Never listened to Marillion nor gave them much thought. After watching this video I can appreciate their musical work and have started to get into them. They are awesome.
That's great! I've always thought they might be hard to get into for someone who didn't listen to them in the heady days of the 80's but i guess the music has persevered over time. I thought maybe the production or Fish's over the top delivery and lyrics might be too much for later audiences but i was wrong.🙂
This was a terrific show and I love it when Steven comes on because you both know so much about the music and bands. I know you may worry about the length on the conversation but I love hearing the stories and seeing how much the music means to both of you...Music is the one thing that Guys can get emotional about ...and it’s okay. And the most important thing....I had never heard Marillion and I love what I’ve heard so far. Can’t wait to really dig in to their catalog and like you always say...that’s what the show is all about.
@@TranquilityFireReid Good to see a fellow Scotsman on here again Steven. I commented on your Wildhearts video. Have you seen or heard of a Scottish Marillion tribute band call Stillmarillion. I know a couple of members of that band, one of whom, the singer, Martin, sings with Steve Rothery's solo band
I just want to thank both of you guys. I had only ever heard Kayleigh on the radio here in Atlanta back in 1985 or so. That wasn't exactly a song that inspired me to investigate further. They weren't a band that ever made any other airplay down here so I never gave them a fair shake. I'm rectifying that problem now. Thanks again!
Hi guys, Thank you for doing this. I will attempt to do my list but it tends to change. Happy to say that I love both periods and got to see them with Fish and Hogarth. 10 - Happiness is the Road (I just ordered this... will rediscover and it can move up) 9 - Seasons End 8 - This Strange Engine 7 - Radiation 6 - Fear 5 - Marbles 4 - Misplaced Childhood 3 - Clutching at Straws 2 - Afraid of Sunlight 1 - Brave A band I adore with every fibre and atom of my body. If I were to make a movie I would even use their music to that. They are the soundtrack to my life and put me in a zen state when listening to them with headphones. God bless you both and Marillion Tino
well done to both of you, one of the best "ranking" show ever done on this channel. Lot of passion put into this, and many interesting arguments. One full hour just flew away....
It took quite a while but I love FEAR the best. It's such a deep album that with each listen reveals more and more! Each song has so many facets and angles, it takes a while to take it all in. A very satisfying album in the end!
Absolutely fascinating conversation guys. One hour long and I could’ve listened to Steven talking about Marillion for another hour. Just for the record (😁) I have Brave at No1 & Clutching at No2.
It’s a joy listening to the two of you, who clearly enjoy this amazing band. I like having new input on albums, I’ve already heard before. Have a great summer, everybody.
I prefer the band with the entry of H. One of the characteristics I love about them is that they’re bold to always try something new; somewhat like The Beatles did during their short career. And to me, even Marillion’s weakest album is better than a lot of releases from other bands. Of their latest studio releases F.E.A.R. is an amazing album. Thank you for the discussion...very interesting to listen to each of your point of view. Cheers!
As a lifelong Marillion fan this was fun to watch. Living in Canada, attending the Montreal Weekends, makes me feel like I have this great big secret that's dying to get out. This band "deserves" so much more recognition.
Thanks for the videos Pete. Somehow Marillion escaped me all these years, I have sense picked up three albums (Misplaced Childhood, Clutching Straws and the Thieving Magpie) after watching your video with Steven and I am wowed by them. Great work to you and Steven!!
Awesome, I've been waiting for this. You guys are correct the early artwork with from Mark Wilkinson is great, so good he did work for Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. My list is as follows... 1) Misplaced Childhood - Still listen to this regularly, at least once a month. 2) Clutching at Straws - This gets barely beaten by Childhood. Fantastic album, I would consider this a concept album as it seems to be autobiographical in some degree for Fish. 3) Script for A Jesters Tear 4) Seasons End 5) Fugazi - Side note the list from 3-5 could change by the day 6) Brave 7) Afraid of Sunlight 8) This Strange Engine 9) Holidays in Eden 10) - I would prefer B'sides Themselves over the rest of the catalogue, That being said I am definitely tracking down Marbles and F.E.A.R. because of you guys(Thanks).
Another band that suffered from lack of promotion was Crack the Sky. Their label Lifesong released the self titled debut in 1975 and even when Rolling Stone magazine named in record of the year and Wolfman Jack played it up on air the label didn't know what to do with it. They couldn't get the vinyl in stores when it was being played on the radio. People just moved on. Yet in some select cities where you could purchase it they had a huge fanbase. They still perform and release albums to this day. People fly from all over the world to see them live. Extremely underrated band.
