This is the REAL LIFE of a hairstylist. Its not all cute like what the Famous IG stylists make it look. There are MANY MANY KARENS out there waiting to terrorize a local salon.
As a mental health therapist, I can totally relate to your quote, 'some people just don't know what the hell they want.' Yep, exactly. It is these types of clients who will continue to be disappointed unless they do the work to figure out what they DO want. It is on them.
Sometimes people definitely do that. I had a person in particular that came in for the first time and got a very light highlight and had a naturally dark base. About 3 weeks later she sent me some photos of her part line where she claimed she was seeing dark that I didn't highlight (highlights aren't an all over lightening process anyway so I wasn't quite sure what she mean since there should have been dark pieces). I realized she was referencing her natural REGROWTH. She wanted another appointment in "a week or so" to "fix" the color I "messed up". That would make it 4 weeks time since the first color, which is often when people get their hair done on a regular schedule, anyway. To this day I believe she knew what she was doing. She was trying to a get a free service, 100%. When she came in I clarified that we were just highlighting her outgrowth, I even convinced her to get a base bump and "lowlight" so she wouldn't see as much of the dark because I was genuinely trying to fix the problem she claimed she had. She never came back again, so I suspected she's a chair hopper that just does that kind of thing every few months. I think I charged her for the color, but not the highlight, even though I suspected she was trying to get a free service I was just glad she left happy enough and didn't come back
I think that’s exactly the situation here. She was deliberately vague about she wanted so that she could turn around and complain about it in attempt to get discounted or free services.
I have been watching your channel lately and am so grateful to have found it. You are so pleasant and naturally funny. I’m going through something and your channel greatly helps me. Thank you for making me laugh. Thank you for calming me. Thank you for just being so human. We need more people like you!
I’m envisioning a woman going through some sort of midlife crisis who decides a new look is exactly what will make her feel better, books the first online consultation appointment she can find, and shows up expecting you to fix everything.
The first time I went to my stylist, I had no idea what I wanted. My hair stylist wouldn’t even end the consultation until we BOTH knew what I wanted 😂. It lasted about an hour. She literally told me” look you’re spending a lot of money and I don’t want you telling me you hate your hair after your done, I want to know exactly what you want”. I think being straight up like that is super helpful when it comes to clients who don’t really know what they are looking for. It was the first time she had done my hair so I know she was a bit nervous when I came in not knowing what I wanted. But I ended up loving my hair! Sorry you had that experience , some people are just difficult😢
As a hairstylist, I can get a bit flustered when a client doesn't know what they want. Its too broad/vague. I've learned to throw out ideas that are outrageous, so I start with what they DONT want and then narrow it down. Bless your stylist. I wish I had an hour free to do super in depth consultations like that
Sam I just love your top and I love your hair this dark colour it suits you not that I don’t love every colour you have but this one makes your tattoos and complexion just pop
I love your channel! I stopped doing hair because of the clients, I was good but I wasn't psychologically ready for the specific type of abuse that you get when your not a mind reader.I did it for 8 years. I switched to aesthetics specifically waxing and it's my home/calling and the clients are wonderful. This channel helps me realize it wasnt only me.
I am so glad people are usuing their voices about being on the other side of the fence...It is horrible how long we have been muted! It would be nice if we can also review clients that way it is the information we can use before taking on a client for any service. Thank you for sharing your, those red flags are so important!
I’m a stylist and I gotta say thank you for making these videos lmao we all know we loveeee to hear these kinda stories. Makes the situation a lot lighter too.
As a tip don’t only bring a photo of what you want, but bring a photo of what you DONT want :) also my own personal horror story: someone told me they were a hair stylist and could balayage my hair at home for me and I had never dyed my hair before so I was like ok cool! Anyways she bleached it from root to tip with Sally’s beauty bleach and turns out she wasn’t a hair stylist. She was just a front desk girl and I was a naive and freshly out of high school. My hair looked AND felt like hay for the longest time, and I grew up with hay fields so I know what hay feels like! 😫 thankfully it’s all grown out
I can sadly say I’ve never been to a salon where the stylist ask me any questions aside from what I want to do that day. I would usually bring a reference picture and they will just be like okay let’s do it.
