my friend got jacket from his uncle in USA, a starter NY hockey team jacket with big ass logo of liberty statue on back. maaaan he was king of eastern europe for a while in the 90s XD we had bootleg charlotte hornets jackets on black markets but nuthin similiar to the legit one- it was shiny, well made and even zipper was wth starter logo. he even got nickname "jackson" because it sounded american back days.
Let me take some of you millennials and GenZ’s back, while being observed by Gen X: it was early 1990s out in Far Rockaway Queens, it’s late in autumn, me and a couple of friends are all wearing starter from the caps down to the satin jackets along with some air forces of course. Spending Saturday evening bouncing around house parties, having fun looking and feeling stylish. Those were some real times.
Yup, I'm GenX and owned one (Hornets). I ONLY wore it on my college campus in Maine back then, being from Queens, NYC because wearing a Starter attracted trouble and attention. In '89/'90 some knucklehead would start a beef with you on the train or park because they saw your jacket. Feels strange remembering those times.
Yup... mines was black with a navy blue elastic band instead of gray.... had to keep the strap on me cuz everyone wanted it... already got stuck up for my starters bangles coat
My first starter was the red satin Sixers jacket late 70’s. Then got a all black Raiders satin mid 80’s and 1989 I got a Red satin UNLV jacket. Just got a Yankees satin off homage few weeks ago. Brings back the vibes of those jackets but I think quality was better back in the day
Bell Biv Devoe video “Poison” was like a whole Starter ad for their apparel 😂. I still have my SF Giants jacket with a bunch of clips. Amazing sports wear indeed.
I remember the DJ Jazzy Jeff commercials for Starter. "First you grab the hat. Then you grip the hat. Then you flip the hat. Make sure it's a Starter hat. Then you raise the hat. Then you slam the hat. Then twist the hat. Then you turn the hat. Then you spin the hat. Then you smooth the hat."
Man I remember when the whole SnapBack jerking era came along and hat club used to sell real vintage Starter snapbacks! It opened up a whole new world for me in my early teens.
Still own and wear 4 to this day , London Monarchs overcoat , Raiders 1/4 zip jacket , Notre Dame 1/4 zip jacket and Golden Knights coaches jacket. There’s a massive market for them in the U.K. and Europe still.
Nike has a monopoly on the basketball shoe markets, and jerseys too cause they been making nfl jerseys since 2012 after reebok then they took over the nba jersey making contract after that and now for the last 2 yrs make mlb jerseys too and it seems like the nfl jersey quality went down and they use that recycled polyester bs and made the prices go real high too but fanatics actually manufacture nikes jersey for them but fanatics also makes mitchell and ness jerseys too. Nike doesn't need to be greedy with there prices though when u got the sneaker market locked down with Jordan shoe brand too if anything there prices should be lower not price gouging cause there shit isint even made in america it's made in china or some other Asian country.
Nike and Mitchel & Ness have gone down on quality. I really wish MLB jerseys stuck with Majestic. At this point Nike is owning all pro sports and I don't like it.
I still remember when my big bother went off to college and left me his Baylor Starter jacket. Way too big on me but I still wore that thing until it died lol
I wanted a Charlotte Hornets Starter jacket SSSSOOOOOOOOOOOO bad!😂😂😂 But once they started killing people for them, my mom wouldn’t even think about letting me have one.
@@bigtoxiclove3237 “Well hello! My name is _____. How are you? I would love to know your IG, if you’re ok with that.” is typically how that would work.
Dude, I had starter this and that. I had a Bears parka, 49ers pullover jacket, White Sox button down vinyl jacket in grammar school and by high school which was 93 to 97 for me. Starter populator started to dim by that time. Shit Starter used to make shoes as well if I remember correctly. I never owned a pair. Now you have so many hat companies. It was really good quality products.
Back in the 90’s I was metal guy hated rap but loved sports. I was the only long haired guy in Doc Martens “ way before they became trendy” wearing a starter cap and jacket.
