I Want To Live Here | Tiong Bahru Expedition🇸🇬

- Today I visited Tiong Bahru district in Singapore for the first time. Tiong Bahru is one of the oldest estates in Singapore. You can feel the history and culture, and what's interesting is that it is also famous for hip cafes and shops. But what surprised me most was the air raid shelter at the basement of an HDB (Public housing). The monkey god temple was fascinating as well. Who knew Tiong Bahru had all of these?
00:45 | Where is Tiong Bahru? Briefing
02:15 | Sneaking Inside an old HDB
03:15 | Air Raid Shelter
04:31 | Passing by an old HDB
05:03 | Food Hunt at Tiong Bahru Food Hawker Centre
09:00 | Cafe Street
After a long stroll, I confirmed that Tiong Bahru has something more to offer than cool cafes. A must go spot in Singapore! Huat!!

#Singapore #TiongBahru
Glad you love Tiong Bahru, it's hawker is my favourite one in Singapore. There are many good food there, i used to go there every morning for breakfast. Let me intro u to my fav (personal fav)
In the market:
1. 238 coffee stall #02-81 , best coffee here
2. Yuan ji 源记 fishball noodle #02-72, simple old school but v tasty. (Had been eating with this minced meat noodle kway teow soup from uncle and aunt for over a decade)
3. Tiong bahru Lor Mee #02-80 (a lot of ppl love 178 lor mee, but i tried both many times and come to the conclusion I preferred Tiong Bahru Lor Mee next to 238 coffee, the gravy is nicer and more ingredients)
4. Hwa yuen porridge #02-78 good decent and piping hot porridge.
5. Teck Seng Soya bean milk #02-69 , must try their ultra smooth bean curb bowl
6. Koh brother pig's organ soup #02-29 worth a try, their glutinous rice in pig's intestine
7. Zhong yu yuan wei wanton noodle #02-30
Wanton noodle is so so but do try their signature 不见天, delicious.
8. HarisAnn Delights #02-25 loads up all your fav nonya kueh here, i recommend their onek onek
9. Tiong Bahru Teochew Kueh #02-02, as it's name, try their traditional rice kueh and soon kueh with sweet sauce and chilli.
Outside along the road,
1. Ah Chang Porridge 65 Tiong Poh Road
2. Por Kee eating house 69 Seng poh lane
3. Old Tiong Bahru BKT 58 Seng Poh Road
4. Loo's Hainanese Curry rice and There is a Mee Pok stall here also nice 71 Seng poh road
Enjoy!
Growing up in Tiong Bahru, I agree with your recommendations! :)
I stay there too😃
Tq for your recommendation!
@@Alexis-rh7nz thanks for your approval. Do add on as my list only cover the good food in the morning as i m usually there around 7 to 8am. I know afternoon there are many other stall open that r nice too but i have yet try them. Heard that the Fried hokkien mee n the chicken rice along the row of 238 coffee is nice.
@@shan2lu most welcome!!
Tiong Bahru is where you can spend $3 or $30 on breakfast and it'll be both as good
10:43 dude you walked past a local bakery with the yellow sign, they are an old name and have great pastries!
galicier bakery, super good. you should buy some patries for your wife and family!
@@sixfiend They have an outlet at Serangoon Central too.
Ghib San, you finally made it to TB.
Bring Oksan & in-laws to eat Loo's Curry Rice next time. Best time is around 11am. Good luck to house-shopping. Gambate kudasai ne.
Singapore is such a small place, yet you always make it seem so interesting with your simple videos. This is something that even local television channel can't even hope to do since the shows are usually fake and staged. Your videos are spontaneous and authentic which makes them so special.
Yes, I miss this place, I lived there during my childhood! Still love this place
Oh yessss Tiong Bahru market and hawker centre , please visit again in the morning for the siewmai as u crave for. Also try walk along the Bukit Ho Swee area (where I live) , have nice Hainanese curry rice and a nice Chinese temple along the stretch of Havelock Road there
Beo Crescent Curry Rice! Must order the pork chop! Yumz!
