As someone who lives on several acres connected to the grid (in hurricane country no less), one learns the hard way to be prepared some times. An ice storm that took out power for a week revealed how useless a fireplace was, so in went a wood stove. The a hurricane that wiped out power for 3 weeks led to a portable, then a whole house generator. And lordy they both are noisy! Now I have a stocked freezer & 12V frig plus solar lights & lanterns. The wood shed stays full year round. None of this is easy & none of it was cheap. It’s the price I pay for the life I choose to live. Enjoy yours! 🤗

I was born in 1951 everyone was living off grid doesn't matter if you had electric or not, we hand pumped and carried our water, we walked 50' down a sidewalk to the "bathroom" we cooked and heated on a wood stove, 5 to 7 cord a year, in the winter we would cut ice from the creek, go the neighbors and buy 2 pints of cream (right out of the cow) and churn us some ice cream on the weekends, if you weren't born during a winter month there was no ice cream your birthday, I was born in April,
I still live off the land and thank our maker every time I take one of his beautiful animals.
I watched your channel for a while, you are a honest soul, no gimmicks thank you for using some of your time to make the videos

Life is always full of surprises and some not wanted or welcome but that's the way it is. You're a very wise and interesting man and I really enjoy all of your videos. It's beautiful and peaceful there. Good luck again on whatever you do and I hope you both will continue sharing your lives and journey with us. Thanks for sharing! God Bless 💖

Always love watching your videos. Such a big chunk of peace in this crazy world. I can't believe it's been 6 years since you two moved up to the mountain! Where does the time go and you guys have done so much! You're so right about living without power if you're used to living with it. I tell people to get accustomed to living without power gradually by stop using power stuff as much as possible. With the power grid being nuts around the US and everywhere really, one doesn't know when they could lose power. That view from the new place is going to be to die for! I so love living amongst trees all year round. Beautiful in the winter covered with snow too. I'm excited about your coming spice business!

❤ BOB ⚠️. Dont get bored. As I mentioned before. We had so much fun off grid, cooking chicken over an open fire on the tri-pod. Little beer, little music, lot’s of memories until,,, the ‘CABIN’ ⚠️ MICROWAVE OVEN, STOVE, telephone, fridge, TV. Just like down state in Michigan. We stoped using the property out of boredom. May as well be comfortable at home. Why have two similar homes? It was ruined with the electrical appliances and all the modern conveniences. Soon it wasn’t a cabin anymore and the kids stopped coming up. When they did come up at first, they stayed in their rooms. No More CAMP FIRES. : (

I discovered this channel last week when searching for the best way(s) to insulate the floor of a cabin built on piers. I found two or three videos of yours on your use of Reflectix on the skirt of the cabin and under the floors and showed it to my husband. We are designing an off-grid cabin to be built on newly-acquired land in a village not far from Washington, NH (the town where we REALLY wanted to buy in, but that didn't pan out...). We are no strangers to the "miracle of Reflectix" having built a tiny home (off-grid) on wheels, much of it insulated with the stuff I fondly call "metallic bubble-wrap". Tonight I was searching for info on dry wells and up popped your channel again. I decided I ought to subscribe and for some hours now I have been binge-watching. 😃 What a wealth of knowledge! There is so much that you have shared that will be helpful to us for our gradual build. (If we are in there a year from now I will count us fortunate!).

Bought a house with a one of a kind, fantastic view but up a thousand feet above the valley floor, and on the north side of a steep hill. After a couple of years you get used to the view but you never get used to the extra month of winter every, single, year. Also bought it in the winter under 3 feet of snow. The garbage around the place in the spring was 3 full pickup loads. Nope nope, nope, won't make those mistakes again.

Really awesome man. My channel name is Offgrid but I'm still in hybrid mode. Partially offgrid and partially ongrid. Im on a break from UA-cam right now, but Im getting back online. The goal for me is to be self reliant if I need to. In an emergency situation, I don't need power. But in normal mode it makes life easier to be connected. Using the grid as a big battery right now. Getting ready to install a big 44 kwh battery bank to my 14kw solar system. Have a great weekend man. Greetings from Andreas in Sweden

Exactly right I remember my husband and I watching a couple for a few months when we first got married. And they seem to be happy then eventually about a year after me and my husband are married my husband shared with me the information that him and his wife broke up the people on UA-cam did.
And the thing was she thought it was all a fantasy world, she thought it was only for show and then they would be off UA-cam and live like most people do. Like the fake TV shows do.
She did not realize that it was not easy and difficult. She could not make it work with her husband so the broke up. She moved back to the city and he stayed there. I really felt bad for him.

Hi JC- I can't believe I MISSED this video! You must have been laughing last weekend, when I made mentioned that we are now set up to live off grid, but are currently living HYBRID. Thanks for this video. Having lived off grid prior, we have settled into a conpromise. Yes I would buy a propane refrigerator, freezer, etc, if we can no longer afford electricity.....because I love living in a camping lifestyle, but with comforts. I am pleased to hear you are getting back into your spice business. I will definitely buy from you and Lori. You sent me a sampler box of your spices, rubs and dip way back in 2004? They were wonderful!
Of course in your most recent video you are making noises that you may " about face" and this is ok if that is where your dreams eventually lie. But a part of me hopes you will hang on to this new property as a Base Camp.

Your attitude is solid if it’s not right put it on the shelve and do something else. That’s a happy life.
If your always scrambling to make things happen so you can eat, sleep and stay warm your not really living your surviving.
Sounds like your going to start living and that is a great way to be.

We had an ice storm that took out our power and it took a month to get it back on. We always keep generators and non-ethenol gas on hand. Plus, if we have an extended outage we have a solar powered deep well pump we can utilize.

Whatever you do Dont put the smart meter on your House.
Those are not the analog meters we had years ago. Nowadays they can burn houses down and not burn any trees. Its happened in my rural area a few times last year. We also saw this occur in Paradise CA. Be Cautious ⚠️

My off grid cabin is very similar to your spice barn. That said where I live grid power is 1/4 mile away. With grid power comes an address v/s simple parcel#. With an address and grid power also comes property tax increases, garbage pickup tax, square foot tax, building inspections regulation to no end. But also here AG buildings are tax exempt, I boil maple sap in my cabin/sugar shack every spring. Sugarshacks are AG exempt from taxes. Long story short as long as I use no cement or permanant footings the camp land is taxes as vacant rural rate...God bless your progress!!

In your view what does it mean to be off grid?
I live on an island in the Southern Bahamas where there is 3 homes all on solar power. I uses a water Collection system to support the 3 homes plus a swimming pool and a garden and the chickens. My home is high on a hill all electric + AC where I have Dish satellite TV and Internet from Starlink. Cell service from the next island over. Do you consider this off the grid? I am over 25 miles line of site to any electrical power. If I need groceries I don’t have stocked up I have to take a boat to the next island up above me nearly an hour ride one way. I have been amazed at what I have been able to grow in my garden down here in this hot humid climate. People always ask me about crime? There are no doors that lock here. The biggest crime are the little spider monkeys getting into the bird feeders and the rooster starts crowing at about 4:30. So I get up and read my Bible.
