// Hey everyone!! Sorry for the short hiatus for the past two weeks. I've really been wanting to do a video like this for a long time (video essay), so here we are! A deep dive look into how Yourself from Silly Billy and Hit Single Real was created, how he relates to Boyfriend, Sonic.EXE and how he managed to save Friday Night Funkin and FNF mods from becoming completely irrelevant in the public eye!

READ ME BEFORE COMMENTING 🗣🗣
I see some comments talking about how Silly Billy didn’t “save FNF from dying”, which is true. I never said that it saved it from completely dying out.
Rather, it allowed the game to be pushed out of its irrelevancy and get more people talking about it again as a result. The game was never dead, nor has it ever been “dying”.
Also, while the Weekend 1 update did also assist in this. I also stated how from the UA-cam metrics I observed on multiple videos, tiktoks, tweets, forums, etc; It seemed that Silly Billy was a slight bit more influential in the public eye (to my surprise). Obviously not invalidating Weekend 1 in any way. It still played a major part in saving FNF, as I also said in the video.
Also also, genuine apologies for forgetting to mention EvilSk8r when talking about the dev team. It kinda just flew over my head when editing, but he def deserves some love so please go support him as well for helping to make this awesome lil game!!!
Also also also, I was aware that Subterfuge wasn’t made by Churgney, and that he rather just made a lyrical cover of it. Though for some reason I guess I just skipped the “with lyrics” part in my mind when writing the script??? Not sure tbh lmao, but thank you all for the comments who pointed that out.
Also also also also, I didn’t include the “Eye to Eye” version of Yourself due to the fact that he seemed to deviate a lot from the original two versions and seemed to be more of its own thing. Especially design wise, taking a completely different approach than Divide and Doorknob.
Lastly, I did not “forget” about Car or Garn47. Neither of them were the topic of the video, and honestly could have their own video dedicated to them lmao. This video is purely about Silly Billy as a song and the character of Yourself.
Of course, I respect any and all feedback, really I do!! It is my first time making a video essay after all. But please, watch the video and actually listen to what is said before criticizing me tho 😭😭

Silly Billy became so popular that I started seeing reviewers outside of the FNF space start interacting with it. It is such a good song, but I was fully not expecting it to reach 10 Million views.

it's insane how much popularity it got within a span of just 2 months. the only other fnf content that has reached over 10 million views i can name of is the final song for DD's week from the Corruption mod, but that was over 3 years ago

To be fair, oversaturation of concepts/jokes is a problem in many fandoms. It's hardly unique to FNF. And even amidst that oversaturation, many goods mods have been made!
I mean it's creators literally made sonic exe mods and the mod it was part of it literally had sonic exe type characters.
The Silly Billy mod was the main reason why I regained interest in this game. I’m just glad to finally see a mod that’s not based off some creepypasta or existing ip.

Horror mods based on already existing ip are getting as stale as creepypastas if I have to be honest. No matter how good they are, I just can't see why some of them have entire cult followings whatsoever. Silly Billy and the new wave of originals are such a breath of fresh air.

@@interceptionbug4166 Sure, you could say that. My view still doesn’t change though, though it’s probably because I find the original the mods are based off of bland and dull since I’m from the era of the golden age of creepypastas and my brain is just tired of it, completely.
I genuinely cannot find anything fascinating about them, especially creepypastas around games with the sole exception of that one Godzilla game.
Edit: Although there is also the gen alpha crowd, there’s that I guess.
Finally someone who is able to make a FNF video talking about the rise, fall, and rise of FNF without just shitting on the Sonic.exe mod for "ruining" the community, or acting like all the horror mods we get are bad. Just mentioning that, despite a lot of them being amazing, like the OG Sonic.exe mod, the mario madness mod, and the cartoon cat mod, they did cause a significant fall in popularity.

Mario's Madness V2 deserves an honorary mention. It may not been as beloved or perfect as Silly Billy was, but it def poured the gas on the FNF community to let Silly Billy spark it with a massive boom.

