Ive been really depressed lately. I couldn’t even sleep so I decided to watch something to enjoy, then at 9:15 you could see someone genuinely happy. I paused the video and laughed for like 10 minutes. Thanks TGV, I didn’t even know I needed that.
I've just literally carried out the decision to reduce my unnecessary materialistic items that I've acquired over the years. So many around me are going through hard times, health issues, the passing of loved ones, and the effect of CV19 on top of all of that, with the effect it has been having on their businesses and/or employment, left me thinking that all of the tattles acquired over the years were a guilty pleasure, nothing more, sometimes even thinking they were in bad taste due to gathering dust while people I cared about struggled with life in general. So I came to the decision that 1 watch was all I needed as opposed to the collection of Rolex I hoarded (for want of a better description). Decision made and enter stage left, the 36mm white grape Oyster Perpetual, the 1 that stayed, everything else moved on to new homes. It's still a Rolex, still something to be handed down when I eventually move on, but it's a do it all watch with that twist of being a bit different as a result of my choice of dial colour. Funny thing is, I actually don't miss the others like I thought I would. These changing times have certainly shown me what's important and what's not so important.
@Boost , you should employ some focus on your reading skills to allow them to catch up on your troll posting skills. How unsatisfying is your life that you feel the need to lash out with some passive aggressive assumptions on someones personality? If this is your way of seeking joy, you have my pity. I'll break it down for you in to easy to understand chunks you can digest between your bitter pill consumption. I based the decision to reduce my collection on so many of my close friends living through hard times at the moment ... those hard times being ill health and the passing of loved ones in a couple of cases ... I refocused on what was actually important in life ... half a dozen Rolex watches never made the list. "On top of that" ... the current pandemic has cost close friends and family to lose their jobs, and even closed down a friends business .... wearing a £30,000 Day Date in their company while they are struggling financially is poor taste at best. This has nothing to do with MSM .... it has everything to do with the reality of their situation .... a fact, NOT a feeling. So, nothing to do with reacting hysterically or otherwise to a "flu" or being fed by the MSM, I actually don't follow "the news" on any MSM anywhere ... pretty much due to the political bias being in one direction or the other as opposed to actual journalism. There you go, something else you now KNOW about me, instead of your assumptions. So, I hope I've cleared up your assumptions on who I am, why I did what I did, and, for even more clarity, if my actions make me a better person, thats for others to decide or not to, it was not an expectation, I did it for my reasons, not for the acceptance of others .... the fact that TGV had a video bestowing the virtues of 1 watch to do it all was coincidental in its timing of me actually going down that very route. Cant believe I've had to explain myself to a troll. But there you go .... as if 2020 couldn't suck anymore,
I hope you see this! I want you to know how much I appreciate you. My son and daughter--twins!--were born this year. I wanted to buy something heirloom quality within my tiny budget to share with them, but I had no idea what or how. Well, that changed today--because of your videos I decided on a watch, and I finally ordered my first, and likely only, proper watch: a hamilton khaki field auto. I know it might not seem fancy enough but it was in my budget and it hits all the history boxes I wanted. I'm so excited to help my children learn how to tell time on it as they get older. Again, thank you for your amazing videos.
Congrats on the birth of your twin! And of course on the purchase of your Hamilton. How are you liking the Hammy? I bought one myself this year -- also following the birth of my son. There's something sentimental about that, so it seems, haha. I love mine (the watch I mean, but of course my son as well): it's elegant yet rugged looking and it keeps impeccable time (+2s/d). I did have the crystal replaced, though (CrystalTimes substitute), to combat the excessive glare. This one's a keeper, and my son will have it one day!
Totally agreed. I started this hobby lusting for a modern submariner. Initially I couldn’t understand the allure the Explorer was supposed to have. After some time collecting cheaper watches and enjoying the hobby, the Explorer began to slowly grow on my preference. When the time came to buy my first Rolex I had to buy the 214270. And it’s an incredible daily watch. Quintessential classic tool watch design, understated, you can wear it with almost anything and it will look good. Absolutely accurate. Just a pleasure to wear everyday. Yes if I had to pick just one watch, that would be the Explorer. After watching this video I’d probably experiment other straps too, the idea occasionally cross my mind, but I always delay it. The oyster bracelet feels so comfortable I just forget it.