Hi Again Guys. Agsin enjoyed that Great stuff! So Here's my ranking: 1.Clutching at Straws (A crowning moment for me!) 2. Misplaced Childhood 3. Script for a Jesters Tear 4. Brave 5. Fear 6. Fugazi 7. Sessions end 8. Afraid of the Sunlight 9. The Strange Engine 10. Holidays in Eden
I've been waiting for this one! My favourite band ever. Love Fish era and love Hogarth era as well. 1. Afraid of Sunlight 2. Misplaced Childhood 3. Clutching at Staws 4. Brave 5. This Strange Engine 6. Fugazi 7. Marbles 8. Seasons End 9. Somewhere Else 10. Script for a Jesters tear 11. Holidays in Eden 12. Marillion. Com 13. Anoraknophobia 14. Happiness is the road 15. Radiation 16. Sounds that can't be made 17 F. E. A. R
I heard the song “Lavender” probably about 8 years ago and didn’t like it much so I never checked these guys out. However, hearing you guys talk about them makes me want to give them a go; that’s why I love watching these even if I’m not familiar with the artist. I’ll have to check out the early stuff very soon!
This is a fantastic watch. Steven & Pete hit my nail straight on the head re: Brave & Clutching respectively - both arguably the pinnacle of the concept album to me - brilliant yet brutal journeys of dark beauty that leave you drained and drenched in sweat. There's a short list of such albums in rock music, and a band that created TWO of them (THREE if you include Misplaced) has reached the elite high ground of the genre.
Absolutely Brilliant I've been a Marillion fan for the best part of 10 years now and although i prefer Fish era...i love the H era too and i love how the two album picks blended in both era's...i need to listen to Clutching At Straws and Brave back to back now
Great great band! These are my favourites albums from Marillion: 1)Script for a jester's tears 2)Clutching at straws 3)misplaced childhood 4)Season's end 5)Brave (an awesome masterpiece) Thanks for the review!💪😊
My fav by far is "Clutching at Straws". I recall at the time many fans not liking it, as it was less proggy than previous albums, but for me it flows so well from song to song and perfectly captures the descent of an alcoholic.
I'm into this band since 1983. Saw them them 4 times with Fish (Fugazi tour 1984: Cologne, Mannheim. Misplaced CH tour 1985: Duesseldorf.1987 Clutching tour Heidelberg. My first Steve Hogart experience was in october 11, 1989 Duesseldorf Philipshalle. Been to countless concerts since then. I still like the fish material, but i can honestly say: Steve Hogarth is the man. Top Album F.E.A.R.
Love the vid guys Marillion one of my fave bands got most of there albums but have missed out on a few Hogarth albums, i like the Hogarth albums but nothing beats the fish albums the music changed and like you say the album art changed as well and it took me a while to get over it my top 5 5 sounds that cant be made 4 script for a jesters tear 3 fugazi 2 clutching at straws 1 misplaced childhood honorable mention's Season's End Holidays In Eden Fear Brave
It is very funny how you both portray the two souls of Marillion fans, not only by your tastes but for your outfit also. Great show. Regards from Catalonia. Slainte Mhath!
I will say that F.E.A.R is in my top 5. It just has an enchanting and dark quality that I love. After hearing The Leavers, I instantly fell in love with that album. I love every song on it. My favorite Marillion album is between Brave and Clutching at Straws. I’m probably going to have go with Clutching, but I love Brave so much. I think the Hogarth era has some of the most underrated material I’ve ever heard. The Fish era material may be the most well known albums, but there’s some absolutely great material from the Hogarth era. Great video guys!
"Definitive" ranking based on both lists: 12. Happiness Is The Road 11. Holidays In Eden 10. This Strange Engine 9. Marbles 8. F.E.A.R. 7. Afraid Of Sunlight 6. Fugazi 5. Script For A Jester's Tear 4. Season's End 3. Brave 2. Misplaced Childhood 1. Clutching At Straws
I love your videos Pete, and have never agreed with you more. Clutching At Straws is a masterpiece! In my opinion, no artist has ever laid their life on the line like Fish did on that album. My number 2 is Fugazi. Can't wait to watch the Fish episode.
Objectivly-Clutching is best! Personaly-My favourite is Seasons End! The Space is my favourite Marillion song!! That middle build up section is phenomenal!! And then.... the end of the song...what can I say?! Simply amazing!! Hogarths voice and vocal-performance is asthounding and incredible!! Ahhh.... just pure magic this song!! - FANTASTIC!!
