Our New Homestead Building Project. WATCH THIS BEFORE YOU BUILD Lessons Learned & ?'s Answered

- Our New homestead building project is underway once again. In this episode, I cover the basics of venting a roof system to avoid condensation problems that lead to black mold and mildew. Also, answering some the FAQ for building your own cabin or homestead.
Homesteading off the grid and on the mountain certainly has its challenges but there's no place we'd rather live. We restored the old camp and transformed it into a cozy home for ourselves, then we cleared more land, built a workshop and greenhouse and in spite of the challenges of living on ledge -we succeeded in creating an abundant garden. Little by little we're reaching our goals of having a self sufficient homestead.

I will try to keep this as brief as I can because I like talking too much LOL just wanted to say thank you so much for you explaining things the way you do you've taught me a lot I can't read that good and it's hard for me to get information and I thank you so much for what you do and taking the time to explain stuff I never did know why they put that little thin piece of Styrofoam up on the bottom of the roof it never occurred to me why now I know it's very important so as I build my 10x12 room to live in I know that I need it and I appreciate you so much I hope you're still doing good can't wait to see your next video take care
Thank you Charles and good luck with your project :-)
Thank you so much I appreciate it and good luck on yours too
JC, you and Lori are going to have an incredible place and it'll just get better and better as you build it out. And bringing a lifetime of building experience to the build as you do, I'm sure you could not hire it done and have it turn our nearly as good as you and Lori will do it. I'm enjoying watching you work lol! Love ya my friends!
Thank you my friend and it's good to hear from you :-)
I've been forced to pay these prices for lumber for my current projects I've had going and its hitting me hard I don't believe now that these established prices will ever return to what they were , thanks .
I don't think so either.
Boss, you're the Mike Holmes of the backwoods! Keep it going!
Enjoy seeing you, Laurie (sic) and the "kids".
My wife ALWAYS knows when I’ve just another of your awesome videos …. When I start singing Frankie and the boss out walkin in the woods ….. out loud ! She just looks up and smiles. Always appreciate what your doing JC ! Take care and here’s to more warmer weather so we can bitch about the bugs ! 😂😎
The damn bugs will be here before you know it :-x
TOP JOB BOSS, UK
Is it just me or doesthe smell of fresh lumber when your building smell great!! I love that.. magical....satisfying to build things for sure
Maybe that's why I have the sawdust addiction :-/
I just had a new metal building built. I wanted a workbench in it, and didn't like having to pay the outrageous price for lumber these days. Had some oak trees in the back yard that were standing dead. I had thought about dropping them & using them for firewood. Then I got the idea to take them to a saw mill. Took 6 logs there, and had them cut to 1x6, 2x4, and 2x6. Also had him cut enough 4x4's so I could use them for the legs. He charged me $225.00 to mill them, figured out an average price for all the lumber & it cost about $2.50 per board, and after I built the workbench, I've still got a lot of left over lumber for future projects! Plus some of the lumber is spalted!
I am get n excited knowing it won’t b long the way u two work on projects. Can’t wait too see.
Amen Amen 🙏🙏🙏🕊
Appreciate the tips. We're off grid, slowly clearing land. We are working when we have money to complete jobs or buy things. We're hoping to build a small house. Living in a travel trailer right now on our property & my husband installed bubble foil under the vinyl (he use to be a flooring installer 28 years) -- I talked him into the bubble foil after watching your videos. We have so much to do & it's overwhelming! Hubs still works so we have only so much time around our property, for now. Thanks for your videos. Keep well!

Thank you Terry and God Bless :-)
Always nice to see that ecitement and smile on your face when talking about the new homestead...You and Lori will win the race. I cannot wait until the finish line. Take care both of you. Take time for a glass of wine infront of the fire. God Bless You!
Amen 🙏 Amen to that🙏🙏🕊
Thank you Lin and God Bless :-)
Dear Boss, Lori, and the fur kids
You know your “bubble foil “ and will you will NOT settle for nothing than the best quality. Nobody can trick the bubble foil master!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge... telling us about your learning experiences.
Cheering you on
👍😁🥰🍷
"Bubble Master" I like that :-D
Always love a man that uses his head
These videos are so worth re-watching, I pick something up the way you construct that shows an artist background, it's interesting.
