Our house build Pt 5- brickwork finally done

  • CC on for subtitles. Christmas is here and the brickwork is almost complete! Just a few blocks here and there.. Last week was sunny and relatively warm so we made the most of it.. In this part of the series we completed the hydro insulation of foundations on which we placed another layer of 5 cm expanded polystyrene, area close to the surface and above the ground level was insulated with 12 cm of xps. Xps was covered with dimpled drainage foil. Bottom of the canal was covered with 0.5cm gravel to create a 0.5% slope on top of which we placed a drainage pipe wrapped in geo-textile. Pipe is then covered with rough gravel. We removed the formwork under the floor slab from Part three video. We continued with brickwork up to the roof level. The contours of the house are now really visible, the roof will be single slope to the south side to maximize the area for the solar panels which I plan to install some day. Next step is to pour some more concrete and place the roof anchors. Wood for the roof and the south side glass wall is in the workshop and we plan to start cutting it to measure next week. Hopefully the next video of the project will be with the roof on:) Depends on the weather though..
    hope you like this fifth part of the project! Please ask any question in the comments and as always, subscribe for more!:D

    the author does like to from scratch, shaping and trimming wood from large blocks into fine finished products. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxD-QRFQz730FJEh4f9BYSf-nkIMIC9hL_ as another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us dont have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we wont be able to practice the full stack project, is still great.

    I have never seen such a labor intensive method of building a home. Y'all sure do things differently 'over there'!

    • @samsonacc8081
      @samsonacc8081 19 днів тому +1

      Well you don't have to do it this intensively, in fact 90% of houses aren't while still using same methods. But there is no denying that the extra steps they have taken here will serve them well into the future with no problems at all. Apartment blocks 5 stories high with total of 45 apartments can be built in 3 months incl ground works, all done except interior painting decorating and fit out. It works well.
      You see residents of this house will never have to worry about cold bridges, squeaking stairs or floor boards, cracked plasterboard/drywall, mould, airtightness, bad sound insulation (from outside or inside between the rooms or upstairs downstairs transmission), earthquakes, floods etc...

    • @jm036
      @jm036 8 місяців тому

      @@jcurran8860 They are not that conductive, only about 0.15w/mK, when glued with the PU foam glue as in this house, this is the most insulating clay brick there is. Over the whole of it goes a layer of styrofoam blocks for insulation anyway. Pipes and wires go inside channels that are made in the bricks when it's time for that, then the walls are plastered. Sometimes people don't plaster the bricks and use metal profiles to screw drywall over instead, to save time, this also makes changing installations easier.

    My goodness. I’ve been raised in construction in north Texas, and this is mind boggling. The concrete/mason work would cost more than a good new house in my area. I’ve built, worked in, and managed the construction of hundreds of homes from starter houses to multimillion dollar ‘mansions’ and never seen structural work like this. Just looks excessive to me.

      @jeroen81 Рік тому +1

      The way this is built is almost standard practice in large parts of Europe. There are a lot of smaller and bigger differences to adapt to national regulations and locally available resources, but the basic way of construction is seen all over the continent. Wooden stick frame houses are very rare here (at least in the Netherlands). This house is built very thoroughly through and through and probably exceeds base regulations on some areas. The brick and mortar/ concrete construction combined with the insulation provides a very stable and energy efficient building envelope.

    Everything works like a well-tuned Swiss watch, even the shapely girls in the workshop. Of course, the time shown by the clock belongs to another planet. First we throw the concrete suit, ie columns, beams and slab together and then the masonry. In fact, the columns should form a sand-foundation as deep as possible in the soil and not in the air.

    Just some comments mainly for fun:
    - Wrapping the drainage pipe with geotextile looks like overkill (as the layer around the rough gravel should keep any sand or dirt from entering the trench space) but better to be safe than sorry! (Or is there some reason... like your local building code?)
    - The attention to detail when applying the bitumen membrane deserves an award (the Adrian Monk award).
    - The size and amount of rebar required for your seismic zone doesn´t cease to amaze me.
    Great video. Glad you are making good progress! Looking forward to the woody parts.

    • @Jonasmonasonas
      @Jonasmonasonas 2 роки тому +1

      The geotextile is probably not code however you can add it for extra safety to the pipe as the dirt can rub against it and cause a hole to appear which would result in mud building up inside the pipe

      aint no such thing as overkill! :D

    • @lignumchannel
      @lignumchannel  2 роки тому +9

      Yeah I thought about the drainage a lot and how to do it. Few people said it would be better to wrap the pipe just to be safe. Rough gravel I got was not as clean as I expected , we had to additionally wash it so I think wrapping the pipe was a good choice after all. As for the bitumen membrane, I just hope it is as good as much as it costs :) And yeah, amount of rebar amazes even the local people.. The code changed after last earthquakes and is quite strict..

