP
great comment and obviously from the heart, love vagabonds too and bad reputation my favorites along with jailbreak
Vagabonds is my favorite Lizzy album because Eric Bell's guitar playing really shines here... and the music is so diverse. Black Boys on the Corner - easily my favorite Lizzy song
Vagabonds of the western world is my favourite Lizzy album
Dam vagabonds so underrated
Thin Lizzy, Winterland, San Francisco, Ca. January 1978, followed by Gary Moore line-up on the Black Rose Tour. I was there. J.
loved this video....like you guys, I'm a lizzy nut, and it's so cool watching you guys go over this list....reminds me of me and my buddies sitting around discussing our favorite albums from favorite bands. thanks for posting.
Great show - inspired me to dive into Lizzy again.
CIRCU5., same
Always good to immerse in Lizzy.
Hope your own Circu5 plans coming along mate, live and studio. Cheers.
Same here.. Also Renegade
Another brilliant show by Pete and Butch.More please! (Pantera and so on...)
Honesty is no excuse is a brilliant track. It's Brian Downey's favorite song from that album and it's the best song on that album. Full stop
This is one of my favorite shows you’ve done simply because I am a big Lizzy fan. Both of you had a lot of great points and the songs you mentioned were some of my favs over the years. Great stuff...
Best live rock albums ever made: Live and Dangerous and Made in Japan.. My two favourite bands are Thin Lizzy and RUSH, seen them both in Sweden
UFO strangers in the night and Saxon Eagle has Landed! ranks up their in top 10 live albums.
The trio of Fighting, Jailbreak and Johnny The Fox is my favourite can't choose between them.
& Bad Reputation
Freedom Song!!!! One of my all time favs!!!!!
Great song!!!
With Special thanks to you Pete... Thin Lizzy is becoming a favorite band of mine!
You didn't give Chinatown enough love imo Pete. Almost all the songs on the album are KILLER.
Dan Maler Chinatown is definitively underrated!
Agreed! Chinatown, Sugar Blues
.. Killer tunes.....
I agree. my fav Lizzy album.
Perfect cover, perfect sound, perfect songs means perfect album!
Thin Lizzy released a compilation album in 1976 called Remembering Part 1. It was recorded between 1971 - 74
Fighting will always have a special place...... Such an underrated classic.
Yes, only great Songs
That is my personal favorite album by Lizzy at the moment.
Johnny the Fox!!! What a great record!!!! Butch, I have been doing the same thing for years(turning folks on to TL) Such great lyrics. He had such a way of taking an ordinary idea and saying it in such a cool way!!!
"For those who love to live" is for sure one of my ten favourite songs ever! Thin Lizzy forever!!!
Fighting is full of first-rate material.
I am a Jazz musician and I love Thin Lizzy, they are great, a real individual, original band, totally underrated.
I know it's not a studio album, but if were to get stranded on a desert island with one Lizzy album, it would definitely be Live and Dangerous.
Good call dude. I'm with you on that one.
@MajasDad;
Live and dangerous is, according to Tony Visconti, more studio than live.
Cheers!
12. Shades of Blue Orphanage

Thanks for this great episode of Best to worst of…It has been difficult to choose because that is a great discography of one of the greatest rock bands ever. Thin Lizzy are on my TOP 5 favourite bands.
I want to ask to Pete or someone if it was Thin Lizzy or Wishbone Así the first band to introduce 'the twin guitar sound' that influenced Priest and above all Maiden. Thanks!
I need that Live and Dangerous t shirt.
We all need it
Best straight-ahead live rock band I've ever seen - had the privilege of seeing them at least twice in Germany back in the 70's (once w/ Robin Trower)...
I love Renegade too, great atmosphere on that one
Renegade my favorite
♥️♥️♥️
Great lists guys. Now i've got to jam to some Lizzy.
Vagabonds Of The Western World is one of my favorite album of all time.
I never thought I would see Thin Lizzy fans as into them as me. Thank you guys for doing this. By the way, Johnny The Fox was my first Lizzy album and still my favorite.
Great to hear the enthusiasm, its infectious!!! Hope ye have discovered Rory Gallagher.
.
This is a good video. Wish there were more people around me who'd enjoy a good ol' Lizzy conversation.
"Warrior", "Jailbreak", "Emerald", "Boys are Back", "Cowboy Song", "Angel from the Coast", & "Fight or Fall"....'nuff said...
Listenin to this on Saturday morning .... will be listenin to my Thin Lizzy albums in the afternoon, thank you so much for such a good review
havent heard the whole two first albums so here we go 1) Bad Reputation 2) Jailbreak 3) Vagabonds 4)Black Rose 5) Fighting 6)Johnny 7) NIghtlife 8) Chinatown 9) Renegade 10)Thunder and Lighting but all from brilliant to good albums nonetheless!
Always good to see the Lizzy fans still enjoying the greatest band of all time!! Timeless band!!
I was at the one with Charlie Sheen, that was bizarre as it was in the midst of his Tiger Blood phase lol.
Philomena, Phil's mom was such a jewel! What an amazing spirited woman. She really embraced Phil's fans. 🇺🇸
@@billaustinireland true he was really off his trolly that time.
Very knowledgeable interesting analysis. Subscribed will definitely look in again
So this show triggered me to go on a thin lizzy LP marathon and damm - so tough to find weak albums. That 6 album streak from Nightlife - Black Rose was crazy good. All great in their own way.
Great segment. *Just* got into Lizzy in the last seven or eight years. What a band!
Yeah I agree bought this when it came out and compared to other albums at the time it definitely stood out, lovely fold out sleeve and artwork and excellent music, probably my favourite still too.
agree, my fav 3 are in no order are thin lizzy, vagabonds, and nightlife.
Fighting is my favorite Lizzy album period. Completely strong stem to stern.
Had been flashed by "This is the one". Such a pity Phil left so young. :(
Thats the power of Lizzys music. Any given day the top 6 albums will change. They're all superb. Phil Lynott was unique. And Lizzy was a totally unique band. Great show, guys!
I actually really love some of the songs on the Vagabonds album, its up there for me!
"Everyone's Fave Thin Lizzy songs
are either "Boys are Back in Town "or "Jailbreak",
but "Whiskey in the Jar"& "Cowboy Song"were my faves."-📻🌐🌍🌎🌏🌐..
Philomena, Ballad Of A Hard Man, Emerald, Warrior, Johnny, Opium Trail.....and many more...."The Hero And The Madman"
Awesome break down,guys!
Long live Lizzy!!
The Rocker with Eric Bell is incredible.
Epic!
The Sword covered Cold Sweat and John Norum covered Wild One and Opium Trail(which is the one that had me investigate Thin Lizzy further)
the Sword would be that cool.
There were a couple of albums where Norum sounded possessed by the spirit of Phil. Damn good albums.
