If You Only Want To Own 1 Luxury Watch - 5 Reasons Why A Rolex DateJust Is The Best Option At $2000+

  • Опубліковано 31 лип 2017
  • I get asked every day my recommendation for a luxury watch for those not looking to collect but to have one single "do it all" luxury piece. A few months ago I shared my thoughts on why the Omega Seamaster makes a great first luxury watch. But that was on the assumption it would be the first of many in a collection or part of a journey in collecting. What if you just want one watch or only need to add one luxury piece to an existing collection? The DateJust from Rolex is my top suggestion. In my opinion it has the most to offer and so, today I share my 5 reasons why. From the modernity and rugged dependability of the contemporary 11620 or 116334, to the more affordable vintage charmers like the 16200, 16030 or even quartz versions like the 17013. In terms of history, versatility, value for money, quality, and just the sheer amount of options to choose from, it's hard to beat! I also share which DateJusts I have had the pleasure of owning and a brief history, including a very special guest, sir Winston Churchill himself.

    Hi TGV
    Very good video, and very good Churchill imitation😂
    I could add:
    "We will wear them on the beaches, we will wear them in the air and in the streets. We will never give up on our Rolex'es"
    But off course, in the light of WW2 that would be kind of distasteful, so I wouldn't do that😖 Oops...
    Another choice - if you would want to go a bit lower in terms of price - could be the Breitling Colt. Not quite as elegant for formal occasions but one could still see as acceptable with a suit.
    Keep up the good work👍

    My first luxury watch was indeed a Rolex DateJust that belonged to my grandfather. I've inherited it days before he passed, when he removed it from his wrist and gave it to me when he was at the hospital. It's a 1974, 1601 Stainless Steel with white gold bezel, jubilee bracelet, and white Pie Pan dial, with yellow gold hands and stick markers.

    Funny story....back in 2001, I purchased a new two tone Datejust with a porcelain white Buckley (Roman) dial. I showed it to a friend of mine, who was into watches back then, and he commented “it looks like an old man watch!” I sold it a few weeks after, and I have regretted it ever since. The lesson being, if you like it, keep it and make yourself happy.

    The Rolex Datejust is my only watch because all my other watches were stolen during a break in and my home owners insurance won't pay nearly enough to replace the watches i lost :( but my Datejust just happened to be the watch i wore to work that day so its become very special to me and i never take it off now.

    • @hillbillyartscrafts4367
      @hillbillyartscrafts4367 6 років тому +6

      exactly! but it doesn't work like that. if you want full cost replacement you have to add it to your policy and that adds to the cost. its also a good idea to take lots of pictures of your watches and keep box and papers put up so you have proof you own the watch if it shows up in a pawnshop or some other store. police report + papers with serial numbers are a key thing to have. lucky i hve lots of pictures of my watches and some of the boxes and papers so if i ever see my watch in the future i will get it back. PS report the watches you own to your insurance provider and you can get full coverage on them for a few dollars a month

    I think for an 'only luxury watch', you're best staying with Rolex or Omega. They have the brand recognition, and good service support. Most Rolexes are a good only watch, especially the Explorer I, Sub, Oyster Perpetual, Datejust, and Daytona. From Omega, you'd be looking at the Seamaster 300, Aqua Terra, Globemaster, or Speedmaster (any of them, really).

    This is the crown jewel of my collection. I bought a fake one aged 15 in New York (long gone). Years later I wanted to get the real deal as a 30th birthday present to myself ... but at the time focus was on family and moving home. This year my wife surprised me with a 2017 white gold fluted bezel datejust for our 5th Yr wedding anniversary. A very special watch!!
    Keep up the great work - you're a class act, much like the datejust.

    TGV big fan here! Thanks for all of your great vids and amazing info it is greatly appreciated! I recently bought my first Rolex, and it is a Datejust 41 stainless steel slate diamond dial on jubilee bracelet. I was really considering spending the extra bucks and going for a white gold day date but decided to take a smaller step in the right direction with the datejust and have to admit I am a super happy customer. What completes my confidence in my purchase is this video. Thanks my man keep up the great work!