Did you know that the vinyl release of Brave features a double groove on the final side of the album, providing two endings to the story? The first groove plays "The Great Escape" as heard on the CD, followed by "Made Again", providing the happy ending. The second groove plays "The Great Escape (Spiral Remake)" and 7 minutes of water noise, providing the downer ending...
Thanks guys, really excellent assessment of the back catalogue - I've been onboard since Script and stuck with the band throughout, definitely preferring the Hogarth era. I suspect every fan would come up with a different selection, so for me, Sounds that Can't Be Made and This Strange Engine would definitely make the top ten, but don't ask me which I'd strip out from your choices. I agree with Steven regarding the band's status during the Holidays In Eden period (and for some years later) - they headlined Cumbria Rock in 1991 and you literally could not give tickets away...only a couple of thousand were in the stadium when Marillion came on which was a difficult watch.
really enjoyed this, it's nice to hear like minding feelings on the best band that ever lived , my fave 3 are childhood , clutching, and brave but i love them all to be honest
Kudos to both of you, Pete and Steven. This was a great listen. Never mind the length, it's the discussion, anecdotes, insights and passion for the music that makes it a compelling and engaging hour spent. A good double act. Btw, I too missed an opportunity to see them early on - in 1982 when they played at Nostell Priory in the UK (with Jethro Tull headlining). I couldn't go, but a couple of my mates did and kindly reminded me about it for many, many years afterwards. B***ards. Personally prefer that era, with Script and Fugazi my favourites.
My first Marillion experience was hearing Clutching At Straws early this morning. Fantastic album. I'll take several more sips before sampling another release.
In my opinion, one of the best bands ever. Became a fan around '84 after hearing "Script". Never got to see them live until "Seasons End". Struggled with many h era songs, but every album has had an impact on my life at some moment. I go to every show I can, when they come to the Philadelphia and DC region. Fish, as well.
Great show guys, went and got Script on the release date and had all the Fish era albums and singles. Never even heard a Hogarth song that I know of, nothing against him but have never came across any Marillion since Fish left. Favourite albums for me 1/Script 2/ Childhood 3/Fugazi 4/ Straws. To be fair there were so many additional songs released as singles there were like 6 albums worth of Fishery! Lady Nina a B side, come on that was class. Amazing KISS posters Steven, Dynasty/Unmasked very cool.
Just listened to the 2021 Remastered version of Fugazi and this remaster definitely did something for the album to me. I always liked it but also there was something that disturbed me, without being able to really grab it. This is gone. It opened a new level for me. Excellent album. I highly suggest the remaster!
I am an exception within Marillion fans because I prefer the Steve Hogarth albums. It conveys much more emotion, in my opinion. I really like Fish, but he tries to imitate Peter Gabriel too much and it bothers me a little. My Top 5: 1- Seasons End 2- Script for a Jester Tear 3- Marbles 4- Brave 5- Clutching at Straws
Eduardo Pereira I’m more a Hogarth era fan as well. What they have become is a rock-jazz-pop quintet. If you look too much for prog you won’t find it and you won’t move past the Fish era. Marbles is a masterpiece. This Strange Engine, Brave not far behind. This doesn’t take away from the Fish era. Script and Misplaced Childhood are brilliant but the other two, Fugazi and clutching at Straws are highly overrated.
I'm like you Pete when it comes to Marillion's catalog. I started with them in the mid 80's, so my preferences lie there. Here are my favorites: 1 - Clutching at Straws 2 - Misplaced Childhood 3 - Script for a Jester's Tear 4 - Fugazi 5 - Seasons End 6 - Brave 7 - Marbles
Thoroughly enjoyable fellas , I’m a Fish myself but am going to make an effort with H for sure . I’m turning up at your house one day Pete and we can go chat music in a bar till the early hours . Many of you in the UK will recall the wonderful Tommy Vance , for me Pete is just as good , brilliant show , rock on
I knew with Pete's love of Marillion, and that fact that Steven was able to talk about the Wildhearts for 45 min. by himself, that this would be an in depth video.
Warm wet circles lyrics are just incredible. I love the description of the difference between the two fiancée's wedding preparations. "A honeymoon gambled on a ricochet" just perfect.