I went to school in the area and fell in love with the old SIT flats there and in Bukit Merah. I always wanted to live one of those when I grew up. And then I grew up, and those flats became so expensive (while many got demolished) and out of my budget. 😢
u just walked past a traditional cake shop Galicier selling affordable n authentic nonya kueh aka peranakan confectionery. I frequent there.
U r easily accepted by our people. Because u r kind too.
Great that you point out that tray returning are still greatly encouraged everywhere to assist the elderly cleaners (eg on your NUS town food court video)
You walked past on several occasions including Tiong Bahru Hawker Center where there are tray return system making it easier for the next diners and ease the workload of the Cleaners.
But there are numerous occasions Japanese dining at Tiong Bahru Hawker Center left without clearing their trays?? Why the great disparity when you do it in Japan and not when you’re in Singapore?? So pls share with our fellow residents it’s only humanely right to do the right thing not because you’re forced to but it’s the right thing to do.
Also emphasising the point (with the Taiwanese video) Singaporeans do stick to the rules and that’s a great Singaporean trademark!
Ah, I love watching your videos. You should try Tiong Bahru market’s chwee kueh stall!!! It’s the best~
The property price of the Tiong Bahru area is not cheap because it is a centralized district.
The current Tiong Bahru is a wreck compared to its heyday up to the late 90s. People who live there have a certain air without pesky foreigners and so safe, gentrified and serene that even Teresa Teng stayed there for a while without having crazy fans at her doorstep. The food in the past all round would even supersede Michelin standards. Sadly, it is just an ordinary rock now under the poor development by the authorities who let massive highrise and steep property prices ruin a once really spectacular estate.
Hi Ghib, pls visit Jurong next. I'm sure you will have a lot more things to film! I kinda wanna see your take on different areas of Sg.
You might have thought how nice a bowl of Wonton Mee can be.. wait till you try that one in Tiong Bahru market (food centre).
Haha so near me ....but I don’t like the lor mee with fried fish shark meat. There’s a popular coffeeshop selling curry rice .... I haven’t try but taxi Driver told me it’s a must try
The temple - monkey God
you should try the "LOR MEE" is the best !
The way you eat... make me feel hungry leh. 🤣🤣🤣
Try sin hoi sai the Chinese zi char restaurant just behind tiong bahru bakery. It is really delicious and at affordable prices.
I think I haven’t seen you explore Jalan Besar area? from the hip cafes /bars along Tyrwhitt Road to those lanes between Jalan Besar and Serangoon Road. Somewhat regret to say that you won’t get the views like that of a Sunday night when the south Asian workers used to gather in full force. Mebbe due to these workers, I somehow feel this area isn’t as gentrified yet when compared to Tiong Bahru. Oh yah , for good food can try the Sungei Road laksa at Blk 27 Jalan Berseh.. $3 for a small bowl but has Long history plus their way of cooking the broth over charcoal. This is the other laksa stall that has quite a reputation apart from Katong. Another institution is Swee Choon dim sum
TB food centre has became too modernised after renovations. Not many stalls are opened at night thus making it less than an ideal spot for cheap dinner and supper. It was more lively before the renovations.
Nice video! (Also CAT!!!!!!)
I thought you like Yishun.
In some of the "older" places, the chinese characters are read top to down, then right to left (compared to the current left to right, top to down)
it’s like the manga format lol
Tiong bahru flats not cheap bro
Kim Tian Road?
Why not try to live in Malaysia singapore is beautiful island nation but too expensive . But in Malaysia it's very cheap and also in Vietnam! Try these place! Singapore mostly imports their food in Malaysia!
By default, Singapore is a multicultural and multiracial country.
Hence, tired of eating the same kind of food everyday, you can opt to enjoy other ethnic foods.
Enjoy exploring.
Cheers
Tiong Bahru is one of the oldest districts in Singapore, I used to visit grand parent who lived there while I was a kid; it brought back great memories. Great to see the revival of a old neighborhood, thanks for the video!