Not all stylists are the same! There’s so much more that goes into it aside from the actual skill of doing hair. I wish more stylists understood that :(
@@styledbysamvay Sadly I have only encountered the same experience Kiki described above. It is a major reason as to why I have no desire to go back and just try to do my own hair. I wish there were more stylists like you around me. Love your story times, btw.
Same!!! Some don’t even ask if I have a inspo pic, I have to bring it up to them😩 my regular stylist does a great job and asks all the right questions, asks about inspo pics etc.. I’m one of those indecisive people but I always have a few ideas that i can’t decide on and she helps me choose what she thinks would be best too because I like low maintenance but she’s always booked up so it’s hard to get in if I don’t book like a month ahead. Which is a good thing because that means she’s good lol bad part is I have to cheat sometimes and get my hair done with another stylist if I really need it done asap and the other ones never ask me anything and I’m never fully happy with it when I have to go somewhere else🥲
Usually I just start off by telling them especially since I am very low maintenance with my hair . I wear it up every other day because I dont wash it . Just bringing it up can help both yoi and the stylist:)
I started watching ur vids a little over a year ago right before I started cosmo school to mentally prepare lol now I’m back mentally preparing for when I graduate in January and start working as a stylist, ur an inspiration sam!!🫶
As a mother of 3 boys I will say, it is VERY hard to relax even if nothing is going wrong. I can't remember the last time I went to a salon for myself. When I do find a hair professional I trust, I'd go while my youngest is at daycare or find someone to watch him for a few hours.
I could understand sometimes it takes a certain type of stylist to understand. I had a client who brought in her 1yr old son and I could tell she was super attentive to him but I was able to work around it and it went smoothly! Granted she only had 1 kid, 3 is a lot more to handle! But I definitely don’t mind kids so it seemed like no problem to me, but other stylist afterwards came up to me asking if I was annoyed by it. That wasn’t even something that had crossed my mind! Everyone has a stylist that will be right for them, it’s just hard to find sometimes
Love these types of videos! I stopped doing ladies hair because everyone wants to look like an ig model and colour just wasn't my forte! I now do barbering and have my own business. So hearing these types of stories I can definitely relate to clients where you've done everything you can and it still doesn't work out.
Lol and that’s the same reason I don’t want to do clipper cuts or super short haircuts, because it’s not my strong suit. I think it’s so important to recognize our strengths and what we actually ENJOY doing and choosing to specialize in that and only taking on those types of services! 👏
@@styledbysamvay I just made an appointment with a new stylist. I specifically told the front desk that I want someone who likes to do short hair, we'll see what happens, 🤞 So many places show all these long hair photos of hair down to ladies butts and maybe one or two short cuts.
As a fellow stylist of almost 10 years, I FULLY relate to this video. Everything you said/did sounded to a T like what I would’ve said/did. You handled it well and sent that Karen to someone else, just as I would’ve. 💀👏🏻
I stopped doing certain services because the clients that often booked them never seemed to be happy. Nails we're always one of those. I loved doing nails and I do my own nails, friends and family, but nail clients are SUPER picky (which is okay imo) but I always felt like they wanted things I couldn't give them, no matter how hard I tried. I realize now some of that came from Instagram where they'll see $150-200 sets and think they're going to get that kind of service for $50. I didn't have the kind of skill set to do $200 nails which is why I wasn't charging that much. I decided to just stick to mostly wedding clients since that's what I love
Do think it would be worthwhile to have clients sign off on your consult questions and answers, pre-service? Even printing off the instagram photo with that consult document might be helpful. This way if you provided what they wanted but in the end they did not like it on them, they would then be required to pay to have it adjusted. For example: if a painter paints your walls a colour you chose but you end up not liking the colour in the end, it’s not the painter’s fault. You can also add a check box to the document that says I trust the hairstylist and their judgement of what they believe will suit me. In this case, they give up their right to complain and get a discounted or free service.
Hi Sam! I started following you for over a year now. You are amazing! I’ve learned sooo much from you! For this story, I was thinking the client was going to rip you off at the end and not pay. Glad things turned out ok. Take care!
This happens in every industry especially retail! When a customer is indecisive it is a HUGE red flag most of the time. They will almost always be unsatisfied with something and want a refund.
