My mom was wondering why I was making RRRRRRRR sounds... her face expression was priceless, even more when I finally learnt the Ř sound, and she couldn't say it
Amazing! Dekuju za komentář
Being native speaker I struggled with R and Ř as a kid as many fellow Czechs do.
I even had to go to regular consultations with logopedics specialist who gave me exercises for daily practise that eventually helped me to learn pronounce R and Ř correctly.
Thank God for these and thanks to my parrents who were responsible enough to sign me up for the consultations back then.
I even remember some of the exercises to this day! :)
Hi Petr! Thanks a lot for this comment. Ř/R is such a struggle and is very individual how the body takes it in. :)
It was enough for me to hear from my parents (at the age of three) that we would have to go to see a speech therapist, I would finally say "traktor" instead of "tlaktol"

Nice! Do you have a feeling like your pronunciation got better after this video?
The ultimate challenge is amazing 😂😂
Great class Katka!
Haha happy to hear!
I'm from Scotland, we roll our R's normally. It's the English, Americans, Australians, Irish that can't, won't. Ř isn't a problem, it's some of the long words and the grammar that throws me. Also, the long vowels, totally unnecessary I think. 😎
I love Scotland! It’s a great place! I spent 2 years in Glasgow.
Yes! Your R is really helpful, your Ř must be great. :)
Long vowels are not the core i agree, I just don’t agree it’s unnecessary ;) in some cases it changes the meaning completely... plus it makes the language sound prettier. :)
What topics are now difficult for you? Any favorites?
Interestingly, Indigenous Australian languages include rolled R’s, so if Australians learn to pronounce our place names and traditional owners correctly then we’re primed for Czech also!
@@CzechWithKaterina I'm so sorry, Glasgow is such a dump and they talk really funny. The East of Scotland is much better, the weather is better, people are a normal height.
@@DavidFraser007 What a patriot you are. A whole city is a dump! You are my new favourite hobby.

Great video Kateřina!
Děkuji. :)
For the past 11 years, I (German) was trying to learn the Czech R pronunciation. I had Czech courses, lived in CZ, have a Czech gf, but ever since I haven't managed to learn the R. I was really hoping that this video will help, but unfortunately not. I guess I'm an R handicapped. Lol
If you have any more advice, I would be grateful to hear.
Nevertheless, I really enjoy and appreciate your videos and your way of teaching, @Kateřina.
Hi Kib!
I think this is one of the top comments I've got on my channel! :))) From what you are writing, there is a bigger issue. Since you are a native German speaker it's of course a bit bigger challenge for you to start saying R well as the German R is created in a completely different way in a completely different part of the mouth.
Have you tried consistent practice, like every day for let's say 5min? And even faster and more efficient way would be to visit a logoped once. They can really well distinguish what's the issue in your speech and direct you to a better practice. Let me know, how it went.
Thank you so much for your time to share your knowledge to us.
This is very informative, i watch your video over and over again😁.
Hello, I just found this video and it's amazing. Thanks a lot 😁

Ahoj Kateřina. Dobrý den. Today , 6th December 2023 , i start listening to pronounce r and ř. This is excellent lesson. Thanks so much for the lesson. 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🇨🇿
I have been learning Czech for a while and already knew some of the information. I wish I had access to these many months ago 😅 i wanted to ask if you have any ideas on how I can improve my comprehension. I live in Olomouc and the people here tend to speak a little fast for me. And I don't mind to ask them to slow down. But I would love it if you have any ideas that might help.
Ahoj Camerone! Dobrá otázka!
I will try to answer with as many resources and I ideas as there are just like that on my mind. :)
1) Try to listen with a text. Find books with audio that you like, find videos with subtitles.
2) Listen to videos you already know in your language second time in Czech (best again with the subtitles). I pretty much learnt English just by watching Friends first in Czech and then in English. I love this show! And I recommend it 100% as the language there is very much oriented on authentic daily situations that you will come across very often.
3) Set up (maybe an online skype call) meeting with a native just for a chat about some specific topics that you prepare your vocabulary for. And find a person that doesn't mind repeating and letting you to jot down the vocabs that are hard for you to understand. Believe me, the vocabulary will repeat all the time.
4) Start singing Czech songs. Try to read and translate Czech music. Best are the interprets that have for instance just a guitar i nthe background so you can hear better. First you will need to read the lyrics just on it's own. But when you listen again to the song, it will pay off. In the songs the language is sometimes very authentic and it will help the daily comprehension. To recommend some names of the interprets and even songs: Pokáč (Mám doma kočku), Chinaski (Víno), Jaromír Nohavica (album - Tři čuníci), Karel Kryl
5) Listening practice with written down exercises - they are a lot of work but they work like magic. They are often ver authentic and their advantage is that you can always pick your level so they are not too easy or too hard.
These are just on the top of my head. Anybody have more ideas? Maybe some personal experience?
Thank you so much, I've been living 1 year already in Praha and daaaamn its hard the ř... Im mexican but still
Není zač, Andrés! :) With a ton of practice you will be a pro! :)

