I think like how you mentioned the fall damage missing from 2018 the new games would benefit from some consequences as a result of messing up whilst web swinging. You can literally leap from the highest point in the city, not touch a button and you'll automatically land safely. Having some element of danger (even slight) could make a huge difference to the thrill of traversal. Thanks Burbacks!
Dude I kept saying the fall damage thing and everyone I knew said I was stupid. I’m so glad someone else gets how important it is to exciting web swinging
If I remember correctly Spider-Man 2 also had a manual web slinging setting which enabled you to control his left and right hands individually. It was more immersive and allowed you to suspend yourself between two buildings which my 10 year old self thought was sooooo cool
I still love that. It takes time to master but once you do, the immersion is so awesome. I wish they had done something like that in Spiderman 2018. Hopefully the newer Spiderman 2 game* Can allow that option.
See, that's how I always remembered the controls being, but I wasn't sure, cause the last time I played it was probably 15 years ago. I miss this game though, it was definitely one of my favorites as a kid.
Agreed, it's a lot more like a casual discussion than just a singular voice. And while both approaches are great, it really makes this feel like an organic, relaxing conversation with a unique feel.

The Spider-Man game that came out the next year (Ultimate Spider-Man) has a moment during the Venom tutorial where it instructs you to eat a child to regain some health. That child is holding a balloon. They knew.
To me, Spider-Man 2 is the master’s version of web swinging. The velocity, the speed, the different tricks you can do, and I remember a really handy technique where if you are going full speed and start wall sprinting just as you are about to go past a building, you go FLYING at an insane speed. Very helpful when doing the pizza deliveries or Daily Bugle assignments. The physics are not a problem at all once you master the swinging. I liked PS4’s swinging, but it was just so barebones and just doesn’t have that satisfying speed. Also, SM2 lets you shoot 2 webs out at the same time, so it’s already a winner for me. Oh yeah. SM2 also has Bruce Campbell. Easy win.
Yes, this! Shooting two webs at the same time was so much fun. I loved how you could released one slightly before the other to influence your direction mid-air. It was one of the first thing I check in the Ps4 version and quickly felt like 'oh snap, they didn't do the two web thing'. For all the good stuff they come up with to make the swinging smoother and fun, it quickly felt like it's lacking depth and controls. Being able to speed up during a swing was also very fun and missing in the new game definitely. I really hope they go further in the next game, add more depth and subtilties in the control. They have a great foundation to build upon.

It smooths everything out and literally won't let you mess up. Swinging in Spider-man 2 is difficult, but SO REWARDING. And you can go significantly faster with enough skill.
You approached the swinging the wrong way. The mastery of swinging is how quickly you can get from point A to point B. When you can cover hundreds of feet in mere seconds, it's definitely rewarding.
the part where he says that you can speed up midswing is kind of dumb physics wise. I think PS4 handles it better cause you have to time your swings to gain momentum well. just pressing a button midswing to increase speed? nah.

Still holds up imo. I bought a new PS2 controller and started playing PS2 Spider-Man 2 religiously again for about a month now. I still love it as I did in the day. I actually don’t like the old Battlefront II as much as EAs if I’m being honest (that’s really unpopular to say). I agree however for the Spider-Man sequel having a halfway automation is perfect. BUT Swinging is still better in the old game for some odd reason. Even colliding into buildings is somewhat okay (although annoying after some time) because it makes the moments where you easily slip through a tricky building super satisfying. In the new game everything is made to be “satisfying” and that makes what should be a challenge, “unsatisfying.” It’s very hard to explain. GOOD SHIT. I wish there were more videos about this on UA-cam, I put an ungodly amount of hours into this game as a kid. I played that game the day before to prepare myself for Spider-Man PS4. It's one of those games I've played so many times I can pretty much finish it in one sitting. It certainly holds up to this day. Dated? Absolutely. Amazing or even spectacular? Absolutely!
12:08 Isn’t that the fun of mastering the game? Just like Mario 64, the weird physics is what makes you comeback and the sensation of movement, running in the walls while you are maintaining your full speed is just something that I haven’t feel in a game since ‘04
Exactly. It’s like playing a Skate game without being able to fall off the skateboard. Not having the ability to fail negates the hype of successfully cooling off a stylish trick. It may be fun at first but it will make things boring relatively fast and kill the replayabilty of the game. There’s a reason why there is a dedicated speed running community still playing Spider-Man 2 almost 20 later years later. The web swinging has a lot of hidden depth to it that wasn’t even apparent to me as a kid and the skill ceiling is high if you want it to be. I’m not saying there isn’t a dedicated speed running community surrounding 2018 Spider-Man but web swinging doesn’t play a pretty big role at all in the runs, which makes it less interesting to watch. There are plenty of people that love the web swinging as it is however, including me, so they should add difficulty levels to swinging, just like Spider-Man 2 did. That’s a good way to make it accessible to everyone while keeping a high ceiling for dedicated players.