Believe me , as a hairdresser myself I know that I have had many of clients like that, or their kids break things because they want you to do their hair and be their baby sitter at the same time 🙄
No one ever asks me these questions and it gives me so much anxiety that I'm going to get the wrong thing that I don't even go to the stylist anymore. I cut my own hair.
Some people have a vision in their head but forget that it's not how it will look in real life. They see all these "inspiration pictures" on social media where the hair is perfectly styled, the pic taken in the right light and most likely photoshopped...sometimes it's not even real hair but a wig.
I swear I think some people just want you to blow smoke up their behind. Like, they want this ego stroking waterfall of compliments to feel better and are not so much concerned with their hair. It’s definitely a part of why I also stopped doing hair. 😩 Its like hello, I’m here to fix your hair not your life. 🤦🏽♀️
I always go with “whatever you think would look best,” and end up loving it! As a stylist, do you hate that answer or do you like the creative liberty? 😂
After 10 years I've finally learned: if I have a good regular client that I've been doing their hair for 5+ years and they come in and say "oh just do whatever, just something different" I know them and I know their style, it's a good time. If it's a new client that I don't know and they seem stressed or unhappy or they have something going on (grieving a loss especially, or a breakup or any kind of life change) and they don't know what they want and just say they want something "different"? BIGGEST RED FLAG. They're going through something and they think changing their hair will make them feel better. So there's no actual defined goal that you can possibly reach through hair. (And I have a special needs child, I fully understand the stress that comes with having a rowdy kid, so I see both sides of the issue)
So, so what do you do when they just say something different and you know they don’t really want it? Do you go for what you think would look most flattering, or is it like just a trim so they’ll kind of realize they don’t want more? Or do you just keep asking questions until they have some idea??
As a single mother myself who also does hair. I can say that I understand if you need to bring your child in with you, but PLEASE try not to! I’ve had so many clients who have and it can interfere with the hair appointment.
I've had a very similar experience she had nothing at all to give me, i asked alot of questions showed pictures and she ended up choosing one then later complained and said she's never left the salon and wanted to put it in a bun like sbe did after our appointment. I was like ouch. So she came back and we changed it some but it's super frustrating when they barley give you anything but then complain that you didn't do what they want it's like wtf.
A thorough consultation should be a standard procedure. All those questions should be asked.Ive been doing hair for over 20yrs and I still remember when we were taught that in beauty school. Blind appointments happen but make me soo nervous..
I just think of my natural English awkwardness. It could look like a poisonous yellow mohawk crosses with a perm, crossed with a bowl cut, and somewhat wide-eyed and in a shrill voice, I'd be exclaiming about how happy I am with it. While it isn't a universal trait of English people by a very long way, it's surprisingly common.
First red flag-she brought her child with her to appt. Second red flag-the consult was chaotic. Clients are like dating. If the first time you meet them is awkward, why see them again?
Honestly always shocked by these people who flip out on hair stylists. I’ve had a lot of bad cuts and I just go “whelp” and walk out knowing it’ll grow tf out eventually.
Maybe for straight hair. My grandma took me to a cosmetology school for a haircut at a discount when I was seven and my curls never grew the same way. My first born son had spiral curls just like mine until his dad’s mom took a pair of regular scissors to cut his bangs short and now the rest of his hair curls the same but the front refuses to curl to this day and that was six years ago. Just the front. Where she cut. “Whelp” doesn’t fix that but hey everyone experiences life differently.
@@margaretvargus2399 so you need to style it… it sounds like it was clumped into the rest and curled because of that and now because it was cut it isn’t clumped that way anymore. I also have curly hair and have shaved my head multiple times I have manipulated my hair in so many ways and I can still style my hair as I like. Because I learned how. Maybe cut the snark 😂
@@margaretvargus2399 How can cutting the ends of hair change how it grow from the scalp? It’s not like scissors can change the shape of the follicle itself. Isn’t that what determines how curly/straight someone’s hair is?
