Petty Officer Travis Obendorf was injured during this rescue and would later succumb to his injures approximately one month later. There were a number of people on the Alaska Mist (22) and a number needed to be evacuated, some went by helicopter. When the Cutter Waesche arrived, it was decided that the remaining non-essential crew would be removed via a 24ft Zodiac boat. With five more Alaska Mist crew and other Coast Guard members aboard, the Zodiac returned back to the cutter with Obendorf at the bow. Rough seas cause a collision between the boat and a capture net at the rear ramp of the cutter, causing a serious head injury to Obendorf even though he was wearing a helmet. Medical treatment was provided and he was later flown to Seattle but he died approximately month later.
Damn. Thanks for the story. RIP.
as sad as the update is, im still thankful for the update. R.I.P P.O Travis Obendorf
RIP
God Bless this Hero.
So sorry for him but I'm grateful the coast guard were there and their passion and commitment to save any who fall victims of the sea, land and air. R.I.P. Good sir we salute you!!
Thank you for your service to all coast guard members!! Best wishes for the crew member with head injury!! You guys are very. Much appreciated!! From a newbedford mass scollopper!!
Unfortunately, the petty officer succumbed to his injuries about a month after this incident.
@@actionboy6934 That is so incredibly tragic. Rest in peace Travis. You died a hero, selflessly saving other people lives.
May he rest in peace
I'm a veteran and you never want to hear these things happen to anyone. R.I.P. young man, you are a true hero. 🇺🇸
Rest In Peace officer Travis Obendorf ….. thank you for your service coast guard ! 😪
Rest easy, Petty Officer Obendorf…thank you for your service and sacrifice.
Thank you so much for the Work you do to help These Vessels in Distress.God Bless!
Hats off to the coast guard and all they do.
Thank you Travis God be with you always
Rest in peace officer. Thanks for your service.
Coast Guard does a great job. I was station on a SAR unit for the Coast Guard back in 1972 and went out on a lot of missions like this
thank you for your Service.
Petty Officer Travis Obendorf (BM3) End of Watch Wednesday, December 18, 2013
Thank You for your service, and sacrifice.
As a former Navy sailor we give the Coast Guard a lot of crap, but those men and women are important. Salute to the PO3, they will stand your watch.
A more important job than the navy and more dangerous also.
I work in EMS aviation. These pilots and crew members, flight medics, flight nurses and rescue are the best.
I just flight follow. I'm amazed on what these people do.
Thank you for all the brave things y'all do- we have the best people in the world and we are all so lucky to be Americans-
I think we are all just lucky to experience life regardless of our nationality.
@@logangx9319 Agreed, though we cant forget the contributions the U.S.A. have given to make the modern world possible.
@@MarcABrown-tt1fp I do agree.
Thank you, everyone in the coast guard.
Thanks. ✌🏻👊
My dad was a Coast Guardsman retired 1979.. As a fisherman i have my respect for my dad and his brothers and sisters
I big salute to the us coatguard and petty officer travis i salute you your family and brothers rip ...from the dutch coastguard based in the Netherlands.
Dank U Meneer! I served with the USCG for 24 years!
@@stansmith4054 thank you for your service sir , I see us all as brothers thank you for your comment sir
rest in peace PO3 Travis Obendorf. Thank you for what you did.
Indeed
So sad :( condolences to his family
Rest in peace Petty Officer Travis Obendorf. Forever on patrol.
Miss seeing you on the show Edgar. Your a good fisherman!
You're*
He shouldn't have forced himself on a 16 year old girl.
@@dannyfrogshe was as willing as could be
Probably could’ve done a little better if there wasn’t a camera guy in the rescue copter taking up room for essential folks
i was onboard the Stratton when this happened i remember the Capitan going over the 1MC while we were underway letting us know what happened on the Waesche.
Nice job #CoastGuard
Glad to see Edgar back.
This was 2013. Sad to report Edgar won't be returning to the show.
He will never be back
Oh man, not Trav, dang it !!
its extremely hard to Hover a heli with no wind let alone 35 knot wind
They've fit 26 in 1 jayhawk H-60 in 2015 in the gulf of Mexico.
Thank God and the Coast Guard for their service, because if it wasn't for them we wouldn't be able to enjoy the bounty of the sea. Which unfortunately is out of my price range now. But it was good while it lasted. Lol
R.I.P. petty officer Obendorf
All the best to the Injured Coast Guard member..
He succumbed due to his injuries i just read
Most people don't like the coast guard but the rescue guys like these aren't the ones who are inspecting your boats and writing tickets. They are like the seals or rangers of the coast guard.
Monte did what ,rail dump?
People disparage the CG a LOT. But some of the stuff they do equals or rivals in some cases many modern military activities in danger
They and the Navy tend to trend lower as far as self inflicted death but in active duty their deaths arent as low as one might think
Perf
So in a rescue situation cameramen should not be taking up seats on the helicopter. Just a thought.