I quote the goons from this game to this day and I can't help it... I'll be in the car with my brother and suddenly look at him and say "I'm gonna be the guy that beat SPIDAMAN" in a bad new york accent. Great video! The duel narration works great and feels really natural!
This is my favorite game of all time! It started my video game collecting hobby! Still have a shrine to all the different copies I have of this game. Spider-Man ps4 is something I love even more because of this game.
I still remember everything so clearly from when this game out. I was 10 years old. I watched the trailer and my mind was blown when I saw you could finally go on the ground AND you could go anywhere (open world). I waited for what seemed like months for the game to be delivered. When it arrived, I ran upstairs to get the PS2 which I shared with my older brother, only to find what he had broken it from constantly leaving it running all night because he liked sleeping to the ambience sounds. I lost my shit. My parents felt so bad that they bought me my own PS2 the same day and I played the game for hours and hours. The game is a masterpiece. It was such a huge upgrade from the Spiderman games that came before it.
I almost beat the game a few months ago for the first time in years and it was still a great game. I love when the game turns to night time mode as you play through the story and it's not a bad campaign at all for a movie game. If you have a ps2 or a pc its definitely worth a try
I was 15 when Spider-Man 2 came out and it blew my mind at the time as well. I remember after beating the game I would just grapple enemies and swing up to the top of the ESB and do the piledriverr move on them from the radio tower on the top down to street level. Peter Parker really got sadistic.
When you guys were talking about that bar scene in Spiuder-Man 3, it reminded me of when I saw that movie in theatrs when I was younger and the instant Peter turns around and hits MJ, some guy in the theater, without missing a beat, quickly stood up and yelled "YES" incredibly loud while pumping his fists as if somehow victorious
I love these Burback videos, the back and forth narration is really nice and engaging - I've never playing a Spiderman game and I was interested the whole time :)
There's a lot to be desired in spider man 2 by today's standards, but in terms of the web swinging, its still unmatched in the feel and satisfaction of the physics based web swinging. The satisfaction when you finally figure out the fastest route to complete all of the pizza missions or the hard difficulty races around the city is almost euphoric
This is one of my all time favorite games, I revisited it last year when quarantine hit and I actually listened to your podcast while playing it! Thanks for making this.
Great work guys, can’t wait to see what you do next as I’m sure the video quality will continue to improve. One suggestion would be to add the chapters to the UA-cam player, so you can jump around and see where you are in the video.
Loved this game, used to play it all the time on the Gamecube. I loved the webswinging in that game and would just swing around the city for hours. Really liked the combat system too, you could get some great combos going.
so spiderman ps4 was the first spider man game I've played and I was ADDICTED to it! i had no clue about the other ones and hearing yall talk about them so nostalgically really made me appreciate the new one even more. but yeah, older one does look like shit

I need there to be more content like this all over youtube now. please keep this up, or continue something similar stylistically, becuase i'll watch it all forever.
I don’t really remember Spider-Man 2(PS2) very well, but Spider-Man 3(PS2) was something I loved playing as a kid nonstop, I remember being able to trigger the black suit and it had crazy combos and Shit my god it was so good. Great vid boys, been here since day one, watching you grow is great. Keep grindin!
Spider-Man 2 was the first game that blew my mind. The grabbing enemy’s. Tying them to light poles. Saving people on the ships in the ocean. The kids who’s balloon flies away. Man I wish I could go back
I am stoked that you guys did a video on this! A couple years ago, I bought a PS2 and about 6 games that I remember playing, had beaten, or had not and still wanted to all those years later. Spiderman 2 was one that I had beaten and remembered so fondly! Unlike its successor... but we won't speak of such things. When I plugged in the PS2 and put in the SPM2 disc and started it up I felt as if my whole childhood had just crumbled to an extant. I thought to myself: "How is it that this game looks NOTHING like I remember it looking?!" And thus I could not longer stand to play it. I seriously felt upset, and like I had much to say about it, but no one to say it too. Nor did I really know how to say it! But you guys did all the talking for me! Thanks! I absolutely agree 100% with everything you guys brought out. But there is just ONE swinging mechanic you both forgot to mention that I remember the most fondly: The "Slingshot." Pressing L2 and R2 at the exact same time would enable Peter to attach a web to a building on his left, one on his right, and then you could pull the joystick back and LAUNCH yourself into oblivion! Best web mechanic for any Spiderman game lol. Also, who could forget the witty and sarcastic Narrator? You know... the one that would speak out of nowhere from the heavens and make fun of you for completely maiming yourself or utterly failing a time trial? I appreciate you both for making this video!
