Flying Whitehouse: The History & Future Of Air Force One
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 лис 2020
- We have all seen the blue and white modified 747s that carry the US President. These are known as Air Force One when the President is onboard (Air Force One is the callsign of any aircraft carrying the President). More than just a transport aircraft, the current aircraft are fully equipped offices and residences for the President, with working space for key staff and even an onboard press contingent.
This video looks back at the previous aircraft used for Presidential transport, the introduction of the Air Force One callsign and concept, and explores the current 747s and their planned replacement in 2024.

Can we agree that the new paint job looks like the graphics of a commercial plane in the 70s to early 90s?
I do agree with you 100% bro👍🏿
Yeah
Hideous
Don’t forget that the 747 also carried President James Marshal
"GET OFF MY PLANE!" :D
@@LongHaulbySimpleFlying i love that movie
That was the one with the escape pod!
😂
Not to forget Presidents Whitmore and Kirkman
Congratulations for 25k! And btw the new 747-8 is gonna be a great jet for future presidents!
The old livery was perfect. Silly new paint scheme & what the hell were they thinking not having the ability to refuel airborne.
They ditch air refueling because they never use it in current AF1, why add it if they never use it?
@@VAALLDDOO2 true but its stupidity to remove because what if any emergency come? Like they need to stay in air for more time because of traffic. Or any reasons. Its okay that I won't be used but in case of emergency nothing is predictable.
I agree that removing the ability to air refuel isn't smart as a just in case backup.
I feel like I'm in the minority, but I actually like the new livery better than the Jackie Kennedy design. It seems more classy. But design is subjective so I understand why some don't like it or don't like changes to the classic design.
I agree. I'm hoping that the new administration goes back to the old paint scheme. It was classy, known throughout the world and perfect. New scheme is tacky, plain, and should be scrapped.
Biden will change it back.
Congrats on 25k
Thank you!
The cost of the new VC aircraft is the same as the design, qualify, and certification of a new dash number. From the outside it looks like a 747-8 but the reality is it’s very different. EMI /EMP Résistance requires much improved wiring and systems.
Such a beautiful plane, no matter who the passenger. There is no aircraft as recognizable as AF-1. 707 or 747. But what makes it that way is not just the livery (Lowey should be remembered as the iconic American designer), but also the fact that it's always spotless and the way it's flown... I used to work across from where they parked the 707 at LAX and I've seen every visit in Reno since Obama.
America needs to keep the current color palette ... it's unique and recognized around the world!
Technological advancement was very welcome. I saw two AF1 in landing approach. 1st was Clinton in its 707 and 2nd was GW Bush in the 747. The latter is MUCH quieter than the 707s.
There are hush kits available for 707s. So I'm wondering, why do you think Clinton was flying in a 707?
The Different Aircraft could have been for several reasons, one might have been the Destination Airport didn't have runways sufficient for 747 operations.
Look around onUA-cam. There ARE vids of Clinton flying in the 707! And Bush 43 took the last State Flight aboard 707 SAM 27000 as Air Force One in 2001 before it was delivered to the Reagan Library. My GOD, folks, all it takes is a bit of research!!!

ALL CURRECT (O K )
Hello from your neighbours Brunei, here the government uses a 747-8I and a 787-8.
Very nice and gaining knowledge
I remember back in the mid 90's when George W Bush came to Sydney in one of the VC25's. I lived near the airport and recall hearing it on my scanner. The pilot asked to descend to a lower altitude. The controller replied, 'Pilot discretion'. No other aircraft gets that kind of treatment...
Sort of like a fire engine with it's lights on. Plus don't airports usually close the airspace around where Air Force One is landing.
Literally standard treatment, any pilot can request to climb or descend to an altitude, ATC can grant or deny such requests based upon local rules (noise rules mainly) and traffic situation. With AF1, airports are usually closed so no other traffic meaning that asking for a lower approach is possible.
Plenty of pilots request higher, lower, faster or slower approaches every day, quite a few get granted every day.
There's no rule or anything stating that AF1 can do whatever it wants, especially not in other countries...
Pilot discretion, if anything is less preferential treatment as the ATC basically says 'okay but you figure it out yourself' whereas most ATC would in fact still determine a minimal safe altitude...
Jeeeeeezus! Ok UA-cam I’m watching the video already. This is been sitting on my feed for months and I keep skipping by. There, you’ve got your comment and like 👍