@@Thurston86 if you had to ask me then you’re no scientist either 😂 bruh I didn’t go get no phd in hair follicles my friend but I am not alone on this planet with this experience. There’s a reason hair stylists charge more depending on experience because bad hair cuts are a real thing buddy. My hair never turned into a completely different texture or changed colors it just never grew back the same and neither did my son’s. We still have curly hair bro it just don’t curl the same no more 😂 some of us get dealt an unlucky card bro don’t try and be rude and talk down to someone just because you think you’ve seen and know it all. Try to be more understanding to complete strangers whom you have no idea what could be going on in their life and the last thing they wanna hear is some troll being facetious. Do better brother cuz this ain’t it.
I believe our industry is ridiculously over-saturated and grossly under-appreciated. I wish we could just start over and build it from the ground up with infinitely more infrastructure.
I always get mixed feelings about this. I’m someone who pays pretty good money to get my hair done often and I wouldn’t say I’m super picky, but if I’m spending a couple hundred to get my hair colored or processed and it’s not exactly the way I have had it in the past, I am definitely going to speak up and have it corrected. Especially when I do consultations before to make sure my stylist (I go to one specifically in my area :) ) knows exactly what I want and how I want it. Thankfully I don’t have the issue in this video very often because I go to the same stylist now, but I remember when I was looking for a stylist that I trusted, it’s intimidating the first time you going to get your hair done with someone new.
You fairy-godmothered her hair from box dye to salon quality. I saw another comment saying she was probably trying to get out of paying for the salon quality price and I have to agree. It takes a lot of nerve to do that to a hairstylist.
What would you do in a situation where there’s a language barrier? I had a client once that was Vietnamese and she wanted like white blond hair and I tried to explain to her I wouldn’t be able to get it that light in one appointment and of course at the end she was unhappy and kept saying it didn’t look like the picture.
That’s a really tough one. I only had one client who’s English wasn’t that strong, but luckily her daughter was able to translate. But in normal situations where there’s a language barrier, I use Google translate. It can be tricky, because obviously the translation isn’t always going to be 100% accurate and they still might not understand what you’re trying to say when it comes to hair terms… hmmm.. maybe in that situation, I would have showed her a photo of a more realistic expectation and then tried communicating that it would take more appointments to get the white she wanted ?
I don’t understand how people can just go to get their hair Appointment and not know what they want ! and also like that client you’re talking about first of all I would had a sitter for my kid because I need to be focused. I need to be able to talk to my hairstyles about exactly what I want how I want her to do it how much it cost all that stuff so I feel like she should’ve had a babysitter I mean I know it’s hard to find babysitters and it’s expensive, but you kinda need your full attention, especially in those kind of appointments you know what I mean so it’s her fault I feel and also she really didn’t give you any idea what she wanted and then you do her hair and then she doesn’t like it. It doesn’t make any sense I feel you did your best for the information you were given❤
This is why I stopped doing hair. I’m such a people pleaser and clients have such high expectations without any knowledge of color theory. Then there’s the verbally abusive clients. My mental health was so bad, I just had to stop doing hair.
Every hairstylist even some of the most world renowned hairdressers have had a story like this. I always pulled pictures and swatches so the client and I were on the exact same page if they change their mind after that that’s on them. Of course you want to do your best to please your client but if they change their mind after you’re done they have to pay for that. And of course if somebody’s giving me zero feedback not answering any of my questions I wouldn’t touch their hair because that’s a disaster waiting to happen.
You might be a type of olive if you’re very confused because it’s got a green undertone to it which can look off in gold and silver. There can be warm and cool olive so that’s another thing to check. Once olive tones find their colours though they look great ^^
Aside, I take my kids to the salon with me (my friend owns it and is okay with it lol) but they always just sit right next to me and watch thankfully lol 😅
I do nails and I've been voted one of the best in my area before, I have people burning me out too, I don't know how much longer I can do this and I've only been on my own for 2 yrs

Omg no I love it when clients do that! As long as I know 3 hard "no's" I go full steam ahead
i love this setup so clean and minimal 🌿💚 love ur videos!!
Okaaaay new set up 🔥🔥
After 10 years I've finally learned: if I have a good regular client that I've been doing their hair for 5+ years and they come in and say "oh just do whatever, just something different" I know them and I know their style, it's a good time.
Just watched this while bleaching my roots. I missed your story times! Also happy you’re gonna be back behind the chair again. Love u sam 🫶🏼
Quality is awesome! I missed the storytime videos!
