They probably have to find again their way in something similar. After all that's what we think about when we think of a Cadillac: the '50s "Space/Jet Age"-styled, uncompromisedly luxurious, almost outrageous giants of the road. By returning to their roots, they might find a buyer niche which actually is a bit ignored by the major automakers, but still exists.

Cadillac, Lincoln and Buick suffered the same problems. Companies cheapened the brand. Not only in looks, but in performance. Kept the luxury price tag.
Another price increasing item, not mentioned, is the decades of Government intrusion, that started in the mid 1950’s…I went from Cadillacs and Buicks, to Mercedes in the mid 1980’s, primarily for their diesels…I drove Mercedes Benz automobiles, and GM full size SUV’s, until the early 2000’s. I was also blessed to have a very nice collection of GM automobiles, ranging from 1957 thru 1975, primarily Cadillac, Buick and Pontiac full size Convertibles and Hardtops, almost all with the optional, big block V-8 engines…I found driving those, especially the latter 60’s thru 75 models so enjoyable, and just plain fun to driver, my last Mercedes was a 1998 sedan. I am currently pondering, one more new automobile, and the only car I’m considering, is a Cadillac CT5, a stunning automobile, which has received great reviews, at a very good price point.
@voitdive the association has nothing to do with its decrease in popularity. Cadillac is a symbol mostly to older people. the main ones you see driving them now are older caucasians and black people. New age folks desire an audi or an mercedes. trends change per generation.
I disagree with the idea that only old folks like Cadillac. I had them as a young man and loved them. would like them again as an older man if they looked like they did years ago.
Cadillac, Buick, Lincoln, Mercury, Chrysler, Oldsmobiles, and the Chevy Brougham series were popular with the older crowd and were seen as major status symbols because their parents had owned those types of cars and all the famous celebrities owned these types of cars. I like these types of cars too. The younger generation likes them, i do at least
voitdive right! And you can’t distinguish on the surface those who actually could afford it versus barely scraping by. same with the 300. I started seeing people put “Bentley” kits on them like come on dude! My granddad used to work at a steel mill for a while, and then did construction on the PA turnpike and Lincoln Highway. My grandma was a nurse for the school district. My granddad was a hustler tho! He can make money out of nowhere. He loves to work. Even at 80, he still pours concrete, chops wood, and moves heavy furniture. He’s worked for, bought, and paid off every vehicle he’s owned. No buy here, pay here $800/mo 170K miles barely making it by to show off for him.
It's impressive how, consistently, when companies listen to their engineers they thrive, while when they are controlled by management tie-wearing, bonus-driven straw men, they completely crash.
@@fussick7121 But some of the imports are worse. I believe many of the newer Toyotas look as if they are getting ready to bite someone! Most of the others are plain, and one has to see the name or emblem to know what make a car is.
The tittles are so misleading. It’s not like Cadillac is doomed. They still sell especially the Escalade but I believe they’re not selling that much because you see a Mercedes Benz or BMW and the Cadillac just looks cheap when they cost the same.
No. A "traditional" Cadillac appeals to a demographic that's dying. Things change. So did the world. It's not 1977 anymore and those types of car buyers are either dead or almost dead. Wouldn't make any financial sense to build a car for someone who won't live long enough to buy another. It would be a waste of engineering and time. They need something to keep up with the new age consumer. The first gen CTS was a great start, but then they ended up making it an old persons car again as time went on. They have the handling and acceleration down, but quality is horrible. That's what they need to improve; quality and reliability.
Living in the past is what got Cadillac into trouble in the first place. They kept trying to build cars for 1968, even after fuel crunches and recessions proved this was no good.
Cadillac is flopping because they're trying sooooo hard to be something they're not (BMW). Nowadays they focus on trying to be sporty rather than luxurious and quantative over qualative. Whatever happened to the day's when Cadillac didn't need to chase other brands to rain supreme ? GM seems to have forgotten their roots , the 50s era Cadillacs were (And still are) some of the most exquisite luxury vehicles ever made. The worst mistake they could've done was dropping the names (Elderado , Fleetwood , DeVille , etc). These models had decades of heritage to Cadillac as a brand , *NOT* that ct6 and xt5 bullshit !!! Least we still have the Escalade but that's not saying much cause they aren't that impressive as of now. Even though it's unlikely , I would've love to see them produce something similar to the elmiraj or ciel , probably 2 of the closest things we'll get to a classic Cadillac.
If only Caddy had the balls to actually investing in those classic-style cars, but knowing how much their reputation got obliterated, doubt it. Also to the boomer before me: it's not the Arabs fault they embargoed you for supporting bullshit state.
I agree as I wrote a very similar post. The Catera and CTS were meant to transform Cadillac into a cheaper BMW alternative. Except they could not make cars cheaper. So they admittedly had no purpose at all. Meanwhile Now the USA has more wealthy 65+ year olds than EVER before!! Right now!! How was American luxury bad?? Four Seasons hotels did not go out of style. America has a good design heritage.
Houston Helicopter Tours You know, if they made some new cars with the classic fins and that general old style shape, albeit with modern day safety, I think people would really respond well to that. Those more modern Cadillacs they showed just didn’t have anything to distinguish themselves from anything else. They need to get back to their routes.
Cadillac should get back to building full size V8 powered body on frame sedans and not try to be BMW's! Bring back the couch seats, chrome and traditional design!
That'd be awesome seeing that return, my sister has an old luxury car from that era it's comfy af. Like gliding around on a big couch. And I drive a BMW!
*MC NUTTINGTON* I think the exteriors are about the same but the Lincoln’s interior is still superior imo. Cadillac’s have just too many screens and flat buttons. The navigators dials and switches just feel so much nicer as well as the dash which just feels bigger. It always comes down to preference but as someone who’s been in both I still would give it to the navigator which I consider perfect besides the rear. The aviator is what i would consider the peak of modern Lincoln
I've thought a 1950 Series 61 sedan would be an interesting car to have--in black of course, although other colors were available. However, I've noticed that many of the cars featured in the Cadillac sales literature of the late 1940s up through the mid-1950s were red, although this color wasn't that common on the actual cars.

