The story behind this is good as well. There are 2 backstories: the in game one, and the IRL one. The in game story goes like this: you play as Boyfriend, the guy on the right. The guy on the left is called Yourself, an alternate version of Boyfriend who lost his version of Girlfriend, (known as Herself in his universe) Girlfriend is very important to Boyfriend in the overall game as names imply, she’s his everything. The IRL backstory is sadder. Yourself was created by a man known as Divide, intended for another mod. However, Divide passed in his sleep from cancer, so the creators of this mod found some old art and files of Yourself and used them to create this mod as a tribute to him. The lyrics reflect both of these stories, “stay awake” referring to both Herself and Divide dying. “I’ll make you say how proud you are of me” referring to Divide being proud of his scrapped creation and Herself being proud of Boyfriend. (Fun fact: when he says “just long enough to see” you can see Herself’s spirit hugging Yourself for just a split second.) RIP Divide
Although, It's worth noting (at least from what i've heard in another video) We as the broader internet don't actually have that full information, and "Dying in their sleep" was more of a rumor about their passing which we don't actually have confirmation for... And probably never will because people are getting parasocial about it and t hat's not for us to know.
A bit of game explanation: Friday Night Funkin (FNF for short) is a rhythm game in the style of Dance Dance Revolution/Stepmania using a keyboard for inputs. In the main game, you play as Boyfriend (the character with the red hat) essentially engaging in rap battles with Girlfriend's parents/love interests/etc, but the rapping is simulated with the rhymic pitched tones. Mods expand the game and often have their own self-contained stories and characters. It plays out very "call and response" almost with the opposing character (especially at at lower difficulties), which is the back and forth you're seeing between the two characters here, with Boyfriend and the opposing character often mimicking each other with varying degrees of embellishments as they "battle."
another sick thing to notice that i just noticed watching this video-, the arrow colors signify when that note happens within a measure Red arrows happen on the main beats of the rhythm (1, 2, 3, 4), Blue arrows happen on the eighth note beats between them, and Green arrows happen on the sixteenth notes between those, so a full pattern of 8 sixteenth notes in a row looks like Red -> Green -> Blue -> Green -> Red -> Green -> Blue -> Green (you can see this at 14:22)
This song is so good, my only problem with it is the walls of sound you were talking about. There’s so many things layered in so many different places that it almost feels like too much, and doesn’t give my ears much room to breathe. Other than that, i really like it! its definitely one of my favorites! (Also the part where he said “Wtf, how do you do this?” made me feel proud of my fnf skills since thats my comfort level in speed and frequency of notes XD)
Honestly, out of all the FNF songs I've seen, this is hands down the most musically incredible one I've ever seen. The chorus foreshadowing, the personality between both sides of the call and response, the background beats perfectly synergizing with the "vocals", and it all comes together into a song that I genuinely cannot stop listening to.
I think you should check out some Ultrakill music, they've been covered by a lot of other music reactors but I'd like to hear your take on it! Some most notable ones would be Order, Altars of Apostasy, and Castle Vein. Lot of Leitmotifs as well.
A big part of how to hit the insane amount of notes is the same muscle memory you use for typing. I play Rhythm games on all platforms and feel like my brain rewires as I do. When I play rhythm games the I only get better once i establish muscle memory for the combos and such. From there i feel like i connect more with how to respond to what i see. Then suddenly i am hitting buttons i dont think i saw or touched. It is as if my brain processed my reaction without the rest of my senses. Then theres that dopamine hit when you realize you did something well so instinctively. With good music and interface playing a rhythm game is an experience. It feels surreal when you play honestly.
I didn't expect this at all! FnF has some actual cool songs, but generally people that never heard about it tend to judge it. I'm glad that you liked it, and if you ever want to listen something else from this, try checking out Out of Place from the Monsters of Monsters mod (8bit tune) or Paranoia from Mario's Madness (this one's also epic)
I love the way you do reactions! I've noticed a lot seem scared to interrupt what they're reacting to, but you go all in with pausing and going back so you have time to talk about everything that you want. It's great to see!