As a single mother myself who also does hair. I can say that I understand if you need to bring your child in with you, but PLEASE try not to! I’ve had so many clients who have and it can interfere with the hair appointment.
I love your story times !
More please 😁thank you
Love these story times!
We wanna hear the fire story!
Lolll I love how she was like “it doesn’t look any different” and then you made like the slightest change and she was happy with it after like ahh yes
hi Sam yes I would like to hear that story next time you do that online. see you soon.
@@margaretvargus2399 no one cares lmao go seethe and cope elsewhere
You make me feel SO thankful for my stylist. Lol
Missed you!!
I love your stories so much!! Glad you’re also in NC and I hope you’re enjoying the Wilmington area😁
I believe our industry is ridiculously over-saturated and grossly under-appreciated. I wish we could just start over and build it from the ground up with infinitely more infrastructure.
do you think that there is anything we can do as individuals to make a difference? (i’m also a cosmetologist)
I had pumpkin hair once… it was the 90’s and it was straight up orange 😜 🧡
We want the fire story 🤣 🔥
Quality for me is supper good !!
Love the setting and the vibe with it ❤ keep doing it
You fairy-godmothered her hair from box dye to salon quality. I saw another comment saying she was probably trying to get out of paying for the salon quality price and I have to agree. It takes a lot of nerve to do that to a hairstylist.
Great quality & sound
Love these videos!! ❤
Please tell the fire starting story!!!
It doesn’t make any sense I feel you did your best for the information you were given❤
11:50 I love your reaction here😂 the patience you must have!🫶
This is why I stopped doing hair. I’m such a people pleaser and clients have such high expectations without any knowledge of color theory. Then there’s the verbally abusive clients. My mental health was so bad, I just had to stop doing hair.
Randomly came across this video! I loved the story 😊 I look forward to watching more of your content!
You look so beautiful sis❤
i never realized how close you were to me! that’s so cool i love your videos 🥰
Yes, tell us the story bout kid in salon!!
I have a few grey hair I don't want them covered I earned them
Love this style of videos for you ✨
Every stylist I've been to just asks what do I want and then ruin my hair. I've been colouring my hair for years alone because of it
Love the DCA stories (difficult customer alert)
I always want to hear your story times and I love your set up and quality of this video.
👏🏼 I’ll drive 2 hrs for you to do my hair😂❤️❤️❤️ that’s exciting
Girl. I wish you could do my hair. You sound amazing 😭
i can't get over that client wanting "pumpkin" color. like isn't that just straight orange?
Every hairstylist even some of the most world renowned hairdressers have had a story like this. I always pulled pictures and swatches so the client and I were on the exact same page if they change their mind after that that’s on them. Of course you want to do your best to please your client but if they change their mind after you’re done they have to pay for that. And of course if somebody’s giving me zero feedback not answering any of my questions I wouldn’t touch their hair because that’s a disaster waiting to happen.
Omg why are you so pretty 😍
this silver top/dress looks so good on you. i wish i could nail down my undertone. feels like both undertones look booty on me 🤣
You might be a type of olive if you’re very confused because it’s got a green undertone to it which can look off in gold and silver. There can be warm and cool olive so that’s another thing to check. Once olive tones find their colours though they look great ^^
Red flag number one is when a customer walks In and doesn’t even know what they want.
im still in school and ive had worse clients than this😅 shit is not easy but im sorry you had to deal with this love, you handled it great!❤
These are the clients that make you finally get forms to fill out. Also before and after for liability. I would never book that client again period.
How do i find a hair dresser like sam? I was so happy to hear she takes her time to really understand what the client wants
When im home visiting I'd def go to Wilmington. I have really thin hair and finding a stylist im comfortable with is hard.
Aside, I take my kids to the salon with me (my friend owns it and is okay with it lol) but they always just sit right next to me and watch thankfully lol 😅
I would have no problem with that!!
As someone with greys I can’t understand why you didn’t colour them when you did her root?
When my clients don’t know what they want I’m like well I can’t help u
Oh no ! The black box dye is a nightmare 😮.. been through this also, never never never
again…Aaaaahhhhh 🤣🤣
I do nails and I've been voted one of the best in my area before, I have people burning me out too, I don't know how much longer I can do this and I've only been on my own for 2 yrs
"shit on clients" 😂