    Came back to this video as I've been wearing my DJ this week (as you might have seen on Snupps).. Last night I shook our bed clothes, forgetting my watch was laying on the bed.. It flew 10 feet across the room, hit a door and landed hard.. Heart sank, then I realized it a Datajust.. Not a scratch on it and no performance issues at all 24 hours later.. ROBUST is right, TGV !

    More affordable options include Fortis Terrestis, new for under $1k usd or Sinn 556 Anniversary limited edition (no date, though) for under $1500.
    The Rolex, of course, will hold its value better than most options. I just get a mental image of a flashy old banker type surrounded by the stench of cigarette smoke and greed when I see a Datejust. I don't have a problem with expensive timepieces, but that is one I could never wear and tend to form negative preconceptions about the wearer (almost to the same degree as a shiny oversized Breitling).
    Still, 2 thumbs up on the vid, for good info, great Churchill "found footage" audio, and the intro music that makes me feel like sailing. ...and saying, "Yarr!"

    A 9F quartz Grand Seiko could be your one luxury watch that you wouldn't have to service for nearly 50 years, have unparalleled dial and case finishing, +/- 10 sec a YEAR, and cost >~1400 pre-owned. Also it's not a DJ so not everyone has one.

      I agree, I have a 9F SBGX091 - which I refer to as my 'Japanese Milgauss' - and it looks and feels fantastic with any outfit in any situation.
      That being said...
      The Datejust the x-factor of being a Rolex. It embodies a luxury watch. The Grand Seiko is 'just a Seiko' in the eyes of the masses.
      You can argue that the Grand Seiko is a better timekeeping tool overall and it does look gorgeous. But the true utility of a Rolex today is that it communicates success. And that open doors for you.
      So it really depends if you like being under the radar or not.

    I would nominate the Rolex Oyster Perpetual, but feel it is too similar (essentially a no-date Datejust, right?). Instead, I choose the Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra in 38.5mm size. Just as versatile and diverse in design, and pulls from the Seamaster heritage which is just as storied as the Rolex OP heritage.

  • @rlsjunior797
    @rlsjunior797 7 років тому +1

    I agree with the versatility being hard to beat. Just got my first rolex a few weeks ago from my local AD. It's stainless smooth bezel silver dial oyster bracelet datejust 41(which some people like to confuse with the datejust 2. Proportions are completely different and it has a new movement with 72 hour power reserve). Anyway I love it!

  • @ericcecil6817
    @ericcecil6817 7 років тому +29

    Objectively, it's a beautiful and undisputed classic, but I don't think I would ever wear one. To me this watch screams Rolex even louder then the Sub, and I've always found them gaudy. But taste are not only subjective, but also subject to change, so you never know...

    • @theurbangentry
      @theurbangentry  7 років тому +10

      Thank you Eric, I agree the blingy ones can get a bit much but a smooth bezel on a brushed oyster bracelet or even a nato with a understated dial, it can be very low key IMO too.

    • @ericcecil6817

      That's a very fair point and I actually like the more subtle versions on other people who can pull them off. To me the date just is a dress watch with a hint of sport, and the explorer is a sport watch with a touch of dress. I prefer the later style, and watch. Thanks for another great video!

    • @manuel_winde
      @manuel_winde 7 років тому +3

      A vintage one on an oyster bracelet with polished bezel is cool if you don't want the blingy look I think- even AA Gill wears one. They are bulletproof, I had a 1959 bubbleback that was more robust and reliable than most modern watches I've owned

    • @ronoccc
      @ronoccc 6 років тому +1

      I love the datejust, never owned one, but I sort of understand where you are coming from with the gaudy thing, I suppose...But I think it's not the watch itself that people find 'gaudy' but the perception. In my opinion, it's a beautiful watch, a classic like you say. It's actually quite subtle, 36mm but with a hint of personality and a real presence. To me the datejust is an incredibly elegant design, even on a jubilee bracelet which I love. It's only because it's a 'Rolex' and the films it's featured in why people find it that way to me.