The shrine is dedicated to the Monkey God in chinese folklore. It’s the same figure that was the inspiration behind Son Goku in Dragonball. (Many of the characters and incidents in Dragonball were linked to the chinese novel Journey to the West)
こないだタクシーの運転手さんとお話してたら、おっちゃんのほうから「Do you know Oji!? who is Japanese UA-camr. I love him!」
The monkey god is actually the one in the Journey to the West, Sun Wukong. Or the Japanese know it as Son Goku.
And they make it into an Anime, Dragon ball XD
the first journey to the West drama series is still the best for me
And you read it from the right - 齊天大聖
At 10:45 in your video, you walked pass this bakery store called "Tiong Bahru Galicier" that served very good nonya kueh, especially "Kueh Dar Dar".
haha i noticed that too. just left my comment about him missing Galicier
11:10 "Qi Tian Da Sheng" that's the name that the Monkey King (Sun Wu Kong) gave himself
Literally means, Saint equivalent to heaven.
@@weizhen77 i think the official english translation is Great Sage Equal of Heaven.
Tiong Bahru needs more than 12 minutes. Your overseas viewers would like the nonya kuehs from Galicier and eat mee pok at a coffee shop that was used to film “Mee Pok Man” which turns into a yakitori at night.
Happy house hunting!
I literally LOL when he meow back to converse with the cat ( 2:18 ) 😹😹 And yes, Tiong Bahru is one of my fav place in Singapore too!!
Istg ghib is the only interesting Singaporean youtuber ,Love your vids and I watch every single one of them
Ghib san is not Singaporean BUT seems totally localised already!
@@UncleAT he know so much more about Singapore than me😂
So true! I thought Tiong Bahru sounds like middle road or something. Gosh it was a cemetery
Yes he is the only Singapore based UA-camr whom I watch.
The bad thing is every property is expensive there lol.
I've lived in Tiong Bahru for about a year now, and I'm still discovering new places that I've never been to before! I love this neighborhood!
That's suppose to be read from the right to the left. Qi tian da Sheng. Title of the monkey God.
Ahhh why didn’t get the char siew pau (roasted pork in the video lol) ??? Super yummy lah and their siew mai is nicer than many restaurants
And nobody recommended you the Tiong Bahru Chwee Kueh??!!
Amazing. I didn't know there's air raid shelter 😳😳😳

There is? Lol i didnt know there was one.. and i live in tiong bahru.. lol
Lol when u and the cat meow
Thank you for doing all things about Singapore, as an ex -Singaporean ( migrated 32 years ago) even tough we returned for visit pretty much every year through your video we can see much more and about to find out more food outlets.
I'm an east-er and i've never seen this much of tiong bahru, thanks Ghib for showing this part of SG!
HDB at Tiong Bahru area are very expensive 😂
Yup. My 2rm bto flat cost me 270k.
10:28 lol shaking hands is almost a reflex to end a meeting. luckily Ghib remembered we're living in an apocalypticorona world
Tiong Bahru vibe is like no other. Love the place, the quiet spots where you can chill and enjoy the scenery. Walking around Tiong Bahru is always a pleasure. Looking forward to your revisit. Keep it up Ghib-san!
Have you vlog Pulau Ubin?.... You can cycle there, I heard.
Just some interesting bits. Seems the word "Tiong", which means cemetary/grave, is the Hokkien pronunciation of the word 塚/冢. It means a big grave/cemetary on higher ground etc. And funnily enough, it is found in the Japanese last name 大塚. So does the name mean a really really big grave in Japanese?
The Hainanese scissor cut curry rice is highly recommended.
That is not an original stall.
Wow they recognized you even with the mask covering half your face 😂
Excellent coverage of Tiong Bahru heritage area, especially with all many wonderful hawker food. Though I’d add on 1 shop to spice things up. There’s this noodle shop called “Shannxi Noodles”. Although its from China, they have this noodle called “Biang Biang mian (面)”. What makes this intriguing is the character “Biang”... which is perhaps the MOST complex Chinese character with 57 strokes. Check out the noodles... its quite special ! On top of all the great food highlighted. Tiong Bahru is definitely one of many S’porean foodie favourites.
