If I Could Only Own 1 Watch - The Perfect Do-It-All Rolex: Datejust vs Explorer

  • As I mentioned in a recent video, I'm done with Rolex. I don't plan to purchase a new one anytime soon, mainly because there are already multiple Rolex watches I love in my collection-most importantly the Rolex Explorer (ref. 114270) which I consider the perfect, do-it-all, any situation watch that works with almost every sartorial selection. However, as my Explorer is currently away for servicing, I've been reacquainted with an old flame-a classic Rolex two-tone Datejust (ref. 16233) belonging to my wife-which has triggered so many memories, emotions and new discoveries. But compared to my current line-up which includes the Rolex Explorer, a Tudor Submariner (ref. 79190,) Rolex Day-Date (ref.18238,) Rolex GMT-Master II "Pepsi" (ref. 16710,) and my "Bluesey" Tudor Submariner (ref. 16613,) if I had to pick just one out of all of them, it would absolutely be the Datejust. Why is this watch so compelling? How does it compare to all the others? And if I could only own one watch for the rest of my life, why is it currently my number one choice? If you had to choose only one watch to wear for the rest of your life, what would it be? Please share in the comments below!

Back in day that two tone datejust is THE watch many regular people would buy to celebrate a marriage, promotion, having a child/grandchild, starting own business etc. A proud moment you could walk into an AD, for that "made it" moment. Many a restaurant owner to trades people I knew would celebrate opening their business by buying this watch (and many are still wearing it day/night 30 years later). Despite seeming elegant today, due to its 36mm, its an incredibly solid watch. Datejust over an explorer all the way. Personally, if I had to choose one of my own watches as the only life, its a rolex 5700.

Sadly, no particular watch is connected with these memories as that was way before my interest in the hobby started. Interestingly the purchase of my Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch this year also increased my appreciation for my Sinn 556i as a do-it-all piece that is less complicated, more robust and somehow classless, joining entry-level simplicity with borderline luxury quality.

In my opinion, between the two the Datejust is a formal watch that can cover other bases while the Explorer is the true do-it-all. I can easily see someone using it on the beach Saturday, at Mass in the Sunday and back to work in the Monday. It feels moderate but has an appeal to adventure - like many of us, i believe. It's the sole Rolex i would care to have although i'm more inclined in looks (and price) to the Lorier Falcon and Smiths Everest. Great video! To me, the conundrum of the “only 1 watch” issue is that there will always be some activity or situation for which the watch is ill suited. For those who hardly ever wear a suit and never a tux, the watches in the video (and most of the ones in the comments) are 99.9% solutions. However, for those who do, most of these watches aren’t a particularly good fit. That said, the classic DJ36 or 41 probably come closest to the “1 watch” mark. For me, if you put a gun to my head, the 1 watch would be - ALS 1815 annual calendar.

If I could only have one watch, it'd be the Grand Seiko Snowflake or Rolex Explorer 2 Polar 16570. I've had the pleasure of being able to try both of them on and they're both phenomenal. Between their specs, design, versatility. In a lot of ways, I couldn't ask for more. Another great video, TGV!

TGV, this is the first video of yours I have watched in a while, and can I just say that the production is astounding. Excellent work, and the content was of course superb. Great essay, on this great watch. (Though I’m personally not a big fan of the Roman numerals)
My father in law owns a 67 two-tone datejust with jubilee bracelet. He bought it with his first pay-check. I looked at it properly the other day and it’s FANTASTIC! Even though I always find two-tone a little brash; due to it’s age, the dial has faded & its shininess (is that a word?), has subdued a little.
I will never wear it, as it eventually will belong to my missus & then my daughter; as you always say, it’s a watch you can hand down generations. 😉

After having bought, obsessed over, and sold many “GADA” watches, I’m currently settled fairly comfortably on a DJ 41 as an everyday wear. The configuration I chose (rhodium / jubilee / domed bezel) is definitely not too noticeable and screams “I’m a watch” more so than “I’m a Rolex”. Thanks for the video.

