Wait for 2 years max it will start to show.
Edit: I’m a heavy user, 75% volume, all features turned on, use too much times a day. I have the OG AirPods with no battery age optimization features. Got it in 2019, Now it’s so weak, can’t even use it for 1.5 hour.
Meanwhile, I have a AirPods Pro which I bought October of last year, it has battery age optimization feature (stops charge at 80%) etc, so it doesn’t get weaker like my last one. Still after 1 year, I only get 4 hours instead of 5.
It really depends on your use case and the max volume u put and ANC (I use ambient mode, most). Most companies advertise max listening time at 50% volume, Apple is the most efficient one.

Apple could've had their battery supplier make these batteries with terminal contacts so that could easily be changed. They could've made the ends a screw cap so they could be swapped out over time. But they chose to make them disposable and therefore contributing to E-waste. These are an improvement over the 1st gen buds. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxK5mc3yw4xA7Mf2j6k6n1Uqv_KUgrKdeM Pros: The fit is fantastic. This is the biggest plus. They stay in my ears when running and become unnoticeable. They are tight but comfortable. The sound quality is about the same as the 1st gen buds. They pair more easily with my LG G8 ThinQ and immediately reconnect when removed from the case. The sound balance is excellent, good but not overpowering base and clean mid tones and highs.Cons: The noise cancellation is good but perhaps a little less effective than the Bose ANC on the 1st gen buds. Passthrough mode as not as good as the 1st gen buds making it a little more difficult to hear conversations when in passthrough.

The longevity of AirPods is the reason why I am still salty over Apple and every other phone maker removing the headphone jack. While AirPods are great and I use them everyday. The battery life degradation and lifespan of those products are pathetic. It’s the reason why I still use wired EarPods every now and then. While they are less convenient while using them, at least they can last a long time. I mean, I had my wired EarPods since 2016 with my 2016 iPhone SE. I’ve gone through two AirPods in that time span.
I know will never add the headphone jack to their iPhones. But they should at least do two things to make the situation better. First, they should have a recycling trade in program for AirPods. So if you need a new pair, just trade in the old one for a new one, get a discount on the new one, and the old one doesn’t become e-waste. Secondly, Apple should adopt USBC on the iPhone. If there’s no headphone jack, USBC is the next best option for a universal standard for wired audio input/output. Also, USBC is more future-proof than the headphone jack because it’s a digital port, rather than analog.
Unless if Apple takes these approaches, I can’t take their vision for a wireless audio future with AirPods and their environmentalism seriously.

I'm the opposite - I used to spend £200 on Atomic Floyd Super Dart earphones with Kevlar cable and guess what? The cable snapped after a year through wear and tear. Same with Beats wired earphone at the time. So for me, two years of everyday use for earphones is actually a long life! Walking in the winter with wired earphone is a nightmare - when the wind blows your scarf, they pull on the wire and rip the earphone out of your ear. I never want to go back to cables for street wearing earphones. When my AirPods wear out, i'll hand them in at an Apple Store. Being honest, it's more concerning about the amount of waste that a family throws out x 2 billion every single day from water bottles to cans, food packaging etc. AirPods are small in e waste compared to the millions of DVD cases, BluRays, VHS video tapes that are dumped around the world! Just enjoy your music and AirPods - it's more worrying the billionaires ruining the planet with their space craft and countries in the 1950s, 60s and 70s testing nuclear weapons in the atmosphere. Think about it! Don't waste your beautiful life worrying about something so tiny as a AirPod which in reality, is bringing joy to millions of people every day - may of them doing a low paid, crappy 8+ hour a day job. Let's be grateful for these wonderful inventions and if not, give it away to someone who would truly appreciate it! That's what I do with my few things that I own :)

No, supercaps dont have enough energy density for applications like this. They also have other issues such as relatively high self discharge and to use all the available power you have to drain them to zero volts where a lithium battery gives up nearly all its usable power by the time it drops to ~3 volts making it much easier to design power circuitry for.

    • @samgayney88
      @samgayney88 2 роки тому

The only time that a super capacitor would be even remotely useful is if there were a system in place to charge everything with a high amount of voltage in a short span of time and then that capacitor slowly charges the batteries back, but it wouldn’t really help because the capacitor isn’t built for holding charges, but buffering the high energy provided to the circuit.

Battery life may not improve "it isn't likely to change till major improvements are made to battery technology". How about changing the design of Airpods for the short term? • @Charlesb88

While theoretically a solution, in practice that would prove difficult for a device with such a small size. For Apple to do that they would need to make the AirPods much thicker and maybe encore rate a screw. This would make the AirPods look much less attractive, something Apple would not like nor would many Apple fanboys. Maybe if you designed them to have a the battery area to be removable by twisting to unlock it from the in-ear part. This would still increase the size likely but maybe not so much as to ruin the svelte look of the AirPods. But the reality is Apple won’t do this even if they could figure a way due to the fashion/design/esthetics Issue this creates. The best bet is a exchange program where old AirPods could be exchange for newer ones at a discount and the old models refurbished or recycled.

