- Back in 2015, Apple introduced the 12-inch MacBook. The first model ever to feature an Apple logo that didn’t light up. And since then, the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air have also received the same treatment. This caused some controversy, since the glowing Apple logo has been around for over two decades and has become an iconic design element of Apple’s notebooks. So why was the illuminated Apple logo removed? Well, that’s exactly what I’ll explain in this video.

Once you learn about pc’s you become aware they have garbage cheap hardware pretty much less than $300 hardware for a $2000 machine it’s quite sad, don’t let their cheap lighting fool you.. The only saving grace is how well ios is optimized

What I really miss are the battery level on the side of the mac (that worked even if the macbook was turned off) and the little light that told us if it was on or off. Now with the new macbooks that turn on when you open it, or press any key, you cannot know if it is turned off or on if you don't... turn it on. Really it's a huge fail when it was so good before!

Sometimes companies go too far in removing useful features. I have a 2011 MBP and use the battery indicator while charging it to give me an idea of how much longer I need to keep it connected or if it's good enough to unplug it and power it on.
My guess is they wanted more power cycles to happen to reduce battery lifespan.
One of the obvious reason is the machines now are so fast and responsible that they don't need to spent space and hardware to do this stuff since there almost no diference if your machine is off or just sleeping the time to wake up is almost the same 'just the time to open it'...

honestly the glowing logo is the only thing i miss from my old pro. i'm happy that i have a new computer but it was a cool feature

The glowing apple was so iconic. I’ve had macs all my life but the first MacBook I ever bought was the 2017 MacBook. It was good but too small and had too little space on it. I wanted something bigger and better so I ended up going from a 2017 MacBook to a 2015 MacBook Pro. One for the 15.4 inch screen plus more space but the glowing apple is by far my favorite thing on it. Can’t believe they got rid of it. I hope they bring it back eventually.

Really miss that glowing light, just gave the machine so much more personality than a barely visible piece of metal. It even had an unintended function in telling if your backlight is blown by shining light through it.

Maybe if Apple for once didn’t just focus on making the MacBook incredibly thin, they could have more unique features like this again
Maybe the “thinness” should be reserved for the Air. Leave the Pros thick enough for the glowing logo (still sleek design, Pros don’t need to be as thin as an iPad). At least there’s an aesthetic difference to Air and Pro that’s not just size.

My MacBook Pro from 2013 has been so good to me, I haven’t had the need to look at newer models. I didn’t realize they got rid of the glowing logo, that’s so sad. Mine still feels like it’s super lux looking to me because of it. Steve Jobs really knew how to make tech subtly beautiful and enticing to look at, I’m glad I got to enjoy that era.

I don't mind the new logo, probably because I have a 2017 model but I thought it was cool originally and am lowkey jealous of those with macs that do have the glowing logo, but both design choices are valid. My only complaint about the new logo is they chose a smooth metal that, if you don't clean it occasionally, becomes obviously not shiny if you don't use a case lol

Let’s be honest, the light was really cool tho, I remember walking into coffee shops in Hollywood seeing all the attractive people with their glowing macs wondering what screenplay they were working on! ( but in reality they probably were just watching UA-cam videos) 😂

That's the thing that put me off Apple products. 'Cool people' sat in coffee shops? Just sad people probably taking a photo to post on Facebook trying to impress other sad people. They weren't 'working' on anything. They were just (and still are) sad and lonely people who have succumbed to very successful advertising.
The truly 'cool' people were out in the countryside, visiting places of beauty and enjoying life. All technology and the pathetic creatures that live in the fake social media world left far behind.

@@barbrat8yearsago229 More importantly, relying on nostalgia shows a lack of fresh ideas. Apple creates such 'safety nets' to boost sales when they're eventually down all the time. The first iPhone didn't have video-recording, for example, to sell iPhone 2.

That's Apple, they always do that and it pisses me off too,
I am not an Apple user at personal level, but I miss the glowing logo.
On their iPhones, Apple removed the home button, the headphone jack, the charging brick, now they plan to remove the charging / data lighting port...
...you may note how wireless charging currently is present only on high-end phones, and none of those phones come with a charging pad in the box.
For every essential feature they removed, Apple has been able to successfully charge customers to allow the connection in a wireless fashion. The charging port removal on phones may well result in a gamble that the public will reject.

The glowing apple logo actually had a functional upside as well. When the backlight on the screen would inevitably go out, you could shine a light through the apple logo to see if the screen was actually on, thus confirming the issue of a bad backlight.
Yeah, I used to do that all the time to diagnose screen issues. It also served as a way of telling if the computer was actually on, since Apple seem to have an aversion to indicator LEDs. Now with USB-C you cant even tell if the computer is charging or if an SMC reset was successful.