Not just the cameraman but the cameraman filming the cameraman
Edit: Also the cameraman on deck filming the same basket the cameraman in the helicopter is filming while being filmed by the other helicopter cameraman
Edit2: Which is all already being filmed by a fisherman with a cellphone. Well worth the expense
It was so unsafe they were fine for 5 hours
What? The time they were safe doesnt really matter... they could be a few hours away from drifting to shore and being ripped apart on rocks, or only a few minutes from a large wave swamping the ship and sinking it!
Tell me you don’t know how the ocean works without telling me you don’t know how the ocean works.
What happens to the boat? Tow?
I hope all the vessel captains out of Alaska donates to his go fund ... because of wht and they continue to do for rhe fishing industry
CG members don't need a gofundme they have SGLI life insurance of almost half a mil
So if the boat would just be broke and they got rescued would they just leave the boat? Or would the captain or owner try to come back to fix it if it didn't sink?
How are they putting 6 in , room for no more?
Rescue the Most Dangerous Job/
SEATTLE - The Coast Guard says one of its officers who was injured last month while rescuing crew members from a disabled fishing vessel off Alaska has died of his injuries.
In a statement, the Coast Guard said Petty Officer Third Class Travis Obendorf died Wednesday at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle.
In this photo provided by Coast Guard Cutter Waesche, Petty Officer 3rd Class Travis Obendorf is seen. Obendorf died in a Seattle hospital on Wednesday, Dec. 18.

The 166-foot Alaska Mist suffered a mechanical failure and was adrift north of Amak Island off the Alaska Peninsula. Obendorf's cutter, the Waesche (WAY-shee) responded, evacuated non-essential members of the 22-person crew, then took the Mist under tow to Dutch Harbor.
The Coast Guard says Obendorf was injured Nov. 11 during the first passenger transfer while recovering a small boat. He was flown to Anchorage and transferred to the Seattle hospital on Dec. 6.
His cutter's commanding officer, Capt. John McKinley, said Obendorf's willingness to help others "even amidst the dangerous environment of the Bering Sea," embodies the Coast Guard's core values.
What happens to the vessel that lost power? Sea tow??
Most likely I was a bm2 in the coast guard and when that happens we out them in tow
На сколько я понял в заголовке написано, что краболов полностью потерял энергию. Однако при спасении экипажа видно, что освещение на верхней палубе и матче работает?
Lost propulsion
@@johnaustin6673 Ок. Thank you!
If they’re evacuating the crew from the boat, what happens with the boat? They just let it drift out there or come back and try to repair it?
Usually try to tow it in. I’m sure they will but something is causing them to evacuate instead
@@washedupwarvet2027 I've also heard of them sinking ships that are just adrift at sea. I was truly curious if the.could tow it back with a tug from that distance from shore or if they would sink it.
Oceangoing tug once the weather improves.
there’s Edgar the kiddie toucher
Thought Edgar had to retire
Still has interests in the boat, but forced off the show.
This was 2013
I dont get why these vessels don't have life-boats they can transfer to in these situations.
Yeah...
Which one would you like to be in during extremely rough sea with wave could just go over it
A floaty dingy that can be fill with water
Or a tough boat build to float
Only in extreme emergency like a boat capsized and sink that people use those so that they can be rescued afterwards
First legitimate comment.
WORD!
They only have so much room for survivors, but have room for a cameraman?
And 99.9% of the time they have enough space. Even without a cameraman on board they wouldn’t be able to pick them all up in one go.
Helicopters only have so much space on board.
@@cowboy10uk Yeah but it looked like they showed up with a cameraman. Wouldn’t it have Ben better to reserve that seat for another fisherman, especially if they find themselves working against the clock and the boat is going down?
What happened to the the?

Why didn’t they drop them on the ship that was close by
It was too risky to land with that many aboard.
Drama
Did they sink the boat incase it stayed afloat
looks like the boat was towed to port and repaired. I checked online and it does appear to still be a functioning vessel
@@FordRangerGuy2011 then why jump off and waste thousands on coast guard fee
@@denniswilder3014 because at the time abandoning ship was actually the safest option for them. The ship was adrift in rough seas and could have rolled over at any time. It was safer to pull them off than it was to leave them on. In rough seas like that you don’t gamble with the lives of your crew. They said they couldn’t fix the breakdown at sea so the captain chose the safety of his crew over trying to save the ship. Ships can be replaced but people can’t. If you had half an ounce of common sense and paid attention to the video you would realize that
@@FordRangerGuy2011 they never stated the the vessel was being towed in in the video they made it seem all is lost.as a retired deck hand of 30 plus years have stayed on the boat while being towed dead sticked to keep vitals working to save our ship
@@denniswilder3014 I know they never stated the vessel was towed. I did some research online and found the name of the vessel and then went on marine traffic and found that the vessel is still active as of a couple weeks ago. This incident happened years ago so it’s not hard to put 2 and 2 together to figure out that the ship was salvaged and repaired and is still afloat today
old shi te repeated.
Amazing how the coast guard has a camera crew already on the chopper .... Not staged at all......
And the show just happened to have a full tv filming crew at the coastguard HQ when the call came in? staged....