You my friend are one talented guy.. That shed or barn is a nice looking and a nice place to put your tractor..I look forward to your videos..I've been with you for a long while..I love Frankie and Tillie...I ll bet they love this weather..God bless.. Be Safe..🇺🇸❤️🌹
Thank you Dottie and God Bless. :-)
I’m glad you stated the job can feel overwhelming at times…. And yes getting in the groove again makes all the difference.
Great 👍 episode 👏 👌 once again boss ,I really enjoy you sharing 👍 your knowledge. God bless 🙏
Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you :-)
Yup, you sound like me and my neighbors. Now that the snow has melted, we can see all the work we have to do, that we don't feel like doing. It takes awhile for the sap to rise, Boss, but it will.
Struggling my way out of hibernation...
You absolutely amaze me with your knowledge and planning that you do in all your projects. Thanks for sharing JC. BTW Lori, you are also the key to his success because you are right there digging in and working together as a team to achieve the task at hand. You both are amazing!
Thank you Chris :-)
SO true So True!! Amen 🙏 🙏🙏
Once that creative rush starts, you'll be all over it. Yes, you and Lori are blessed! But, you earned it! Looking forward to your progress.💚👍🙏
Haven't found the rush yet. Too many french toast waffles I think :e)
Looking good,be careful looks like mama knows how to use that knife.Ya I can't wait to start on my shed.
Great advice boss ,( If you can't do what you want do what you can.)
Give Lori a hug for me. Be safe
Great video!
Mama crawling around cutting tarp had me laughing....😅😅...Great "HOMESTEADING" shot......😉
All the best to you guys and the kiddos💜
At 52 seconds you just toss that tool like --- I've done this a thousand times, seems so funny to me . But it does. 😂
...maybe a few thousand times haha :-)
Very sage advice as usual....it’s interesting how the bubble wrap really took off. I remember a whole lot of people doubting your bubble wrap, now it’s the standard!
Off Grid and Bubble Foil. Its the big trend nowadays :-))
I got a Canadian Tire and a Home Depot ad on that well placed commercial break!
Glad to hear they're at least placing proper ads :-)
SHE'S A BEAUTY!...nice vid as always!.. love
I won't be building anything but I cherish the valuable information that you so kindly share and explain.
Yup! I have seen this new bubble foil in Alaska too and its no good! Looks like I have to special order Reflectix in now but its worth it! The best part of having a long checklist of things to do is the satisfaction of watching it get knocked out one by one! 😁 Venting a roof properly is worth doing multiple videos on! At least nobody could ever tell you that you should have mentioned it! 🤨
With the free shipping from most vendors, I'm now ordering the stuff from Amazon. Even our dog food comes in the mail now :-)
Morning boss hope things are good with you and the wife and not forgetting the dog it seems you have had a good life i no you have built a few cabins because i have been watching your channel now for about 3 and a half 4 years now and enjoyed every show you all keep safe now untill next time.
God Bless you folks, & the border collies. It is an amazing pleasure to watch your video's. Thanks for all you do!
Thank you :-)
You're so darn smart😚
Amazing progress!! Thanks for the video!
Thanks Mike.
Boss, I can't tell you how many fellow construction workers I know that are CLUELESS about how to vent a roof system. And when the condensation starts showing up in all it's ugly ways, they always blame it on a leaky roof. Knuckleheads!
Anyway, enjoyed the video. I like watching your construction techniques and the overall progress of a big project. Keep on keeping on, you're a great couple and make a terrific team!
Tom
Thanks Tom and I've witnessed the same scenarios as you just described. No vents in the roof and they blame the roofer...
Thank you Boss (& Mrs. Boss) and keep it coming!
Looking great Boss!! I don't care what you change your channel name to, you're always the Boss in my book, (cracks open beer and holds it high) CHEERS BOSS!
Cheers :-)
🏆🏆🏆🎓Great Educational 🎥 👍🧡God Bless America🇺🇸🐾🐾🐾🐾🕊️🕊️🕊️
God bless ☺
WOW! great VIDEO! If I may: Another advantage of the bubble foil over the roof rafters in the thermal break, isolating the cold rafters in the winter and the hot rafters in the summer from bringing their respective condition into the interior. You mentioned adding 3/4 in strapping for air space creating additional insulation.. From what I have read reflective foil must not make contact with the set rock. It needs the 3/4 inch gap.. If the sht. rock is laid right over the foil it looses its ability to reflect and becomes one with the sht. rock. Keep um coming brother!