I actually stepped back from the fnf community, since everything was getting dry with original ideas(no hate on the creepy pasta, they were rlly cool), but ever since Silly Billy came out, it brought me back to the community :)

Silly billy is a mix of all the passionate people that make mods in one piece of a whole mod
Mods at the start were all beloved when the game was at its peak. However, people lost the point of modding. It's not just lore. It's not just making it harder and harder. It's about the experience.
It must feel unique and special.
To think when I saw the notification for this song, I just thought it was another churgney amazing song and that'd be the end of it for a bit, but to think that silly billy started to revive fnf (along with the recent fnf update for weekends) honestly caught me off guard and I can't be anymore happy!

Went in expecting a sort of outsider perspective from someone not from the fnf community but was pleasantly surprised! This video was really good, I liked a lot of and agreed with a lot of the points you brought up. I had noticed the descendent from unique ideas and stuff into becoming “scary.exe” mods. Very good Video! I especially like that you talked about the creppypasta-mods overshadowing other great mods. As a huge Deltarune/Undertale fan, mods like Seek's cool Deltarune mod was one of those mods I wish had gotten a little more attention from the community overall (relativ to the then popular ones) as well as some other, more niche mods I personally really enjoyed playing. One of these is the Friday Night Fluffin' mod, which has such a unique art style from many other mods and features whole SFM-animated cutscenes between songs/weeks as well as a whole ass ARG (which im pretty sure I'm one of the few people to actually have done, couldn't find anything about it online lol). This is one of the mods I wish had gotten more attention from more people.

Kinda crazy how Garn47 wasn't mentioned at all throughout this video. Though I guess it's not really related to FnF anymore it's still attached to the Hit Single mod and has absolutely blown up, especially with the official Twitter account. It alone has spawned it's own fandom and is getting updated separately from Hit Single I believe.

@@t00nedd00d the devs never took a break, they have been working on the game this whole time, and they have a lot more done already, not just the weekend 1, pretty sure the director said that they already have 60% of the weeks done for base game, wich are 20 weeks (full story mode)

I was really sad when finding out the real back story of how the mod was made. Listening to the lyrics don’t hit as hard as it did before. It just feels sad now.

6:48 Correction Subterfuge was composed entirely by Honkish after his experience collabing with the people on Silly Billy as that came first. Sturm did do a lyrical cover of Subterfuge because it seemed fun to do especially after releasing Game Over with Lyrics and Fake Baby for Hit Single on the same day.
I think Silly Billy also inspired other creators to make the lyrics and theirs mod like Jeffy's Endless Aethos or Twiddlefinger

I hope silly billy, garn 47 and darnell will inspire the fnf community to make better mods and be able to do more than just exe stuff again. Not that there bad. We need more variety like how it was back in 2021 where it was a balance between mods that feel connected to each other and expanded the fnf world with it's own characters and lore + ip mods like shaggy and matt and newgrounds mods like madcom mods.
That's because OC Mods have the most contreversy and after the contreversy the OCs will be put on the banlist, meaning they'll never be used again.

i like to think that the lyrics of silly billy not only represent the story behind the character, but also fnf as a game
so much effort and and hard work and creativity and love and care has been poured into the game ever since it first released, yet people were starting to care for it less by the day and the song that got the game back off its feet was speaking for the whole modding community and even the original devs, begging people to come back and admit how proud they are
Finally! Someone speaking facts! No theories! No "what if" scenarios! No maybe's!. It's hard to find lore- divers that actually fact check even themselves!. You gotta respect the time and effort of researching to said video and editing it to make it apealing to the audience.

The Single hit real mod really surprised lots of people because of how impressive the songs are. Even though some songs are goofy as hell like a literal pig. What I’m more impressed is the garn47 game that is literally in a fnf mod that is supposed to unlock more songs in single hit real. It is really an impressive mod