I really have fun playing rhythm games, but what got me into them was their music. FNF mods specifically gave me a whole new genre of epic, cool, and orchestral music I never knew I missed. Silly Billy was in a drought where not really any new mods had came out in a good bit of months, I think around 7. Despite it being in a time where people were losing interest, it completely revived the fnf fandom due to it's sheer quality in everything from Visuals, to gameplay(charting), to music. I love this song, and think it's my favorite, but I have only one I like that contends with it. Which actually is my suggestion you listen to next: All Stars, Mario Madness. It's a full classical piece with movements(portrayed as acts, which it has 4) but I highly recommend if you like this, then check out All Stars. (P.S.) I love how you said that you're inclined to not like it, cause it's a rhythm game, which a lot of people agree with and do. But I'm really happy even as a musician that this was good, and also gives me extra confidence to tell my friends about it. (not that you care lol, but the story is also interesting too, but I'm not expecting you to like it.
This is a really funny place to start with Friday Night Funkin lol. I've been out of the loop on this game for probably between 1 and 2 years now but it's an indie rhythm game inspired by the gameplay of PaRappa the Rapper and the culture of Newgrounds. The formula for the gameplay is meant to be like a rap battle except you're listening to and watching what the opponent does because the game is about to make you repeat it back to them, altho the formula has evolved a lot so that back and forth style isn't always the case anymore, but you can see some of the holdovers from that style like how you can see the opponents notes even if you're not in a song or a section that copies them. The base game is fun, but this game also has a HUGE modding scene, some of my favorite mods are Vs Whitty, Smoke Em Out Struggle, and Tricky. I'd been seeing a lot of ppl talk about Silly Billy and so when I saw you upload this I was like huh maybe it's worth checking out, and goddAMN that vocal part at the end is some of the coolest shit I've ever seen.
There aren't many random instrumental songs that are so engrossing I'd listen to a six minute track all the way through. But I randomly clicked on Silly Billy, with no idea what it was, and I watched the whole thing. Everybody remembers the climax, but everybody heard the climax because the whole track is killer.
It’s honestly so awesome to see actual music producers coming out to react to this song. This song is just great all around and it’s honestly the peak of Fnf modding lol
"Brass. Leave the woodwinds out." I played clarinet in high school and as much as I loved to play, I don't even know why we were on the field sometimes lol. There was something so moving about the brass just blasting when it's done well.
Please do KEYGEN CHURCH next. The best way I could describe the music is if a classical organ saw death metal breakcore and said aloud, "Yah we can make this work." It is a truly new music experience.
To give a baseline runover of Friday Night Funkin (Which I will call FnF) is that it's a single player game where you typically control the character on the right, with a large majority of songs not having lyrics. The base game itself is generally pretty small and has little gameplay outside of only hitting the notes, however that's where the modding community shines. The modding community is one reason for the game's popularity boom with some admittedly very bad and very cringe mods but also some absolutely impeccable mods, with classics such as Vs Whitty and Vs Tricky to more recent mods such as Mario's Madness. The modding community has some seriously talented music artists, some songs even being top trending on social medias for some time. If you checked out other mods, I would really recommend it, there's a large farm of good music that you could check out, and I know there are others in the comments that would recommend their personally liked mods. If I were to recommend 2 older ones and 2 newer ones, I'd recommend Vs Whitty (The first mod with unique music) and Vs Tricky for the older mods, and for newer ones I'd recommend Mario's Madness V2 and Vs Ourple Guy V3, there's also Hypno's Lullaby for a sort of middle ground (but it's being updated soon after stalled development from being cancelled for a time)
If you listen closely in the "Just LOOOOOOONG ENOUGH TO SEE MY WAYYY" bit, you can hear the voice of Yourself's (The song opponent's) girlfriend. If you also look at the red flame-like aura that momentarily surrounds Yourself, you can see Herself's face as well.
This FNF mod also has a hidden game in it called garn47 that you need to play to unlock some new songs and it is an absolute fever dream. Honestly one of the best FNF mods in recent memory
9:07 this is like a light snack for fnf players They be playing a song that has keys everywhere with the speed of 3x whilw 15 notes and still say its challenging
It was interesting to see you enjoy the Pico song (Pico is the little orange-haired boy). I wasn't sure how I felt about it in the first opening. I remember seeing an FNF music producer, as you could say, called "Retrospector" say that his main issue with it was that it didn't use a unique chromatic. For some of the best you could react to: Unbeatable from the Mario Madness Mod Release from the Garcello mod For one of the most strange-sounding ones: You Can't Run from the original sonic.exe mod. I flip back and forth on whether or not it sounds good. It'd also be cool if you could react to the songs from the original game and compare them to the Erect remixes. It'd be very interesting to see what you have to say about Spookeez.
its soo cool watching u pause on things that i would not even react to and then u repeat it and it all gets to me like this is cool man watching a dude thats great in music (in general ) just reacting to music thnks for reactin to this its so cool to watch you´re reaction
I don't know how to feel that he says "What the fuck how are you supposed to play that!" and my only reaction being, "isn't that easy...?" I think I played to much fnf...