Urban Gentry was the first watch channel I subscribed to 4 years ago....other channels have also brought great content but TGV still has us collectors chuffed to bits
A number of years ago one of my customers showed up wearing a new Rolex. We started to discuss the brand as I’ve had a GMT since the 70s. He mentioned having an older Rolex he wanted to sell which turned out to be the Explorer. I was a bit disappointed when I opened the box because I was expecting the Explorer 2 but instead saw what I think was ref.1016 Explorer. The watch was in great shape but not what I was expecting… he was asking a fair price but I mentioned that it was not what I expecting. I offered to buy it for less and it became mine. I wasn’t and haven’t been wearing my GMT because I’m a bit hard on watches so I started wearing the Explorer. It didn’t attract attention and it was a bit smaller then a GMT or submariner. The lugs were quite narrow as though the case had been polished too much but in reading up on the ref.1016 they looked the same. The watch grew on me and I had also purchased a Zenith El Primero De Luca as I couldn’t find or purchase a Rolex chronograph. Unfortunately the Explorer somehow got away from me and has disappeared from sight… it may show up some day in an old pants pocket or an old suit I can’t fit into. The Explorer always occupied a place in my life and a couple of years ago for my 70th birthday, my dear wife gifted me with a hugh box containing a new Explorer. I treat this one much more carefully… Thank you for you candid discussions on timepieces.
Rest in peace Mr Connery. James bond is my favourite movie series sad to see him go 😔. On another sad note, my dad damaged his speedmaster, and has a massive repair bill to deal with. Edit: the independent shop charged $80 AUD whereas omega charged $1100 aud
Ouch. That's the sort of thing that got me to get rid of all my higher priced "luxury" watches. Bad enough that it cost $500 to service my Ball, but $700 for my Breitling?? It soon went "flip", as did my Omega and the Panerai I planned to get, well, no longer. I got rid of my Ball diver but kept the limited Ed. Ball that I had serviced, love that watch. I'll keep my Yema as it has a Sellida movement. It occurs to me, though, that my Marinemaster 300 will have to go back to Seiko for servicing for the Grand Seiko movement, but, hopefully, being Seiko, it won't have to go far? Anyone know?
RIP Sir Thomas Sean Connery The pure and simple tool watch. In today’s world that simplicity is what many people seek. Rolex stability in design clearly speaks to a lot of people. And with good reason. (Also explaining its retain of value). That being said, I personally also appreciate the technical pursuit of brands like for example Omega. I do miss a see through caseback with Rolex as I thoroughly enjoy with my Seamaster. And for your request> I went for one watch, as you guessed, the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Thanks again for a great video! Really love this channel for its brilliant analyses! You’re a master narrator
Thank you Guy, very kind. So funny you mention the casebook, I was considering having one added to my explorer. I know the purists will scoff at it, but I love the movement and I want to see it. I don't care about the resale value. As for your choice, the PO is absolute pure class!!! Best regards, TGV
@@theurbangentry Thank you and you should. I love to put my PO on the desk while working so I can enjoy the movement in action. It just makes you appreciate the craftsmanship that much more. Best regards!
@@theurbangentry You may find this interesting but watching a movement in motion for me has something of ‘mysterium tremendum et fascinans’ > the fascination but also fear of the passing of time. In my native language (Dutch/Flemish) the balance is referred to as ‘de onrust’, the unrest > the relentless passing of time, mechanically captured in the watch... ☺️
I took an age to make my choice of my first really serious luxury watch, and eventually went for the Explorer 1 39mm this year. It grows on me more each day. Thanks for the great video once again TGV. It is really great to be educated even more on the watch's history and provenance.
@@theurbangentry Absolutely, I’m in honeymoon phase with it! And I have to admit that this wonderful addition is partly your fault amico mio! Greetings from Milan and thanks for this video. Fab
@@karamhasan2159 I think the main difference is that the 114270 has superluminova. But the reason I went for it is that I found a 114270 in very good conditions. If I had found a 14270 in the same conditions and slightly cheaper probably I would have bought it.
I’ve had mine for a year now and it’s still my favorite watch! I just got an Omega speedmaster for every day wear and have the Rolex for going out or nicer occasions. It’s the perfect 2 watch collection in my opinion!
@@megadave1197 oh I’ve warn it for a year straight. But now I have the speedy sooo I’ll rotate a little more. Trust me the Rolex will still be worn a lot haha
TGV- The Explorer is the way to go! Happily bought a 114270 on your recommendation over a year ago. Purchasing this Rolex has almost made me stop wanting other watches- can you believe that? The watch can do it all; I went from scuba diving and 48hrs later in my friends wedding with the trusty Explorer on my wrist! Gotta love it!
I admit that I started falling in love with no-date watches. But if i had to pick only ONE, it would probably be a Seiko with a day date complication. First, I cannot go without day date anymore. Second, I would choose Seiko for its movement. Although sacrificing a snappy date change and the smooth sweep, I would be sure that the movement is so incredibly robust. 21600bph means less wear and tear, the magic lever for bidirecrional winding. The robust 316L and the simplicity make it a tank of a watch. 💪
Great choice, I bought an inexpensive Seiko with a 7009A movement in 1987 and it's been running fine ever since. This summer I finally serviced it for the first time, these are indestructible watches!
