Why The Apple Watch Ejects Water
Вставка
- Опубліковано 30 вер 2024
- If you’ve ever seen a blue water drop on your Apple Watch telling you to turn the digital crown to unlock and eject water, then you’ve probably wondered why the feature exists. Well it’s called water lock, and it’s exclusive to the Apple Watch since it’s designed to be used while swimming and showering. But there are some issues with constantly submerging an electronic device under water.
Nicely explained. I also took the apple watch for a swim and although the speakers sounded jittery after coming out of the water, after a few hours and some water eject button presses, it was functioning nicely. Glad to have that peace of mind!
Christ these shitty links be popping up all over UA-cam.
My iPhone 12 also makes weird speaker sounds after it's wet, but it goes away.
My Galaxy Watch Active 2 also has Water Lock! It actually works very well. (but it does not enable automatically)
a few hours? mine takes a few minutes
@@sosexyimsexy2567 That's a... very questionable link.
Why does apple not hire Greg to make some explanation videos for their products, he does it amazingly.
Why hire him if they know he's doing it for free lol
@@Frozenm16 you have a point
Why would Apple make a calculator app for the iPad when others do it for free?
Umm, because they put out perfectly good user manuals for free on their website and on the book store.
I am ZACH
If a company is offering water resistance on it’s devices then that should be a deterrent for a splash or unexpectedly getting caught in a rain shower.
But as a consumer, there’s always a part of us that wants to push things to the limit.

Saw it on my old Samsung Active 2 watch too. Don't know if it also activates automatically (haven't tested it), but it does have a water lock function which you can at the very least activate it manually; the tone used to eject the water is rather loud by comparison.
I hope the oscillation tone when unlocking water mode can be longer. I often find myself having to repeatedly turning water mode on and off in order to eject all water which is a bit annoying.
That’s a lot better than having to go buy a new Apple Watch isn’t it? I would much rather push a button a few extra times than have to take a chunk of cash out of my bank, right?

I used to work at my local apple store as a genius. My friends always ask me why the iPhone doesn't support the apple pencil, I'm sure you're also asked often. It'd be cool if you made a video about it and here's the reasons: Number 1: There are hardware capabilities, the ipad is built with a special display that supports and recognises the movements of the pencil. Number 2: The size. The largest iPhone has a 6.7 inch display and the apple pencil 2nd generation is about 6.5 inches long and the 1st generation is 6.9 inches long. Its too large to sit comfortably on top of an iphone to wireless charge and too long to sit inside the lightning port. Thirdly: It just doesn't look appealing to see someone on their iphone with a white thing hanging out of the botttm and the it doesn't match any of the colours of the flagship iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max. Lastly: The iPad battery is much larger and takes 15 seconds to charge an apple pencil for half an hour whereas an iphone would take about 7 minutes to charge the same amount. It takes 28 times the charging time. It is rumoured that in the next few years, apple will drop the iPad mini from the lineup in favour of a large display iphone with pencil support. Hope this helps for a potential video, hopefully if it did get made into a video, my friends would stop pestering me about it.
Damn! Why don’t you work for Apple anymore? You seem to really know your stuff.
How do you wait 15 seconds for half an hour?
@@attackehh They meant you wait 15 seconds to get 30 minutes worth of battery life.
genuinely curious here! how do you explain something like a Samsung Note phone then?
But samsung did it
Something we've been to scared to test is "Will it be okay in salt water?" I'm still pretty curious about if it'll be okay
Yeah same. I got a s7 a month ago and i didnt let a single drop of any kind of water touch it till last week. When i was washing my hand, i pull the watch up my arm so it doesnt touch the water. But i didnt pull it up enough and a few drops touched the watch. I almost got an heart attack

@Luke Missirian-Parise on the official promo video the watch is actually worn by a surfer to count waves. I believe it’s ok then

It's not exclusive to Apple.
My old Samsung Galaxy Watch has this too. Including the automatic lock, warning and speaker usage to get the water out.
Even GW4 have it!

That’s not what he’s saying he’s saying in apples product line, the Apple Watch is the only one to have water lock.
Thanks for not saying "SaMSUnG/AndROiD aLReadY HaS tHis"
It happens every year and I’m tired of it, its like a never ending war
1) I’ve read not to wear in the shower due to the soaps and shampoo breaking down the seal just as said in the video.
2) I always rinse my watch off with freshwater after swimming in the ocean with it. Salt water is corrosive.
3) anyone else hear the sound playing in their head of the watch unlocking when it showed the image of the water coming out the side speaker?
Another reason to not wear in the shower is so that you can wash your wrist, because I have worn it during the shower for the last few days, and my wrist smells bad. It can lead to rashes.
Also, the sound is a frequency played to eject water. I have used it for my phone a few times.
@@hyperbeam79 after working in the yard I’ll take my watch bands and the case off my watch to wash them. It can all get pretty stinky after a while.