My brother had the all white with red letters Chicago Bulls Starter jacket. We went to go see Tougher than Leather when the movie theaters were downtown in Chicago. We had to leave early because them GDs from Cabrini Green started wildin' 😂
@@TRAINRUNNA1 😂 haha. Luv the story 👍 well tell me you remember 2pac in Naughty by Nature's video "Uptown Anthem"? Rocking the red Bull's Starter jacket with matching red Cross Colour jeans ?? 🤣😂
Got a black and blue Carolina Panthers starter jacket as a kid on my birthday. It was first year when Carolina and Jacksonville came out.. That jacket was hard!
The 90’s was around the time production moved overseas for a lot of retail sports jerseys. Despite the change, Starter was able to maintain a high standard of quality. Their El Salvador-made jerseys were still very nice products. It probably helped that at the time the NFL did not consolidate under a single brand, thus no monopoly.
I still think Starter is dope. When I was a kid I had a Steelers coat and Raiders pullover windbreaker. My bro also gave me a Bulls and Blackhawks parka jerseys. I ordered a Notre Dame Coat a few winters back. I would like to get more Starter stuff.
I finally got my mom to agree to get me a starter coat. We went to the store and almost all that was left was a New Orleans saints jacket. But it will still awesome and I was just glad to have one.
I have a Redskins Starter jersey. Wish I still had my charcoal Saints Starter parka, the design was unique and subtle. My classmates had the Bears and Vikings ones, looked great.
me and my homies kinda started a wave in our HS with vintage caps (late 2000s/early 2010s - not bragging just telling the truth). We always knew Starter was where it was at with the hats. I only have one left today but still wear it frequently.
I had a white Miami Hurricanes pull over, and a black Chicago Bulls bomber. I was the coolest kid on my block back in the day. The quality of the starters back then set the bar, and the main brands couldn’t even compete. Miss those jackets and hats fasho, they need to make a comeback.
I loved that stuff from seeing it on Yo! MTV Raps. In 1993, MY GF dad was off on a trip to the states and begged him to bring me back a cap, but had to be STARTER...still have it in the cupboard.
When I was early in my military reserve career, the Army PX used to sell Starter clothes exclusively. I still miss the Atlanta 1996 Olympics Green and White Starter Jacket that I bought with the hat!
Starter was popping even in NZ in the 90s, and class mate was a fence for the dudes thieving them, so he had tons of clean ones. The Charlotte Hornets jacket was the one to have back then. I had a Duke starter cap, knowing very little of who Duke was beyond the odd small article in Sports Illustrated, so the Christian Laetner 30 for 30 was a real eye opener! I have a Michigan Wolverines jersey now, so I guess I've come full circle.
Around 1992 I had the bulls starter parka in middle school. The pullovers were popular but it was the parkas that really meant something. The most hyped were the all black parkas with the hoods and the logo on the chest and big logo and on the back. Even the color matching little cord locks mattered. I collect starter jackets now. Nostalgia is real.
I had a Raiders starter jacket 🧥 when I was a kid. Sadly I out grew it and starter stopped making them. But wearing starter now is nostalgic. Starter hats and jackets scream 90's 😊
Thanks for the explanation. I remember Starter was the shit back in the late 80s and early 90s. I also remember my parents being reluctant to buy me a Starter jacket because of stories about kids getting killed for their Starter jackets and Jordans. I remember being shocked the first time I saw Starter gear in Walmart in the early 2000s. I hope the quality and brand bounce back.