Misplaced childhood has to be one of the greatest albums of all time I hadn't listen to it for maybe 10 years and still I know every single word every single chord change it just will not grow old for me absolute classic
Great show! I saw Marillion shortly after Hogarth joined in a little bar here in London Canada. It was in the middle of winter and there were only a few dozen people showed up. I couldn't believe it, these guys played sold out stadiums not that long before! Anyway they still put on a great show despite the small crowd and crappy Canadian weather. H was playing those finger cymbal percussion things back then. I was doubtful the band could continue after Fish left, but that show kept me a fan.
I have Script For A Jesters Tear and Misplaced Childhood and I recently got both your respective top favourites Clutching At Straws and Brave and those albums are amazing!
Marillion is one of rock's most precious treasures. 1) Script 2) Misplaced 3) Fugazi 4) Brave 5) Clutching 6) Seasons End 7) Holidays in Eden 8) Anoraknophobia 9) Marbles and the rest ia up to you... Script one of my top ten albums
Excellent show - thanks guys! My ranking: 1. Script For A Jester's Tear 2. Misplaced Childhood 3. Clutching At Straws 4. Fugazi 5. Brave 6. Season's End 7. Afraid Of Sunlight 8. Holidays in Eden 9. Anoraknophobia 10. This Strange Engine
great rankings video. i am really enjoying their latest , with friends from the orchestra. i saw marillion with fish open for rush on the power windows tour in chicago. the crowd was very rude to them, yelling fake genesis. i was a fan of the group from then on, and played clutching at straws on my walkman taking the train to work way back then.
Great episode. I seen Marillion twice with Fish and perhaps twenty two times with h. All shows were fantastic and amazing. Fugazi was always my fav Fish era, So hard to pick an h era fav. Season`s End / Sounds That Can`t Be Made/ Holiday`s In Eden/ Brave/ FEAR/ all or so incredible.
My favorite band! Misplaced Childhood was the album I discovered first, but then I went back and forth between Fish and h albums. h has definitely become my favorite of the two, but honestly all of it is good to great. My own top ten will change depending on mood, so here it is for today. 10. Marillion . com 9. Holidays In Eden 8. Season's End 7. Afraid Of Sunlight 6. Marbles 5. Misplaced Childhood 4. Brave 3. Clutching At Straws 2. Sounds That Can't Be Made 1. Anoraknophobia
Got to meet Steve Rothery back in 2010 when he did a guitar clinic here in NYC at a place called the Dog Ear Tavern. Had very nice conversation with him. Lovely guy. Great episode Pete and Steve. Cheers 🍻
eeh...saw Marillion (the only time I've seen them) at Milton Keynes UK in 1986, dubbed 'Garden Party'. I went mainly for Jethro Tull, who were one of the support acts (great set). But Marillion were amazing. About half way through the main set Fish says "This is Pseudo Silk Kimono". They play Pseudo Silk Kimono. It goes into Kayleigh; which goes into Lavender Blue...we (20,000? of us) realise what's happening. They play the whole of Misplaced Childhood without a break, one of the best live musical experiences I've had.
I'm Like you Pete, Fish era all the way. Like Hogarth first few album but..... !. Misplaced Childhood. (Home Thoughts) Its a cliche to like this one but this is a very personal album. It got me through a tough time, just when it was released in '85. 2. Clutching At Straws. Just got the remastered version with the original version of Warm wet circles with the original lyrics. I heard this live at a fan club gig months before the album was released and afterwards Fish rewrote the whole album, so it was great to hear the original. 3. Script For A Jester's Tear (Bedsit Thoughts). Love the title track and Forgotten Sons. 4. B-Sides Themselves. This was a compilation of all their Fish era B-sides, including the full version of Margaret. Again heard this live at same fan club gig and the band brought Bruce Dickinson to help out but he had trouble singing the Mhairi's Wedding bit. 5. Afraid Of Sunlight. Just love the loose themes in this. 6. Season's End. Love the title track and it has my two favourite Hogarth tracks, After Me & Uninvited Guest 7. Fugazi (Hotel Thoughts) 8. This Strange Engine 9. Marillion.com 10. Brave Oh, if you're wondering about the brackets with Script, Fugazi and MC; Fish once said they were a trilogy of thoughts. The covers are a clue on the first two, the Jester in a bedsit when the band first started out. The Hotel room on Fugazi was when they were touring and MC when Fish being out on the road all the time was thinking of home. The theme of the person we would know as Kayleigh runs through some of the songs; Script, Jigsaw, Punch & Judy, and most of MC.