Thank you kindly :-))
Stones need to be below the frost line. Excellent information on the roof ventilation.
Hiya Boss, Lori, Frankie, Tildy and Lady Layers 👋. Thanks for another great video Boss 👍🏻👍🏻. I appreciate the updates and the lessons learned. Stay safe beautiful people. God Bless y'all and the homestead 🙏✌❤😊🌻
Thank you Sandra and many blessings to you :-)
Thanks you my friend s see you soon kiss to the pups from wv
Hey JC, been watching for a real long time now for something like 8 or 9 years. Since I was a teenager. We spoke on FB a few times during those years. Well I saved up enough to buy myself 5 acres and a 800 sq ft house in Rhode Island. Finally out of the city and into my own little slice of the pie. Definitely a new endevor, just moved in last month.
Would love to chat some if you had the time.
Take care,
Adam L.
That's awesome Adam!!! Congrats on your dream quest :-))
We do not have almost.... almost any frost. We do have rain. Lots of it. So I use a 4 foot over hang. I know it sounds like a lot but it helps take the water away from the siding of the building. Man I am so happy I do not have to worry about frost or snow or shoveling snow. No issues with cold like that where we are.
Great project. Life is about making projects happen. Man I wish my younger days would have included framing work. I had to become self informed. Man where were you when we were building our house here in Chile?
We have to make sure all those vents are netted over to keep bats out. Bats are a real problem in roofs here. Love the bubble foil idea. We have been using this as well. We insulate our 750 liter hot water storage tank with bubble foil. We make all our own hot water with our in stove water tank /serpentine that in some states in the former USA are illegal. It really makes great hot water.
We are seeing lumber prices go up as well but most of our lumber is sourced straight from small saw mill guys.
Love the channel. Jim in Chile
Bats will get into every crack and crevice here too and so will the mice. I'll be using 1/4" hardware cloth beneath the ridge vent etc. I hate the damn mice if you haven't noticed that haha :-) Cheers :-)
@@thebossoftheswampthe bat make noise all night in the roof. Drives us batty. Jim
Here in Central Florida I use the same technique with the egg crate styrofoam to vent the roof also insulate with foil paper insulation. We have built a 10 by 20 Puppy Palace having a gambrel roof Aloft on each side with a ceiling fan in the center. Ceilings having Pine 1 by 6 tongue and groove. We air conditioner and Heat with a mr. Cool 12000 BTU. mini split
Thank you so much for taking the time to share your knowledge with us. I appreciate it. God bless.
God Bless :-)
FANtastic ! As usual ! 🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾👍👏
Thank you :-)
Thanks Boss! Very interesting 👍 update. So happy the weather is changing so you can get her done! All the Best to you and Laurie ❤️
Happy about that too :-))
Great to see ya buddy. Your one go getter you two . looking great
That makes 2 go getters :-)
Thanks boss & Lori for your video’s I enjoy all your content, I like it when you talk about life , and when you go in the bush and see images in the trees or rocks i do the same I enjoy nature so much , we have so much in common it scary we think the same thanks again boss .
It's good too see you back in the swing of things again. This was a real nice informative video so thanks for that.
Best regards to there both of you.
Many thanks!
Thanks for sharing this update. Blessings everyone
Glad you are well
It is always a great day when JC and Lori post a new video. Great job as always. Have a fantastic day, and God Bless.
Thanks so much :-)
Yay a new video!
Bubble Foil has suffered shrinkage. Just like paper towels, food, and everything else. 🤔
Excellent info about the "sunken rock"/frost heave.
Your beautiful work continues! 👏 🖖
Nothing worse than shrinking bubble foil :-D
@@thebossoftheswampWhat is the world coming to?
>Dramatic back of hand on forehead<
Paper towels have been shrinking for ten years.
Praying for everyone in Ukraine. 😔
Lookin good! Can't believe lumber prices are that high! Holy moly! I think I'd invest in a mill! The new building looks great! Keep on keepin on! God bless!
Great video I also love carpentry work you got a Lotta cool tricks and also be cool to have a skylight saying hi from northern Alberta Canada Outdoors is Mike awesome video 👋🏽👍🏽
I find some of the regular lumber yards other than the big box brands can save you big time on prices.
I find that too on certain things.