We all know this entire channel is just a buildup to their one million subscriber special where the Burback Bros lose their minds over the design of Halo 3 for a solid hour. Good stuff btw 👍
Haha man crazy, you were 4 when this came out, I was 19 at the time 😄 but I so agree about the swinging, we need a middle ground. I love the new games, but I hate that spidey automatically lets go of the Web when swinging (unless you heavily push the analog stick away from the screen). Nice little nostalgia trip!
It's honestly very refreshing to see "we just played this old game and had fun" type of essay instead of overly analytical and serious one. Good job, exited for the next one! P.S: There are actually a lot of open world PS2-style swinging Spider-Man games, and some of them are even good. Just a small mistake, but I think what was new about Spider-Man PS4 is the AAA treatment, not the swinging returning.
Remembering when Spider-Man 2 came out, it was peak performance, I was absolutely flabberghasted at how well they managed to simulate the entirety of new york and the swing mechanics. Even if it doesn't hold up today, it lives strong, bold and proud in my nostalgic reptile brain.
They had this game set up in the waiting room at my orthodontist’s office. I begged my mom to start making my appointments for 4:30 so I’d have time to play before being seen but I kept my 3:30 slot because 4:30 was always booked by this kid who had the same plan as me. He’d be there by 3:45 and play until his 4:30 and I’m still fucking bitter.
Loved the video, lads! Never got the complaint about Spidey PS4 taking the Arkham combat. That’s literally what I want from third person superhero games. That free flow combat is perfection.
Great video on one of my favorite games! I think nostalgia does play a part in the acclaim, but honestly time and mastery prevents a lot of bumping into walls and allows you to navigate those initial obstacles with ease and style. Caleb Jablonicky made really a great video comparing Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 2018, and one about Miles Morales too, I highly recommend you check them out!
This was awesome, I think it's important like you guys said to still have it be accessible. It's nice to be able to hand the controller to a Spiderman fan who doesn't play games and just let them swing around
This game was one of the crowning jewels of my childhood. Truly exquisite. I was so grateful to get it for my 10th birthday and I loved grinding to complete the game over the course of months! This is a good and fair review you guys have here. Did you know that you can destroy the balloons by pressing Triangle and shooting a web line at it? Also that there's a fight arena which is quite fun to work through! You even get dinosaur-like Lizard enemies that appear nowhere else in the game! And a secret boss, Calypso! (She's really hard, though!) That arena was the reason I kept playing after all those years, along with the sense of freedom you get swinging around skyscrapers!
I played this game about 4 years ago on my PS2 and I didn’t have some of the problems you guys mentioned like the dodging or the clipping with swinging, I wonder if some issues are caused by the emulator
I beat it a couple months ago and dodging is hard but it's skill based. The combat was great though and I love the slow motion. This and Web of Shadows are the two best Spiderman games combat wise. Nothing has ever come close.
Just subbed. Love the way you guys narrate with each other. Super natural, entertaining and informative. Looking forward to watching more of your videos guys!🤟🏼
5:38 god as a kid I loved webbing up enemies and swinging them around rodeo style. That alone may have been why it was my favorite childhood game apart from the traversal system. Glad I still have a copy. :)
I fell in love with this game during one of the early cutscenes, I think it's like, the second or third one in the game. "She's getting away with the briefcase!!" *Double Fist Punch to the back of the head* "I got her!" Me at 15: HOLY FUCK THAT WAS VIOLENT. And he sounded so calm, like, he wasn't even breathing hard.
Honestly Spider-Man 2 is one of the best games from the 2000’s. HOWEVER, I feel that Ultimate Spider-Man is often heavily overlooked. That game had similar physics, webs attached to buildings, you could CLIMB up your own webs…and let’s not forget being able to play as VENOM.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who had the pizza music burned into their mind... also I had forgotten about how your marker came ALL THE WAY up the screen on the tall buildings... it's such a minor thing but really shows the verticality.

Isn’t that the fun of mastering the game?
How do I tell youtube i want more of this, i love how human this feels, very refreshing
This was the very first game I ever played, it was on my uncle's GameCube when I was 3
THIS was your first game?
