What? He's been highly rated since he hit the whole scene and hasn't stopped or faded from memories of top guitarists and all everywhere.. really. Underrated? Nope......
That's a tough one to me because the music of Journey isn't gonna get much respect or sanction up next to Zeppelin or some of the other greats. I'm sorry but alot of Journeys music was kinda cheese ball. Ballads. Syrupy. Now I know he's phenomenal. Seriously. In Santana at 15. Dude is right up there. I just don't know if I'd put him top 5 or not based on the music of Journey. I know he can play though. Done stuff with Jan Hammer. More Jazz fusion. Which is what the bands first 2-3 albums before they hit it big were. Before Steve Perry. It's all about the songs. I'd probably have him top 12-15. Not top 5. He's good though
I love Neal's guitar lines and grew up thinking he could make me fly(just like EVH)the things coming out of their amps just blew me away(both the slow melodic melodies and the ripping fast links 😎👌 this was such a treat and sammy is a beast, he can rock and bring a party literally anyway 👏
I don’t think there’s a better song than the 1980’s live one “Mother Father Sister Brother” they did. It’s heart melting. One of the best performances I’ve ever seen hands down!
Great little interview. Two of rock music's titans sitting and jamming! Schon is an incredible guitarist. So great to see two old dudes having a good time.
I literally have NEVER seen an interview with Schon where didn’t have a guitar in his hands. If I could play like him I’d probably sleep with mine also, which I bet he does. What an absolute guitar God he is, Sammys no slouch either and when they did that Schon Hagar thing in the 80’s it was pure gold.

Schon and Perry together was total magic. I still watch Mother, Father live on youtube and the guitar and vocals are from another planet. Nice to hear Neal say nice things about Perry whose voice from those days is unmatched.
Neal Schon has to be one of the most underrated players in history. The guy is a freaking beast and can play anything. Just listen to the first song on Journey's first album in 1975. The song is Of A Lifetime and it is next-level great, but very few people are familiar with it.
I have loved Neil Schon from the moment I first heard him play. Still so fast! What a joy it's been just to try to learn from him. I loved how he explained how it is when you decide to play. He just put Hendrix and Clapton in his pocket. That's literally how it is!
This was the best road trip thus far Sammy! Neil is the consummate professional and as humble as you can get! And the guy can friggin wail! Sammy, god bless your pipes!! You are a ripper of a singer! That collaboration on that tune was outstanding!! God bless you both, gentlemen!!!

Holy shit! So cool! Sams always on and neal shreads the shit out that hollowbody! He fits so many notes into a small space, and with so much feel and vibe! Not many players can do that! He's definitely one of the best lead and rhythm players of all time . And sams standing Hampton record was one of the best records of all time! Two world class artists doin what they love! Love the show Sam! Thnx. God bless!
Great comparison Andrew! Steve Lukather is probably the only other exception in that category! He is also amazing ! as a giitar player myself, knowing how hard that is to do. Even hendrix didnt have that much speed ,mixed with feel! Totally insane amounts of talent there! Toto and Lukather are so underrated. Neal and Luke's style are verry similar😎
Not many people have ever heard of the band HSAS. I wish I still had the album! I bought it back in the early 80's. Look it up! Cool stuff for sure. A great collaboration of the best together!
Nice I love both those guys, I saw both years ago at the Texas jam in the Houston Astrodome both headliners great show, and I would love to see Steve Perry with Journey, possibly with Arnel as well he loves Steve that is his idol there would be no problem there 👍
It's great to hear that Schon still respects Steve- I would hope so. Let's see what Perry Says. Steve needed space- alot of it. To reclaim his life back & get peace as a human being. I missed Steve so much. The music industry can be hell & it takes a toll. I respect Steve for stepping away. And He found love. I hope that Neal & Steve have/will bury the PAST. Whether together or Solo- these are 2 of the purest musicians on the planet!
Neal is just saying he’d like to work and or collaborate with Steve again, but that’s only if Steve is interested and wants to. It’s still kinda a one sided thing. There is bad blood still between Neal and Steve. Im guessing from Steve parting ways with Journey in late 90s. I do think it’s time to make peace with each other and let past issues in past and see if they can move forward in some way at the very least a friendship if no music comes of it oh well. I’d like them to at least be friendly and communicate with one another again. He’s waiting on Steve. I feel Neal would have to meet him face to face for coffee or dinner. Not a shout out or saying it in a video.
Sam and Neal have a great groove and sound great together- always have. Neal plays really "tasteful" leads, fills and shreds that completely compliment the music and always lands on his feet. Just a great era we live in to continue to see and hear this stuff.