Great video! I've loved Marillion for more than 30 years, funny enough I started to know them about the first Hogarth album. I really love both periods but you'll see in my ranking that the Fish albums are at the top, they were always very special to me. 01.Clutching at straws 02.Fugazi 03.Misplaced Childhood 04.Script for a jester's tear 05.Marbles 06.Anoraknophobia 07.Brave 08.Afraid Of The Sunlight 09.Seasons End 10.Happiness is The Road
I never went past Holidays In Eden, actually had the Six of One collection. Saw them on the Seasons End tour in Atlanta which was a huge deal here. H was very good and now maybe I can start to catch up a little before they call it. Great chat gentlemen!
Tough to argue with your ranking as they are all so fantastic. For me, it's Misplaced then Clutching then Brave then Marbles then Happiness but so many great Marillion albums. Thanks guys!
im just glad to see Marillion content, i love both the Fish Era and Hogarth Era, i also love how every Hogarth cd sounds different from 1 release to the next, i dont wanna hear, the same formula as it was during Fish Era, , both singers have there distinct sounds but heres the difference Hogarth can sing any Fish Era song no way that Fish could handle a Hogarth Era song . im too big a fan to rate the cds but if i had to only pick 5 they would be 1. Brave 2 . Marbles 3. Misplaced Childhood 4. Fear 5 . Clutching at Straws and that kills me because i love sounds , and happiness seasons end but thats what top 20 lists are for
He can sing ANY Fish era song? Sing it well? Please....cut the hyperbole...You have your preferences, no problem there, but to say that he can sing any Fish song and do it justice is lying to yourself.
What a show guys.if anybody watching hadn't heard clutching at straws I'm sure they'll go n gie it a listen so well done .those first four albums have got me through life.i always go back to them and never get fed up.what a band !
Hey Pete, this was just fantastic. Forgive me but when I first saw your guest, Steven, I thought i was looking at a slightly younger version of FIsh, especially when I heard his Scottish accent. I've always enjoyed you ranking albums but this was really special, and it brought up many memories. Like you, I too live in Orange county so when you spoke about the Chance, I knew exactly what you were referring to as I've seen a few shows there. Unfortunately, Marillion's gig on Clutching tour wasn't one of them as I was sick as a dog. My buddy told me all about it and I was really p'd off. At least there's Loreley. I discovered the band when their debut album came out, and was fortunate to see them on Fugazi tour at the old Ritz in NYC. It was a sublime experience and as Steven reminisced, it was really cool to see Fish climbing the rafters to the balcony of the the club (before Eddie Vedder, lol). After the show, we gave our programs to a security guy and he came back with autographs from all five guys. To me, Clutching was their most mature album where the band came into its own and obviously it's the most personal and melancholy album from Fish's viewpoint, and like you, it's my #1. Like probably every old Marillion fan, I was disappointed when Fish left and very curious how the band would continue with H. Season's End dismissed those fears and I got a chance to see their show in NYC at the new Ritz (old Studio 54), with Dream Theater opening the show. If you know the story, what made this1989 gig special is that Marillion who loved DT's first LP, requested that Charlie Dominici play at that gig even though he was already sacked by DT. Holidays in Eden was a disappointment, but Brave was a watershed moment, a tremendous concept album that took me a while to get into (like Fugazi). Marillion didn't play around NYC until '95 when we saw them at Tramps; tiny club with maybe a couple hundred people but it allowed us to stand right by the stage; it was a tremendous gig with lots of good vibes from the audience. The band felt that and played 3 encores. After the show we hung around outside and met some of the guys, and Steve Hogarth chatted with us for quite a long time. Totally unpretentious; really cool guy. This was the last time I saw Marillion live. I lost interest after that until Marbles, and as much as I tried to like the music that came afterwards, I have hard time getting into it. Again, many Thanks to you and Steven for the trip down memory lane.
yeah yeah, Fish is great and all but the band I fell in love with is fronted by Mr Hogarth, so I'm just gonna rank the h albums: 13. Radiation 12. Brave 11. marillion.com 10. Holidays in Eden 09. Happiness is the Road 08. Somewhere Else 07. Afraid of Sunlight 06. Anoraknophobia 05. Seasons End 04. Marbles 03. Sounds That Can't Be Made 02. Fuck Everyone and Run 01. This Strange Engine
Hi Pete, hi Steven, hope you guys are doing great today, here's my ranking: -Afraid Of Sunlight -F.E.A.R -Holidays In Eden -Marbles -This Strange Engine -Somewhere Else -Radiation -Anoraknophobia -Marillion.com -Misplaced Childhood -Season's End -Brave -Script For A Jester's Tear -Fugazi -Clutching At Straws
Great to see "Clutching.." doing so well here. I remember Marillion right from the start, and this album was not hugely well received on it's release by die hard fans, but time has been kind to it
I find a lot of people think that about CAS. When it came out I was deeply disappointed in it and felt they'd finally lost whatever prog credentials they had, but they were never full on prog like say Yes or King Crimson and over the years I came to appreciate CAS as the best of what they did do in those first four albums.