Holy shit I'm fucking old...
We love you Eddy & Tony ❤️ looking forward to seeing more from you guys but please take all the time you need.
Boys, please do more of this style. Those 15 minutes felt like 15 seconds. Good job, boyos
I was also 7 years old when this game came out and it still holds up as one of my favorite games of all time. Thanks for the great review!!
i can honestly say that this is one of the most uniquely produced youtube videos i've ever watched, and for that, i was engaged the entire time. I'm immediately obsessed. I need there to be more content like this all over youtube now. please keep this up, or continue something similar stylistically, becuase i'll watch it all forever.
Love the dual narration fellas I think this channel is gonna be really fun to watch grow
Man I wish I could go back
“This video really FEELS like you’re watching a video by the Burback bros.” - IGN 10/0
I love this format of you guys taking turns and kind of talking to each other
Does the greatest balloon retrieval/pizza delivery simulator of all time hold up? Duh.
Loved the video! The editing was great and I love the narrating and how you talk to each other. All in all super engaging and entertaining x
This is the first video of your guys' that I've seen and I love the format. Awesome work guys, looking forward to watching more.
this is probably the most wholesome shit on the internet..
10:04 never in my life would i hace thought that this song came from this game
They had this game set up in the waiting room at my orthodontist’s office. I begged my mom to start making my appointments for 4:30 so I’d have time to play before being seen but I kept my 3:30 slot because 4:30 was always booked by this kid who had the same plan as me. He’d be there by 3:45 and play until his 4:30 and I’m still fucking bitter.
love this channel so much :) glad eddy and tony can have fun for a business and all the topics are super entertaining
Loved the video, lads!
Never got the complaint about Spidey PS4 taking the Arkham combat. That’s literally what I want from third person superhero games. That free flow combat is perfection.
Didn’t even know you had this channel until now, its great stuff! Cant wait for more.
Great video on one of my favorite games! I think nostalgia does play a part in the acclaim, but honestly time and mastery prevents a lot of bumping into walls and allows you to navigate those initial obstacles with ease and style. Caleb Jablonicky made really a great video comparing Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 2018, and one about Miles Morales too, I highly recommend you check them out!
i love this narration stule, it kept me engaged the whole time and i usually dgaf about video games
9:32 *smack* Hey, *smack* pull over. *smack* *smack* *smack* *smack* *smack* *smack* *pew*
That kid yelling, "My balloon come back!" Brought back some odd memories.
This was awesome, I think it's important like you guys said to still have it be accessible. It's nice to be able to hand the controller to a Spiderman fan who doesn't play games and just let them swing around
The transition from Peter smacking M.J. across the face to "combat" (5:20) *chef's kiss*
I dont even have to play it again i know this masterpiece holds up
This game was one of the crowning jewels of my childhood.
Here to support the BurBros
Man, I just love your video, it’s actually great commentary
I put my UP dvd in the spiderman 2 case and it's been holding it pretty well, if that answers your question
Your narrating is entertaining and fun to listen to. Keep it up with more games coming!
@@sting7789 Insomniac's combat is great, whatchu talking about. I'd say it's better than WoS at least.
You guys are awesome, you just earned a new subscriber and I can definitely see you guys blowing up soon
I hope you're doing well Eddy
Keep your head up king *kisses your forehead*
8:33
Spider-Man 2 : balloon problems
Ultimate Spider-Man : people falling off building problems
Glad you got this going with all the Gus stuff going on
Just subbed. Love the way you guys narrate with each other. Super natural, entertaining and informative. Looking forward to watching more of your videos guys!🤟🏼
Very nice vid guys. Love the commentary and conversational style. Nice narrative flow. And great editing. Keep up the good work. :)
5:38 god as a kid I loved webbing up enemies and swinging them around rodeo style. That alone may have been why it was my favorite childhood game apart from the traversal system. Glad I still have a copy. :)
Best editing yet, keep up the good work!
Loving the new channel fellas, hope Tony is able to move out to LA. Boys support boys
Absolutely loving these game retrospectives. This is yet another game I adored as a kid. Hope to see more to come!
I fell in love with this game during one of the early cutscenes, I think it's like, the second or third one in the game.
"She's getting away with the briefcase!!"
*Double Fist Punch to the back of the head*
"I got her!"
Me at 15: HOLY FUCK THAT WAS VIOLENT.
The narration style feels super natural here, keep up the great work boys
Loved playing this as a child. The tossing in the air move was hilarious, it bought time when dealing with a lot of enemies
This video is exactly what I needed, thank boys! keep up the great work!
