    What other Coastguard services ask the boat captain to do is to go flat out - it stops the boat from swaying side to side and makes the boat more stable. That's easy for me to say sitting on a seat watching this - however I'm just saying what others do.

    • @AmericanTestConstitution
      @AmericanTestConstitution 5 років тому +1

      I've been to the Bering Sea and I've never heard of "flagging out".

    • @cepaasch
      @cepaasch 4 роки тому +2

      That is a displacement hull, going faster wouldn't do much if anything for vessel stability.

    • @QemeH
      @QemeH 4 роки тому

      Well, what the original comment MIGHT refer to is that boats are often advised to keep a certain speed during rescue in high seas to maintain maneuverability. Maybe to captains in over their head this is most easily communicated to as: "Go flat out!" But it really is: "Go with the wind and keep at a speed such that the waves aren't faster than you."
      [Yes, technically it's better for maneuverability to "take" the wave at a good angle, but that induces a lot of unpredictable motion and makes maintaining a hover over the boat neigh impossible.]