    • @CoronadoBruin
      @CoronadoBruin 2 роки тому +2

      Always, always wrap your drainage pipe. It's been commercial SOP for many decades in SoCal, yet more recently for light/SFR residential but people still avoid it on occasion on single homes or cheaper tracts until somewhat recently. And engineers have indeed gone wild with rebar in our earthquake zone these past few decades.
      Regional differences: We go dimples out on the drain board, with filter fabric over that, but you could place a swimming pool there with that bitumen, and not have any worries.

      @@lignumchannel how come you didn't use TPO insulation? It seams much more easier. And as for drainage there is nothing wrong with overkill if you want to pay.

But it's apparently just as strong as mortar.

      Strength or durability of this system is not questionable. Much stronger and more durable than mortar. This is not ordinary foam but a glue made by the company that makes the blocks, much more expensive too, one can is close to 25$ and is used for 5m2 of wall
      (it comes with the blocks, this is the price if bought separately). Ordinary foam is closer to 5 or 6 $. Another advantage to mortar is that there is not so much thermal bridges. @Tom Kerr No brickie could rival this system with ordinary brick and mortar or blocks and mortar in terms of speed, just preparing the mortar would eat half of your time or you need another person to do it, not to mention cleaning afterwards. There is so much fuss on the first row because it needs to be perfectly flat, blocks are cnc planed to exact thickness of 250mm and have to lay perfectly flat on top of each other to transfer load to the base. If the first row is perfect, the whole wall will be too.

    Love to see the dedication and finesses in the work of you all. The membrane work puzzles me, why? Croatia isn’t below sea level, lot’s of snow?. We use also drain with wrapping, named “cocos drain”. You also will use a sand trap I guess. These building blocks will insulate, but what about these concrete columns? Will there be an additional outside slab/covering?
    Looking forward to the woodwork. Regarding the solar panels; taking into account your level of detail work, I would expect an integrated PV-roof, no additional roofing necessary. Be aware to leave space for ventilation to drain the heat. Take care of solid safe connections, then an in-roof PV-system is safe and looks fabulous. A whole roof covered in PV will give you lots of energy to use for heating and power. In any case you will enjoy living in this quality product of your labor.

      @lignumchannel  2 роки тому

      Thank you very much Gertjan! We build for probable events of earthquakes, heavy rains, snow wind etc.. Drainage is for heavy rain that happens once every decade or so.. House will be covered in 15 cm of expanded polystirene and ventilated wooden facade. The roof will be industrial corrugated tin, unfortunately solar panels are outside of my budget at this time but I will make preparations for it so I can easily install them later on.. It would be awesome though if it would be integrated..

    Svaka čast majstore! Dugo sam tražio nekoga tko razmišlja tako prilikom gradnje i još kad je sve odlično prikazano, gdje ćeš boljeg kanala. Hvala puno na trudu i vremenu.
    1. Kakav je sastav tla, da li je slabo propusno kao npr. ilovača, glina...?
    2. Na kojoj dubini počinju temeljne trake i da li je na istoj dubini postavljena drenažna cijev?
    3. Gdje će se spojiti drenažne cijevi, upojni bunar ili...?

    • @lignumchannel
      @lignumchannel  2 роки тому +1

      Hvala Vedrane! Tlo je slabo propusno premda kad got su bile velike kiše, nisam vidio da se nakuplja voda na dnu rova.. Tako da mislim da sam kopao tik do sloja šljunka.. dubina temelja ce biti na cca 95 do 100 cm kad se završi okolni teren i na toj dubini je i drenažna cijev. Još je također sloj nabijenog šljunka ispod temelja od cca 30cm. Još nisam siguran za cijevi. Mislim da ću od upojnog bunara spojiti preljev do slivnih voda u susjednoj ulici ali samo ako će biti potrebno, dosta je daleko za kopat..

    • @lignumchannel

      Yes, I wonder how it will work too.. Average temperatures are from -0.2 °c to 20°c. Minimums are rarely going below -15°c and max +35°c

    Was that Polyurethane Construction Adhesive being used to mortar the clay blocks though? I have never seen such a method where I'm from.
    If yes, is it as strong as traditional cement based mortar?

    • @radoslavtomov9121
      @radoslavtomov9121 2 роки тому +2

      The adhesive is called Poroterm Dryfix, it is a system produced by the brick manufacturer Winerberger. However you need the special type of bricks for it. It is not only faster and easier, but it reduced the thermal bridges you get with traditional mortar. It is getting more common here in easter Europe as well.