Yes, that's why I've come to the conclusion that the Seiko 6R15 movement is the best watch movement one can get. As for accuracy, they can be regulated to be comparable with much more expensive watches. Tired of paying thousands for watches that seem more delicate than a friggin' $400 Seiko and cost more than that just to service.
@@varanid9 My observation is that $200-$500 price band tents to offer good robustness because it can be achieved at that price. Watches above $1000 can simply sell on the fanciness (with some exceptions, mostly from Germany), while lower priced watches don't have that excuse.
@@JD-pu9rc Wearing mine now on a bracelet . I am just about to do a minor resize. Screw links and six micro adjustments. I should be done in ten mins. And it has a compass. The joy of twiddling.
I can only agree, my own 114270 is by far my favorite watch.. Btw you have the ability to bring across your passion for things you love like almost noone else I've seen. Makes it an incredible joy to watch your videos!
Thank you for being you and bringing stunning quality content. The history, the level of comprehension, the attention to details, the artistic and humanist approach required to create the context to be able to discuss of those watches is found nowhere else on UA-cam. My only watch at the moment is the SEIKO Alpinist SARB017 on a STAIB 170mm bracelet. The ''Old world'' feel of the gilded on deep green combined with the milanese mesh can't be found elsewhere (maybe the cocktail time “Old Clock''). It brings me at the beginning of the 20th century. Dimmed yellow lights, fire dying in the chimney.. I don't know, just looking at it calms me. Anyway, the 20bar WR makes the Alpinist the perfeft daily driver for me. A weird mix of explorer field/diver/dress watch :) Sorry for the bad english, french is my 1st language, took the time and wrote the best I could :) **Une superbe approche historique et humaniste témoignant d'un raffinement et d'une intelligence capable de capturer l'esprit et l'intension derrière ces merveilles d’horlogerie** Merci!
One watch as asked for; Rolex Yacht Master 40 with the Rhodium dial. I have to toss in a second one. The Rolex Explorer. I am fortunate to have purchased both brand new this year and couldn't be happier. Thanks again TGV. You are the best and a huge inspiration to me.
My “one watch” choice based on my limited personal experience is still my Sinn 104. That said, I will one day enter the luxury tier. I am not a very flashy person, so the basic tool nature of the Rolex Submariner or the Omega Seamaster 300 have always interested me; but I think I like the understated nature of the Explorer even more!
When TGV releases a video it's time for a glass of single malt whisky :) Even your videos about watches that I have no interest in (like explorer) are so well made and interesting like no other on youtube. The nice jazz in the background is a cherry on top!
Amazing visuals as usual TGV, keep up the good work. And my pick: The Rolex Explorer 14270, it might come as an obvious choice but I genuinely agree with all the points you described about the watch and I wear it everyday, in every situation and I think it reflects a certain part of my personality: refined but discreet.
Another fantastic video! I received my Explorer 39mm from my AD in August and I have to say, it’s magnificent! As for my “one watch collection” if not the Explorer then my Omega Aqua Terra would be the one! From 2016 with the vertical “teak” lines and date at 3pm 41.5mm and 150m water resistance. It’s truly a “surf and turf” watch comfortable at the beach or in the board room or casino! On bracelet, leather, rubber or nato straps! However and as an Omega fan boy I can’t believe I’m saying this, the Explorer just oozes understated class! Finally, RIP Sir Sean Connery. The first and still the best Bond!
I love the Explorer 1. If I could only have one watch to rule them all, it would prob be a toss up between that or an Omega Speedmaster. Both are strap monsters. Both go with anything.
I love the Explorer and the BB36 designs. I almost sold off my collection about a year or so ago to buy a BB36 and have that as my one watch. While the appeal of just owning one watch is certainly there for me, I know I just can't do it. I love collecting too much.
I love the Explorer 1. There is also something about the Tudor Black Bay Blue 36mm that has been calling my name. I tried one on at my AD, and with the bracelet it wears so comfortably. It also has that slow release, acquired taste, but it reminds me of a modern day Explorer. The blue dial really stands out, and looks navy in color in certain lights. It is unique enough to stand out, but can still fly under the radar with understated elegance. I'm convinced Steve McQueen would certainly throw one on with jeans if he were alive today.