For the price of a HDB flat at Tiong Bahru, you can buy a condo elsewhere
You passby Galicier Pastry shop. They sell nice kuehs there. Don't bother getting their cakes just go for the kuehs!
personally i love the east side. grew up here, 40 years here. and many singaporeans also agree katong which is in the east has many amazing makan options
Very expensive area
Practically in town
Tempting to spend a lot on hawker food closeby
ping me next time! line: fourthandthird
i'm right above Prive Tiong Bahru.
uncleの言っていたpre HDBは、SIT(Singapore Improvement Trust)の事ですね👍
You can be Singapore Tourism ambassador since your videos are so interesting. I love to travel to Japan so beautiful
That prawn mee is one of the nicest food there to me. I've grown up eating their stall.
IKR ! I never tried their food before they participated the tv show, but i think the one now is very good. The good mix of chili and fried shallots, potent soup, fresh prawns, and most important it is not expensive. A little strange they don't get much queue though, probably most customers go for the stall next to them... 😅
@@ixactan69 I like the way they prepare the sauce on another bowl and they pour on the noodle instead of putting the noodles on the sauce and use the ladle to stir the noodles.
@@ixactan69 because the wanton noodle char siew is really really gd.
Hi Glib, Thanks for doing a take of my neighbourhood. I believe its one of the most unique one in Singapore. If youre looking into touring the homes there, hit me up and i'll gladly welcome you in to have a tour in it. Arigato Gozaimasu!
I think you respect n love your mother-in-law alot as you always mention your mother-in-law in your videos. I hope your wife will not be jealous of her mother. Haha..Tiong Bahru is a nice place to live in as it has lots of good food and is central of Singapore. The houses there are rather expensive.
Just behind ikea
U have buses to tiong bahru market, redhill market, bukit merah view market aka henderson, AV
welcome to my neighbourhood! Hope to see u around.
I don't think many Singaporeans are familiar with the word "munchies" when you asked the man at the prawn noodle stall, especially with hawker stalls.
U walked past Glacier Confectionery, must go try the traditional kueys! They are awesome!
I like Tiong bahru. I like this video.
Love all the comments here. Shall refer back to this video when I visit Tiong next time since there's so many recommendations in the comments section.
U r clever, the "Bao stall" so so only. Can don't try.
Tiong bahru bakery price rose up a lot over the years
Tiong bahru is a very interesting place, I like this place a lot too. You should walk thru all side lanes, a lot of interesting things to see.
I live here for 3 years, love the pace in here, definitely different from other places in singapore
Thanks for a great video, enjoyed it very much and hope to see more !
I love how you always greet the cats you see 😂 I do the same too though I don't call it Neko chan
Since you are so intrigued by the air raid shelters, fyi HDB blocks built in the late 80's also have public air raid shelters built into the basements below the void decks. This building plan was carried out for about a decade till it switched to the current plan of building bomb shelter "rooms" within each individual flat. These basement air raid shelters are currently still in place, often occupied by minimarts, childcare and tuition centers during peacetime, with clauses built into the leases for tenants to have to clear out within a certain amount of time should the authorities declare emergencies. They are rather inconspicuous though with just a door at the void decks. To find them you need to know which are the blocks built in the 80's-90's. This is an interesting topic that you may want to make a video about.
My in-laws stay there, one of the other units beside the ones you climbed up.
In the food centre, you should try Koh Brothers Pig Organ soup and Lor Mee (with shark meat).
Also, the famous Ah Chang Porridge along Tiong Poh Road.
At your last stop, you should walk to the other end. Foodie market is there and you can buy value for money meat - cheapest in Singapore.
I see kansai dialect in the translated subtitles 😂
It’s great and comforting to see a non Chinese taking a liking into our culture and history of Singapore! Thank you!
