Build was great to watch. Couple of questions. Why not any insulation between your logs? Why no insulation in cabin? Why not burn underside of deck/porch since insects and dampness collect there? The end result was amazing. I hope it lasts!!

I have watched something like 100 videos of off-grid cabin builds, from start to finish, and I think this one ranks as my favorite of all!!! I absolutely love your "logs." Very reminiscent of the system of locking logs in Finland, with the exception of your logs being a composite of 3 boards, rather than 1 log. This really inspires me to try to do this myself. May you be blessed with years of tranquil moments in your wonderful cabin.

Dont give up! Best of luck and I just turned 65 last week. Im also itching to get a mountain lot and similar build. I did it before at 30 years old, but my mistake was building it on a friend’s land. They said I could stay ten years, but after seeing how beautifully it was built, gave me three months to move on. … so they could move in. Live and learn. I just sold our ocean cruising sailboat Dec 31st, and hope to buy land, build cabin, and move in before Dec 31st this year. You know, his small timbers will save our backs.

I live in the north of Scotland and my home is a log cabin made from Douglas fir. It’s like the three pieces screwed and glued at the start of this video but it’s made by carved long logs. It went together like Lego. We built in 2004 and it still looks lovely. The log walls are gorgeous inside. They’re sprayed with a clear fireproofing agent that will let naked flame burn for 2 hours without damaging the wood….we had to get that in order to get mortgage and insurance.

@@roberttaylor8261 yeah I was thinking about the electrical, you could leave a gap in the middle 2x8 for wiring when your building it though but hard to go back and do for sure. You have crafted a beautiful cabin, very talented young man. We just moved into ours and built on a bedroom and bathroom. It is 20x36 now and our retirement home. The first build was 20x20 total cost 8,600. then when building supplies were at the highest the 20x16 cost 21,000. Unfortunately we had sold the farm and had no choice. We lived in the cabin with no running water for 5 months. At 73 and 75 we saw it as an adventure. Enjoy your cabin for many years to come

I am glad to see others can show that necessity can overcome many adversities. I turn 75 in a few months and plan on building and moving to a log structure as I sold my house, and thought apartment living would see me out. But, with rent eating up a good portion of my modest income, and other expenses reducing my cash reserves from the sale of my house, I can see I need to find a cheaper place to live. A 20 x 24 log cabin is in my plans, and it will be built using this man's fantastic design as I can't afford to have someone build me one. This is a great alternative and, although I am sure I will have many, many aches and pains along the way and all my old injuries will be screaming at me to quit, I will just look forward to sitting on my front porch in the woods, or in front of a cozy wood fire on a cold winter night and thank God he gave me the strength to finish. I lived for over a year with a composting toilet, and hauling water. Seeing that others in my age group have done it will inspire me. Thank you.

This is awesome! Thank you for sharing your journey on this venture.
The one thing I would’ve done after putting down the subfloor, was building up a higher rim around the exterior in which the grooves lay in. That way I could build up the subfloor with bubble foil insulation on the floor and provide additional insulation. Strips on that and then flooring nailed to the strips, would allow for a warmer floor.
We always see things after the fact, don’t we? You should draw plans and market them. This is a realistic enterprise for anyone to work at and make reality. I’d love to build this for my family.

I have seen several cabin build videos, I must say that this is quite different than ANYTHING I've seen before. Why I've never seen this method before is beyond me too.
This method is simple and straight forward, seals, between members well, is about 6 inches thick and assembly is also simple and straight forward.
Your floor plan is similar to one I found in an old book called Your Cabin in the Woods by a man named Conrad Meineke, in 1946. He showed several building methods. Conrad would be quite proud of you and your ingenuity. I still pull out that book from time to time and read it again. I first found and read this book in 1976.

This video series is a favorite of mine, and perhaps my favorite of all time when it comes to building off grid. For all of those reading this.... It is possible to build this style of building as a home, however... because codes vary across the country not all states will approve this unless you have certified engineer plans and a full set of approved blue prints available for most counties. Also, there will have to be modifications and allowances for the mechanical systems if they are to get your plans approved. The cost for model home using this method will climb to about $205 per sqft however, due to inflation, mechanical systems required, and multiple other costs to consider. Still I can see where this is an excellent value, especially if you have your own land and timber and can easily mill it down to save even more money. Thank you for making the videos, it was a pleasure to watch you work on this project.

Got a half century of carpentry behind me, so watching you work was a combination of curiosity & disapproval, but I was also the only guy in class who picked apart Frank Loyd Wright builds. That said, I'm more critical of your methods (seen too many folks seriously hurt from things as simple as using a 5-gal. bucket to stand on) than anything else. The flaming is genius, and more people should be doing it. Beats hell out'a poisonous treated crap, AND it's WAAAY cheaper, so major kudos for that. Your house, so whatever you like is fine, but I wanted to choke ya when I saw you dumping stuff on that metal. I knew right away what was to follow, and that was a cringey moment since it's just about aesthetics and I'm a Bauhaus kinda guy, but you built for you, so ultimately, who gives a rat fart what I think. 😉
I just finished a 704 sq. ft. balloon framed off grid retreat for one of my kids; 16'x24' w/ a 16'x20' stand up loft that's basically a big 2 bedroom "tiny house" w/ a full bath & kitchen. It's a super insulated air-tight box that could be heated w/ a literal candle or two, but you'd also probably be asphyxiated, so it uses solar heated water instead. Including the solar array, storage Lithium batteries, an incinerating toilet, and a pressurized rainwater harvesting system that includes hyper-filtration that can make anything safe. Total material cost, including an 8'x16' covered front porch w/ winter Solexx storm panels and an attached 16' x24' Solexx greenhouse was a little under $34k, and it costs literally nothing to live in. Actually, with a small garden, their fruit trees, rabbits, chickens and goats, they can pretty much get by on next to nothing.
Point being, there are still lots of ways to provide yourself w/ affordable shelter, and ya don't need to be a pro to do it, although I would recommend a copy of Modern Carpentry as a primer.
My friend, you have definitely constructed a bear proof cabin, that's for sure, and it may even survive a couple of dead limb strikes from the trees in your yard, so Bravo. And again, as long as the customer's happy, that's all that really matters. 🙂

@@TheOffGridExperience in that case you get two extra biscuits. Quite an undertaking working alone, but I say again, that is also where being safe becomes even more important. There are eight million ways to die in the woods, and another 8 or 10 when building. I also used to be a USAF SERE Instructor, so survival medicine (not 1st aid that stabilizes ya till help arrives, but how to patch yourself up so you can walk out of the woods) was part of my repetoire. Raised in construction, ranching & wilderness, and even with all of that I still managed to mangle and nearly kill myself probably a hundred times. Pretty much every time it was something simple and stupid; working past dusk w/o lights, blade or bit breaks w/ me leaning on it, stepping between rafters & hammer hooked on one pulling me away from what I was stepping onto & head first I went. Air nailing a band board up last thing when nail turned and nailed my finger thru to a joist. Stepped on doe skin bark and almost broke my neck, piece of trash caught in my drywall stilts and sent me face plantin'. Like I said, lots of experience I'd rather not see others repeat. 😉

The idea itself was brilliant, but your presentation and a great narrating voice just sends it over the top. It feels like you go the extra mile to make sure that anyone who wants to try it for themselves has pretty much all the visual aid they would need. Quick question- you mentioned you bought the 2x8's before the price fleecing happened- how did you store them to keep from warping and twisting? All I have within an hour from me is Lowes, and I swear their stuff will twist up on the ride home!