@@sabinchaulagain99 the video in question you referred to shows how one with a bit of skill with a solder iron, heat gun, tweezers and such might go about self replacing the AirPods battery. It doesn’t show how Apple could make it easier to do user DIY battery replacement. Yes, it would be possible to make the battery section of the AirPods larger so you could make the rear cover more easily removable rather then glued in and also make the internal battery removable rather then soldered in. This would however make the AirPods less sleek though I could see maybe a way to do this that would at least make it easy for a repair specialist to replace them in shop though there would be a trade-off in terms of the design esthetics that I’m sure Apple would never compromise on. A lot of times when Apple makes it harder to replace a battery such in the MacBook Air, it was due to wanting a slimmer laptop and user swappable batteries require extra thickness they didn’t want to have to compromise on. I get that some people would be fine with a larger sized AirPods if it meant easier to replace batteries but Apple wouldn’t and neither would a major segment of its fan base even if they grumble about battery replacement in a year or so. At least with the laptops, they now get 20 hrs on a charge with the M1-series laptops so that issue is less of one these days. But don’t hold your breath about the AirPods unless they come up with better battery Technology in the future so the batteries last longer in total lifespan. It’s not like most other brands of wireless headphones/earbuds have easy to replace batteries either from my experience so the pressure isn’t there for Apple.

Don't be so blinded, there are many laptops similar to macbooks with replaceable battery even replaceable processors i.e framework. Its simple its not user replaceable because it brings more money than if it was user replaceable or even technical replaceable.
Another example is the back glass of iphones which costs more than half the value of the iphone itself on thier apple store can be fixed rather quick and cheap by using lasers to fry the adhesive but apple doesn't use this easier and quicker method only and only because it doesn't bring as much money as they can get using shady techniques.

@@sabinchaulagain99 No, I saw the video and having taken apart similar things like that to replace batteries and fix other components, I don’t see how to make it easy to offer a user replaceable battery in such a small form factor without some key trade-offs. Remember that most owners of AirPods can’t navigate a heat gun, soldering iron, etc. so how do you make the battery removable without a battery lid that’s easy to lose or break or a battery pack attachment mechanism that’s sturdy enough. These may sound like easy engineering tasks to you but I can attest they aren’t as easy as some would think. Ask yourself why no other wireless earbuds manufacturers make such a model with removable/easy replaceable batteries in a similar small form factor. A larger form factor would permit this sure but then the athletics of the thing get out of wack for a key segment of the AirPod buying public who puts up with the battery issue solely for the small size of the AirPods and wouldn’t want bulkier AirPods.
As for notebooks, yes larger PC notebooks still have replaceable batteries in them but not the Ultra thin and light type notebooks in the MacBook Air style. No PC manufacturer makes such a MacBook Air clone with a user replaceable battery that I know of. For the larger notebooks, Apple’s 20 hrs of battery life on its M1 laptops solves the non-removable battery issue for them as it goes all day and then some and by the time the battery no longer holds a charge you can either take it in to a shop and they’ll replace the battery for (or you order the battery and DIY it if you’re like me and handy taking apart a laptop) or you’ll be ready to buy a newer laptop by then anyways. x86 based PC laptops still consume too much power to get this sort of battery life so swapping batteries is more of an issue on the higher end laptops. Remember that removable batteries require a case around them with smart circuitry inside, a latch to lock the battery in place on the laptop, larger batter contact terminals (vs internal battery power plug). All that adds extra weight and reduces space inside meaning the overall size of the laptop has to increase or other features must be sacrificed, which is bad for thing for thin and light notebook lovers, though fine for heavy duty pro and gaming laptop buyers since those notebooks are already larger and heavier.

One solution is using slightly larger batteries but not allowing the device to charge above 80 or discharge below 30ish percent, but hiding this from the UI. 30 would show as 0 and 80 would show as 100. All Li-Ion powered gadgets, which are likely to be used often, should have a user-controllable option to set levels for charging and discharging. So that you have the option to tell your device to turn off at 40% for no further discharge and not charge higher than 80%, which would keep your battery healthy for way longer. If someone doesn't care for that, he can fully charge or discharge. As mentioned in the video, you don't really get a chance to control, how far your headphones charge or discharge, which doesn't give you any option to keep the batteries healthy for longer. My daily driver phone for over 4 years now is a Samsung Galaxy Note 8, and it's battery still works perfectly fine, as far as I can tell, having the same capacity as back then. Because most times, I don't charge higher than 80-90%, I recharge at around 20% and I don't use high power charging (usually charging at 5V1A, not higher than 5V2A). Everything but the outer shell with some scratches, the phone is basically still as good as new. And I'll keep using it for some more years, if it stays working properly.