He’s back in Blighty Love the idea of owning an explorer, but really not into the waiting list game and an AD judging whether I’m worthy enough to buy one 🖕
@@Chazman1946 visit Tampa lol! just no full steel subs or gmts but two tone, or solid gold you can get basically (yet not every reference..) any sports model from an AD from what ive seen
You've just put this watch on my to buy list. I actually told myself when i started watch collecting earlier this year(I only have a Seiko "5KX" and a SARB035.) that I'll never buy a rolex but now I want an explorer. TGV, thank you for all this knowledge you have shared with me about this wonderful world of watches.
LOVE the Sean Connery tribute in the beginning and the Bond connection with the Explorer because of Fleming! Hope one day i can afford an Explorer for myself
Great retrospective! I love that you mention so,e of the fewer known Rolex limited editions, ie early Subs with numerals and Space-dweller. I’ve been to that MOMA in Queens many times. Sounds like a great Mad Men display. I had no idea Don Draper wore an Explorer, that awesome!
Rest in peace, Mr Connery. An especially loved actor in my family. I have to say I couldn't help to spend a tear when I heard the news. An era is dying and it's something that is devastating for the ones that grew up in it, is not just that you become old fashioned, is that your world fades. I'm getting old! Haha. Talking about the watch, I like the Explorer, but like the rest of Rolex, not the modern one, I find it too luxury. I love the old tool Rolex. I don't like the current Rolex in general. Great episode as always, thanks!
Smith's Everest 39mm, beautiful design, great value. Nice knoock around watch and a very popular watch in the community. Almost a cult following. I have mine and it is fantastic.
They make a 39-40mm version as well. check it out on the site. You will find it. Just know when they announce a sale and get on the site immediately at that time, and you will be able to order. You have to act fast! Good luck!
I did not know that. I wish I had bought the smaller one. the 40mm is quite heavy and the bracelet is not very comfortable. I just bought the Seiko Alpinist black dial it it is incredibly comfortable. My new go to.
Agree on the "real bond watch" question. Iam a writer myself, and often, when I come to a break in the prose, chapter change etc. I find myself looking at my watch, smoking cigarettes and doodling on scrap paper. Because I don't want to completely disengage from the story to go make coffee or whatever. For me i want to be right there so as to not lose the thread. Very astute insight TGV.
My favorite watches are Hamiltons- perhaps one could say that's due to my budgetary constraints, but I love my beautiful 1968 gold plated automatic that still maintains 0-4 second error daily and cost only a bit over $100. My absolute favorite, however, is the 2012 viewmatic with no complications. It maintains 0-2 sec daily error and has one of the most beautiful faces I have ever seen. In particular, I love the way the minute and second hands reach fully to the outside perimeter of the face- something even many $10k watches fail to do, and represents one of my main points to enjoying a watch. I bought it for under $300 used, and I truly believe one would have to spend ten times as much to get a "better" watch! Though, with your eloquence, it's certainly difficult to not lust after an explorer!
I purchased my Rolex explorer 1016 in January 89 and have worn it daily ever since ( except 6 week service in 2004 ) it came with me up to Everest base camp in 2018 and never missed a beat, the perfect one watch
Bought this watch on your recommendation; absolutely loved it. Got asked more questions about it than any other piece I’ve had. Ironically traded it in, almost directly, for a new Submariner Date during the initial days of COVID19. Just needed the date and a timing function for my work; the purpose of a tool watch. Love my Submariner as well. Always appreciate your recommendations. And of course, my first watch was also a Seamaster Professional, the Brosnan, per your recommendation. Haha.
Your pure class , I work in a somewhat negative environment, watching your videos on my way up to work , granted that I'm not driving us up, relaxes me & puts me in a positive state of mind. Thank you, keep it up.
I really enjoy all your videos, can you please do something on the citizen Bullhead 1970 watch that Brad Pitt wore in the movie Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. I have this watch and would like to know a little bit more about its history, thank you!!
Rest in peace, Sir Sean Connery. A real Gentleman. The Explorer is a wonderful watch. In my collection you can find the modern version in polar white. My favorite watch is, once again, my Omega Seamaster 300m, self-winding, 1120 caliber, from 1996. Thank`s for the wonderful video ! Stay healthy ! Tom / Germany...
Great show! - best one since the explorer went to London last year. 2018 OP39 white dial is my one and only and has flown around the world with me. I love it's simplicity yet awesome credentials, and no one has recognised it as a Rolex since I bought it. Its DNA dates back to Hilary and Tenzing and beyond. But I still look at the explorer with huge appreciation. Thanks again for the awesome shows you put out TGV.
