Fantastic song. As a metal head growing up in the 80s, all of 70s music that seemed "acceptable" was the harder stuff like Sabbath, Zeppelin etc. So it took me some time to discover those more "sophisticated" 70s rock bands like Supertramp, Steely Dan etc. Glad I did eventually.
I sometimes think that returning to that childlike sense of wonder is the whole purpose of our adult life. It's Dorothy Gale going back home from Oz. It's Adam & Eve re-entering the Gates of Eden.
Their concerts were unreal. I saw them a few times and each show was incredible. They are all exceptional musicians and performers their music was a huge part of my life at the time. Great reaction thank you. 🤟✌
Supertramp always has pretty interesting lyrics. They get intense, but their instrumentation is always unique and very creative. Really good stuff! Thanks for sharing this one. 🙂
Supertramp earned their superstar status one song, one record, at a time. This song from from the very successful album BREAKFAST IN AMERICA was their crowning jewel of the decade. Other songs like RUDY, HIDE IN YOUR SHELL, TAKE THE LONG WAY HOME, and the excellent musical journey of CHILD OF VISION are worth a listen. Keep that inner child open and alive for as long as you can, Maddie. It keeps the smile on your face. And that makes us all happy. Enjoy

This song brings back so many memories. And something I didn't expect listening to it again is how much more it says to me now all these years later. When this first came out, we were all excited by their unusual musical mixes and style. Now the words mean more to me than ever. Thanks for your reaction.
Awesome, I never really considered what he was saying, but as I teach myself to walk again, I realize that I took a lot for granted, but my daughter reminds me to remember and to dream and to appreciate the simple things...thank you for the reminder
An earlier song on the same general topic is "School". It winds up being emotional in a different way. My other favorite is Fool's Overture, but that is probably not one that people would react to among the first of Supertramp's songs.
Your analysis is perfect. Roger was sent away to boarding school for 10 years (Most middle & upper class boys are). He wrote this song in his late teens, before joining Supertramp.
Hi Maddy! You're killing it with your choices and reactions! Please check out their song "School" from the 1974 Crime of the Century album. It's a cool vibe and contrast to this one, one of my faves Thanks ✌️ ☮️ 🎸🎶 🎵 ❤️ 🇺🇸
Spot on analysis 👍🏻 it’s about how the innocence and wonder of childhood can quickly give way to worry and cynicism as children are taught to be responsible adults.
Yes indeed Maddy! There are joyous&light adults who are able to nurture the child within&around them. Many are artists of one type or another, who are productive in their chosen craft exactly cuz they can connect to their child.
I was 20 years old when the album, "Breakfast In America" which this song was on was released in 1979. The entire album is great. My favorite songs beside this one were "Goodbye Stranger", "Breakfast in America", and "Take the Long Way Home".
any song off of the album "Breakfast in America" from 1975 are absolutely stellar works of art .. very very good and worth listening to from the start to the finish which I did on many occasions in my youth
For me, this song and Styx's Grand Illusion will be forever linked. Both came out in roughly the same time period and both talk about getting caught up in the rat race instead of being yourself. The two actually started opening my eyes and significantly impacted my young life as far as what kind of person I wanted to be. Such good messaging in each
This song and album are a total classic, thanks for the reaction! Your talk about being a free spirit actually made me think of "Bad Sneakers" by Steely Dan. That's another classic hope you give it a listen too.
Yes Maddy. You're on it. It is an emotional song of doubt and introspection. You nailed it. Your analysis says a whole lot about your intellect. Love your thoughtful reactions.
This song has a very Taoist message: childhood wonder and innocence destroyed by societal responsibilities, then the realization (enlightenment) of rediscovering the wonder of life by returning to simplicity.
This song is the epitome of ' Hard times create strong men, strong men create good times, good times create weak men, and weak men create hard times'. This is a boomer anthem. We cannot afford this any more. Strong men will step up to the plate and fix things and then the 'Supertramps' of this world can sing their silly songs in a safe environment. Rinse and repeat

That kind of lyrics and upbeat songs are the brand of Supertramp.. I recommend you to listen to Rudy, School, Take the Long Way Home.... this band is amazing .. so much bangers!!
Roger wrote this to relate to his growing up and being sent away to a boarding school to be taught how to be a man and his questioning all that. An incredible juxtaposition of the heavy lyrics and the happy music
Not a big Supertramp fan but I like this song. To me the song describes an almost child like innocence in the beginning and as we grow up how society and politics makes us into programmed robots and labels us as 'radicals," "liberal," etc. I could be wrong but that's how I see the song.
It's funny you mention a cigarette. When i saw this tour in 1979, they sang Asylum and when he sings "lend me 15p, I'm dying for a smoke" one of the band is smoking and blows out a cloud of smoke and is hit with a spotlight at that moment.
That was co-founder Rodger Hodgson singing. He is the guitar player but no guitar here. Behind him on the other Keyboard is co-founder Rick Davies who sings Goodbye Stranger.
Saw them live 3Xs. First time was 1975 "Crime of the Century" tour when I was 15 years old. Still in the top 10 favorite concerts. Also saw "Even in the Quietest Moments" tour and "Breakfast in America" tour.
Great reaction. And they have a ton of great stuff. Check out one of their slightly earlier hits that was on the radio all the time when I was in grade school, I still love it to this day. Bloody Well Right.
Just listen to the lyrics of this masterpiece. Roger Hodgson is singing about being sent away to school as a boy and the emotional trauma he went through. It's a wonderful track.
Just Becauseness!! Just like the whistle!! I Like It! These guys have some good tunes. BLOODY WELL RIGHT!! A terrific song. So different I didn't know it was them! Great job! Next! 🕊️☮️😎
Watching from Oklahoma, USA. This is a pure discretion of libs today. How this song speaks to today and I enjoyed when I was younger. Please tell me who I am. I need you to lead me. The youth today.
Supertramp had a great run of four terrific LPs from 1974 to 1979 with Crime of the Century, Crisis? What Crisis?, Even in the Quietest Moments, and Breakfast in America. A curious blend of elements of prog and art rock and bluesy pop. More from the 1970s could include songs and albums by the bands Steely Dan and also 10cc. Plenty more, of course.
Maddy, I know you have reacted to Band Maid songs in the past, including "Dice", however, I hope you get to react to a UA-cam video of the song in a two-song clip from this past summer's Lollapalooza music festival in Chicago. The two-song clip is "Dice/Hate?" from their one hour performance has gone VIRAL on UA-cam and the internet. (Don't worry, Band Maid has not blocked the video). During "Dice" there are amazing solos from Misa, the bassist, and Kanami, the lead guitarist. At the interlude between the two songs, Akane, the drummer keeps pounding her drum kit and transitions seamlessly into "Hate?"( a new song from their recent EP). During "Hate?" there is an epic "call and respond " duel between Misa and Kanami. This may be one of the best live performances from a band this entire year. It is definitely worth a listen and reaction.
I love it when you react to bands I was listening to in my teens. Thank you.❤ Loved your analysis and you are bang on. Too often we forget the “child within” and lose our playfulness.
One of the best albums ever, every single track is freakin fantastic
The fact that Supertramp is seldom mentioned on any “greatest” list is criminal.
I agree. You could almost say it's the crime of the century.

This song was written primarily by the band's Roger Hodgson, who based the lyrics on his experiences being sent away to boarding school for ten years.

It is an overall great song and the saxophone just kills it!
Oh yeah, that sax intro is downright filthy, love it!