True, and it pre-dates Cadillac use by around 15 years, first recorded used on an Arnold automobile in England, though the starter design was derived from a Benz patent, and there is some belief that it was used by Benz first, but there is no clear evidence, but seems credible, but likely was experimental.

I liked the Cimarron. It's interesting that it was dismissed as looking too similar to Chevy sedans of similar size, but the equally derivative Escalade was welcomed with open arms a few years later. The only thing that really differentiates it from the similar-looking Suburban and Tahoe is the grill and headlights. Shape-wise, it's pretty generic. Which is fine, I guess, but at this point it seems like people want it for the Cadillac badge and not its looks.
What may also be a difference is that the Cadillac division fully embraced the Escalade as a Cadillac (as opposed to the Cimarron which was marketed as "Cimarron by Cadillac"--as if to say in the latter case "yes, we'll admit we badge it and sell it, but it doesn't really represent us".

I was raised on Caddies. My mother had two when I was growing up. I even learned how to drive in a Cadillac. For my mother it was about an American made luxury brand. Now she drives a Chrysler. I think the issue is GM, as well as Ford became very lazy. They stopped innovating. This has been a problem with American car companies.
Not just the car industry. American innovation in general has become lazy. Now its more about selling and making more money, rather than pushing the limits with innovation. Just look at NASA, Apple, Boeing etc. It's a shame, because the drive of America used to drive the world. Now China is moving forward, changing the world.
I am a multiple BMW and Lexus owner that switched to Cadillac last go-round for my DD. I have a 2016 CTS 3.6AWD I've owned since new; and for the first time in many years I've had the car past the 3 year mark and continue to love driving it almost 4 years in. Even driving a bodystyle released for the 2014 model year I am regularly complimented on the looks of the car ( I feel that the CT6 was a further improvement but is a really big car). I find that the normally-aspirated engine is a breath of fresh air in a turbo-charged world, even if it gives up significant real-world performance to the almightly BMW B58 engine. The athleticism of the chassis was top of class in 2016, although I understand that the Germans have now caught up again. As with any modern car with lots of electrics/electronics I am concerned about out of warranty repair costs (my BMWs have required far more costly warranty repairs); I will be buying a GM B2B warranty and will hang on to the CTS for at least another 3 years at which point I will be considering an all-electric car for my DD. My only real complaint is the ownership experience - you are still dealing with a GM dealer, with GM service departments, and Cadillac Customer Care is a joke. My dealer is actually pretty good and my service advisor excellent, but he is constrained by the processes that apply equally to the Cadillac owner as the Chevy Aveo owner. I feel that at the very least they need to go to the "dealer within a dealer" as Lexus initially did, where you deal with Lexus-dedicated staff and processes.

