This Is Why We Skateboard | Nothing In Return

  • Everybody starts skating for different reasons, but one thing is universal: Once you start it's pretty hard to stop. Jesse Barron, Zach Hagy, and Brent Hyden's short film 'Nothing in Return' explores the economics of skateboarding-an inherently high-risk/high-return investment-to remind us that bravery and persistence will pay huge dividends. But remember: Skating doesn't owe you anything.

I skated for almost 15 years then stopped because I got into drugs. During the process of getting clean, I gained a ton of weight. I also went back to school and got a degree in neuroscience which took up a bunch of my time.
As of today, I’m down 50lbs. I still have 30 to go, but yesterday I got back on the board to actually try and skate hard for the first time in years. It took me about 30 tries to kickflip but holy shit I didn’t realize how much I had missed it. The tricks are slowly starting to come back and it feels amazing. Skateboarding really is unlike anything else.

Skating was always there for me when everything else seemed to not be. It molded me as a kid and taught me the slam is part of the climb, and it taught me to persevere. It taught me to get over fear. It taught me what freedom felt like. It taught me to enjoy the little things when and where they happened. It gave me some of the best friends I’ve ever had the privilege of having. Basically, skating taught me who I am.

When I was in my teenage years, jut starting to skate, I watched Transworld’s feedback”, there was a quote, “You get to see a good part of life that normal 9-5 people will never see” that stuck with me.... when everyone is heading home from work at 5, skateboarders get to see a good part of life and in a way, it made me humble. Meeting people I would never have the opportunity to meet if I worked a 9-5. That’s why skateboarders are such amazing, nice people. I got a hernia a few years back and couldn’t skate for 2 long years until it miraculously healed itself without surgery. Even while I couldn’t skate I was still looking for spots everywhere I went. I kept watching every part that came out. I would play skate 3 for hours on end just to be able to flow around and remember what it was like. And while I still can’t do half the flip tricks I used to be able to (especially switch) , i had to have learned 20+ new ledge tricks I never got around to before . Skateboarding is more than a lifestyle, it’s part of who you are. I couldn’t be more grateful to be back on a board. And when you are in that moment: meeting complete strangers and having a bond that is unexplainable. Cheering for a kid who ollied 2 inches or cheering for a kick flip down a set. All are encouraged, all are welcome! A nose slide on a ledge has the same meaning as a 360 in a bowl. It’s all to get that feeling of release and freedom. Art and style appreciated all around. It’s hard to be stoked on my own skating. Every time I’m stoked on learning something new on the board I twist an ankle or something.
I’m only 26 but I’ll never even remotely catch up to most of the 14 year olds at my local park. Sure I can kickflip if I’m rolling slow enough but I certainly wouldn’t say I shred at all. It’s like a skateboarding purgatory or something rn

When I was told my big brother Died by himself on a set of stairs in a government compound not found till after the weekend......I asked to borrow money to get New Shoes, Deck wheels and if I could bearings. I skated and Skated and Skated for 2 days till I couldnt. I slept for 2 days after. Skateboarding for 20 years has been my escape. I feel what hes putting down 2m 34sec

21 years in. Women have come and gone. Jobs have been and gone. Loads of ups loads of downs. A serious car crash in 2004 messed my legs up and after some metal was added to my boney bits the only think I could think about doing was skating. My constant. My love. Thank you skateboarding,