Nothing goes according to plan! But if, like you, you roll with it, eventually it will…. Your best planning, and your hard work, make it happen, JC, I love your Backwoods Logic! No one could do it better. I love watching you and Lori working together. Thanks for the videos!
I appreciate that. Thank you :-)
You speak from experience and awesome results. You know So much, you need a book! Anyway I love you!
Thank you :-)
Good ole bubble foil!!! Really appreciate you explaining things because I always learn.
Yay for bubble foil ;-)))))
Old man winter finally loosening its grip back here in Wisconsin too. Headed up to the cabin with the fellas to get a few interior walls studed up and insulation placed in the rafters. Great to be back at it even though there is a lot of work to do here too!
Good stuff as usual. Boss.
Great explanations of why you build the way you do.
Thank you for the lesson on condensation.
About 16 years ago my parent's separate garage was struck by lightning and caught fire.
Because they saw it happen and a few quick thinking measures. The damage was really limited to the attic storage space.
Antique Christmas and seasonal decorations.
I did the demo and remodeled it.
There is a warning not to use Paper Faced Insulation in the roof rafters.
If fire starts below the flame runs right up the paper.
It acts like an accelerant.
Be careful.
Be careful.
I'm pretty sure I'll be using the Roxul in the roof which is actually fireproofing insulation. It's great stuff.
Good info on insulating. Improper insulation can be a real nightmare.
Thank you :-)
I really like the tips and techniques I learn from you. Keep making me a better builder.
Hello J.C. and Lori! Just tuned in the morning and saw you uploaded an new video! I was just thinking, since you can't call your episodes, "This Old House", maybe you can name them "This New Homestead!" LOL! Always enjoy seeing your videos, and look forward to how your projects come together! You always do a great job on giving thorough explanations on why you take the steps and materials you do to make your work come out with 1st rate results! Well, I thought I would say Thank You for the video, and I'll let you get back to work, now that Spring has (offiically!) Sprung! Take care, and God Bless! ~Lou
Thank you Lou and all the best to you :-))
Three thumbs up for the builders!!((👍👍👍)) looks awesome!!😀👌
Thank you :-)
Another excellent information video 👍👍 Boss. I bought 3/8" bubble foil from Lowe's. 4' X 125'
Ill look into it. Thanks.
didn't know you got your saw from the woodchop shop only a few miles from me love your channel
As usual very informative. I know a few friends who are going to the Amish for their lumber, they are a little cheaper and yes, they do a good job. Can't wait to see what's next. Hugs to Frankie & Tildy. Blessings to you and Lori. 😊🇺🇲
That is really coming together nicely. I feel the SAME about the pricing but I've been saying it 1 1/2yrs now and am afraid I'm going to have to bite the bullet as they say. JC. you and momma are doing an outstanding job under the guidance of the furry kids I'm sure. ha ha Great explanation on what and how you're doing it. Look forward to the rest of the build and shenanigans going on. ENJOY
We bought most of the material when it dipped down to almost where it was before covid but now it's gone nutty again. I need some 2x4s but I may have to buy rough cut.
thanx boss another informative and entertaining post
Glad you enjoyed it.
I look forward to seeing you two working on the new place! Good to see you!
Be BLESSED
Good morning and Happy Spring! 🌱 -- Yes we also are not pleased with lumber prices in New Hampshire at the moment. Our 4- season back porch has been postponed yet again. You and Lori did a great job of protecting the new garage over winter. Remember the wonderful salvage yards that we used to have? There was a huge one along the Merrimack River in Manchester, just below the mill yards by CMC. I used to love going there and finding treasures at affordable prices! Stained glass, beams, bead board, windows in their casings. All sorts. Someone should be able to have a nice business, if they started a building materials salvage yard and offered reasonable prices, especially if it could offer some vintage items as well.
I built my first cabin from mostly salvaged materials. As much as i like where I'm at now, I do miss the simplicity of how things were back then. I think we will be having a lot of logs milled for the new house.
This video is so interesting! Thank you for sharing your building techniques. I'm not building anything, but I'm a carpenter's daughter and I think the interest must run in the blood.
Good building tactics there. That room should be warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer with the addition of the Reflectix layer and dead air space.
If it's not going to be supporting anything with a high PSI weight load, after compacting the crush and prior to the vapor barrier, would it help lock everything together a little more to dust the surface with some sacks of cement, dampen it and then just let it cure beneath the plastic?