I upgraded from a 2014 Toyota Highlander to a 2024 Cadillac XT4 this past weekend (the 2024 highlander drove the same and is pretty much the same chasis and interior so it's boring). Every other car that I test drove had turbo lag, whether short or long...Mercedes GLC300 (least turbo lag), BMW X3 (a little more turbo lag), Porsche Macan S (even more turbo lag), Honda (way too much turbo lag). The Cadillac has these features that UA-camrs miss: - lighted logo behind the dashboard - pulsating safety seat (most cars only beep) - left behind child in the rear seat alert - capless fuel tank (like my 2017 Corvette C7 ) - umbrella storage in the doors (like Rolls Royce) - active noise cancellation (like my 2017 Corvette C7 with Bose) - power passenger seat with lumbar - free 5G hotspot - stop/start feature is the smoothest I’ve ever experienced that I don't even notice it. Self driving cars are programmed by people who can't drive. They are overrated and deadly. Most of us watched the video of that woman mowed down in California.
Being a lifelong GM fan, especially their fifties and sixties years, I kept hoping that they would step up and away from the General and create a kind of superluxury car that was distant from the usual German suspects - in style and in performance. Like they did back then. A Cadillac was a CADILLAC. I guess the idea that the top of the line defines the parant company somehow escapes GM. They owe Cadillac a chance to be the standard of the world.
I had a Cadillac and loved it.... until the first part went bad. Then, it was domino after domino - racking up hundreds and then thousands of dollars in repair. I'll never own another.
There was a time when each GM brand had its own identity and you would progress through those brands as your life progressed You started with Chevrolet, then moved up to Pontiac, Oldsmobile, and Buick in that order. Finally, you had arrived when you bought a Cadillac. That is why so many older people drove Cadillac, it was a symbol of their success in life. It was even joked, that hearses we’re Cadillacs so everyone was assured of their last ride being in a Cadillac. What happened? 1. The brands lost their identity with models becoming platforms that would be offered with different trim and badges at multiple GM brands. 2. Competition increased with foreign makers offering options to people and as buyers chose other brands, sales dropped and in some cases, historical brands were closed with Oldsmobile first and Pontiac second. To make matters worse, GM brands seem to compete for the same GM customer rather than compete against true competitors. Cadillac tried to reinvent itself and be cutting edge with technology and design. To some, those designs alienated their core buyers and no longer represented the qualities / features the defined a car being a Cadillac. I worked for GM corporate in the 1990’s and everything that happened with GM in the 2000’s was predicted and outcomes were known. Too many models spread across too many brands with too many dealers. GM got lazy producing too many trucks and SUVs because those vehicles were more profitable. Unfortunately, the magic number was $2 that caused demand for trucks and SUVs to implode. That $2 being the price of gasoline and consumers dumped their SUVs and trucks getting more fuel efficient vehicles. Overnight, driving a large SUV or truck become a symbol of irresponsibility and waste.
Q: Why doesn't one ever see a U-Haul being pulled by a hearse? A: Because, according to company literature, the Cadillac Commercial Chassis isn't recommended for towing!

Cadillac, Lincoln and Buick suffered the same problems. Companies cheapened the brand. Not only in looks, but in performance. Kept the luxury price tag.
Buick is finally releasing some affordable models for next year so maybe Buick will succeed again who knows
My grandfather always had a Cadillac. Owning a Cadillac, especially in the black community, was a success symbol.
The black community? You look white to me... Makes me assume he was too
Cadillac, Buick, Lincoln, Mercury, Chrysler, Oldsmobiles, and the Chevy Brougham series were popular with the older crowd and were seen as major status symbols because their parents had owned those types of cars and all the famous celebrities owned these types of cars.

Right? Same with sports cars. Make ‘em look like old muscle and they’ll sell again. Quit trying to be an import, bc you can’t beat them.
Doubtful
No they won't. Even the boomers won't buy them.
One cool fact they left out, Cadillac was the first company which put the gas, break, and clutch in the pattern we know now.