Georgetown Starter hats & pullover in 91 was the height of elementary school fashion! Man those were so cool!!! 😁. And the jackets had to have the metal Starter logo thing hanging off the zipper to be official. Lol
Even tho I didn’t grew up in the 90’s brands like starter, sports specialties, pro player, logo athletic to me are still better than todays brands (new era, Mitchell and ness, 47) 90’s kids y’all so lucky 😂
Yeah, when I was in middle school (say '92-'96), Starter was THE brand to rock, more than Adidas or Nike or anything like that. I myself had the Montreal Canadians jacket - my favorite hockey team at the time. I have often wondered what happened to Starter, which this video explains finally :)
The Starter pullover coats/jackets back in the early 90’s was the dopest piece of your outfit. Those and the kicks. Anyone else old enough to remember the Pro Player jackets? They were like the Starter jackets except they had the mascot going up and down the arms of the jacket. Whatever team mascot logo would be a buck of them that went up and down the back of the sleeves. I liked the Pro Player ones better than the Starter jackets for that reason alone. Had both as a kid but I always loved those jackets. As a Ky boy I had a UK Wildcats one of course but I also had a Cowboys Starter jacket, Norte Dame and Miami Pro Player jackets and they were sick with the Cane bird or the Fighting Irishman logo going up the sleeves. Man I miss those days. The world was so much better. Also I can’t remember what brand did the big head little body t shirts. Y’all remember them? The NBA players and NFL and MLB players t shirts that had a cartoon like look and had giant heads with little/regular size bodies. Those t shirts were the shit back then!!! Also anyone else remember Big Johnson shirts back in the 90’s?😂😂
My Uncle Jerry Bought Me My 1st Starter Jacket. I Thought It Was Going To Be A RAIDERS Starter Jacket But It Was The New NHL Expansion Team Named The San Jose Sharks.
Around 1993 to 1994 Starter Pull Overs were the coolest of the cool. Bulls Packers and absolutely the teal Charlotte Hornets were everywhere. Wish I still had mine
Man this takes me back. I had a lightning San Diego Chargers hat back in middle school. Never could afford a jacket. I remember the holy trinity of sportswear back then was Starter, Logo Athletic, and Apex. To me, Starter's light started to fade when Walmart started carrying their products. Just didnt seem very premium anymore
When you said Triple Fat Goose, I busted out laughing😂 Gen X in the house. October 18, 1980♎ I only had Starter Tshirts and a couple of hats because the 90s was WILD in SE & Eastside San Antonio. So my parents weren't having it with the middle school and HS drama. Especially since I wanted the Raiders jacket. Hell even the Shorts Sets were kinda tricky too!! Fun Times back then man. Shout Out to you homie in North Texas!! We lived in Mesquite in '88-Spring '89. New Subscriber!!
Living in Australia, we really looked up to US culture in the 90's, I'm always on the lookout for Starter, Sports Specialties, Logo Athletic etc. products. Mainly college and minor league teams, not because of the value, but more the novelty, because all that was available to us was big market teams at the time (Orlando Magic, Chicago Bulls, Dallas Cowboys etc.). Personally, I think, unless Starter scores another major contract they won't be the brand they want to be, the brand they once were. Great vid. keep it up.
P.S. I'm not a Cowboys fan. I had SF 49ers pullover, Charlotte pullover, Raiders jacket, and Bulls pullover. But the Cowboys won 3 out of 4 SB towards the end of starters run.
The early 90s. The peak seemed to be the late 80s 88-89 through early 90s. I was just starting the teen era late 80s so saw that era in person. That Hornets jacket on the front of thumbnail great choice of pics.
Still have my old school Raiders satin.. used to be huge on me, now it's perfect fit 😂. My Raiders parka and Bulls parka were beat up I wore those too much well into 2010s
Omg, Starter was the sht in the late 80s - mid 90s!!! I still remember my first Starter jacket which was black with the original iconic Charlotte Hornets logo ...
