I just purchased my G42 and fired 50 rounds of hard ball and 12 rounds of Hornady Critical Defense with no problems. Gun did push left on me, the trigger has to be mastered. As far as the 380 vs any other round ..... if I knew I was going to get into a gun fight I would take my AR 15 and my XDM 9MM. But when I go shopping with the wife the 380 is my choice. It will do the job and can be carried easily in a pair of beach shorts. I think I am going to like this gun!

Pulling to the left is a user issue. The "platform" is smaller and it requires you to grip it just a tad different than you do with a larger pistol. Once you really have the time to train with it, it is an issue that is easily corrected.

G42 owners can always drift their rear sight to the RIGHT to compensate for this.I was even using a POI up and to the right for a short time, until I learned to compensate with more reasonable measures.

Shooting to the left is shooter error, usually trigger finger related for a right handed person.

    • @tchrishyde
      @tchrishyde 10 років тому

Sure.....usually, but when the rear sight is not aligned to the front sight, it tends to move the POI. Might be something to think about considering these are not factory installed sights. Have you ever installed a new optic of any sort? If not, I can tell you that dialing in a rear sight on a pistol is not like making turret clicks on glass,.

An excellent, intelligent and well done video and test! My hats off to the crew that reloaded the magazines 333.33 times! You've talked about the gun shooting to the left. It's been my experience that in the small guns we've noticed that the light weight of the gun combined with the shooter's trigger pull will cause this too. This test answered some other questions I had about this Cinderella gun, I like that name too! It fits! Maybe I missed it but did you state the bullet weight? What generation 42 were you shooting? Some of the earlier 42s had been reported as having ejection problems. Looks like Glock listened and the later models don't stovepipe. I have a 42 and have been pleased with it. Thank all of you for this test. This was great!

As long as you use the right ammo it likes I’ve had no issues with my g42 or my g48. I’ve seen some people having issues with the g42 but only to eventually realize it was the ammunition. Some casings have a more narrow crest on the base where the ejection gets hung up causing the shell not to pop out as fast or as smooth as possible . Also not going under 90gr in your ammo will help

Thank you for the torture test. I have 1200 rounds through mine already. I wouldn't even consider carrying a pistol without 500 flawless rounds. All 1200 have been with no failures- with 1 exception. I use the new, all copper barnes tac-xpd 80 gr hollow point rounds in my other .380s. The glock will not cycle these. After firing, the slide remains closed with the spent case inside. After 4 consecutive failures, I switched off to Cor-Bon. Since discovering this, I noticed another review stating the same exact info.

All major UA-cam channels have to tell me it's reliable and then at LEAST 5 torture test have been performed by me personally. THEN it has too successfully shoot 3 caliber including the one it was intended to shoot. That's just my .03 though

Bought one of these last weekend and have put 250 rounds through it so far. I made sure to hunt the gun show for the most recently produced one and got one that was test fired in November 2014, has the latest mags (marked 02) and updated slide lock (-1). So far it has been reasonable but not as reliable as yours. It definitely hated Remington Ultimate Defense 102 gr, and S&B FMJ (although the S&B was old ammo so it might not be the gun). I have fired 150 rounds of Monarch Brass FMJ (PPU) and had 2 instances of slide locking rearward (NOT caused by my thumb) and one instance of round not fully feeding into the chamber. 35 rounds of Winchester white box with no failures, 35 rounds of Hornady Critical with the only problem being the firing pin blocking the first round because the gun was tilted down while chambering. I just polished the feed ramp and have some other ammo on order but as of right now it is borderline on making me confident enough to depend on it...

