  • This is a tour of Paya Lebar, Singapore. Another NHK style video from Singapore. Today is Paya Lebar. It's a interesting area where many Malay communities like to hang out. There's a Malay market (video here • Would You Buy This?🐌 S... ), friendly locals, the new PLQ Mall, and a insanely cute cat who likes to hang out at the temple. Join me on today's expedition of Payal Lebar

Ghib! 😀 I was happy to see you in my hood. Literally, you were steps from my condo when you were shown in front of the durian shop on the corner of Lorong 33. And ironically, my gf and I had walked past the temples today, so it was a fun surprise to see you there in the video. You’ve definitely only scratched the surface of the treasures in this neighborhood. Feel free to reach out, and I’ll show you some tasty eats. 🤘

    この地区、シンガポールのどこよりもマレー語・インドネシア語が通じやすいので大好きです。
    何年も工事しててやっと開いた最新鋭のPLQモールと、昔ながらのCityPlazaの比較が面白いですね。

That is a papaya fruit next to the pineapples.
You are pretty brave to wander around the back streets of Geylang haha. Thankfully it's day time. It's a whole different animal at night and some of the old houses are where most of the brothels are situated with other illegal activities too if you are lucky to chance upon. They are frequented by all walks of life, many foreign workers included looking to get some form of 'release'.
Nowadays with the Covid situation, I think the red light district is not spared.

Ghib San, not sure if you know about the Gurkha army in Singapore. They’re highly trained soldiers from Nepal and play a big part in maintaining the security of Singapore. They and their families reside at Mount Vernon Camp, near Taiseng/Paya Lebar and you can often see them in the vicinity for exercise or just about their daily life. You can easily recognize them from their facial features and built. Not sure if it’s appropriate to feature them due to security sensitivity but could be an interesting content for your channel :)

And you should try Arnold's Fried Chicken in City Plaza (that's the old looking mall you visited near the end of the video). Really good fried spring chicken. Can probably try it for your other channel.

Another great video. Yes..you are right, and smarter than a lot of foreigners...just because I think, you took the time to travel to less know areas..
Singapore is not that expensive a country as many foreigners think. It all depends on where in Singapore you are. Food is cheap at the hawker centres and other stuff like clothing too in the outlying areas. I visited Singapore in 2018 expecting prices to be way higher in Canada, but really they are about the same, with hawker centre food being way cheaper than in Canada. I don't think Singapore deserves to be in the World's most expensive city spot. It is quite affordable. Public transport is also very cheap. In Canada, it is 2-3 times higher. Hotel accommodation is also slightly cheaper and much better too for the price you pay. Singaporeans have much to be grateful for but I hear from my friend there that many complain a lot and think the grass is greener overseas. It really is not.

There's rare colonial pre-WW2 art deco architecture, a literally hidden izakaya serving yakitori over bincho-tan, an old temple dedicated to Monkey from Journey to the West and an incredible 70-year old shop serving Hainanese Curry which takes 3 days to make. Would be glad to show you around!

I am a Singaporean who also have a love for Japan. I have frequented Tokyo and Osaka for as many as 6 times a year since 2000-2003. Then I went to Hong Kong from 2005 to til now. So for 15 years, I have not seen Singapore grow. You are now, with your videos, showing me Singapore that I have never seen before. How ironic that I am learning about Singapore from a Japanese. Trust you are enjoying Singapore. Just a question though, what would you do , or rather, what other content will you make after you completed exploring all of Singapore?

Some suggestions : Toa Payoh is where I grew up in. Not sure if you have already explored over there. Then I moved to Bishan, which is just across Braddell Road from Toa Payoh Lorong 8.
Then there is Sungei Gedong, in Lim Chu Kang, (nearest MRT Choa Chu Kang?) where I did most of my military service. There is a really LOOOONG highway type road which the Airforce uses as an emergency runway.

+Ojisan you may like to consider making a video on the karayuki-san who came from poverty stricken parts of Japan to work in mid 1900’s Singapore. Many were buried at Japanese cemetery here . Also buried there are some WW2 Japanese military personnels. Tombstones there are written in Japanese. The Japanese’s Association Singapore are custodians of the cemetery (and a small Japanese temple next to it.) It is part of Singapore’s history and of early Japanese overseas . By the way there are some UA-cam videos on this topic which you may like to explore. You are highly intelligent and creative to make amazing YT videos of Singapore. Many do not enjoy the success which you did.

It simply means to submit to One who Create you.. the one who submit is call Muslim....so you can adopt any culture as Long as it doesn’t go against Islamic way of life... islam teaches you cleanliness.. teach you to pray to one God.. to dress modestly.. eat healthy..to treat others kindly.. to feed the poor.. to not discriminate others base on their colours, belief, culture... it’s does not belongs to Middle East people.. its universal... you can find all colours of muslims all over the world...everyone and everything is created in submission .. only human has the choice not to submit to their Creator.. .. while everyone is moving and improving their lives .. you want the Malays the go back to worship their ancestors and abandon this beautiful way of life..?By the way my friend.. I’m not Malay...I invite you to understand Islam better if not the muslims.. there are bad example of muslims... like there bad example of people from other religion... Ghib, you may want to check out the Taoist and HIndu temples at Ubi that share the same premise - address is Sze Cheng Keng Taoist Temple/Sri Muneswarar Peetam Hindu Temple
,16 Ubi Rd 4 ,Singapore 408616. And also the Loyang Tua Pek Kong Temple, that houses deities from three religions - Taoist, Buddhist, and Hindu - and also a Muslim kramat (shrine). Truly exemplify religious harmony in Singapore.

Ghib Ojisan, has not been to west side of Singapore. Or even Northwest side of Singapore. Maybe you could explore there or even Pulau Ubin

if im not mistaken, the chinese temple follows ancient Chinese, Tang Dynasty style architecture which Heian Japan was heavily influenced in the past (you can see alot of these influence from ancient buildings in Kyoto)

wow looks like singapore's operating normally. We're still doing social distancing in indonesia, so the main streets are empty and most of the malls are still closed

Aude Social distancing protocols have been tightened here recently. He must have recorded this just before they did. These days all places of worship are closed in Singapore, and entering malls seem as challenging as getting through obstacle courses.

Hi Ghib, the Paya Lebar area is best visited during the yearly Muslim fasting month as they'd usually set up a giant pasar malam (also known as the Bazaar). The whole district will be beautifully lighted up. Unfortunately though due to the Covid-19 situation, the bazaar might not happen ):

ACTUALLY, Peranakans are the offspring of the early Chinese settlers who married the local women in Malaya (basically that was what Malaysia plus Singapore was originally called) and Indonesia...

    パヤレバー駅前の木陰でやたらたくさんの人がピクニックしてたのを見ました。 そして空軍機?が爆音で上空を飛んでいたのが印象的でした。