Já taky
Great video 👍 I'm natively English speaking, and I probably don't have trouble with rolled Rs because I've studied Spanish. When I first tried Czech, I noticed Ř was tricky. More recently I read something which seemed to click for me, and I now think of Ř as "rzh" ("zh" representing the soft J sound used in French, but here, made with the tongue behind the teeth as when saying a rolled R) and it seemed to come out sounding good! I need a true Czech to confirm if it sounds right, but your video has so many useful tips :)
Fantastico!
Gracias!
I have an accent where my R's sound like W's! (Check out Roy Hodgson for a famous example) Listening and repeating the Scottish rolled R helped me to learn the Czech R and Ř sounds
Great, that's already a second person with Scottish R that says that. I lived there 2 years and it make total sense! You are right, it is completely the same as the Czech R! :)
Many varieties of Gaelic in particular have some form of the ř.
Děkuju ❤
7:09 Funnily enough this actually means "HOLD THIS" or "CATCH" in Croat, but it's written regularly, like in CZ too apparently "drž"
I can do that final sentence really well after 8 pivos ;)
Thats also an achievement, Posh! Maybe it tells you to always chill while speaking Czech 😂
French native speaker here.
I have no problems rolling the R like in Czech, Russian, Polish, Spanish, etc... even though our standard French R is pronounced differentely.
However, concerning the Czech Ř which is supposed to be a combination of R + Š/Ž in one sound, each time I hear words with Ř on Czech radio or Czech television, I can barely hear the trilled R sound preceeding the Š or Ž sound.
For exemple, the Czech word for "good" /dobře/ sounds almost exactly like the Polish word for "good" /dobrze/ to me.
Hey! The sound R in the Ř doesnt preseed the Š or Ž sound. R+Ž/Š is kind of merged together and creates a completely new sound: Ř. With a bit of practice with this video (there are more around YT as well), it’s possible to master.
Nice nejlepsi na světě
Děkuju, Luboši. :)
I'm from Indonesia. My letter 'R' has exactly the same pronunciation as Czech i.e. rolling our tongue. Yet I still find it difficult to pronounce the letter Ř.
Is it ok if I pronounce for instance:
Ři -> as Rzi
Combining R and Z is the easiest I think. 🤔
Sure, Shandy, that's a great start. And I am sure anyone will understand you.
Zdravím Tě Kačko, jsem ráda, že jsem zavítala na Tvůj channel a viděla tohle video... Je naprosto skvělé a sama jsi hrozně sympatická dáma s krásnou výslovností... Sama mám problém s výslovnosti "R"... Ráda bych se Tě proto zeptala, jestli je možné se to díky Tvému videu, které si budu pravidelně pouštět naučit vyslovovat to správné R, bez vyslovování v krku... Přeji hezký den a ještě jednou moc děkuju! Simona ❤️
Ahoj Simono,
A můžeš si klidně taky zazpívat, když budeš chtít trochu výzvu :) ua-cam.com/video/JKomxT7ImEg/v-deo.html
podařilo se ti to naučit? a Ř umíš nebo to taky ne?

Why are you trilling in the apical alveloar position instead of retroflex post alveloar it's so difficult and sounds so weird lol
I dont know what you mean by trilling :)) but why… im not sure, its just how Ř sounds unfortunately. 😂
Nice
Děkuji asi jsem prvně v životě řekla tři
To mám velkou radost!!!! :) xxx
I'm glad to be able to pronounce "R" naturally. It's the same in my German dialekt too. "Ř" was and still is a challenge for me. Not as much now as it was, almost 8 months ago, when I started learning czech. I'm glad I had acting lessons many years ago. I reminded the speech training my class used to do before our rehearsals. That's been very helping. But your video showed me some other very useful technics to improve myself. I hope I'll be able to pronounce " čtyři " one day. That word nearly kills my tongue every single time. XD
Great to hear Virdra! :) I am sure you will master it soon!
Funy girl🤣🤣

I came here from a Language group that said Czech "Ř" is hard to pronounce...
Anyway thank you for the video!
I understand you. :) Thanks
România has also R 💪 Very good video, thank you 😊
As a native French and English speaker, this one is definitely a hard one since my R is either flat (English) or throaty (French). I've been practising this for months now and I'm still struggling a lot- sometimes I'll get it right, and I've noticed this tends to be after a consonant such as T or D, or if it's in the middle of a word. I'm trying to practice so that A) I can hold my R for a long time like I can in French and B) I want to stop being so breathy when i say it- it always sounds like I'm saying errrr or arrrrr. I just want rrrrrrr xD
I practiced 7:25 over and over again til I got it perfectly. I must say knowing the French r is really helpful
Hi Katrina ,I have also same problem ,I have exam in this month for trvaly pobyt, still I m struggling ,please help me

Learning how to say R ? WTF?..Funny that Ř can't say even most of Slovakians they would just say pŠíroda or naŽíkat when reading something czech. Poland has Ř as well or not ? (Rzeczpospolita , Przemyšl)
(That was funny when the French in the US learned to pronounce "the". "Aj em dzzffFLUSs OTEC !!! " 😅 I just remembered that now..)

Polish rz is a bit different than ř
Slovák languages doesnt have Ř ať all so they also need to learn it if they want to say it right