True, and it pre-dates Cadillac use by around 15 years, first recorded used on an Arnold automobile in England, though the starter design was derived from a Benz patent, and there is some belief that it was used by Benz first, but there is no clear evidence, but seems credible, but likely was experimental.

Once they had competition, people realized American cars were shit.
Pinky Mixology heyPinky, I’ll put my CADILLAC ATS V up against anything you have.
What Japanese plastic? Get the old body style, make it economy and put eletronics in it. New mustangs are great.
Johnny Even i heard Nissan is on the verge of bankruptcy
@phillip krikorian ok boomer
@phillip krikorian Less costly to fix and run better? Where you get this info from because all the facts are American cars are sorry asf in the rest of the world!
Japanese have been shitting on American cars on the Track, Road, Drag Strip, and Off-Road. Only American car that is very respected and loved is the Corvette, also American V8s are the only cars people want.
Cadillac is the best brand for families. It served our family since 1950s. I miss the behemoth sizes.💔
Cadillac has actually regained its mojo, starting about 10-12 years ago. The soon to be released Blackwing versions of the CT series is going to impress anyone who actually cares about cars and how they drive vs what emblem is on their hood.
...and they still have a MANUAL!
Cadillac over the last fifteen years has actually been pretty good. The Escalade is a luxury SUV staple, the CTS-V was underated and the new models for 2020 are well designed.
No matter how good the quality, if it doesn't translate to sales, the company eventually folds.
@@travelseatsyellowlab exactly like noone is going to pay 100k for a Cadillac like the CTS-v, instead people will go to bmw performance, mercedes amg, and all of those companies.
I've driven the new XTS, it's very nice until you realize it's an Impala with a more plush interior, Cadillac shouldn't be recycled Chevys
@@oolavitzoo You just the nail on the head!
The Escalade is a Suburban.
James May said it best. When he described how Cadillac went from being the relaxing, luxury drivers car, to what they have now, which is sports cars with supercharged engines producing 600+ HP, and an exact quote, "It just isnt neccessary"
This is from the American trip special, with the Cadillac, Corvette, and Challenger
I absolutley adore Caddilac. Every time I see a Caddilac car i'm like "LOOK LOOK THERE'S A CADDILAC".
Cadillac*
I was raised on Caddies. My mother had two when I was growing up. I even learned how to drive in a Cadillac. For my mother it was about an American made luxury brand. Now she drives a Chrysler.
I think the issue is GM, as well as Ford became very lazy. They stopped innovating. This has been a problem with American car companies.
Not just the car industry. American innovation in general has become lazy. Now its more about selling and making more money, rather than pushing the limits with innovation. Just look at NASA, Apple, Boeing etc. It's a shame, because the drive of America used to drive the world. Now China is moving forward, changing the world.
chigal09 all car companies have gotten lazy. Not just americans.
Supply and demand. People keep buying their junk cars faster than they can produce them, why would they innovate?
My Cadillac was very intuitive for the day, but I totally agree. They tried to hold on to their image rather than prove their image.
I would have to argue with Ford, not a fan of them, but the new Expedition looks amazing.
I have a Cadillac. I'm getting a new one next year though. These are some damn good cars!!!
I love my ATS-V.
Here in Saudi Arabia Cadillac is still a prize it had a great reputation you see Escalades everywhere in big cities for drivers or families cars
Interesting how at one time pushing a button to start the engine and staying dry when it rained were considered 'luxury'.
It’s crazy. On tanks you had to jump out the back and wind it up too. Truly wild imagine doing that in the middle of combat!
That typical up inflection that’s common amongst many speakers nowadays drives me crazy!! It’s like listening to a Valley Girl or something! Good grief!!
I upgraded from a 2014 Toyota Highlander to a 2024 Cadillac XT4 this past weekend (the 2024 highlander drove the same and is pretty much the same chasis and interior so it's boring).
The Cadillac XT4 has no turbo lag that I can feel. Every other car that I test drove had turbo lag, whether short or long...Mercedes GLC300 (least turbo lag), BMW X3 (a little more turbo lag), Porsche Macan S (even more turbo lag), Honda (way too much turbo lag).
The Cadillac has these features that UA-camrs miss:
- lighted logo behind the dashboard
- pulsating safety seat (most cars only beep)
- left behind child in the rear seat alert
- capless fuel tank (like my 2017 Corvette C7 )
- umbrella storage in the doors (like Rolls Royce)
- active noise cancellation (like my 2017 Corvette C7 with Bose)
- power passenger seat with lumbar
- free 5G hotspot
- stop/start feature is the smoothest I’ve ever experienced that I don't even notice it.
My other car is a 2017 Corvette Stingray in stickshift.
The CT6- V is one of the most underrated sedans in the world!
Ben H because people realize you can get more for your money with a Lexus sport sedan
@@yourfather5324 that's exactly what I mean. You dont get more for your money with those brands. Lexus performance model. The Lexus GS-F which is the MIDSIZE car starts at $85, 010. A increase of 34k from the base model. The CT6-V fully loaded , full size sedan is $97,190. If the LS had a performance model it would be alot more than 97k. The base LS starts $75, 450.
Ben H well if you look at resale values you would realize that Lexus definitely wins by 100 miles on that one, i understand you’re an American car fanatic but the statistics say otherwise
You mean the CTS-V ? The CT6-V isn't even out yet.
@@thomasowczarek2922 no, I mean the Ct6-v. I dont know what has been delivered or not. Just talking pricing on the respective website of the auto makers
America should stop making low-quality car then
We dont make low quality cars at all. Our cars are better than ever so much so that Lincoln and Cadillac have caught the attention of European car buyers and many BMW and Mercedes buyers have made the switch
Edward Myers Agreed. Lincoln in particular is building some world class, truly desirable, vehicles. The new Aviator, Corsair, Continental, etc are fantastic!