The intro gave me chills, it was put together so well and the added clips of the first and most popular mods made it so much better
Silly Billy is peak FNF and I don't think there will ever be another song or mod that can top it.
Silly Billy *PERFECTLY* encapsulates everything we love about FNF and the mods around it.
The charting is fun, the animations and art are breathtaking, the music slaps, and the story behind the characters canonically and irl is full of grief and sadness, it's perfect. Silly Billy takes the overused EXE/faker concept and turns it on its head. Yourself isn't some alien or demon or false god, this is Boyfriend. You're fighting Yourself, literally speaking. The grief of losing his Girlfriend made him go insane, and that is reflected in the real world with the loss of Divide still stinging our hearts and minds. And the lyrics only help to push the feelings of pain and grief and suffering, beyond just some song of beeps and boops. That sections still gives me chills, and it's only made better with the god-tier animation.
Silly Billy is and always will be, the PERFECT Friday Night Funkin track.

the mod makes me jealous and sad at the same time, but happy the community came back, i had my own mod idea awhile back,but it's pretty much dead even if i have the characters design(even if it's missing one thing), i don't have money to hire people to do it, and the people who wanted to help for free lost interest, i wish i could've gotten my mod to be as big as some of the popular mods
i never even noticed or acknowledged fnf being "less popular", cuz to me it didn't really matter. mods were still being made and redefining the game, introducing new ideas, and i was there for it all. i've been into this game and working on mods for 4 years now, and it hasn't even gotten slightly stale for me.

Its really nice seeing FNF has a resurgence because this was the game that I found out about loads of older Newgrounds characters and properties that have come about thanks to Newgrounds, and while I did like a lot of the creepypasta stuff there definitely was way too much of it. So its super refreshing seeing mods that dont do creepypasta stuff

Everyone. Every single one that played the mod was happy. We could see the smiles, and it was genuine and real, not something like "wow so cool" and simple stuff
Been an fnf fan since week 5 is released, and till this day i still care for the game and I'm never been more proud to be aprt of this big community full of talent and amazing people, sure there are problems but it never stops my love for the game and after watching this and find out silly billy about 2 months ago (My Dear Heavens is 2 Months past already!?) This is incredibly inspiring to me and gives me so much joy thank you making this video, time well spend.