Hey Guys, I know I'm commenting on an older video, but I wanted to say a couple of things. I am now retired but was a firearms instructor for civilians and law enforcement for 40 years, owned a school, gun shop and range, etc. and was a cop. I personally think the .380 is a great choice for some shooters and has been underrated by many. Yes, it is less powerful than a 9mm, probably by about 20%, but so what? As a citizen's daily CCW weapon where the goal in an attack is to break contact and escape, it's just fine. As a lawman's backup gun I'd say it's good at close quarters to save one's life with. When I was on patrol I carried my Glock 9mm duty gun, and a Glock 26 on my ankle, but I'd be fine with the G42.
Next, backyard testers on the internet dump on the .380 because it doesn't penetrate the "required" 12 inches. This is true, but who cares? That is a standard for a patrol round and the .380 is not a patrol officer's caliber. I was paid to do professional FBI level testing for years, and almost none of these guys are doing the tests correctly. The FBI does not, and never has, used four layers of denim in their tests. They do a much more reasonable "Heavy Clothing" test that approximates actual layered heavy clothing. There are a lot of good rounds (I use Speer Gold Dot 90 Grain JHP's) that have no problem giving 10-11 inches of penetration with reliable expansion to a half inch. I'm fine with that for this gun's role. There are other excellent choices and they keep getting better all the time. As Dave Spaulding once said, "You shoot a guy with a .380 and he is going to remember your name." So yes, if I run into some bad guy with 50 extra pounds of prison muscle on him, if I shoot him in the chest twice and he is not impressed, I'll just have to shoot him in the face. No problem, I know how to do that. It's called a "failure drill{.
But, but, there are 9mm pistols the same size as the Glock 42! Yep, I own several of them. But as these guys mentioned in the video, they are a bear to learn to shoot well, and hard to pull the slide back on. I have both a G42 and a G43, and they both work fine. But the G42 is simply easier for my students to do well with. And not just for women. I'm 65 now and after 50 years of shooting, arthritis in my hands is pretty bad. But the Glock 42 is still easy for me to shoot. And I trust it out to 25 yards if I have to take a longer shot, because the gun is just a little bit bigger. In that respect it is like the Glock 26, it just shoots like a big gun.
But, but, it's low capacity, I need more rounds! Okay, do what I do, carry an extra magazine or two. They are both cheap and light. And if you don't mind your gun being about a half inch longer in the grip, buy some of Larry Vickers' Tango Down 2-shot extensions. They cost $25 each but are worth it, and any idiot can install them in 10 minutes. I know, because I can be an idiot on mechanical things and I did it just fine. I tested them with hundreds of rounds and they work perfectly. I added them to my spare magazines making them 8-rounders, but if you are carrying on the belt or inside the waistband, you can use them in-gun and make your weapon a 9-rounder. That ought to be enough, because as a private citizen you are supposed to be shooting and getting away, right? With the stock magazine I can easily pocket carry the Glock 42.
Finally, on reliability, my testing shows me the same as the video above. Mine was 500 rounds because I had to buy ammo, but no failures of any kind. Some Glock 42's had early functioning problems because of bad magazines. Glock sorted this out a long time ago, and even today if you have one of these old magazines and send it in, Glock will replace it for you.
Over the years I've owned or tested at least two dozen .380 pistols, and the Glock 42 is by far my favorite. She may not be pretty, but she is reliable, useful, and comfortable. By the way, mine does not pull to the left, but requires trigger discipline to keep it from doing that. This requires lots of dry fire to achieve. In a fight however, I doubt that it will pull left enough to matter. And if anyone is interested, I bought mine from an LE distributor brand new in 2018. Everything worked properly from day one.

If a gun “shoots left”, in all likelihood it is due to how the operator is holding the firearm and his/her finger position on the trigger. This makes it all the more likely, when you yourself said that you did not encounter that with the 17 and full size Glocks. That you encountered that with compact and subcompact Glocks.

It's all about the US single stack, plastic, .380 acp market niche: Ruger LC380, Bersa BP380cc, S&W Bodyguard, etc.etc. Glock wanted a piece of the pie. (not talking about LCP or Kahr p380)
In countries where the 9x18/9x17 calibers are the maximum allowed, nobody in their right mind will prefer the G42 over a G28 or a G25.
I prefer the Bersa BP380cc or the Ruger LC380. They are the same size as the G42, but out of the box they can hold 8 rounds. instead of the G42's 6 rounds....

So how can you have a Gen 4 Glock 42 when there was no Gen 3 nor Gen 2 of that pistol? There has only been Gen 1 of the Glock 42.

Upon seeing this video,I purchased this ammo for my Glock 42. I am not blaming the ammo yet, buy my Glock fails to feed about 2 times per magazine. It just does not push the next round out of the mag, which to me means, the recoil spring is probably too stiff, or the ammo too weak to fully cycle the slide. The ammo is clean. I have also had issues with the slide locking back, which I know is a gun issue, and yes I was sure to keep my thumb away from the slide lock. I will not get rid of my ammo, but I am disappointed in the Glock and will be selling it.

+pickin4you Same - my Glock 42 is an utter piece of shit. Sent it back to Glock where they upgraded some parts and the magazines, and it still has a very rough time making it 6 shots without a FTE. Multiple experienced shooters all have the same issue. Wish I would have never purchased this garbage gun. If you Google it, you'll find that the Glock 42 is plagued with issues. This one must be one of the mythical, unicorn 42s that actually does what a gun is supposed to do. BTW, I'm a HUGE Glock fan - have a Gen 3 G19, and I LOVE it. Now that is a quality gun.

Only had 150rds through mine and have no lie about 50 failures. From FTE FTL and stovepipes. Aggravating but I love the gun still. Used several brands of ammo and convinced it's the gun. Honestly think mine has too much spring for the little .380 round
