  • One solution to solving roof leaks on your JK Jeep Wrangler. Tired of finding your front seat floor full of water? See if this is your problem.
    UPDATE: It's been a year of rain, with a recent 2" deluge last week and I am happy to report I have had no more water since adding this minor fix. Good luck with yours!

    It's very disappointing that we spend this much money for something that leaks as bad as they do. My 25 year old YJ with a soft top doesn't leak as bad as my wife's '17 Unlimited does with a hardtop.

      I hope this works for you. If you're getting wet floor pans in the front on either side, this is definitely a possible source. The problem is the floors become wet and the source is virtually undetectable. I came upon the solution (and it was driving me crazy I have to say) completely by process of elimination. Anyway, good luck! Hope it works. Mine have been dry now for a couple of years now. Such a relief! Thanks for watching.

    Thanks so much! Now I’m clear on the procedure. I’ve spent hours trying to stop this issue. I used weather stripping from O’REILLY,pipping from an insulation maker,and on and on. Very frustrating. I’ve been successful only to find it wet again weeks later. Chrysler should be ashamed of itself. I’m surprised some smart lawyers haven’t filed a class action on them. This is just WRONG. Being responsible has all but vanished. Thanks for your help!

      Yes, I agree. No excuse for poor design on something they've been building for years. One note, be sure to get the tape tight in the weld seam on the post about a quarter of an inch from edge of the interior plastic trim. That seems to be where the water channels. It is very difficult to see it doing that because it continues down into the floor pan behind the trim and the crimp corner of the lower part of the door opening. I hope this proves to be the source of your problem and solves your issue. VERY HARD to find. Nothing more irritating than a wet floor.

    Thank you!. A few days ago we had heavy rain and I ended up with 4" of water on my passenger floorboard. I made the mistake of parking my '16 JKU nose down hill, which is where my problem is the worst. The leak path you described was exactly how mine was. I'm going to try this fix, but I'm pretty sure you just solved my problem. I'll try to report back if I can find this post after the next rain storm.

      *** UPDATE *** I had some wide foam rubber that I used on my canopy that worked perfectly for this. I parked my Jeep with the nose downhill and ran a hose over the roof before and after installing the weather stripping. I can tell you that installing the weather stripping, just like shown in John Matthew's video, solves this leak. Thank you John for taking the time to make this video and sharing this solution. Now, I'm looking forward to the next rainstorm!

      @@cmlegend88 Sorry, I didn't think to make the video until after I did the repair. I'm happy to try to answer any questions you might have. Two things to think about. 1, be sure to get sponge tape so it will form tightly to the two metal surfaces that form the post where they overlap and create a slight elevation difference. Water will slip through the little void that might cause and get channeled inside instead of out. 2, be sure to go over the small existing rubber gasket that is held on with a plastic expandable pin so that the water is channeled over the gasket and not under. (I'm calling it a gasket but it is a small formed rubber cover over the crack where the windshield would fold away)
      Also, be sure to slant the rubber tape down toward the outside of the vehicle so the water will flow naturally along the top of the tape to the outer part of the vehicle.
      Good Luck. Hope it works for you.

      @@strayhound61 thanks for.taking the time to explain. I really appreciate it. I will see how it goes and if I still get water, I'll take it apart and redo it to the best of my knowledge. It's mostly for fall and spring since in the summer my doors are completely removed and stored

    Appreciate you posting this. I have a 2017 JKU and have the same issue of the water puddle on the passenger side floor mat. Mine didn't came with hardtop, but I did purchased a used one. Occasionally I'll get a little water leak in the middle of the freedom top but I'm pretty sure that has nothing to do with the water puddle on the floor mat. I'll have to take a look on the side panel as you had mentioned. Was your leak only shown when your vehicle is parked during a heavy rain?