I honestly feel why Silly Billy became one of the best songs is that it felt different. And even though it didn't have a second phase...or overcomplicated backstory it didn't need to.
I think the reason why Silly Billy was iconic was because it proved FNF can make good music. It's just that mods and making video game and VGM is hard. And if done well like Silly Billy that's why it became famous. Now to be fair there are other mods that had better graphics or music than Silly Billy. But I feel what made it the global hit and one of the biggest magnum opus in FNF is because of how this song had the most well crated song ever.
First off I am not a composer or a musician, but the song Silly Billy is catchy. It is interesting because the catchy beats make it beautiful. For example in the beginning of the song it hinted the foreshadowing of the final lyrics. I also love how it uses music composition done well and make it catchy. Most mods keep relying on loud or reptitive sounds but Silly Billy balances the music sounds.
Secondly I feel yes the lyrics made it iconic but it's not just that. There were mods that had lyrics such as Mario Madness or Angry Luigi. But the reason why Yourself's lyrics were remembered is that it feels...emotional. Most lyrics in fnf try to make it scary (if its horror) while some make it more terrifying because the rapper we face is scary yet again...but Yourself was born different. When he sang the lyrics, you feel sympathy for an evil BF clone. He isn't scary he's horrifying to look at yet tragic. He's an alternate BF who lost his innocence yet he isn't a monster. He's grown up yet weary of everything. When he introduces himself to BF he didn't want to destroy him he just got curious he found a version of him and decided to rap because why not?
Churgney is a great singer based on him making the words count. When he says "Just Long" you can feel the emotion and mourn of it. The visuals also encapsulate the words as you see Yourself struggle to compose himself like pulling his shirt, shaking his hands, and glimpses of a frown when he sings. It makes it so beautiful rather than lyrics of an insane person, because this opponent doesn't despise Boyfriend he's struggling to sing to honor his dear alternate universe Girlfriend. And yes while I know you said the lyrics weren't supposed to be for Divide and its supposed to be Yourself's lamention to Herself...I do feel it hinted at the late creator. I feel to me Yourself is giving a thank you to his late girlfriend and late creator who made him. As well as the many people who supported FNF despite its ups and downs. He hoped maybe if his GF or his creator was still alive a little longer perhaps they would be proud of him. After all Churgney and the devs did say on twitter, Silly Billy was a way to honor Divide's legacy. I believe in my opinion, the people who believe the lyrics are for the Late Divide are still valid. The only thing bad is overthinking how Divide passed away. So can we please celebrate Divide's work rather than how he passed on?
Anyways lastly, this song was unintentionally yet deserving of being the last song before the official FNF update. To me Silly Billy is about Boyfriend but also the legacy of FNF and the modding community as a whole. How this song encorporates peak FNF. Yes perhaps it was elevated by its horror elements, but it felt like a proper magnum opus. Despite the many ocs, horror medium, or characters from existing IP Silly Billy was Boyfriend's climatic conclusion. To me Yourself was a representation of a weary Boyfriend who is trying to enjoy what he had. Like a former FNF fan trying to enjoy the franchise, or in this case a Boyfriend who lost his way. Because it still comes back to Boyfriend, we wouldn't had played FNF if it weren't for the iconic Boyfriend and Girlfriend. So seeing a alternate version be an inverse without Girlfriend is sad but then it doesn't become edgy. The song takes its time to make us enjoy Yourself until the climatoc lyrics happen. The song Silly Billy feels uplifting.
Throughout the song I feel Yourself actually has character development throughout the song. In the song Yourself sings with BF not because he wants to end him but to enjoy a rap to make himself feel better. Unlike most fnf ocs or characters they mostly want to end Boyfriend through Phase 3 or havr a friendly rap and that's it. Or some not having a purpose because the mods had no story to it. I feel the reason why I've been burnout by some FNF mods is that the story gets explained too much. Ypu get the feeling they're trying to explain the character but it comes off as tiring. I remembered reacting to Friday Night Fever and don't get me wrong I loved the songs and care but darn it was the dialogue cringy and I was tired from the characters bad humor. Silly Billy gets away with this because the mod doesn't waste any time and jumps right into the song. Most mods have their characters want to make BF perish or infuriate him ot simply just be friendly. Yourself wants to rap against Boyfriend all because he wanted to try it one last time. Though midway we see him frustrated he cannot because of the late memories of Herself bubbling up. As well as BF being better at rapping so he switches to being BF. He isn't threatening he's too busy grieving mentally throughout the rap. He still has funny moments as it's possibly he shapeshifted to Boyfriend as a funny prank with him starting to enjoy the flow. But something tells me he's frustrated a mere counterpart is still thriving and enjoying rap.
Then the climax, Yourself breaks down and he laments everything he felt. The icons we see is not him going angry towards BF like any fanmade mod chaarcter, but him slowly breaking down as he finally laments his grief. You can tell the icons were him trying to smile but his smile feels forced. Almost as if he was holding back his emotions until they bubbled. Yourself finally laments yet hopes this rap battle would make his late lover PROUD of him. And probably a meta thank you by the devs towards the Late Divide. Herself appears behind Yourself and she sings one last time to her late boyfriend before fading away. As it indicates Yourself accepted the grief and moved on, though you could sense he feels a bit saddened. The red notes indicating Herself and the purple background (I'm sure it's not supposed to be a JJK Gojo reference) shows him finally reconciling and be at peace. Thanks to BF he manages to regain his passion for rapping, so when Boyfriend joins in they slowly connect and have the best duo singing to conclude the magnum opus that is Silly Billy. Also I believe the Hit Single features added a video game into the mod Garn 47 and its beloved character Carr, a literal rhythm game composed by Lyfer and more so that's why its popular including the amazing voice of Churgney and his dev team.
Overall I met many songs and heard from FNF, but Silly Billy is one of the best songs in FnF mod era 1. And I hope we get to see mods that are done well, be different, and dared to be great. Thank you to Churgney and the Hit Single devs team. And thank you to the creators od FNF and the modders as well as fans and rest in peace Divide fly high.
Did you know that Yourself is actually taller because BF in the game is portrayed as short but if its a short character it gives innocent, if it's a tall character it's bascially evil character.

fr, most of them are often just self inserts, and even then they're pretty generic without a story.
most mods used to have pretty interesting designs and a backstory.
They may not be unique but at least they put their own flare on it and isn't just creepy pasta galore.