WAIT A MINUTE ! 2:30 I thought Jackie Kennedy was the one who came up with those colors ? She came along a long time after this plane was around.
Fantastic vlog !!! Apolitical.
I’m really hoping they cancel that ridiculous new paint scheme, somethings aren’t meant to be changed.
I actually really like the new look despite it's correlation with trump. I think it looks retro but classy.
I too Like the Current Color Scheme and Hope it will Remain!
@@jasonbaylor9865 Yeah it looks understated, I like the new look tbh
The new look actually had the darker blue that matches the color of the USA flag. I hate the baby blue color
@@joshdrenth4526 It serves a purpose, it's meant to blend into the sky.
Air Force One , unmatched!
5:13 you got those two photos mixed up. The picture with the 707 and a concorde behind is the one at the Museum of Flight in Seattle.
I don't like the new livery. The old one was subtle but the new proposal is kind of bland; they either need to tone it down or go bolder. I think it would be great if they held a national contest to design the new scheme. Put out some basic requirements and let the American people decide how their plane will look.
I GUARANTEE you that HUNDREDS of suggestion would be better than what's being proposed right now.
I hope they use the 747-8’s for 30+ years just like the old Air Force one because having a double decker is a huge advantage over a 777
The dark red-gold-dark blue paint job in the thumbnail looks stunning! It's time for a more modern paint job, The old light blue paint job was definitely cool in it's days (hint: SAM 26000 in 1962) but it's long overdue to step into the 21st century!
And Jackie Kennedy helped with the color scheme of the 707
Go back to 2:30...you might think otherwise. She was nowhere around then.
@@meauxjeaux431 for the boing 707 that is not a 707
@@tonyaltobello I realize that, but the type of plane is not relevant, because the scheme, along with the colors are almost identical, and it's been said many times that SHE chose those colors because that was JFK's favorite color. How could she have been given credit for something that already existed before she was 1st. lady ? Something doesn't add up, but it seems more likely that she was aware of the previous design and merely SUGGESTED that it be used again, because it was JFK's favorite color. Honestly, I was quite surprised when I saw it on the video, because, for some reason I have NEVER seen that particular scheme being used anywhere prior to it being on the 707, and it wasn't used on any AF 1s in between those two.
It will be a high tech beautiful plane!
Good
After delivery of the new AF 1, the older VC-25A will remain in the AF for another 15 years serving as AF-2, freeing up the VC-32 (B-757) for cabinet and congressional travel.
That's what I think should happen, at least for a while longer. They may be old, but it's not like the current AF 1s have many cycles on them.
Great video! However, why do the VC-25A figures like at 8:15 appear to have the new engines used on the 747-8(and to be VC25B), despite having the body of the original VC-25A?
Wow - good catch!
Because they screwed it up
BEAUTIFULL FLIGHT
I wish the livery would have the Boeing curves on it to emphasize the 748i model. Very interesting channel.I think it's time to Subscribe.
Please make an elaborate video on the new Air India One.
By the way, the second 707 that you showed is actually the one acting seem a flight in Seattle