    • @strayhound61
      @strayhound61  5 років тому +1

      Hi Brandon,
      Thanks for your question and comments. My top seemed to be leaking mostly during heavy rain and wind toward the right side and while sitting still. Although to be perfectly honest, it is hard to be certain that it didn't leak while it was being driven also. So far...still good, knock on wood.
      The mid sections leaks on the Freedom tops sometimes caused by not getting them aligned just right went tightening them down.
      Good luck. Hope this fix works for you.

    • @Airkoay
      @Airkoay 5 років тому +1

      @@strayhound61 Thanks John, I didn't noticed mine leaked while driving. The middle portion of the freedom panel on very few occasions I get leaks, even sometimes with just mild dew and hardly any rain. But as you said, it could be the alignment. I checked the seals and they seem to be fine over this past summer. Since it snowed here in PA, I didn't get the chance to look into the side seal as you described. Doesn't your Jeep comes with rubber floor mats? I don't supposed you have any pics you can share on how you have that rubber sealed in placed?

    • @strayhound61
      @strayhound61  5 років тому

      @@Airkoay Yea, we got a lot of snow here too yesterday. Yes, mine came with rubber floor mats. They make it hard to tell if you have a leak because the water was under them and I have to pull them up to see what's wet and what isn't (which is why I'm not sure if the water came in while driving). I could take pics if you like but I'll need to know where to send them. I think the biggest thing in making the leak stop is to keep the water from getting channeled between the rubber boot in the mid-section of the door jamb that is supposed to seal off the windshield when returned from the folded position. If you get the rubber tape and just angle it down toward the outside of the body and cover the top of the boot, it should keep the boot from channeling the water toward the inside of the body like I did in the video.

    I’m not clear on exactly where you put this tape. Did you remove the plastic trim material on the windshield post,and put it BEHIND it,then put it back?

    • @strayhound61
      @strayhound61  5 років тому

      Hi William, Thanks for watching and thanks for the question. I put the tape BEHIND the interior plastic trim that runs up and down along the windshield post but OVER the small rubber boot at the lower folding joint of the windshield. I did not take either off the car to do this. The tape is cut at a downward angle toward the outer part of the car so the top edge channels water down and away from the interior. It is a little hard to get the tape under the plastic trim, you have to pry it away momentarily while slipping the tape under it. I'll also add, we have been in several severe rain situations since doing this over a year ago now and no water inside. Woo hoo! I will say my neighbor has a Wrangler that leaks and her problems are different than mine with leaks over the center console and back (she has a 4-door). So this is just one solution for front mat wetness. Good luck. Hope this helps explain.

    • @plugger4945
      @plugger4945 5 років тому

      Sounds like you preyed up the plastic trim on the pillar(with a helper?),to get it behind the pillar. I’m sorry, I don’t mean to bother.

    • @strayhound61
      @strayhound61  5 років тому +1

      @@plugger4945 No bother, happy to help. I did prey up the plastic, but only with my finger. I had the piece of rubber tape ready to slip under it first. I only pealed off the paper on that side so I could hold onto it. It wasn't the easiest, but not the most difficult either. You could use a small piece of something to wedge it, plastic or wood, while you slip it under.

    • @strayhound61
      @strayhound61  4 роки тому

      Yes, leaks can be very frustrating. Drying out the carpet and padding takes forever. I'm not sure what you're asking me to show. You should be able to see everything in the video. There is nothing behind the trim you can't see in the video except for a small edge of the tape behind the plastic trim, about 1/4". If you go to the 2:55 point in the video on the right side door, the tape gets tucked under the plastic windshield post and onto the metal post. It then goes over the rubber joint boot below the plastic post trim. Hope this helps. If not I'll be happy to try to answer any additional questions. Good luck!

      @@onega2116 Yes, we are also on the east coast and except for a five week drought, we have had lots of rain also. That said, there are a dozen places the roof and doors can leak. It is a process of elimination that requires diligence in determining the source. I jokingly say they should just let them leak and put rain gutters at the bottom to channel the water out instead of onto the floor and carpets. It would be much easier. Again, good luck with yours.