Hey, this is my first time too (My god the "I'LL MAKE… YOU SAY… YOUR PROUD… OF ME!" I cried, I don't cry a lot, it's like he's crying for help and approval 😕)
The explanation is actually a lot sadder, the character that sings is called "yourself" and was made by a person who went by the name divide. Unfortunately he passed in his sleep due to cancer, so the people who made this song made it in tribute to him. So the lyrics are basically his creation wishing that it's creator could have "stayed awake" long enough to see it reach the heights it has.
This mod made me rejoin the FNF community, now that more of these mods were made theres bangers like Twiddlefinger, Subterfuge and The Amazing Grace fly high Divide, you really fixed me lmao.
i love how you review everything in this whole "it's cool BECAUSE" rather than just pausing every 2 mins saying "this sounds awesome lets keep going" keep it up man great video
Funny thing is that I play a Roblox version with same notes and all but I hit the notes of silly billy( the reflection) so I have to hit a lot of notes during the reflection stage when he goes down to bf size
You should check out Ultrakill OST For some intense, overwhelming tracks -Order -War -Tenebre Rosso Sangue (I highly suggest this one) -He's the Light in my darkness -Sands of Tide And for more calmer tracks -Deep Blue -The World looks Red ((I also highly suggest this one) -War without Reason -Requiem
If I had it guess, any part that sounds like the “I’ll make you say how proud you are of me” is likely a chorus. Because they did a similar progression at the beginning
You should react to an ost called "Roland Venture Crabitalist". Its from a newer soulslike game another crabs treasure and the whole game has great music. The ost is about 2 min.
i dont know if everyone feals like this when playing FNF. but i have no idea how im actually able to play the game, when i play it i just think that my hand has a mind of its own wit hthe speed its going

I'd LOVE to see you try out more fnf mods, they're all so insane in the music department. There are plenty of other songs in this mod that goes by the name of Hit single, some of those songs being Fakebaby, Tricheal, Darnell Wet Fart (yes that's the actual name), and Joyous to name a few. There's thousands of other big mods that have amazing music. Mario's Madness is a mod that came out recently which has amazing tracks such as Paranoia, Alone, Unbeatable, All-Stars, I HATE YOU, Bad Day, Starman Slaughter, Nourishing Blood, and many more. Sonic Legacy is another mod that doesn't have many songs right now due to it being in a demo, but the big song in it is called Free4Me/Obiturary. FNF Lullaby is also a pretty big mod! Disension, Shitno, Insomnia, Purin, and Monochrome are also pretty well-known songs in the community! Finding big-named mods are pretty good for finding music. Most of the people who worked on Silly Billy also work on plenty of other mods like the ones I just mentioned, and they pretty much never miss. There is so much more to the FNF modding scene, and if you wanna look into it you've just barely scratched the surface.
Awesome! If you’re reacting to Friday Night Funkin’, I recommend checking out the 3 main songs of the Sonic.EXE mod for this game. It’s my favorite mod and has amazing songs, and not just the main 3, but loads more outside the story!
Totally on/off topic but a band that this song reminds me of is Anamanaguchi. Chiptune-Rock Fusion/Edm band that specializes in just filling your ears with pleasant walls of sound, while not at all convoluting the mix.
i like how the whole community was shocked when this came on, not only because of the quality of the song, but LYRICS. the main thing is that the game doesn't have lyrics, so when he actually sang and we as the player could understand words was actually shocking
you should check out the peanuts mod for fnf; its an incomplete mod but the music has been buzzing in the community nonstop since its half-release and I think you'd find it nice too

It plays out very "call and response" almost with the opposing character (especially at at lower difficulties), which is the back and forth you're seeing between the two characters here, with Boyfriend and the opposing character often mimicking each other with varying degrees of embellishments as they "battle."
you should've said "the character on the right" cause they both have red hats lol
ANOTHER MUSICIAN REACTING TO SILLY BILLY?? NATURE IS HEALING
another sick thing to notice that i just noticed watching this video-, the arrow colors signify when that note happens within a measure
Red arrows happen on the main beats of the rhythm (1, 2, 3, 4), Blue arrows happen on the eighth note beats between them, and Green arrows happen on the sixteenth notes between those, so a full pattern of 8 sixteenth notes in a row looks like Red -> Green -> Blue -> Green -> Red -> Green -> Blue -> Green (you can see this at 14:22)
Oh that is cool. Super visual notation guide. I like it
This song is so good, my only problem with it is the walls of sound you were talking about.