Great video and well done. As I’m approaching a milestone birthday next year the Rolex Explorer was at the top of my list and thanks to this video it’s now the only watch on the list. As for the one and only watch in my collection it’s the Omega Seamaster Professional 2001 model. I’ve worn this watch every day for almost 20 years with only two services has never missed a beat and keeps astonishing time. What I love the most is when I look at my watch and see those little scratches or marks around the bracelet, clasp or bezel is that it’s recorded my history as it’s been with me for 20 years and that one day I’ll pass this one to my children. That’s the beauty of a one watch collection!!
My version of the Rolex Explorer is my all time favorite.. my beloved Seiko SARB017 which I got as an anniversary gift. The Alpinist to me is the ultimate explorers watch, and you were the one to convinced me this years ago. Thank you TGV
I've recently purchased my grail Explorer 214270 and it is everything I wanted it to be. A classic watch with an incredible heritage and suitable for every occasion. Expertly built and a true heirloom piece. It could easily be my only watch. Cheers!
Thank you for including the tribute to Sir Sean. For my only one watch choice I'm forced to say the only luxury watch I own, which is the Seamaster Chronograph. Practicality says that a mechanical watch will outlast even an Eco-Drive watch as there are no batteries to degrade, even though it can't keep perfect time like a radio controlled Citizen Skyhawk. Nothing compares to having the Seamaster on my wrist even though I don't give it much wrist time, even whilst working at home.
Thanks so much TGV. Bruce here from Canada. I loved the tribute to Fleming, Bond and to the greatest actor who will ever play him! And thanks for adding support to my thinking: the Explorer is the only watch I truly crave! One of these days .... Meantime, I'm not suffering. My day to dayer is the Fortis Aeromaster (on their brown leather strap). Very informative. Always look forward to your excellent videos!!
Watching videos showcasing luxury like this one here motivates me to strive everyday to become successful and incredibly wealthy. But sadly i come a third world country where making money is extremely hard no matter how hard you try. Sometimes i just wish i was born in a different country, the U.S or U.K for example, things would have been much better. But i will continue to dream and put in the needed effort to succeed 🤞
I always enjoy hearing your opinions on watches as you change your perspective during this watch collecting journey. I noticed that you made several videos on the same watch, but it's always different due to your change in perspective. It's very fascinating and something that I relate to. Always enjoy your content, cheers.
I have the white dial Air King with black arabic numbers (and white gold fluted bezel) aka "Reverse Explorer", and it has all the same virtues, but with an awesome bit of added WWII history. I love it so much I want to buy as many as I can for some reason... But why? This one watch does it all. It has become a true singular companion. Enjoyed the video, TGV.
Great video. One watch collection: either my 124270 or my SLGA 019. Although I love the explorer, The lightweight, comfort and extreme accuracy of the SLGA 019 cannot be beat.
I love this video. An absolutely fantastic look into the explorer, i was never aware of it. While this may have been the choice of Fleming, i think that the choice of Submariners and Speedmasters were far superior options. The Dive Time Bezel is an absolutely crucial addition that improves their functionality as tool watches in more ways than just timing things. I would love to see more videos exploring the functionality of tool watches and how they have been used in different ways. Love your channel, best regards.
First and foremost, kudos on perhaps your best (or one of your best) all around videos yet. The detail in illuminating the pedigree of this "simple" yet elegant timepiece, the background graphics, music and attention to not only the brand but the very beautiful history of the Explorer, well, I'm just blown away. It makes me want to sell my whole collection and just pick this up. But better, I will tell my future fiance (who has been dropping hints about buying me my first Rolex) that this is what I want her to engage me with. Cheers to you, my good man. You'll certainly be invited to the wedding, where I will have the Explorer on my wrist in part due to you... P.s. The Nautilus.
Great video! I acquired a 114270 just last month and am loving it. If you don't mind me asking, what spring bar tool do you use to remove the bracelet? I noticed that the "Slot" opening where you access the spring bar tips is rather narrow. My Bergeon tool with the fine tip is still too wide to fit. Thanks!
Great vid on a great watch. The ‘one watch’ for me is the Sinn556i, I really enjoy mine and wear it out to dinner, to the office, on the beach and everything in between, it has the looks & capability for all. Keep up the great work Guvnor👍
TGV you have done it again, this was a fantastic refresh of a classic timepiece. One watch for the rest of my life hands down the Rolex Explorer. Ian Fleming would be proud 🇮🇹🇨🇦🇺🇸😊🙏👍
My favorite one watch is the 2018 Omega Seamater 300M in the Blue bezel and Chrome dial. It was become my one watch collection, and I couldn't be happier with it.
I own an explorer and your videos about the explorer make me like my watch more - I really wanted the sub but could only get the explorer because I am impatient and bought new. These are dramatic in a way that works - you validate horology!
