Little Richard was my Mom’s favourite I can see why now . He’s fantastic wowwwwwww . Not only talented great sense of humour intelligent but a real lovely person . Great interview . Liberace and Little Richard two greats .
Both of these men had God given talents, but it took a lot of hard work to become the entertainers they were destined to become. Liberace played to nothing but sold out nights at the Las Vegas Hilton, and I can still feel the excitement. He improved every room. I regret greatly never having had the experience of seeing Little Richard. He reeked of talent, and self confidence. Above all else, Little Richard gave the glory to God. People have been known to complain over misplaced car keys, but to fight his way out of poverty(and take his family with him), without complaint, and then fight his way to the top is astonishing to me. I'll shut up now.
@Terry S. Little Richard was one of a kind. He lived in Watts, California, where I was raised. He was a devout Seventh Day Adventist"'...and always gave God the Glory, in all things. He was an ordained minister, and for a while, he preached at a ""Tent Revival Service""....in Los Angeles, on Crenshaw Bl. and Adams Blvd. Whenever Richard would come to L.A., he'd call, and my friend Peter, and I, would meet him at a restaurant in Hollywood. Richard was so silly at times, he'd always leave us laughing. Richard preached well, but he couldn't make a living singing ""Old Rugged Cross"".. he had to go back to the studio, record another hit, but it was always, God that he spoke of. Richard had a son, not sure what happened to him. He was simply, ""A Loving Man, who always shared, and showed, his love for God. At the rate this world is going, we might see Richard, kinda sorta soon!!!!
@@vivianclaiborne7653 How lucky you were to have known him. Your memories of him must be rich in humor, and spirituality. Yes, the world could sure use many more men like him. Thank you for sharing.
Talent isn't given and certainly not by "god" don't down play their hard work then try to recover by something "but it took hard work" IT WAS ALL HARD WORK. Your people "christians" were and are the ones making it difficult for people like them (gay) to just live their life..
@@hughmann9568 I've heard this nonsense from people just like you, with an opinion on what they think sounds intelligent, but it's not you know. I know it stings that God may have overlooked you in the talent department, but you can always make yourself useful by saying less, and in so doing, you'll be saying more. Granted, when you've had very little life experience, you tend to parrot what you've heard. When you become your own man, the mention of God won't intimidate you anymore.
@opalessence4818 By all accounts, he lived a very happy. content life after he returned to his faith and renounced his sinful ways. He was kind of a fixture in Nashville for years. BTW, his testimony is available in several interviews done over several decades and is very compelling.
Amen. Richard used this opportunity to tell listeners, drugs are not life giving, they are destructive. God is the giver of life, salvation, and love. Where are the entertainers with the courage to promote Jesus?
@@elizabethilling9387- This is what I remember most about him. Unfortunately, it was after his passing, as an old man on the stage at church talking about Jesus! He’s proof that you can be gay and not act on it.
God bless Little Richard! And Mike Douglas was so unique as a host, because he was always focused on the other person, not on trying to be a smart aleck for a cheap laugh, and he always tried to ask really kind and meaningful questions but without sounding hokey or like he was trying to exploit some emotion out of somebody. You got the feeling he cared about the person he was interviewing, and that was especially meaningful back in the day with the thoughtful and respectful way that he treated all the black guests that he had on his show. As a child shows like this made me think things out there were better than they really were between the races. Merv Griffin did an interview with Martin Luther King that just makes me want to cry now, to see Dr. King speak so eloquently even without a pulpit.

I so love Little Richard. Dig the way he gets that song going....like a steam train. He starts out with an audience clap, get that deep rockin' groove going...chug, chug, chug...then he adds a little at a time (guitar, bass drums, etc.), until that train is a huffin' and a puffin' down that track then he gets to the most important part...those incredible tenor sax vocals of his..swooping and soaring all over that train. To me he was the absolute embodiment of rock 'n roll.
Little Richard was one of a kind musician. We'll never see another like him. Same with Leon Russell. And they were friends. Ever listen to Leon's song "Crystal Closet Queen"?
Yes, Little Richard loved his Mother so very much. They also put very diverse personalities together to make great tv. Putting two poorly-closeted flamboyant celebrities on at the same time during a fashion show was genius.
LIBERACE was one of the greatest pianists of all time. He put on quite a show, true. But if you do a study of his recorded work, there's no question about his musical prowess. Technically perfect. Never a mistake, which is rare. I think it's a bit unfortunate that people appreciated his flash more than his musical genius. Little Richard on the other hand, was the real deal. More of a showman, but nonetheless, one of the greats. The Architect of Rock-n-Roll, without question Glad they put this together.
I’ve often wondered how many hours a day he practiced to get this good. I would think you could do nothing but practice in your life to be that great no matter the amount of talent.