Brave might be considered dark but if you have experienced some of what it is about and been in that same place, and empathise, it is in fact incredibly uplifting to have it there allowing you to return when you need that same empathy back. And that is whatever ending, the happy coda or sad spiral mix. When H signs “you’re holding on” and you know exactly how that feels and all of The Great Escape... it’s a life saver. In Falling from the Moon, Steve R puts down not only a sublime guitar break, but one of the most emotional on vinyl ever. Comparable with Carlos Santana’s Song of the Wind or Neil reaching the end of Like a Hurricane. It’s not just a special album but for some of us, a very very important album that has been a great help. Always loved Clutching at Straws, again I think for some, there is empathy with the end of that album too, Very lucky to have both Marillion’s. Pete Pardo, go see Marillion whenever you can, it’s a great show - always something different about the tracks live. I know this was about studio albums but honourable mention to Made Again anyway - Live in London, Rotterdam & Paris, fantastic set and Brave Live! P.S. Love what you do on UA-cam! Xx
My beloved Marillion, one of my favorites of all time, obviously prefer the Fish period, but Hogarth era has also produced some solid stuff, "Afraid of Sunlight", "Marbles" and "FEAR" are absolutely incredible albums. These guys should be HUGE, yet they arent, own every single album, and will continue as long as they are together to release them. "Misplaced Childhood" and "Clutching at Straws", what can I say, freaking masterpieces, both top 10 albums of all time for me.
Hi Pete liked the ranking of the albums of prog rock band Marillion. The banter you have with Simon Read is great, he's so in formative and passionate isn't he? Showing his singles from the band as well as the albums and artwork. Very interesting confisation whether you like prefer Fish the original lead singer now left, or his replacement Hogarth. Keep up the good work 👍👍👍👍👍.
Absolutely agree with both of you in your comments for different reasons. I also fell out of love with them around this strange engine, after seeing them in concert. They didn't play any fish era stuff other than the opening tease of script. I re-engaged on the last tour but haven't really bonded again with the sound. Brave is their best album although not my favourite (clutching for me as well). Brave is an album that I hated on the first 4 listen throughs. Really couldn't stand it but then something clicked and its incredible. The tour for the album was mind blowing - I saw it three different venues across the UK. The third time in Wolverhampton was memorable as the guys who drag H away were a bit too rough and didn't let him back on to sing. The rest of the band played instrumental for way longer than on the other nights. Great review guys - would really be interested to hear your thoughts on the fish solo catalogue.
I totally agree with you on this, Pete. Up to Marbles ( which I think is overrated btw) Marillion was my favorite band, together with Queensryche, but I slowly lost interest too. I still buy every album, but I always regret it and rarely listen to them again, but I always try it again! 1. Clutching at Straws, 2. Fugazi, 3. Script for a Jester's Tear, 4. Misplaced Childhood, 5. Brave, 6. Season's End, 7. Afraid of Sunlight, 8. Holidays in Eden, 9. This Strange Engine, 10. Sounds That Can't Be Heard, 11. Marbles, 12. F.U.C.K., 13. .Com, 14. Radiation, 15. Anaraknophobia, 16. Somewhere Else, 17. Happiness is the Road. First 4 can change every other week though.
I started with the Fish era, bought "Script" in 1983, but always liked the music better than the vocals. years later, in 1989, I bought "Seasons End" and everything finally clicked into place. A great band backing one of the most powerful & versatile voices I'd ever heard. From then on, Marillion were one of my favorite bands of all time and not just a band I played once in a while. The music they have made since H joined has had far more depth and variety, and they continue to be creative. The Fish years had a sort of "sameness" where there was little growth between their 4 studio albums IMO. With H, right up the latest album "An Hour Before It's Dark", they continue to bring surprises and new sounds and ideas. For me a Marillion ranking would be the Fish albums in the 4 lowest slots and mental fight to figure out which H albums should take to top and middle positions.
Loved watching this and hearing your views. Brave, Marbles and FEAR are my top interchangeable three albums, closely followed by Clutching at straws, Afraid of sunlight, Misplaced childhood and anoraknophobia. Not that my opinion means anything :) thought I'd share anyway.