Yeah, the new ones don't have any indicator that they're turned on. If you reboot and get that black screen for anywhere between a minute and an hour, you literally can't tell if it's turned on and is working through some kind of update or if it's crashed.
I rarely reboot mine because I have no confidence it's going to work.

I liked the glowing logo, it looked cool. But the older I get the more I’ve really came to love the minimalist look. Sleek and simple gets me every time and I think Apple is doing a great job of it. Their products look, and feel high quality
I agree with this tbh. That feature had its time and looked beautiful - walking into a computer shop and seeing the glowing logos would just draw you over, it was genius really. But there’s no need now, there’s not a soul who doesn’t know who Apple is

I was holding out hope that they'd one day add a glowing logo to the iPhone and iPad. Instead, they removed it from the Macbook. Dreams crushed and forever saddened that they chose to remove such a neat feature.
iPad, that I can understand because of it's size. Less chance of your hand covering up the logo, but the iPhone? too small to fit.
What you've never realised is that the iPhone and iPad _have_ had logos that can glow, all this time. It's just that they only light up when you open them up... ;)

The glowing logo lets you know the device is on or in use. The glowing logo stands out when illuminated. The glowing logo is unique to Apple. Apple could get around the weakness and light bleed interference.

It’s a mistake to remove the logo. In the October 2o21 140inch and 16 inch computers they removed the name MacBook Pro just below the display. I bought one, and that is my only disappointment, the removal of the name Below the display.

Black bezels are the norm because when the screen is turned off, it is black

Interestingly, the first glowing logos were "upside down" so that it was visible to the USER before they opened the laptop. It wasn't until they started getting a lot of product placement in TV that they realized it was more important for it to be rightside up to OBSERVERS while the laptop was in use.

i know, i always thought why didn't steve jobs know that? The user sees it for a second while they open it up, but everybody else sees an upside-down logo. That's one of the biggest fk ups that many people who espouse SJ and Ive design thinking that doesn't get much criticism. That was one major fk up, basically a schoolboy error

@@neanda Imagine being a genius of the caliber of Jobs or Wozniak. How many variables are going through your head at any moment? You want not making a good, or even a great, user experience : you want the *best* user experience. Every single detail is going through your head over and over again for countless hours. When first designing the device trying to create the best user experience ever, you think, logically, that the logo facing the user when they first get the device out of the box makes a lot of sense : after all, Apple's logo wasn't *that* well-known to begin with. Now imagine how many people take decisions for Apple and are involved in the process... once Apple became more well-known, Jobs figured out that this 0.0001% difference in the user experience was worth getting cut for TV placements and just the general clout that a beautiful Apple product with a very visible logo creates. But there was a *reason* why Jobs left the logo that way in the first place. Next-time you're asking yourself "why is a total genius doing this weird thing?", maybe think that "theY dId a ShcOlboY fcU Up" is likely not the answer.
Also, concerning tv, it’s funny how so many shows put stickers on Apple notebooks, but still raise brand awareness, because ever stickered computer is a Mac...
1:52 what do you mean by the iPad pro having a pencil cut out and rigidity issues due to that? I can't recall seeing that issue, also where is the cutout on iPad pro for the pencil? The capsule shape cut out on the side where the pencil magnetically snaps on?
I’m so sad it was removed!!! I loved the glowing apple logo!!! Was my favourite external feature of the apple computers. When I finally got my first (and current) MacBook Pro it didn’t feature the glowing logo and I was so upset. I felt robbed of my excitement and joy.

As a technician, I miss the lighted apple logo as indicator of when the system was fully shut down. I used to tell people not to close the lid until the light on the apple turned off. Once apple started turning the display dark while the system was still shutting down, the light on the apple logo became the best way to tell when shutdown was complete.

On a weekly basis, I have a meeting with a fellow colleague who before the meeting starts opens up his Macbook pro (I sit opposite him). Without fail, just as he opens his Mac, I typically have the thought; "I wonder why the apple is not glowing". This thought remained stuck, unanswered in my mind; until now. I loved when Apple wasn't big and had to do all the cool factor things that made it different. Loved the mag safe, loved the glow logo, loved the white MacBooks when all PC's were black, loved the white earbuds while all others again black, loved the click wheel, loved when they were first with touch phone, all the cool things they did back in the day when they were hungry : ) Also will always miss Steve Jobs presentations.