I hade like a million collage starter hats… i had like 20 different hats as a kid. Oakland A’s Yankee, NY Giants. But I only had one pullover starter winter coat… THE BUFFALO BILLS… That jacket made me a fan till this day of the bills. My mother paid 100$ for it and I’ll never forget that day or where my mother got me that coat from… A flee market in the Bronx… by Co op city… IYKYK… I was a little bummed out it wasn’t a Giants coat… but then Buffalo made it to 3 more superbowls so I looked dope in that coat…
I remember my mom buying me my first Starter jacket on my birthday .... it was the classic Georgetown Hoyas. Man, you couldn't tell me NOTHING back in them days when I had that on LOL
I had A Warriors Starter Jacket in the 87 I had About 30 Starter Jackets in the 80s I was fresh as hell in Middle School and High School I had the Matching Shoes too I got Robbed Twice in Midday School Jumped at the Candy store on wildermere between Pingree and Philadelphia and on west Grand Blvd By Northwestern I was too fresh for a Young Boy in the 80s
I had a Magic and a Nuggets Starter jacket. At school dances in the 90s they wouldn't let anyone in with Starter jackets. The Starter sets were also huge. They fell off hard to me when they started selling Starter at Walmart.
I remember in Memphis cats used to get robbed for starter jackets..The Hooded joints, the trench coat ones, and the regular joints! That shhh was crazy
I’ve never seen anything else like it till this day. My brother played basketball. We’d go to his games and they would be packed full of people wearing starter jackets when they were at their peak. I wanted one so bad I used to count the number of people who had one in a full gym. I think my dad knew I was gon turn to crime if he didn’t get me one and he caved. I’ll never forget , my daddy came to get me on a Friday at bout 6:30 pm . The starter jackets at foot locker would be kept on the ceiling, the highest rack they could find. The store employees would have to use these tong like devices to reach up there and grab the one you wanted. At 1st I got the exact one I wanted or close enough. I wanted an la raiders but there was no way you were gettin one of those, they sold out the minute they were back in stock, so I got a la kings. My mom and dad both said it was too exact and I would grow out of it. I took it back and got a unlv rebels. Now there I was , a kid , walking around in a very popular jacket that an adult could fit . Where I’m from if you had a starter jacket you were gettin robbed, period. The question was never “if”, the question was always “when”. I got robbed for my starter , but my sister and my cousin went got it back for me. I was 12 goin on 13 . I lost that jacket in a fire .
Crazy that Starter peak was after we had already had our trend... late 80s until 93 when i graduated high school was the biggest years for me personally

Great vid. keep it up.
Thx fam, yeah we had access to tons of it. I still had a few starter hats that I recently sold for $100-$200 each.
I still have my collection of Starter hats from 1992-1995 and a few I've found on Ebay. Probably around 20 or so in total.
Never had the jacket, but I had the hats and the t-shirts. Starter was HUGE back in the day.
Parker jackets with the lace stoppers or beads, I found a nice Sf Giants Starter jacket
This was excellent 👏 👌 👍🏾 🙌
Thank you so much 😊
I still got my OG Dallas Cowboys Starter jacket. I get it dry cleaned every year and only wear it on special occasions. It still looks new.
P.S. I'm not a Cowboys fan. I had SF 49ers pullover, Charlotte pullover, Raiders jacket, and Bulls pullover. But the Cowboys won 3 out of 4 SB towards the end of starters run.
I seriously miss my Chiefs pullover. Went great with my Zubaz pants and hat!
The real classics don't fall.its been back up.s/o to my Blues starter jacket..see Champion,Levis, Tommy,Polo etc.
Still got my Hornets jacket.
I remember starter, champion, & russell they use to run sports attire!!!!!!
Logo Athletic too, they all were the shit.
That satin Georgetown blue white and gray was everything!!
I remember my mom buying me my first Starter jacket on my birthday .... it was the classic Georgetown Hoyas. Man, you couldn't tell me NOTHING back in them days when I had that on LOL
Cool video dude! 43 & still want some 90's starter NFL jerseys
Just saw some Starter jackets in Macy’s a week ago and they were 🔥🔥
Orlando magic starter gear is my favorite the jacket is a must have for any starter collection
Mannn I miss the 90's bruh 😮💨💯💯. The best times of most of our lives
Hornets pullover with the velcro pocket in the middle. That was probably as cool as I ever got in elementary school.