@@emil3454 well lincoln really isnt sold out side the us. Ford deffietly but Lincoln not so much. Lincoln has done just fine in the us compared to Cadillac who is relying on china
Like Preston Tucker said when he addressed Congress “Someday we will be buying cars from our former enemies!”
They should have kept making big luxury cars like rolls royce.
Surprised they didn't mention the failure of the first gen Escalade, since it was basically a Cadillac in name alone, basically being a Tahoe on the inside and out. It even shows on that graph, that Cadillac only began growing at 2002, when the 2nd gen Escalade came out that actually looked good.
In the 80's consumers recognized the quality issues in ALL US cars. After watching 70's Volvos, BMWs and Toyota cars run for 10 yrs and rack up 150-200K miles, everyone noticed.

The boom in China might keep Cadillac up for some time, but it will need to get ahead of the race in electric cars and self-driving technology. Otherwise Cadillac might face its fall again.
That Part. Hope They Make It To AWD Too Tho!
They have the best self driving tech available, behind Tesla of course.
They could do what Tesla does but won't risk the liability. 'super cruise' will drive for you, but watches you to make sure you're watching the road.
Why would self driving cars need to be implemented and pushed consumers arent actually saying "man i cant wait to purchase my first heavily implemented self driving tech car" you do realize that producers are the ones that dictate what consumers buy there werent any consumers ever saying we need and want self driving cars procucers made and implemented this stuff on there cars and since people bought them they SAID evrybody wants this that is not true
I think they are doing that now. Have you seen Cadillac’s latest concepts? They’re gorgeous!
I had a Cadillac and loved it.... until the first part went bad. Then, it was domino after domino - racking up hundreds and then thousands of dollars in repair. I'll never own another.
Sounds like my 84 Camaro. Leased new, systems kept failing. Never went back.
I haven't been this bored since high school presentations
There was a time when each GM brand had its own identity and you would progress through those brands as your life progressed
You started with Chevrolet, then moved up to Pontiac, Oldsmobile, and Buick in that order.
I bought a '76 Fleetwood Brougham from my Father. In 1981, I started to restore it and kept it until '85. It was stolen in November of 1985. I guess someone wanted it awful bad to do something like that.

@Burleon They also took some of the worst decisions when it comes to managing a brand portfolio, rebadging being one of many mistakes they made for decades.
For example Ford did a much better job when they owned AM, Jaguar and Volvo.
S - Thats funny cause a CTS-V will pretty much destroy everything from germany, even cars with a much higher price tag. Not to mention the famous magnetic suspension system which was developed by GM for Cadillac, is used by Ferrari.