Then you will be very happy with Apple in the coming year. Magsafe is coming back, so are many of the ports like SD card reader and HDMI. They are hungrier than they have ever been......have you not heard that they stopped using 3rd party intel processors? the Silicon M1 chip is their new processor that integrates its CPU and GPU. A base model MacBook Air that costs $899 now, (256gb ssd, 8gb ram) will smoke a 4,000 2019 MacBook Pro. I have one, im typing this message on it right now. I can use the heaviest and most powerful programs out there on an AIR. Not a Pro or a iMac desktop computer, with only 8gb of ram and I would never buy a Mac with that limiting amount of ram, I can do things that machines 10 times the price couldnt handle. GAME OVER PC. Mac just destroyed everyone.
@Pixel8453 When you can get a great performance + portability with a $999 M1 Macbook Air, $4k seems like an overkill. In that range you can build a decked out gaming station, which itself is a different category than ultrabooks.
I miss my last ipod nano with clickwheel. I would buy ipods again if they bring back the clickwheel. I mainly use my iphone for games/streaming and I don’t enjoy playing music here, for some reason lol.
@@mikebreslin2108 chill out there for a sec, Mac is great, but it still cannot hold up to multi core Intel or AMD desktop processors. That's one thing Intel and AMD cannot be beat at. Now laptop processes, for example, i7 11th Gen, get smoked by the m1 and it's just the beginning. Excited to see what Apple will do in the near future

He said it was removed in 2015, but I have a mid 2015 15 inch MacBook Pro that has the glowing apple logo but I do notice that they did remove the MacBook Pro branding below the display on that computer.

I still have an early 2015 MBP with the glowing logo and I plan on keeping it for awhile since it was one of the last models to have it. I still think they should figure out a way to bring it back, it was one of the cool unique things about having one.

What about moisture ingress, we had several that developed reverse Apple logo shaped marks on the screen, some were caused by cleaning products being used or spills but many others from being in a damp environment like inside a bag of someone caught in the rain. We had a lot of warranty replacement screens.
I don’t understand the obsession with “thinner.” I’d rather have a slightly thicker MBP with the glowing logo, MagSafe, and more ports over a MBP as thin as a nickel that has none of those. I think most people (not just professionals but students, casual users, etc.) would agree.

I guess you dont keep up with the latest Apple news. you got your wish. with waaaaaayyyyyyy more computing power. No glowing logo though because its dumb. I understand the obsession with thinner, my camera bag just got 3 pounds lighter with an AIR 2020 M1 chip and my computer is lighter and extremely powerful. There isn't a MacBook Pro that can hold a candle to my AIR (maybe a $6,000 version with a 9 core CPU). Us Professionals want lighter, more powerful, more ports and we got it. check the news homie.

If this was explained to me like this when the change happened, I wouldn’t have been disappointed. Get this guy a spot on stage after the product announcements to calm down any negative feedback
Simply using a RGB lighting cable to indirectly illuminate the logo would have solved both the problems. This would have also provided the users with the option to change the colour or control a lighting pattern, just like gaming laptops do. That would have been really cool.

The thing is, that sort of flashy customization has never been Apple's brand. They prefer a forced subtlety and uniformity.

Main reason I picked the last 2015 version instead of getting a 2017, and the keyboard as well. a nice piece of tech gold to have.
I recently had a meeting with someone in their office, they had a MacBook open, and it had the light Apple logo, it was the first time I’ve seen this in person, it was so awesome working
I’m just sad that I’ll never get to experience the glowing logo…

The 12in macbook was my favorite mac and still have it today. Also I preferred the non glowing logo as the glowing one was too... flashy.

Yeah I find it hard to believe that they engineered such an outstanding piece of machinery but couldn’t figure out how to block the light coming through from behind. It was a conscious choice to change it. It is a huge factor for buying the computer, but now I will certainly won’t like the idea of getting a new MacBook without it
Maybe this is just one of the marketing tricks, so when they put it back to the newest macbook people will fight to get it
Honestly functionality-wise, I think Apple made right decision. The glowing logo actually caused color inaccuracy on my 2015 MBP that was quite irritating, so after switching to the redesigned version, the issue is gone. But if Apple’s able to bring back the feature without compromises that’d be awesome
they should just make it thicker, and while they're at it they should add a better camera

i thought it was related to having OLED displays wich dont use backlight or something like that related to the screen, not that they ditched it on purpose.

I still use mid 2015 MBP but now might upgrade to 14inch MBP, but we all miss the logo
I still have a Macbook Pro with the glowing Apple logo. It doesn't only light up to be iconic and widely visible (which I honestly don't care about), but when my laptop sits against a wall, it illuminates the wall behind the screen a bit and makes the transition from bright screen to dark wall softer. That in turn reduces strain on the eyes when looking at bright screens for longer periods of time.

I loved the glowing logo! I always liked customizing the back of my MacBook with stickers that would look really aesthetic with the glow.
My Macbook Pro logo still glows. I'm not buying a new one until they glow again to. I'll switch back to Windows just go I can have something glowing back there if I have to.
All I'm hearing is "we're too lazy to engineer it to glow".

The transparent logos were useful for diagnosis; you could shine a light through it if the display's backlight broke