I saw Marillion with Fish during the Clutching At Straws tour. They played The Ritz in Manhattan, and Saga was the opening band. Great show.
Thank you very much for ranking the studio albums of: Marillion. I love this band.🎤🎸🎵🥁
Best hour I've spent in a loooong time. Brilliant, informed chat. Fantastic work guys... 👏👏👏
Hi guys,
Thank you for doing this. I will attempt to do my list but it tends to change. Happy to say that I love both periods and got to see them with Fish and Hogarth.
10 - Happiness is the Road (I just ordered this... will rediscover and it can move up)
9 - Seasons End
8 - This Strange Engine
7 - Radiation
6 - Fear
5 - Marbles
4 - Misplaced Childhood
3 - Clutching at Straws
2 - Afraid of Sunlight
1 - Brave
A band I adore with every fibre and atom of my body. If I were to make a movie I would even use their music to that. They are the soundtrack to my life and put me in a zen state
when listening to them with headphones.
God bless you both and Marillion
Tino
well done to both of you, one of the best "ranking" show ever done on this channel. Lot of passion put into this, and many interesting arguments. One full hour just flew away....
It took quite a while but I love FEAR the best. It's such a deep album that with each listen reveals more and more! Each song has so many facets and angles, it takes a while to take it all in. A very satisfying album in the end!
Great vid. Very comprehensive review, and a good chat between two fans. Well worth the wait. For me, it really is a 'tale of two bands'.
Marillion has recorded alot of great albums, but "Fugazi" has & always will be a personal favorite of mine 😎
Me as well. I think I like every track on the album. What is your favorite if you don’t mind me asking. Other than Fugazi? Thanks

3. Jigsaw
4. Emerald Lies
Watching every second of it ! Loving every second of it ! Thank you at the two for such a great episode !
Absolutely fascinating conversation guys.
One hour long and I could’ve listened to Steven talking about Marillion for another hour.
Just for the record (😁) I have Brave at No1 & Clutching at No2.
Thanks Paul!
Another great video with Steven Reid showing his love for a prog band. I hope there are many more to come.
It’s a joy listening to the two of you, who clearly enjoy this amazing band. I like having new input on albums, I’ve already heard before.
Have a great summer, everybody.
Clutching At Straws,..for the win!
thanks guys! this is really great. i,ve followed these guys since the early days of KERRANG!!!
Cheers!
I drove ten hours through snow and rain to see Marillion and I'd do it again and again, I love this band.
3) Script for A Jesters Tear
4) Seasons End
5) Fugazi - Side note the list from 3-5 could change by the day
6) Brave
7) Afraid of Sunlight
8) This Strange Engine
9) Holidays in Eden
10) - I would prefer B'sides Themselves over the rest of the catalogue, That being said I am definitely tracking down Marbles and F.E.A.R. because of you guys(Thanks).
I remember seeing them in a bar in New Jersey. Great performance as I recall.
This has been brilliant!
Thanks for doing this guys👍👍👍
Great show. I love Marillion with Fish.
My absolute favorit: Clutching at Straw. It’s a piece of art.
Really like all of the Hogarth era albums, but as a fan from the beginning I have to say I much prefer the earlier Fish albums. Great show folks!!

Halfway through the first EP now, already loving it and I haven’t even gotten to “Grendel” yet! 🤘🤘
It's been a couple of years, what album are you up to now mate?
Fair assessment of the albums and great conversation.
Pete, definitely recommend you get the Brave Deluxe Version.
The 5.1 mix is one of the most amazing things I’ve ever heard!!!!!!
Absolutely Brilliant I've been a Marillion fan for the best part of 10 years now and although i prefer Fish era...i love the H era too and i love how the two album picks blended in both era's...i need to listen to Clutching At Straws and Brave back to back now
Like the name!
@@nickadams8952 Thank you :)
Great great band! These are my favourites albums from Marillion:
1)Script for a jester's tears
2)Clutching at straws
3)misplaced childhood
4)Season's end
5)Brave (an awesome masterpiece)
Thanks for the review!💪😊
Love the vid guys Marillion one of my fave bands got most of there albums but have missed out on a few Hogarth albums, i like the Hogarth albums but nothing beats the fish albums the music changed and like you say the album art changed as well and it took me a while to get over it my top 5
5 sounds that cant be made
4 script for a jesters tear
3 fugazi
2 clutching at straws
1 misplaced childhood
honorable mention's Season's End Holidays In Eden Fear Brave
Forgot to say, this was a superb watch..thanks guys!