@@aprilwest2402 I loved the fabulous, flamboyant Little Richard. When I was in fourth-grade my brothers and I had the opportunity to meet him along with The Marvellettes and Mary Wells one day at a nightclub on the chitlin' circuit my dad worked at. As I recall he had to deliver something after picking us up from school and took us with him. I'll never forget it as The Marvelletes, Mary Wells and Richard Pennyman ("the life of the party") were so kind, plus we got to see them practice a little before going home. ... Absent wig and make-up, Little Richard did a televised interview in a wheel chair in a Southern Illinois church. So far, so good. But for his relationship with the Lord, he said he was no longer gay. Really? Richard was gay til the day his eternity beckoned. And it's no secret he was a hedonist before he found "the Lord." The guilt was too much and, upon reflection, he had a "great awakening," then sought comfort in his southern Pentecostal church tradition. This isn't cynicism, it's my experience with the LR's of the world. His "aha" moment is somewhat typical with individuals of a certain age raised in very religious households. What one can say is he wasn't heterosexual, the opposite of your implication. In his twilight years he was able to "suppress" homosexual ideation (thoughts) to some extent. What Little Richard needed, in my humble but informed opinion, was a competent mental health professional to help him internalize a healthy lifestyle. Like Liberace, Richard lived in an age which demonized homosexuals, so they were tethered to their hermetically-sealed closets, more so because they were well known wealthy entertainers, thus had a lot to loose if "discovered." It wasn't for nothing Liberace successfully sued a tabloid for intimating he was a "queen," and won. They took their "business" underground, which is unhealthy, when not dangerous. But America has changed. And it's not turning back though some are trying to at the margins by targeting trans folk to gain political power. Etc. In the end they'll fail because "God don't like ugly." With due respect, Sister West.
Little Richard sometimes called himself 'The Bronze Liberace.' The house where he was born is about five minutes from my house. I met both LR and Liberace; I saw each of them live more than once . I have their autographs and photos taken with them hanging in my dressing room at home. :-) G!

Its really amazing to finally see and meet these classical figures in "real life" thanks to the magic of UA-cam. Before we could only read about them unless if you are lucky to go to a well equipped library or archive with audio and video equipment to watch those old tape reels used for bio-scope. Liberace was portrayed somewhere as aloof but in this interview he comes out as soft and gentle as wool. And of course, being the legend that he is, as immensely and extra-ordinarily talented.
He's sincere, too! What he says is true! 10 years ago, I myself was ill with blood poisoning, and by the conventioninal logic, I should have died.So I had to rack my brain to try out solutions. I thought that by rights , surely you can't be alright one moment, and at death's door the next moment! So, as Little Richard thought, I too thought that we need to be here "As long as the good Lord wants". So we have to disregard conventional thinking, because both Little Richard, and myself DID recover!

My dad and I will never forget that and still laugh about it today...!
Aww, I know Little was just like that.
That's truly amazing! You should write a book about your experiences on the strip. My friends band played Whisky in the 90's, and it was a great show! I've noticed that the truly great artists like Richard and others, never forget where they came from!
1970 I was 10 years old, used to watch Mike with my mom. Loved his shows but I never got to see Liberace play before. Dang, he was quite the showman.
Wow, I just found these awesome performances from Liberace and Little Richard! Now, this is pure talent💯. NO, lip-synching,fake band, can’t sing, naked/nasty dance, rapping and cursing. I miss real music but I’m so happy for UA-cam. RIP gentlemen🙏🏾

@@Victoria-ni3tf What a surprise! 🤣
I was amazed by this strange guest combination because it was unlikely that Little Richard and Liberace to be on the same TV show. Mike Douglas always brought people together. On a personal note, I am doing OK.
Richard was an amazing talent and bigger than life personality. Very intelligent and endlessly interesting. May he rest in peace. Loved this video
Well said 👏🏾
@Terry S.
Little Richard was one of a kind. He lived in Watts, California, where I was
raised. He was a devout Seventh Day Adventist"'...and always gave God
the Glory, in all things. He was an ordained minister, and for a while, he
preached at a ""Tent Revival Service""....in Los Angeles, on Crenshaw Bl.
and Adams Blvd. Whenever Richard would come to L.A., he'd call, and my
friend Peter, and I, would meet him at a restaurant in Hollywood. Richard
was so silly at times, he'd always leave us laughing. Richard preached
well, but he couldn't make a living singing ""Old Rugged Cross"".. he had
to go back to the studio, record another hit, but it was always, God that
he spoke of. Richard had a son, not sure what happened to him. He
was simply, ""A Loving Man, who always shared, and showed, his love
for God. At the rate this world is going, we might see Richard, kinda
sorta soon!!!!
@@vivianclaiborne7653 How lucky you were to have known him. Your memories of him must be rich in humor, and spirituality. Yes, the world could sure use many more men like him. It does seem to be much more bad than good in world these days, and it might be the result of the lack of spirituality that your friend Little Richard found so important in life.
Little Richard had it all, looks, personality, mega talent.

Great to see them together . Little Richard spoke of doctor saying he would die (1970), he didn’t pass till 2020. May the both rest easy.
The doctor told him he was going to die, he said when it's time the Lord will take him and he blessed him with another 50 years after this
Liberace was so attentive and polite to Little Richard. Class act.
Well stated.

Agreed! His voice was phenomenal. The force and electric rhythm of his singing could make anybody feel the power of rock and roll.
Little Richard was one of a kind musician. We'll never see another like him. Same with Leon Russell. And they were friends. Ever listen to Leon's song "Crystal Closet Queen"?

I miss old talk shows because they had actual conversations. When a co-host appears five times in a week you can get to know them. Talk shows today are mostly about the hosts and their big heads.
So true. They only come on to advertise their latest movies or shows. The one entertaining exception I find is the Graham Norton Show from BBC, a group of grownups, and a wildly funny host...having fun!
Lol
I was thinking the same thing! We also didn't get to see the "stars" very often so it was a real treat to watch a show like this. Can you imagine being a co-host for a whole week?
They also put very diverse personalities together to make great tv. Putting two poorly-closeted flamboyant celebrities on at the same time during a fashion show was genius.

My 2nd Little Richard interview. Never realized he was so profound! My new hero!
The Architect of Rock-n-Roll, without question
Glad they put this together.

I love Prince, but u gotta admire he definitely took a good amount of his style from little Richard.