8:53 HAHA HIS REACTION
😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Honestly, out of all the FNF songs I've seen, this is hands down the most musically incredible one I've ever seen. The chorus foreshadowing, the personality between both sides of the call and response, the background beats perfectly synergizing with the "vocals", and it all comes together into a song that I genuinely cannot stop listening to.
What are we checking out next???
I'd love to see some more Monster Hunter reactions, like Valstrax' theme would be cool
Theres also mario madness v2 fnf thats also another mod.
Naruto openings, I’m sure you’d love them !!
I think you should check out some Ultrakill music, they've been covered by a lot of other music reactors but I'd like to hear your take on it!
Some most notable ones would be Order, Altars of Apostasy, and Castle Vein. Lot of Leitmotifs as well.
i would love to see more Terraria Calamity mod soundtrack especially Stained, brutal Calamity or The roar of the Jungle Dragon
One thing I love is the chords and tones forshadowing the lyrical breakdown at the end
Oh, thats the guy i started watching cause of jojo finding a community ive been in for 3 years
A big part of how to hit the insane amount of notes is the same muscle memory you use for typing.
It's great to see!
this finally happened
I don't know what freaks me out more. You reacting to this, or the fact that we're both wearing the exact same shirt
Maybe both
I really have fun playing rhythm games, but what got me into them was their music.
The original game also got a few new updates after being radio silent for about 3 years.
This song is just great all around and it’s honestly the peak of Fnf modding lol
anyone else notice that the characters become perfectly in sync at the very very end
"Brass. Leave the woodwinds out."
I played clarinet in high school and as much as I loved to play, I don't even know why we were on the field sometimes lol. There was something so moving about the brass just blasting when it's done well.
Hey there! Art designer here! We are so glad you enjoyed this mod and we’ll make more in the near future ❤
If I were to recommend 2 older ones and 2 newer ones, I'd recommend Vs Whitty (The first mod with unique music) and Vs Tricky for the older mods, and for newer ones I'd recommend Mario's Madness V2 and Vs Ourple Guy V3, there's also Hypno's Lullaby for a sort of middle ground (but it's being updated soon after stalled development from being cancelled for a time)
It's wild to me that Silly Billy sorta 'broke containment' from the FNF space and got music reaction channels analyzing it.
It's so crazy that even Professional's are even seeing silly billy, Damn silly billy is amazing!
Zamn bro really paused at the lyric part 😭
SORRY LOL
@@DrumRollTonyReacts nah it alright im glad more people are reacting to this song 🥰
This FNF mod also has a hidden game in it called garn47 that you need to play to unlock some new songs and it is an absolute fever dream. Honestly one of the best FNF mods in recent memory
Where this song kinda makes a different is that absolutely stunning visuals parred with the absolutely chorus heavy hooks which just gives you chills.
9:07 this is like a light snack for fnf players
They be playing a song that has keys everywhere with the speed of 3x whilw 15 notes and still say its challenging
That's completely true
Seeing him being frighten how fast players play FNF, just makes me laugh
Lol, yea soooo frightened 🤣
@@DrumRollTonyReacts 👀👀👀👀👀
First Lionmight and now Tony! Very happy to see people outside the FNF community recognizing the musical value of its songs
For some of the best you could react to:
Unbeatable from the Mario Madness Mod
Release from the Garcello mod
For one of the most strange-sounding ones:
You Can't Run from the original sonic.exe mod.
9:02 its crazy to think that i think im ass at rhythm games but then i watch people who dont play them astonished by something i find easy
LOL yeah I can see that. These games are wild to most musicians as the real life rhythm games are much different. Its a wild concept to watch
the insight into call and response happening a lot is on point because FNF is a game about rap battles
Been waiting for this reaction 🙏
Dude you are my absolute FAVORITE music reactor! Thank you so much for doing this song, I’ve been obsessed with it since I heard it 😂
man whata great react and analysis, love the video man
I don't know how to feel that he says "What the fuck how are you supposed to play that!" and my only reaction being, "isn't that easy...?" I think I played to much fnf...