@@LongHaulbySimpleFlying you could do that on the Simple Flying channel
I wonder if there's a super-tough compartment they stuff the President in if the plane is likely to crash.
Yes air force 1 or just a 747 200 B modified
Awesome video! You forgot to mention the Asian versions of the Air Force One such as the two new 777s (replaced 747-400 versions) for the Japanese Self Defense Force.
Thanks Owen! You're right - there's a lot more out there that wasn't included. We've even written articles on the new Korean presidential jet which will also be a 747-8. Thanks for contributing :)
This video isn't about those so he did not forget anything.
What does Singapore Air Force use to transport the president?
Can you do a story on Air India One
Señor como va cambiando el tiempo cada día sale mejores cosas
What will they use after the 747 stops production?
Probably a 777 or 787, if they keep with Boeing.
The amount is the PROGRAM budget, not the cost of the aircraft. That includes maintence for the program contract duration. Consumables on these aircraft are replaced at 25% of lifecycle, like the engines are replaced must sooner than on commercial aircraft.
Didn't I saw this video a few days ago before the upload date?
We have a short version on our other channel but that was two weeks ago.
Do a video about Presidential aircrafts.....
I'm surprised they are using previously built 747 for some reason I thought it would be built scratch with strict supervision and the specs of the airframe and wings would be stronger than your usual 747.
Why do these not have the longer upper level? The planes they showed looked like older short upper level
Because they are two different variants of the 747. We currently operate the 747-200, while the new aircraft will be 747-800 with a much longer and wider frame
Do every presidential aircraft from each continent
WILL IT HAVE AN ESCAPE POD?
My Favorite AF1: B747-8 with the cargo version cockpit bump and the classic paint scheme. The normal 2nd floor of the passenger -8 looks too bulky.
Given that upstairs is mostly communication in The VC-25 there isn’t a reason to use the extended upper deck. They could put in a bunch of the never used crown modules. The Airlines didn’t order them but having bunks and the galley up there would make sense I think.
congrats 53k likes for this vid
5:50 those images are of the 747-8, not the 747-200 model.
The images are not accurate for either model.
I wonder if presidents feel disappointed whenever they have to fly the 757 variants that are usually used by the VP.
hi
Hello
It was a good thing that these two AF1 747-8i jets were purchased at a bit of a discount. But they don't have, nor will they be modified to have, aerial refueling capability. That is a HUGE mistake! Now the argument is that the current one didn't use aerial refueling that much, barley at all really. BUT the whole reason AF1 has to have it is incase of a war or some other incident where AF1 can't safely land and doesn't have enough fuel to stay flying for much longer. It would be able to refuel in the air, keep the President safe and land in an acceptable area or keep flying indefinitely until things settle down. Again, good that some money was saved but overall it was a VERY shortsighted decision.
They did the right thing to stay with the 747-8 for airforce 1 it is the best plane I have flown on for many years from jfk to Athens gr I have also flown most of the othe ones except the 787 the airbus a340 was a Beauty and the airbus a350 latest technology with all that said I still prefer the jumbo 747-8 to fly as my first choice
I hope they will keep the iconic livery wth aquamarine blue and gold. It looks timeless. The proposed new livery looks dated and just like any ordinary airliner.
Kennedy Blue!!!
You should put one in the Nashional air & Space museum in the District of Columbia since it is where the White House is located at & it is also the place for the US capital, US Federal Goverment is located at & there for would get to be visited by a large number of tourists from all over the US & the world since a large number of foreigners come to visit the Washington DC area to the Federal Goverment office buildings, museums in the US capital City in general.
Actually one will be going to the Udvar Hazi center. Mainly because it would be so technically challenging because get it in the national mall building.

I know someone currently working on the new Air Force 1. As part of his job, he has been on board the current aircrafts. He told me that not only has he sat in the President's chair, he has also been over every square inch of the current aircraft. I asked him, "So, have you even seen the escape pods"? He looked straight in to my eyes and said, "I've seen EVERY square inch"!
He lied to you. He sees it every day while he’s cleaning the parking lot, but only from a distance. He’s never seen the inside, or been within 30 feet of it. That’s the closest any of the janitors can get to it.

They shouldn't change the color scheme.
The new design is actually much classier and dating back to the ocean liner days. SS Normandy and SS United States both have the same color palette and simple lines. Even the new Cunard QM2 follow the classy design.
The "old" design by comparison is a mishmash of Pan Am and United liveries from the 50s' and 60s' especially United's 1947 Masked Mainliner 2 and United and Pan Am's 1964/1958 exposed half metal
I love the old twins and there colors but the new twins need a new design

Raymond Lowey was a far better designer of everything than Donald Gold-Glop Trump could ever be.

Hate hate HATE the new livery. It’s like an inverted version of the colours on Trump’s own 757. It needs to be the classic, elegant AF1 colours, nothing but.