Would love to see you do a history and review of a Rolex Air King! I've been debating on either getting a vintage ref. 5500 or a 14000, I think the 14000 could compete with the Explorer as a perfect everyday tool watch as well [as well could be a one watch collection piece (god forbid)] I'd love to hear your thoughts!
I’m total noob with watches, I started my collection July last year with my Tudor black bay SG chronograph purely for the look (and a picture of David Beckham wearing it to be honest) a watch that many here will not give much praise I think, but I liked it then. I was looking for a Rolex and I thought I would just walk into an AD and take it home hahahah I didn’t know what I was doing or anything about the process to acquire a Rolex. Two moths later I wasn’t totally satisfied and in the search for a submariner I ended up buying a Pelagos! What an amazing watch, its been my everyday watch since. Yesterday I went to get my wife a Cartier for her birthday with the same AD where I bought my Pelagos and I ended up going home with my wife’s watch and what’s now my newest and possibly my “The one” watch, “the” Rolex explorer. I still want a sub but I think my collection has everything I need for “now” I’m just wondering if The Black Bay should stay in my collection or I should sell or trade... any thoughts? Anyone? Anyways thank you the videos I really enjoy them and this one was very informative and enjoyable as always.
Only 1 watch? Me too - my Explorer I 114270 from 2006, which I bought in 2018 after 6 months of considering this or a Speedy. Your first videos on your Explorer made me seriously want this one. Anyways, now I have both :) But still, it would be my only pick if asked. And yet I have to review it on my channel - it's like something I am so much in awe and pay so much respect that I am still leaving its review on my channel "for later". Thanks for the very interesting and thorough 5-year review video, amico mio, ciao!
Thank you for providing significant UA-cam content during these trying times. It is always a pleasure to watch your reviews and hear your viewpoints. You are a man of culture with refined and informed tastes. Also, it was a fitting tribute to Sir Thomas Sean Connery, who entertained millions as an actor. He will always be the quintessential "James Bond" to me.
Great show and revisit of an absolute classic! For me, it’s been the Air King 5500 which I’ve had for “Donkey’s Years” and continue to enjoy day in and day out. Keep up the great work as always!
I had purchased a Rolex Explorer after watching your previous review of it. I have worn it everywhere both in the city and in the jungle. Yes, if I only can have one watch, no doubt, the Explorer will be it.
Yes all you said ! My first quality watch , rolex explorer model (non-hackable) , 1016 , what a companion it was for me college, grad. School and then my mad-cap exsistance , thru out. Great video no doubts !
Pascal S. The explorer II 16750 is also a good bargain today, but not any more under the radar since 1 or 2 years. But still, an amazing cheaper professional Rolex!
Good morning TGV, great you bring the Explorer back! In my opinion the Explorer I is the quintessenntial style of a toolwatch, that influenced so many watches after. Sturdy enough to be used in a rough enviroment but eelgant enough to wear it with formal attire. Great nod to Sean Connery, by the way. Best regards!
I love this, TGV! Thanks for sharing. If I had to choose one watch, it'd probably be a Rolex Oysterdate. My first watch had a date complication and I tend to use in day-to-day activities. I just like the 34mm case size and the lug-to-lug of 43mm (I have small wrists.) As always, I enjoyed your video! RIP Sir Sean Connery
This guy is the best on UA-cam, you could spend hours wasting time watching rich guys talking to Hodinkee about their watches that you could only dream of owning, or you could watch this and realise that watch collecting isn’t just for ridiculously rich people 👌
Hello TGV, great video as always! And nice tribute to Sir Sean Connery, he was one of my all-time favourite actors and the quintessential Bond. As for being a one-watch-guy, i am one and have been so for over 3 years with my Sinn 104 St Sa i, and I absolutely love it! This watch is my companion and have been with me from deserts to mountain tops to formal events and scuba diving. It’s in my personal opinion the perfect everyday watch.
I would suggest the Omega Aqua Terra 150M. Co-Axial escapement. Certified Master Chronometer, approved by METAS, resistant to magnetic fields reaching 15,000 gauss. IMHO a heck of a lot for under $6k.
I love the Explorer just for it's rich history, purpose and fascinated with some of the people associated with it, Ian Fleming, Edmund Hillary, Tenzing Norgay, Prince Harry while on Military deployment, Steve McQueen. One of those rare watches that doesn't look out of place if worn with a tux or mountaineering smock. The Explorer Is most certainly on my wish list. RIP Sir Connery.
My one watch would be a "Blue Wave" dial 1601 Datejust. I think it is the perfect combination of fun, class, and sport. You can wear it with anything in any context.