It was on my first-generation Halaxy watch, too, as well as the Gear S3
Yup I have it for my Watch active 2
What Greg means is it's only exclusive to apple watch and not other water-resistant apple devices like the iPhone.
Nice informative video. Just to correct one thing, it isn't the only watch with that feature. Galaxy Watch4 does the same.

0:11 "water lock" is exclusive to apple watch?? Literally every name brand watch has this feature lol. Samsung watch even has a physical bezel so you can navigate the watch underwater.
I guess you can say "exclusive to samsung" 😂😂
It will never turn on automatically unless it thinks that you're working out; in that case it will lock you from using the screen right before asking you if you want to record a workout. This forces you to stop exercising to unlock the watch while it is out of the water and scroll down to the button to start a work out. After that you have to relock it.
I came here for this
so when I start a swimming workout it turns on automatically, does it?

as someone who wears their apple watch to work and often forgets to take it off before showering, im very grateful for this feature
I sometimes wonder if Greg will ever run out of Apple-centered topics to make videos about. But videos like this one remind me that it’s going to be a long time - if ever - before that happens.
(And please don’t think I’m saying anything negative about videos dealing with super niche content. I actually find them fascinating and love watching them!)
As long as people are too lazy and ignorant to read user manuals, he'll never run out of topics.
(Nothing against anyone who watches his videos, I'm a subscriber too. These tech how-to/information videos will always be in constant need because consumers would rather watch someone give them a quick answer to their questions in lieu of actually reading and learning about the products they buy)
This isn't just an apple watch thing, the FitBits do the same
The water lock isn't exclusive to apple watch
It's on every samsung galaxy watch
The galaxy watch series 4 has the same feature not exclusive at all to apple watch
I have a Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 and it has that feature, but it needs to be put into water lock on command ahead of time. Being British, getting caught out in a rain shower is a fairly regular occurrence for me, so I'd be lying if I said I'd never had to activate it and save the day. Anyway, from what I see in the video, I can only assume that the Apple Watch is a whole other system as my understanding is that there must be sensors in there that detect the presence of water.
does anyone know what is the name of background music ?

Question. I have an Apple Watch series 3. Does Water Lock turn on automatically on my watch? Or do I have to enable it manually?
he showed how to do it in the video but, I have the same watch and what I do is from the main screen with time, swipe up and look down the list of all the options until you see the water droplet and you dont have to turn the crown so i believe that is how you do it, and when you are out of water you turn the crown and it starts the water eject
hope this helps!
Water lock does not protect the watch if that's what you're concerned about. It's just to prevent the water from doing stuff on your watch, because as mentioned, it can't differentiate between water and your finger. The speakers can sound muffled if water gets into them, so it ejects water. So even if you don't have water lock on, the only thing you are risking are things like changed settings, accidentally calling someone or starting a workout etc.
@@Shadow__X You explained that a lot better than me, thank you!

You shouldn't expose "waterproofed" devices to water with detergents not because they supposedly disolve seals. They usually don't. Most solutions that can disolve a rubber seal will disolve a human hand as well.
The whole point of detergent is to lower water surface tension - effectively making "water droplets" smaller, so they penetrate better.
Electronic devices have gaps in external shell (including gaps around the seal). These gaps may be too narrow for pure water, but wide enough for water solutions with detergents (like hand soap).

"Exclusive to Apple Watch" cearly not used another watch brand. This is a future in Huawei watches for a while. Apple had to come with this
So does this mean I can go in a hot tub. Or swim in chlorine water. And have the watch submerged and it will be fine? My watch is series 3
Waste of my 2 minutes. You did not explain why. Ejecting water because of ejecting water is not the answer.

WHY APPLE DEVICES ALWAYS TURN ON WHEN BEING CHARGED WHILE POWER OFF???

What if you play this sound underwater? Would that allow the water to go in easier? What about water with soap dissolved in it? That will reduce the surface tension and could help water go in.

I never had my Apple Watch anywhere near water so I never knew this was a thing. Thanks for the info!

While I am a massive Apple fan, you name it and I've probably got it, I'm not sure you can get away with calling this feature "exclusive" since the Huawei GT2 watch has had a water eject feature for over a year now and for all I know the GT1 watch had it as well :-)

No, it's not exclusive to the Apple Watch. Then again, out of Apple's products, it's the only one that has it.
The fact or not fact that it is waterproof or waterresistant has NOTHING to do with soaps and other cleaning stuff. This is a completly different issue. The watch could be waterproof for 100m under water and still get fucked up by soap.