I'm surprised at how such a big channel can spread such utter misinformation. The explanation given in the video is unfortunately almost completely wrong.
The problem isn't "deep discharges". Lithium Ion batteries have electronics built in that prevent you from deep diescharging them. This means, when your AirPod's battery shows 1% and then dies, it isn't completely discharged, it has just reached it's final discharge voltage, and the built in electronics disconnect it to prevent deep discharge. There is no way to manually deep discharge them.
The only way to damage them via deep discharge is leaving them at 0% for a very long time without recharging, then the cells will slowly continue self-discharging and might enter a damaging state of deep-discharge.
The real reason why they die quickly is the constant charging and storage at 100%.
The last few percent on a Li Ion batteries charge cause by far the most "wear" and degradation. Two cycles from 100 to 90 to 100 percent cause about as much battery degradation as one cycle 100 to 0 to 100. Unfortunately these flat cycles at a very high charge levels are how Bluetooth Headphones are often used, because they are will always automatically recharge in the case.
Furthermore, just storing Li Ion batteries in high charge states cases much accelerated degradation.
For these reasons Bluetooth Headphone batteries don't use a very high end-of-charge voltage, otherwise the effect would be even more drastic.

I had a pair of 1st gen AirPods for 5 years now the right one doesn’t even last 15 minutes. Now I bought the pros and these things are fckin expensive. I would rather buy a battery for maybe even 50 bucks in about 3 years if I knew I could replace this myself.

I haven't had any issues with battery life on my Galaxy Buds. That being said, I really don't listen to them long enough to get them very low. Even in the airport and on the airplane, they rarely drain past 50% for me. This video illustrates maybe that's why I don't have any issues with them yet.

There is a newer technology called solid state batteries or SSB which should prevent formation of dendrites within the battery, the factor that causes Li-ion battery degradation.

The right airpod in my gen 1s from 2018 lasts 25 minutes, the left lasts about 45. I’m not sure I will buy another pair until they change to solid state batteries. :(

I would say then that they need a system to make the charging of the pods more efficient, like they do on an iPhone, and a chime at 20%.

Replacing a battery is a pain in ass. You need a special holder, then rewove the lower aluminum cap, the soften the adhesive with a heat gun and remove it with tweezers, the you have to micro solder the to joints without damaging the surrounding plastic, remove old battery by force (again softening adhesive is needed), insert a new batter, solder again , apply glue and close the cap).
Why it cannot be replicable like in a AirTag??

Honestly haven’t noticed it. Unless you’re blasting music really loud, my year old AirPods still last me 2-3 hours and I still have charge left in them. I mainly listen at about 60-70% which is also good for your hearing. Over that and it can start to harm your hearing long term.

My 1st gen AirPods lasted almost two years before dying on me. They're not exactly dead yet in that they still work and still charge, but I can only listen to something for 20 mins at most before the right one dies, and then the left one follows soon after. I just got the AirPods Pro to replace them, and I'm hoping they last a bit longer than that. I wish I'd waited for the 3rd gen AirPods though, as the Pros don't feel as comfortable as normal EarPods/AirPods to me.

You should be able to tell it when to stop charging and when to give the low battery chime. That would help a lot.

To ones that say their AirPods haven’t depleted in power, maybe you aren’t a heavy user…I am. And then I had to replace one. It is VERY apparent once you do that. My right one dies long before the left even when charged at the same time. It bugs me.

i had the second gen airpods and the case charged very very quickly and lasted ages and the airpods were very hard to fully run them down and i use them very heavily. Now ive got the pro’s and ive definitely noticed they do not last as long at all and the case as well. my old airpods i could use them for days and i wouldn’t have to charge the case, now i charge my pros’ case every 2 days maybe 3 if i don’t use them as much whereas my old airpods case would easily last up to 5-7 days

after 2.5 years of heavy use, my 2nd gen lasts for a little more than 2 hours for a single time, inconvenient, but somehow still usable. but what a waste if you have to throw it away just because of its aged battery. Drawbacks of its irreplaceable design.

Apple could make the software like a Tesla.
Give users the option of what percentage to stop charging. By the way if Apple did that with iPhones and iPads and MacBooks all our batteries would last longer. Tesla figured this out a long time ago clearly Apple is not interested in having batteries last longer. It’s such an easy interface to add.
And maybe Apple could go one step further than Tesla … let us set at what state of charge to hear the low battery indicator. So we can set that at 20% and then never let them charge past 80%. Boom, we’ve maximized the health of the battery!