Very tough call to make TGV. I have been lucky enough to own both but the one I kept, after selling a 5 digit DJ and 14060, was a mid 90s 14270. Classy, strap monster and goes with anything and suitable anywhere from meetings to mountains, board room to the beach and even diving to 25m. It just does it all and mine has never missed a beat. in 30 plus years though I do service it every five to six years to ensure it keeps going like a charm. And it does

Loved this video. I remember as a 12 y.o. straining towards the screen to determine that Bond was wearing a Rolex. I purchased a Rolex Sea Dweller new in 1980, followed by a Rolex 2 tone ( Rolesor) Oysterquartz I purchased in Geneva. I still have it. 36mm in diameter, Buckley dial - white with painted Roman numerals, thermocompensated movement which came in -9 sec/yr when measured against WWV (no position error it was in my sdb). I still have it. The second hand latches into place with each tick, the precision of the sound is amazing. Highly finished movement, Rolex made only 25,000 of these Oysterquartz watches over the space of 25 years. Of course Rolex is not Patek Philippe, I own a few of those, however Rolex brand equity is unmatched. The Sea Dweller I purchased in 1980 hammered down 12.5x it’s purchase price when I sold it at auction in 2005 Sotheby’s New York. I could certainly be happy with just my Oysterquartz. I feel that most Rolex models are overpriced, but damn! You certainly get your money back plus some when you go to sell. I must say I really appreciate the herculian effort Rolex goes through to maintain the perceived value of their watches. That they can do so even while producing 1M watches/year is truly remarkable. Could not help but notice the Oysterquartz cameo in today’s video. 😊 Your’s are the best, keep up the good work and God Bless. ❤❤Chow

A few weeks later, arrives my watch, new battery (and new gasket? , pressure tested?. AND NO CHARGE!!🤯🤯😊😊Gratis!

I find I use a chronograph a lot to time things, if I had to restrict myself to one do-it-all watch I'd probably go for a Speedmaster '57, which is not huge (41.5mm) and also has a separately adjustable hour hand, useful when you travel. An alternative would be the Nivada Grenchen Chronomaster, at about 20-25% of the price of a Speedmaster '57.

Of all the luxury pieces I have tried on in AD’s, the two (I know you said 1 but hey) that stood out the most were the blackbay58 - the hark back to older variations, lack of crown guard, the use of gilt and the size all spoke to me. The second being the new Rolex Explorer1, to see how far it’s come, the beautiful 3,6,9, the gorgeous lume, the history behind it, the under the radar appeal and the fact it was Flemmings watch of choice. I stipulate tried on in AD’s because my Dads 59 Omega small seconds is incredibly special as well but needs to be cared for greatly. So that’s three… oh dear

I would love to have a 36mm Rolex two tone date just in my collection of watches but it's unaffordable to me so will probably never have one. I have three Seiko 5 automatic watches in my collection which I really enjoy wearing. My automatic of choice though which I wear often is one of three field watches that I own and that is my Hammond Khaki King with a brown dial which looks gold in certain light conditions. I really enjoy military style watches being ex military and that particular watch is perfect for me. It wears well on my smaller size wrist and is accurate and is slim and can be worn perfectly with a suit or casual dress equally. I have several other brands in my collection also with Citizen Eco Drive watches and Seikos and several Casio watches my favourite of those being the Data Bank watch and my two G-Shock 5610's. Great video as always TGV.

I own both. Love both. But have found that I need the date. Well, I don't need it but it is really day to day useful. 36mm is a magical size even with 7.75" wrists. I lost the taste and perhaps lust for other Rolexs after I bought the DJ in 2019. I did not expect that to happen. And thankfully or luckily it happened right before the Rolex Madness began. A strange thing this watch hobby is. I thought I was out then an IWC dragged me back in! I guess I am in for life now! Thanks for the video. That goes without saying but I say it anyway.

Aged 12 in 1969, I promised myself I’d get one because it was the astronaut’s watch…. I have a recollection of them being advertised at £158 in the back of Exchange & Mart (UK Pre-internet printed Ebay equivalent…..). Anyway, it took me until 1990 to do it but it remains a treasured piece in regular rotation…… of course I fell into the rabbit hole of collecting eventually and the Speedmaster has watched watches come and go and myself in the throes of buyers guilt and sellers remorse on a regular basis. I sense it has an amused tolerance of my antics secure in the knowledge it will not be let go….