    • @chrisgreen764
      @chrisgreen764 5 років тому

      Gaudy, you’re right, apart the simple silver steel and white gold bezel Datejust, with a similar jubilee bracelet. My 36mm dates from 1980 and worn almost daily since.
      Most other Rolex’s are bought by people who buy a Porsche or Audi TT, in preference to a less flashy quality car, such as a Maserati or an Aston.
      Patek, AP etc shout class, like the Maserati.
      My ‘dress’ watch is a Patek Amagnetic 1960.
      However, I’ve just acquired a new blue Omega Seamaster 300 (new model) and it’s fun and I love it. Classy? Certainly not and probably won’t last the test of time, but neither is the Submariner, which I think is not a patch on the Omega and far more expensive.

  • @abl3960
    @abl3960 7 років тому +1

    I love the two-tone Oysterquartz! I only wish they would have made an automatic with that same case and bracelet.
    There is a link to Geta.. He designed the first Rolex Quartz watch: the reference 5100 A. K. A. “The Texan”!
    The very early Rolex Viceroy and Imperial Oyster case designs are clearly are the archetypes of the Oysterquartz case, and it could even be argued that Gerald Genta may have used these early Rolex designs as the styling inspiration for the AP Royal Oak.
    Thanks for another great video!

    My first luxury watch was a Rolex Datejust - stainless steel, engine-turned bezel, on a jubilee bracelet. My father gave it to me during my sophomore year in college in 1985. (My father has a vast collection and influenced my passion for watches. His first luxury watch was a Rolex Oyster Perpetual given to him by his grandmother when he graduated med school.) My nephew will inherit the Oyster Perpetual; my middle daughter now has my Datejust; I bought my oldest daughter an Air-King with a blue dial; and my youngest daughter already has her eyes on a mid-size Datejust. I will be doing a video on my datejust soon. It was my grandfathers oyster datejust 36 with jubilee bracelet. It is currently at the watch jeweler getting refurbished. It was very scratched up, lots of use. I sent it in for a new aftermarket Italian jubilee bracelet (the bracelet was already aftermarket). Im having them put new stainless steel watch hands, a new saphire crystal, a new dial with diamond hour markers, a new aftermarket 1.5ct channel set diamond bezel, a full movement service, and a full hand polish. Im very excited to get it back. This has a lot of sentimental value since it was my grandfathers. I def wanted to make it the best that I could with what it was. I know the parts are not all original Rolex but it will look very nice none the less :)

I see a lot youtubers trying to talk about things subscriber would love constantly asking for likes and subscribe. You do not do anything of this just providing great, well prepared, interesting videos. I like that a lot! Keep up!

    Hi TGV great video once again, loved your winston churchill impersonation, made me chuckle lol. As for a one watch collection, i am going for the rolex explorer 1, the 2015 version, the last of the shorties, i love the simplicity of it, 39mm, just right for my 7 and a quarter inch wrist. I am 49yrs old and don't want anything too flash. I owned a oris aquis date not long back, nice watch but it was to big and blingy lol. I should have my explorer paid of in december plus it something to pass on to my son. I have a daughter aswell and i think i may save and purchase a datejust to pass on to her, i can't give one without the other lol. I think timepieces are a thing of beauty. Keep your shows coming TGV, they are very enjoyable, thank you.

    I bought my wife a datejust. Couldn't determine which one to get her, so I decided to get her one made the year she was born. Still classy. Haven't told her the cost--she would be scared to wear it.
    Another pure class video.

    TGV,
    Was that you doing Churchill? EXCELLENT!
    I was not a Rolex fan when I first found this channel. I felt it was snobbish and overrated. Today, I am fascinated by the brand. Many are calling for innovation for the lines. For me, its what brings a distinction to the brand. My one luxury watch choice would probably be a Rolex Day Date in white gold.
    I enjoyed this topic. Ciao!

    If I could only have one luxury watch, I would keep the vintage 1943 omega that used to belong to my grandfather, just because of the sentimental value it has to me.
    I also have a quick question for you TGV, I'm considering purchasing a vintage omega constellation with the 168.017 case (preferably a gold plated one with a brown leather strap and date complication, but without the day complication). However, while researching this watch, I noticed that you have never showcased a constellation on your channel, so I was wondering, is there something you don't like about the constellation? or is it just that you haven't come across one yet?