"Definitive" ranking based on both lists:

6. Fugazi

2. Misplaced Childhood
1. Clutching At Straws

I love your videos Pete, and have never agreed with you more. Clutching At Straws is a masterpiece! In my opinion, no artist has ever laid their life on the line like Fish did on that album. My number 2 is Fugazi. Can't wait to watch the Fish episode.
What a great discussion! Thank you!
Thanks for another really enjoyable show Pete.
Most Awesome Show ! Thanks Pete & Steve
Is that on the deluxe vinyl too.... I've never checked as yet.
These guys don't have half the stuff between them that I have 😂
@@MrHousesoftheholy I only showed a small part of my Marillion collection Nigel... ;-)
Wow! I need to get my hands on it! AND DANG! I just told the virtues of "Afraid of" and "This Strange..." and TOTALLY forgot BRAVE!!!
Wow, gotta track that down
Thank you for publishing this pod cast I really enjoyed it.
I agree with Pete. Clutching is the best for me. The most emotional! Le lyrics are incredible. Thank you for the video (and the english lesson!)
Thanks Andrew. It's actually my eldest daughter's old bedroom that I'm sitting in, but the KISS posters are mine!
My Top 5:
1- Seasons End
2- Script for a Jester Tear
3- Marbles
4- Brave
5- Clutching at Straws
This list is very jacked up.
Totally agreed.
Here are my favorites:
1 - Clutching at Straws
2 - Misplaced Childhood
3 - Script for a Jester's Tear
4 - Fugazi
5 - Seasons End
6 - Brave
7 - Marbles
Clutching at Straws and Misplaced Childhood are my favorites.
Script one of my top ten albums

great rankings video. i am really enjoying their latest , with friends from the orchestra. i saw marillion with fish open for rush on the power windows tour in chicago. the crowd was very rude to them, yelling fake genesis. i was a fan of the group from then on, and played clutching at straws on my walkman taking the train to work way back then.
Brilliant band in both forms. Saw them with Fish and H. Steven Reid is a fantastic reviewer.
I'm sure Mr Steven and myself have had this conversation many many times. What a band!
We have indeed Mr Neil and on the way to seeing them live many times as well. Yes, what a band!
Even though I am not a Marillion fan, I still enjoy these videos very much. 👍
My favorite band! Misplaced Childhood was the album I discovered first, but then I went back and forth between Fish and h albums. h has definitely become my favorite of the two, but honestly all of it is good to great. My own top ten will change depending on mood, so here it is for today.

Got to meet Steve Rothery back in 2010 when he did a guitar clinic here in NYC at a place called the Dog Ear Tavern. Had very nice conversation with him. Lovely guy. Great episode Pete and Steve. Cheers 🍻
One of my favourite bands and artwork as a teenager in the mid-1980s. 🎶
Great video to watch different opinions that’s what great about this we all have different tastes but still have love for Marillion
eeh...saw Marillion (the only time I've seen them) at Milton Keynes UK in 1986, dubbed 'Garden Party'.
Love the title track and it has my two favourite Hogarth tracks, After Me & Uninvited Guest
7. Fugazi (Hotel Thoughts)
8. This Strange Engine
9. Marillion.com
10. Brave
Oh, if you're wondering about the brackets with Script, Fugazi and MC; Fish once said they were a trilogy of thoughts.
Great video fellas, really enjoyed 🙂
Love the constructive conversation about great music.
Great video! I've loved Marillion for more than 30 years, funny enough I started to know them about the first Hogarth album. I really love both periods but you'll see in my ranking that the Fish albums are at the top, they were always very special to me.

Holidays in Eden!. What a fantastic album. Only discovered it because of this video. Reminds me of The Police, Big Country. Very British sounding.
"So if you want my address it's number one at the end of the bar..." ...and the guitar solo in Sugar Mice gets me into tears, everytime...
My favourite Marillion album
Sugar mice has one of the best guitar solos ever!!
Totally agree. Fish era songs sung by H are like nails on a chalkboard to me.
Marbles is their masterpiece!!!!!
Again, many Thanks to you and Steven for the trip down memory lane.
yeah yeah, Fish is great and all but the band I fell in love with is fronted by Mr Hogarth, so I'm just gonna rank the h albums:

Thanks Adam. Great post! We have also recorded a Fish solo albums show. It was done around this same time as this one. Thanks for watching!