@@JB-tr6nu By overusing the term 'Guitar God' until it is so diluted it doesn't do justice to the true greats.
Top 5 ever easily!
Legend and still alive!
He is extraordinary!
I play, I know!!!
Great fun clip of 2 great guys doing what they do 🙏🙏🙏
That's a tough one to me because the music of Journey isn't gonna get much respect or sanction up next to Zeppelin or some of the other greats.
Absolutely like a Mozart, Beethoven caliber of music!
Neal is like Frampton. Amazing melodic guitar chops and versatility. And always hard working.
Great little interview. Two of rock music's titans sitting and jamming! Schon is an incredible guitarist. So great to see two old dudes having a good time.
Two seasoned vets!! Two dudes with a lot of history together! 👌🏽🙏🏼👍🏻✌🏿Good stuff!!! Thnx!!!
What a great video! I was blessed to see Journey live in San Francisco. Neal Schon is one of the best guitarists of all time.
Jam Onward, gentlemen! Gen X, 1965!
You guys are the rock series of my entire life!
Think of the guys Sammy has played with. From Ronnie Montrose to Neil to EVH to Satch. Unreal what that guy has seen and heard from the absolute bests to do it
Think of the guys Sammy has played with. From Ronnie Montrose to Neil to EVH to Satch. Unreal what that guy has seen and heard from the absolute bests to do it
Yeah, him and Graham Bonnet have some amazing history.
What is that? A Gretsch he’s holding? I’m not up on the semi hollow bodies. lol
two of the very nicest guys in the business...EVER !
Schon and Perry together was total magic. I still watch Mother, Father live on youtube and the guitar and vocals are from another planet. Nice to hear Neal say nice things about Perry whose voice from those days is unmatched.
I have admired both of these guys since the eighties. After this video I admire them even more.
LOVE these videos! It was so cool to hear Neil shred up close and, Sammy, your pipes are still INCREDIBLE! Thank you, Sammy!!!
Totally agree.
Shit, I was smiling all the way through it!
He could smoke anyone 16 to his age
Neal is Criminally Underated as a guitar player! Any respect he may be given is NOT ENOUGH!!!!
Neal Schon has to be one of the most underrated players in history. The guy is a freaking beast and can play anything. Just listen to the first song on Journey's first album in 1975. The song is Of A Lifetime and it is next-level great, but very few people are familiar with it.
Underrated? Nobody under rates Neal Schon. There's always somebody on these music threads who says something like that.
That's an unbelievably good tune.
I am!!
Well said! True legendary gentleman musicians with grit and soul.
Neal is a incredible guitar player I've ever seen, and to see he missed steve even though his not saying it. Acknowledging steve is one of the greatest. Thank you sir for Acknowledging my greatest ever favorite singer.
Neal has some of the 80's greatest solos, Stoned in Love and Be good to yourself are classics.
Stone in love is one of the most catchy riffs ever !!!!
Yup! Neal's soaring leads are stuff of legend!!!
stoned in love is basically one long solo
how about be good to yourself? scorcher.
@@kensurrency2564 I love the solo in Be good to yourself, and the outro stuff as well
I loved the first Journey album when they were prog rock.
Wonderful two legends....neal or Sammy lol..it's great to see these two still have the passion after all this time. Stay healthy you two the world needs quality men such as yourselfs. Take care god bless both of you!!
This was spectacular…
Sweet blues jamming there. My favorite all time from Neal is Walks Like a Lady live.... that song is smokin'!! Have a great Independence Day weekend!
Schon is a very underrated guitarist and performer. The man can absolutely jam! He also happens to be a really good guy. Sammy is Sammy. I love that dude!! Both of these guys are living a dream. I’d love to party with Sammy.
Underrated?? By who? He is revered!
@@iansnyder274 the geniuses at rolling stone. 😜🤪
I would say underappreciated.
So great. 2 legends laying it down. Neal as wishy-washy as always. Sam's always been the real deal. Bless em both
Wishy washy? How could anyone choose just one with all the questions he was asked?
Holy shit! Thnx. God bless!
A master of melodic shred. Steve Lukather is another guy that's great at that.
I love the feel .... Neal hears it !!!! And so complimenting to a singer 💯
This show is awesome! Man Sammy that was good! I love Neal wow that dude is absolutely insane on the guitar. Keep it up!
both still enjoy their craft, and show it, such great guys to listen too, and Neal is very humble,,,,
Warms the soul to hear that he wants to work with Steve Perry soon! They co-wrote some timeless stuff together! Can't wait!!!
Great stuff from the Red Rocker! Neal is so likeable and he left the door open for a reunion!
Not many people have ever heard of the band HSAS. I wish I still had the album! I bought it back in the early 80's. Look it up! Cool stuff for sure. A great collaboration of the best together!
I've still got it on vinyl. You can get a live DVD online.
All of it is on YT too.
I bought the cassette when it first came out, and still have it. If you stream music, Amazon music and Spotify have it.
2 Legends and just great dudes!
I've always loved Neal's playing... it's so good! Great to see those two having fun!
Journey is timeless music
Nice I love both those guys, I saw both years ago at the Texas jam in the Houston Astrodome both headliners great show, and I would love to see Steve Perry with Journey, possibly with Arnel as well he loves Steve that is his idol there would be no problem there 👍
Saw Journey in April. Neil is one of those few guitarists that make me want to throw all my guitars away.
Don't do that. It's the ride not the destination. Play, enjoy, have fun!
2 legends just having fun... That's how it's done kids ... Nothing fake... Just kicking ass... Thanks guys for all the good songs ...
@@jefffaust89 yep I know all this pretty much like you do.
Oh my sweet Jesus, please come into everyone's life. 🙏🙏🙏
Neal sounds and looks pretty damn good! Sammy isn't too bad either. I enjoyed this. Thank you Sammy and Neal.
Playing can’t be faked, but the appearances- Botox, fillers, surgery, hair color. Don’t kid yourself.
They are both old as can be for real, but that ain't no thang. They still kick it in the butt with their skills!
Super Jam 78 St Louis Bush Auditorium I was there and it was off the charts
Stone in Love is one of the smoothest guitar solos ever. His guitar doesn’t over power but flows naturally.
and the bassline as the solo goes on just takes the entire thing to the stratosphere. You know what I'm talkin' about!
@@vixapphire Exactly, Ross Valory a great bass player, He never seemed to get no love in that band but I thought he was great
One of my favorite tunes ever. Great choice dude! 👌
HSAS is an underrated masterpiece 😊
Still listen to it to this day.
Sam and Neal have a great groove and sound great together- always have. Neal plays really "tasteful" leads, fills and shreds that completely compliment the music and always lands on his feet. Just a great era we live in to continue to see and hear this stuff.
Incredibly Brilliant Guitarist Musician Neil !
Wow. Just amazing.
