  • La Catedral's composer, Pio Agustín Barrios, was the first South American guitar performer of international stature and, although largely self-trained as composer, the author of guitar music of outstanding worth. He is credited as the first guitarist to record music by Johann Sebastian Bach.
    His name is given in a hybrid version of his real name and a stage name he adopted in the 1930s, which was Nitsuga Mangoré. The surname was the name of a legendary chief of the Guaraní tribe; Nitsuga was Agustín spelled backward. He even appeared on concert platforms wearing a Guaraní headdress and announcing himself as "Chief Nitsuga Mangoré, the Paganini of the guitar from the jungles of Paraguay."
    He was actually from San Juan Bautista de las Misiones, Paraguay -- certainly a rural town but not a jungle. When he was 25, he left La Paz for a week-long tour of Argentina, but had such success that he stayed away for 14 years. He traveled in Brazil, Chile, and Uruguay, stopping for a while in that country for lessons with Antonio Gimenez Manjón.
    It was while he was in Uruguay that he was inspired by the Cathedral of San José in the capitol city of Montevideo to write this work, whose title means "The Cathedral."
    La Catedral is one of the most colorful and difficult works in the guitar repertoire. It originally had two movements, and is often performed in that form.
    The original opening movement, Andante Religioso, represents the reverent mood that struck the composer when he entered the cathedral and heard music of Bach being played on its organ. The writing for the guitar is remarkable in imitating the sound of that music.
    The original second movement is marked Allegro Solemne. It represents the impression of leaving the Cathedral and returning to the bustle of the street outside the building.
    In 1938, Barrios added an opening movement, "Prelude (Saudade)." The Portuguese word in the subtitle means something like "nostalgic recollection" and this movement touchingly views the 1914 version of the work as a souvenir in a musical memory book.

    @BC Hello, I would like to do my thesis on Barrios Mangorè and Bach. It was very interesting to read in the description that Barrios was the first guitarist to record Bach's music. I ask you, if possible, the source from which you took this statement so that I can write it on my thesis.

    Agustín Pío Barrios queridos y estimables señores creadores del vídeo. Agustín no fué a un tour de una semana a Argentina, el Mangoré viajó porque no tuvo éxito en su país y en el formato de tanta formalidad que conlleva ser concertista de teatro. Rodó por toda América del Sur pues era rechazado por las altas sociedades y no pudo establecerse en dichos países hasta parar en el Salvador.

    • @FunkmasterRick
      @FunkmasterRick 4 роки тому +6

      @N1gerTV The last four bars of the second movement use a known variation that is technically different from what's written on the sheet shown. Bars 9 and 10 of the third movement (just before the volta) also use a different but fairly standard variation. Bar 22, last chord, the high note shown isn't being played. There's a chunk cut from the third movement that's been faded to show it's skipped. The first chord of the second to last bar is being played as a single note instead.
      My comment, made nine months ago and probably when I was enjoying substances made legal in Canada a couple of years back, was a bit hasty in that it fails to acknowledge that all of the changes made are interpretation. They're valid, most are well known and accepted, and chances are you won't get called on them if you're doing testing for a music degree. The composer creates, the arranger translates, and the player interprets - and there is legitimate creation and change at all of these stages.

      This piece requieres very good technique for the third part and a lot of musical taste for the whole piece. There are a lot of kids who play it. But not many play it how they should, they rush and lose the sence of tempo and you can totally sence that. However I would say that this piece is from upper middle to high level, cause there are pieces clearly more difficult, but unless you play lots and lots of tech studies and have your arpegios and schales really well you shouldn't jump to thematically strong pieces.

      Go measure by measure.
      Don’t listen to someone who tells you that you are unable to learn it.
      Learn a measure.
      Learn the next measure.
      Work on putting measures together.
      Continue this process and you WILL learn this piece. It will take time.
      Use a metronome and start off slow.
      Work your way up to speed.
      You got this.
      Believe in yourself.

    Technically it is quite good. But I find her playing boring. She simply doesn't take risks. I understand she has a following, but what they hear in Ana Vidović eludes my ears. It's like she is playing the notes so perfectly that it is more a display of unbelievable sight reading than artistic interpretation.

      It Is one ofe the most important written composition for the guitar and taking risk in a piece like that means that you perfectly know what you are doing.
      And if she didn't feel like doing that, that's because she thoughts she didn't need something extra in a piece like that.

      @@pmikel63 Guitar and Lute music originally was written in tablature actually. So let's not be so condescending towards those who prefer TAB over standard notation.

    • @pmikel63
      @pmikel63 3 роки тому +4

      @@K-Viz I'm very aware of that. I went to school for it. But classical guitar music is no longer written in tablature because like Jose said in the comment above me, too much is left out when all you know is "put finger here" tab. Plus, there are many different ways to go about playing a passage of music. Tabs only tell you what the transcriber thinks is the best way to play it. It's not uncommon for me when learning a piece to find easier/efficient/more musical ways to play something than tabs suggest.
