    Steve I worked on hundreds small block Chevys back in the 70s along with racing them on oval tracks, leaks like you are having generally indicate a crankcase venting issue, the leak at the back of the intake manifold after the balancer is a good indicator, there is no such thing as too much crankcase ventilation.
    You truck is very well done, you not only did an outstanding job with the workmanship but also demonstrated that doing a restoration is time consuming and painstaking when you actually DO the work and don't farm out all of the various components for repair or refurbishing only to reassemble the truck and declare victory, to me that's a fools paradise. The tasks involved with actually touching and working on virtually every part of your truck has to be one of the most honest and realistic builds ever published on UA-cam or even TV for that matter, I for one just can't stomach the "blow it apart, sub everything out and reassemble" crowd, to me that's just smoke and mirrors to sell products nothing more, you on the other hand walked your audience through the actual work processes required to produce the final product.

      I can't agree more! We got to see pretty much every aspect of the job and it felt wholesome and refreshing. So many start on youtube being genuine and cool but then they start to using all the 'flashy' tricks that are as honest as click bait titles and I say to myself, "another one bites the dust...". I think we got a good one in Steve :)

    Steve, here in the UK we call a 30 year old wreck like yours "An Old Banger." but man oh man, that is the nicest old banger that I have ever seen. what you have done is to make a new truck with a few old bits underneath. I was a mechanic in the army 60 years ago and I doubt I could do the job that well. I take my hat off to you. My best wishes to you and Elizabeth and your brother and mom and dad and the dogs and the squirrels and the odd raccoon. You may give Elizabeth a kiss on the cheek from an old (very old) soldier.

    It can help to leave the timing cover bolts loose, then install the harmonic balancer, then tighten the timing cover bolts There's a little slop in the bolt holes so the cover can move around a little, and this way the seal will center itself on the balancer shaft and eliminate any misalignment that may have been caused by tightening the timing cover bolts first.

    • @budlanctot3060
      @budlanctot3060 Рік тому +2

      That's exactly what I do, too. But in addition, I drill the cover and front of block and dowel them so they are in perfect alignment now and in the future if I have to remove the timing cover for any reason.

    Steve, you had me laughing when I was thinking what or how you hooking your laptop up pulling P-codes could find when the truck is non-OBD. Then when you said it lead you to loose suspension parts, I realized it was a joke, of course. Very good one! Congratulations on the success of a year's worth of work and videos on your, now new again, square box Chevy.

    You need to loosen all the bolts on the cover so the seal can allign itself with the damper

    • @oldschool1993
      @oldschool1993 Рік тому +1

      Problem is that those timing covers are doweled and you have to rely on the accuracy of whoever built that cover. On the old English cars, we always left the bolts loose until the pulley was on so it would self center.

  • @TomokosEnterprize
    @TomokosEnterprize Рік тому +5

    Well done Steve. A tip for the balancer seal is to not fully tighten the cover bolts without first partially sliding the balancer on to the crank. Those pesky intake leaks at the corners are notorious for intermittent leaks. Sometimes they stop, or not. This project is something you can be very proud of. WOOHOO on you my FRIEND ! ! !

    Another good suggestion also is to put a 1/4 inch 35* to 30* chamfer on the OD oil side of new balancers. For an easy install. Careful not to nick anywhere on the sealing race for the seal. 👍👍Adam is up here in IL. wounder if he'll stop by your place for ride along. 🤞🤞

    If that seal leaks again, you could loosen/remove the timing cover and tighten it after the new crank seal is replaced and the harmonic balancer is installed. Doing that might self align the aftermarket cover to the crank. You might need to ream the holes a little to give it some wiggle room.