The place is looking fantastic. You should (wait for it)... celebrate the unwrapping of the floor with a big steak for dinner, and extra cookies for the kids, and a second glass of vino.
I was toying with the idea of using stone dust for the final layer and possible mixing cement into it. I figure the stone dust would be easier to level and compact.
I always learn something new watching your videos. Thank you.
Started excavation work on my property in WV after holding off for a year . Hopefully lumber prices drop this summer. I also refuse to pay these prices but I really feel like I Have to get out of Jersey ASAP
Be well ,
God Bless
Best of luck with your plans :-)
It's coming along Boss! I understand what you mean about prices. But I think those prices will come down eventually. I always enjoy your videos. Lots of love to you and yours!
Thank you :-) We are taking it low and slow. haven't gotten in the groove yet :-0
Thanks alot Boss on the Bubble Wrap and tape info. Great video really good info on building in cold climate zones. All this was real good info that will help in my build this year. Thank you both and God bless you always.
Glad it was helpful! and blessings to you as well.
I bought reflectix for my attic 2 years ago and funny you were talking about it today because I’m putting it up today
It’s tight quarters in here and I can actually feel the heat from my body on my face
Great video Boss have a nice day be safe.
Thanks, you too!
as usual very very good advice you guys take it easy Bill
I remember buying 2x4x8 studs at Lowes for about $3.50. Now ...$8.25. OSB 7/16 was about $7.50 per sheet. Now ....$50.90! I'm with you. I wont buy at these outrageous prices. Everyone needs to recycle as much as they can.
We bought the price dip last November and got most of the studs for 3.26 but I wish i bought a hundred more than i did :-/
Happy spring. I've always loved your way of explaining every project you do so we out here with no knowledge can learn the correct way to do things. I'm telling you this because I had a project that needed to be done but I'm unable to do it myself and had to hire ut out. That person tried to skip steps, they bought all the materials with my money but tried to skip putting them in place (I learned he likes to return the "unused" parts for cash in his pocket), thanks to your videos and instructions I noticed my project wasn't being done properly and told him he better do it right as I already took pix of the materials and how he wasn't using them, I'd post his shoddy work on all social media sites! Well he went back and did it right and even ended up charging me less than the estimate. Now I've posted that along as well as his shoddy practices. The work turned out very well and I posted that also. He just has to be watched so as not to cheat you. All this was made possible by watching your videos so from the bottom of my heart I thank you and Lori for all the information you give us. Hugs and treats for Franky and Tildy, how are the pups doing?
That's great to hear and thanks for sharing this. Please share my channel with others that may benefit from it.
The pups are great :c)~
Awesome project! Thanks for going over the details, and showing how you use the reflectix
Glad you enjoyed it!
Love the way you build Boss. 👍👍💚
Thank you :-)
Looks great so far!!!!!! Question - has that bubble foil always been that expensive? Take care.
Its gone up about 10 bucks but very worth it.
Just knew you would have bubble foil somewhere in that roof, sure looks good.
Gotta love it :-)
Always a good time Boss, and good sound advice. Cheers!
Cheers :-)
Wisdom from experience. Every time I think I understand different aspects of a home building process something comes along and knocks me for a loop. You often point out something that I had not considered as a potential problem (down the line or years later). Your insight is invaluable.
See I have been contemplating where my next home is going to be or look like. I currently live in a townhouse community. Something I had not considered before buying this property is all the blasted red tape and decisions by the HOA that would affect my personal enjoyment of where I live.
HOA fees have doubled since I moved here 19 years ago. As it stands now that is now almost 2K that is gone. No interest and money that I cannot use. I think I can better use that money then they can. It will mean that I will have to do more house maintenance but I can minimize that to a certain degree by making better ground cover decisions. I know that I will be getting a late start on this I will turn 67 in July. But living in a smaller community may not have all the bells and whistles that a larger city has to offer but then the tax base doesn't have to be as large too. More of my money going to someone else's pocket.
Best of luck with your plans.
Great video. I just did the ridge vents on my new cabin up here in Alaska. Friends thought me silly for it but I understand what can happen with out it.
Great tips as always, everything is looking great, you do really fine work!
Thank you :-)
Loved the video! 💖
Thank you!!
Excellent video, thanks !!!!
Great job, thank you!
Thank you
Thanks for the video boss👍
You bet :-)