Just found your channel! The Explorer is probably my favorite, it belongs with brogues and an Aston Martin. Far out of my price range but I have a Seiko SRPE “Dress KX” due to it’s having a similar visual vibe, especially as it lives on a Connery style Bond Nato. My next watch might very well be the Lorier Falcon for much the same reason, Midcentury simple elegance.
Once again another outstanding story on your 14270. I've watched them all and have throughly enjoyed every one. I'm presently waiting for my 114270 to arrive. I am stoked 🤗! Thanks for posting, keep those great stories coming. Top notch 👌!
Love the versatility of this watch. I actually just received my Stowa marine Classic 36, the likes of which I have seen in one of your reviews. What ever became of yours?
A very classy choice, maybe the most classy. I adore the watch and brand. I sold it as I am saving up for a different German made watch, I already said too much ;-) I am considering buying another one Stowa one day. Please enjoy it a little extra more me. Thank you Nicholas, Best regards, TGV
I just got my 214270 on 12/13/2020 from a AD after waiting almost 18 months. I am very happy with my purchase. It just might be the prefect watch for me.
My Favorite watch is my "2016" Rolex Explorer, it has great accuracy and a wonderful Oyster Bracelet that always feels comfortable on the wrist. Great review. Thanks
Bravo, TGV! Excellent history of my favorite watch! I have a 214270 and a Smith's Everest. Hardly any other watches seem to be able to find time on my wrist, because this design is simply too perfect. Edit: oh, and lest I forget, if I had to whittle my collection down to a single watch, there is no question whatsoever that the Explorer stays 😊
David, what a poignant and humbling comment. Good on you sir.
This is amazing.
Good on you!
Absolutely
This one's a keeper, and my son will have it one day!
which kid are you going to pass it on? you have to be fair to both...
Best watches youtuber ever.
Urban Gentry was the first watch channel I subscribed to 4 years ago....other channels have also brought great content but TGV still has us collectors chuffed to bits
I discover him with the squale unboxing
Thank you so much my friend.
I am deeply honored.

@@theurbangentry you're welcome
I treat this one much more carefully…
Thank you for you candid discussions on timepieces.

@@varanid9 My dad found an independent repair shop that repaired it for $80
The new Oris movement has a 10 year warranty and a 5 day power reserve.
Pro trick : you can watch series on flixzone. Been using it for watching lots of of movies recently.
@@motorbloxx where in Australia? Thanks
RIP Sir Thomas Sean Connery
The pure and simple tool watch.
And for your request> I went for one watch, as you guessed, the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean
Thanks again for a great video!
Best regards,
TGV
Just bought a 114270. Perfect timing! I take a bucket of pop-corn and enjoy the video.
Congrats, you are in for a serious honeymoon!
Enjoy, thank you and welcome to the Explorer,

@@theurbangentry Absolutely, I’m in honeymoon phase with it! And I have to admit that this wonderful addition is partly your fault amico mio! Greetings from Milan and thanks for this video. Fab
Why haven’t you bought the 14270? Is the 114270 better? I am curious for the reason because I am looking at buying a 14270
@@karamhasan2159 I think the main difference is that the 114270 has superluminova. But the reason I went for it is that I found a 114270 in very good conditions. If I had found a 14270 in the same conditions and slightly cheaper probably I would have bought it.
Congrats! I'm contacting my dealer
The Explorer is _the_ watch for a gentleman on an expedition - which somehow makes it perfect for TGV ;-)
I am deeply flattered, thank you Jay, you are a gent for saying so.

Too bad the prices for it are going up. Now the average 14270 is going for nearly 6k now. Lol

Classy intro for Sir Sean. Love these deep dives. Keep it up!
The only Rolex I’d consider buying
Rolex have many lovely watches and the Date-Just is another one that does not get attention. For some weird reason watch snobs look down on them.
@@bighands69 for me it’s the cyclops and bezel. They’re god awful ugly
I’ve had mine for a year now and it’s still my favorite watch! I just got an Omega speedmaster for every day wear and have the Rolex for going out or nicer occasions. It’s the perfect 2 watch collection in my opinion!
Its crazy that you’d buy a Rolex and only wear it in nicer occasions. An explorer is a tool watch. The kind you put on and never take off.
I like the entry level spring drive as it's more accurate than 95% of watches out there and also costs 3k
I can only agree, my own 114270 is by far my favorite watch.. Btw you have the ability to bring across your passion for things you love like almost noone else I've seen. Makes it an incredible joy to watch your videos!
Picked up the new Explorer from my AD today in Cambridge. Love it
Thank you for being you and bringing stunning quality content.
