  • In memory of my late wife, Cheryl 1967 - 2018...... Party at our church kitchen/hospitality room.
    A fond memory as 1999 becomes 2000. Y2K, the world didn't end, the world's computers didn't all shut down sending us into the stone age... Oh the doomsday cults, possible worst-case scenarios, and whispers of "what-ifs" from the years building up to the rolling of '99 to 2000. We had always only known decades by the 2 digit year, 70's, 80s, 90's. What were we going to call the 2000's? The zeros? The oh's, double Oh's? One thing for sure. I'll never have that much hair again.

    I spent that New Year’s Eve on the town as a single guy. Not a good night. The next day, I met a woman at a sports bar, watching our college football team play in a bowl game. We are still married today, April 17, 2024 🙂
    She looks very similar to your wife. Petite, dark hair in the same style, classy dresser and an outstanding human being. Sorry for your loss, sir.

    Wow. Time hits like a sledge, dont it? My best high school friends in the basement playing Tony hawk, waiting for Y2K with Dick Clark on the second TV, ringing out the final year of the millennium. We celebrated even harder when the world didn't end!
    I got my first apartment on a coffee shop salary. Everyone had a black book and carried change for the payphone. MTV still played music and you had to leave the house to actually find something new. I miss you, 20th Century!!!

    I'm from '98 so I like asking older adults what new year's of 1999 was like. Oddly enough, nobody I ask remembers how it was. You'd think they would remember seeing how it was the turn of the century into a whole new set of thousands. The 1000s were not a quiet time and now we were flipping over to the big 2000s. So for that reason, seeing this video is a special treat. This is partying like it's 1999

    • @davewelchTX83

      I thought it was fascinating and saved newspapers from the next day, the empty bottle of champagne and a few other items. The biggest thing was the buildup to that moment. Years spent focused on getting computers converted to a 4 digit year. We always referred to the year as 2 digits for my whole life leading up to that point. No one ever said 1983, 1995. It was simply 83. Or 95. Computers only had 2 digit dates since their invention because memory and storage capacity was so limited so programmers saved that space and no one used 4 digits for the year anyway. My wife was a software tester and she was heavily involved in project teams working on the conversation since 94 or 95. Many corporations were still using main frames from the 60s in the mid 90s. So this night all that build up was over. It took me 6 months to get used to writing 2000 for the date. This party was church friends so we went home after and toasted with champagne.

    • @tm3m
      @tm3m Місяць тому +7

      I remember it a bit, the Y2K paranoia--people worried power plants and computers would all stop running, and the quiet sigh of relief afterwards. the energy and excitement of people wondering what will come next in the next 1000 years, people feeling like they were lucky to be alive when the big number flips over.

    • @SirChristian100

      The 1999s and before ment, more time outside! Computers only really took off in that decade, internet even later. Most people were not using Computers, beside us Nerds ^^ So most people spent free time outside, in the sun! Dont forget: No smartphones! Only TV and Radio. I came from the former DDR, so even telefone was a thing of the future. If you wanted to meet friends, you had to run over to their house and ask them in person if they wanted to.
      Overall, RL was more important than madeup bullshit online. The world was a clean place, at least for us in the west lol
      Oh and everyone born after 2000 is not a real human, yet ^^

    • @SirChristian100
      @SirChristian100 Місяць тому +1

      Also, the end of 1000 years ment, many doomcults. We all were not sure if we would REALLY survive 2000, in case all that electronic stuff would do stop to exist. Like blackouts ^^ Deathmetal rose in those last 10 - 20 years, look at Norway for example. Overall the feeling of the end of an era, and maybe of a lot of future!

    • @Harry-fk5of
      @Harry-fk5of Місяць тому

      There was a definite shift in energy, people were buzzing around and it felt like the dawn of a new era. The internet at that time was special, it felt exciting to be able to talk to people on the other side of the world and gain access to websites and forums, to connect with people in a new way (although that was happening in the late 90's too).

      @DaBoomerYe I somewhat agree but also disagree. It's a pipe dream to get enough people to do that to the point it feels like the world around us is like it was then. But that being said you've essentially made a more modern version of the Amish lol.
      Unfortunately though it's not just the things you mention. You cannot undo 20+ years of military industrial complex control and corruption or political devils and death merchants running this country (and the world) into the dirt.
      When the Soviet Union fell a massive tension was alleviated. It felt like a time of peace despite the conflicts we were getting involved with in the middle east. 911 really brought that tension back and crushed stability. Then you have stuff like 2007 crash/bail outs, and to a lesser extent Occupy Wallstreet (people don't truly realize the implications of what happened there).
      The 90s was a brief period where it felt like "maybe everything is going to be alright". Now it just feels like Cold War volume 2.

    It's a good thing to see the exuberance and hopes of people who didn't know the misfortune of the 2000s.
    People born after 9/11 or the Recession will still suffer the effects of them. There's a unity in struggle that crosses generational gaps.
    Videos like this remind people that times were better, and it's not too late to restore prosperity like the 90s. Young people look back to the past all the time--increasingly so. You see it in art, memes, music, and fashion. They long for the 90s as much as 90s kids do.
    I really do think a shift for the good is brewing. People aren't accepting media's sensationalism anymore. They're educating themselves and each other in every field. They're tired of isolation and finding new and old ways to make meaningful connections.
    Your memories are never gone; just look at the strangers who also love your wife. Maybe it's my late-night emotions, but this video made me hopeful.