@@eeveeboi7174 wait Divide made this, that makes me feel worse
This mod made me rejoin the FNF community, now that more of these mods were made theres bangers like Twiddlefinger, Subterfuge and The Amazing Grace
fly high Divide, you really fixed me lmao.
1:10 player on the right, non-player on the left
Can't believe it, you reacted to a fnf mod soundtrack, never thought this day would ever come.
It's so awesome seeing this game progress over the last 4 years, and now seeing MUSIC PROFESSIONALS react to mods of the game 😭
i love how you review everything in this whole "it's cool BECAUSE" rather than just pausing every 2 mins saying "this sounds awesome lets keep going" keep it up man great video
Funny thing is that I play a Roblox version with same notes and all but I hit the notes of silly billy( the reflection) so I have to hit a lot of notes during the reflection stage when he goes down to bf size
You should check out Ultrakill OST
For some intense, overwhelming tracks
-Order
-War
-Tenebre Rosso Sangue (I highly suggest this one)
-He's the Light in my darkness
-Sands of Tide
And for more calmer tracks
-Deep Blue
-The World looks Red ((I also highly suggest this one)
-War without Reason
-Requiem
OHMYGOD NO WAY OUT OF ALL MUSIC UA-camRS
i’m loving the trend of people checking out silly billy, it rocks to see this and fnf getting a lot more attention
If I had it guess, any part that sounds like the “I’ll make you say how proud you are of me” is likely a chorus. Because they did a similar progression at the beginning
I love how this one song saved the whole game, changed how fans make songs, and is the most praised by profesionals.
Your analysis was super interesting. Would love to see you analyse more Friday Night Funkin' music. Modded or base game
9:01 his reaction to the gameplay is so fucking real 😭
4:08 honestly. Kick all the woodwinds out
You should react to an ost called "Roland Venture Crabitalist". Its from a newer soulslike game another crabs treasure and the whole game has great music. The ost is about 2 min.
Man this song is so good 😂 love your analysis
MY WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY🔥🔥
MY WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYY!!!!! 🗣😔🔥🔥
I really love it because some mods don't modify boyfriend's voice like it's flat 7:45 like this one that wiggly voice
i dont know if everyone feals like this when playing FNF. but i have no idea how im actually able to play the game, when i play it i just think that my hand has a mind of its own wit hthe speed its going
Actually the mod is called "Hit Single", and theirs a LOT more to it!
Lop as a trumpet player i like to imagine trying to play 17:53 to 17:58 on it. The chaos your fingers whould go through but its the only wa i can best keep track of my beats😂😂😂
You should react to the Funkadelix Fnf mod, it’s the normal game but all the songs (they added) have lyrics for the whole thing
i love seeing people react to this song
you got the facts down thanks for taking a hearing to this pure peak
❤ Drum and Bugle corp heaven right here!!! Melt my face off!🎉
Love the vids man ❤❤
I'd LOVE to see you try out more fnf mods, they're all so insane in the music department.
Its cool to see FNF from the perspective of someone who's familiar with music. Especially Silly Billy. This song is so fire
You should def check some of rhythm doctor levels, i think you will love it!
Awesome! If you’re reacting to Friday Night Funkin’, I recommend checking out the 3 main songs of the Sonic.EXE mod for this game. It’s my favorite mod and has amazing songs, and not just the main 3, but loads more outside the story!
This video made me say how proud I am of you
Totally on/off topic but a band that this song reminds me of is Anamanaguchi. Chiptune-Rock Fusion/Edm band that specializes in just filling your ears with pleasant walls of sound, while not at all convoluting the mix.
Let's be honest, we all came here for *THAT* one part
the facts hes astonished by how the dude recording is playing what he is makes me very proud for full comboing double trouble v2 on the left side
The funniest part is how he’s mentioning his shock as to how people do this when the song really isn’t that difficult, even compared to other fnf mods
Unexpected but surprisingly cool to see you react on this.
The fact that you went back and saw the red flame yet you couldn't tell that was " Girl friend "
👍 My bad for focusing on the music and not the colors of flames 😅
i like how the whole community was shocked when this came on, not only because of the quality of the song, but LYRICS. the main thing is that the game doesn't have lyrics, so when he actually sang and we as the player could understand words was actually shocking
you should check out the peanuts mod for fnf; its an incomplete mod but the music has been buzzing in the community nonstop since its half-release and I think you'd find it nice too
glad this reached to this channel