    I met a gentleman with an all gold Datejust on my last trip to Italy. I always thought it would look tacky, and well even though it definitely wasn't discrete, I could see the charm of it.
    Personally I'd probably go for the steel with blue dial.
    When it comes to buying. I think the Sub or an Explorer are great choices. Those are the ones I'm looking for at the moment.

      It suits an Italian, South American or Arab wrist, but I can't see it on a German wrist. Something rather.... banana republic about a solid gold watch.

      that's painful to read as a German who's dream watch is the 40mm gold+white dial day date :D
      But I would be totally fine with the 40mm white gold+silver dial one ;)

    I've had my Day/Date Presidential now over 20+ years. I was checking around for a jeweler to do a lube and clean. A local AD quoted me" You can drop it off with a check for $1000.00USD and we'll send it out." That much just to glance at it. I asked the shop where I purchased it from what he suggests. Does it run fast? No. Does it run slow? No. Are there any issues? No. Leave it alone. I had the main spring replaced and full cleaning and lubrication done over 5 years ago and it's been a dream. It gets plenty of wrist time and plenty of comments. My wife had a diamond bezel put on about 10 years ago. Your right they haven't changed much cosmetically and it's definitely gone up in value. But it's a keeper. I'm looking out for a Tudor Black Shield Fast Rider black band red stitching. Chrono 24 is my favorite shopping grounds. Maybe a Mido or ultimately a Daytona 116508 Gold Black face. One can never have too many watches. Always keep, never sell. Keep on putting out your best content . I'll be watching.

    For watch lover, it's impossible to have one watch. For sake of this topic, i will keep my 7A48 Fishing Master as the One Watch. OK, a dress watch as well- the 8305 7000 Clover Seikomatic. Man, the hand brush of the Clover is out of the world. These are so luxurious that it's hard to find another who have them.

    I 100% agree, the datejust is the ideal watch. I do have one reference 116234 with silver dial, but i also have a gmt pepsi and a two line submariner and even though my sport Rolex watches are awesome, my datejust gives me a completely different feel when i wear it. Its dressy enough to make you feel sophisticated but rugged enough to wear every where. I highly recommend it especially in the 36mm size.

    Hi TGV,
    I'm new to the channel and quality watches in general, and I'm looking to buy my first mechanical watch. I liked the way the Stuhrling Executive looks but I don't understand how/why the price is so low ($150) on amazon. I've heard you say the name Stuhrling in other videos and you seem to respect their brand but I just want to make sure it is still a quality watch and not a 'fashion' watch. I love the look of skeleton movements, but the only videos on all of UA-cam about the Stuhrling Executive are very poorly produced leading me to think its a crappy watch.
    Please write back and continue to great content!

    TGV I have to correct you on the 904L part. The 904 is softer than 316 with every method of measuring hardness like vickers and hardwell. Low carbon means soft, not hard. It has more chromium etc(things that make it a stainless steel instead of just steel) which makes it much more resistant to chemicals and weather. It is also more shiny, making it more like a steel for jewelry. Plus the exclusivity, it is twice the cost and apparently the machines or tools are little different too.

    It's the perfect watch for me. SS 36mm smooth bezel roulette dial!!! A youthful mature man's watch. Flys under the radar. I've worn my DJ for 2 years. It REALLY is the one go to watch or the only watch you'll need. Plus it's a Rolex w/out showing off if it's SS. A very close second would be the Explorer 36mm a very close 2 or 3 would be a Submariner. Followed by the GMT OR Explorer II polar

    I got the Explorer as my keeper, I however use date alot at work and is the one thing I miss, I wouldn't want the date complication on the Explorer as I adore the design history, beauty, simplicity and symmetry. I am thus now looking for a date watch to join the Explorer, tried JLC Mst Ctl Date, didnt feel right, so still looking. I thus tend to agree that the DateJust is a massive contender for the one watch collection.