A weird mix of explorer field/diver/dress watch :)
Sorry for the bad english, french is my 1st language, took the time and wrote the best I could :)
**Une superbe approche historique et humaniste témoignant d'un raffinement et d'une intelligence capable de capturer l'esprit et l'intension derrière ces merveilles d’horlogerie**
Merci!
Yes, after 25 years of owning an Explorer, it's still my best watch. Thanks for all your videos... always a smile and a positive approach.
I have no Rolexes, but if I could have only one, it would be the green Milgauss. It is such a beautiful piece to me.
Same here, on what strap do you run it Gentleman?
Sorry for my bad english i am german. I get my explorer last week :) love the watch, and your content. Keep it up TGV! Greets from germany.
When TGV releases a video it's time for a glass of single malt whisky :)
Even your videos about watches that I have no interest in (like explorer) are so well made and interesting like no other on youtube.
I just got my Rolex Explorer 214270 yesterday! Seeing TGV post this video today really makes me smile! 😊
I hear you my friend, I am very much the same way, I love collecting too.
Thank you Tommy,
Best regards,
TGV
I love the Explorer 1. There is also something about the Tudor Black Bay Blue 36mm that has been calling my name. I tried one on at my AD, and with the bracelet it wears so comfortably.
It also has that slow release, acquired taste, but it reminds me of a modern day Explorer. The blue dial really stands out, and looks navy in color in certain lights. It is unique enough to stand out, but can still fly under the radar with understated elegance.
I'm convinced Steve McQueen would certainly throw one on with jeans if he were alive today.
He’s back in Blighty
Love the idea of owning an explorer, but really not into the waiting list game and an AD judging whether I’m worthy enough to buy one 🖕
Did Rolex play that trick even on Explore 1 as I get mine from AD with no shopping record...
Is one of the shortest waiting list of Rolex, maybe the only one who require weeks and not years of waiting

The least pompous Rolex and in my opinion, the best. Outstanding video my friend.
You mean 36mm, do you?
I hope I can catch one next batch. It is indeed as difficult as the rolex to get but for another reason ;-)
Tudor Black Bay 58 is everything I need.
As a tool watch guy, I love the Explorer II with its extra complications. The original is so classic and nice though.
I had a 36mm explorer, and I loved it. My wife also loved it, so I bought the 39. Now we have his and hers. They are our only rolexes.
I don't know how I missed this one gonna have to hit that bell harder! I'm an Omega guy but have my eye on the Explorer.

Just got mine from the AD this past weekend, still need it sized but can't wait to wear it.
I just recovered emotionally from this weekend, and with just a 10 second opener, you brought it back! 😭
My old Air King pasted down to me by my father fits in this category. The Green and gold on the dial gives it a shot of life and yet is classy.
If I didn't need money or happiness I'd have a modern 116900. That watch is so stupid, I love it!
If I only had one watch, I'd choose my Tudor Black Bay 58 (black version). Superbly proportioned, goes with just about any strap, and a great design.
Great show and revisit of an absolute classic! For me, it’s been the Air King 5500 which I’ve had for “Donkey’s Years” and continue to enjoy day in and day out. Keep up the great work as always!
Thank you Tom, that has to be the most underrated Rolex, LOVE the Air King, absolute class.
Best regards,
TGV
3:46 - "And it has...uhhh...this kind of slow release charm." That's a great way to put it. It's a beautifully simple, durable watch.
You’ve certainly helped me to see the Explorer in a new light.
I bought a 214270 a couple of months back, it's my favorite watch by far.
I have watched many, many, videos about the Explorer. However, your artistic approach to the subject is amazingly rewarding to watch. Excellent work.
The best under-the-radar watch ever. A stylish, exclusive watch for real explorer. By the way, a brilliant video. Many thanks for that !
Certified Master Chronometer, approved by METAS,
resistant to magnetic fields reaching 15,000 gauss.
Hi TGV, can you tell me whats the song at 9:39? This is great !!! thanks in advance
My ultimate, go-to everyday watch is a 36mm current generation Grey dialed, smooth bezel, oyster bracelet, Datejust.
Sounds perfect 😍
Once again another outstanding story on your 14270. I've watched them all and have throughly enjoyed every one. I'm presently waiting for my 114270 to arrive. I am stoked 🤗! Thanks for posting, keep those great stories coming. Top notch 👌!
Love the versatility of this watch. I actually just received my Stowa marine Classic 36, the likes of which I have seen in one of your reviews. What ever became of yours?
A very classy choice, maybe the most classy. I adore the watch and brand. I sold it as I am saving up for a different German made watch, I already said too much ;-)
I am considering buying another one Stowa one day.
Please enjoy it a little extra more me.
Thank you Nicholas,
Best regards,
TGV
