What is the most important event in the history of skateboarding? What video should we make next?!
If you enjoy our videos --> Subscribe: ua-cam.com/users/ShredzShop
My teacher had the roller derby skateboard when I was in high school thought it was the coolest s***
That's so rad! I always keep my eye out for them on Ebay.
The most important event in history is the Z-Boyz competing in the 1975 Del Mar Nationals. This woke up the beast.
Grew up with H-Street videos and boards from 1989 to 1992. From that brand came out Plan B, Carroll (Lakai), Miller (Planet Earth), Sal Barbier, D Way, Matt Hensley and more. What great times!
The one where Tony Hawk landed his first 900 because it lead to the rise of T H P S
I grew up in the VHS era when bonelesses and jumping off of stuff was street skating for us. When i saw this guy at the Huntington Beach pier pop an ollie i was blown away. For me and my friends the ollie blew everything open.
Crazy what seeing someone jump a skateboard can do, I remember it melting my mind as a kid as well.
It's still cool!! Punk rock
It was like magic
Fking awesome. Stories like this are what is getting me into skateboarding. Can’t believe it’s just a bunch of people having fun and throwing shit at the wall until something sticks
At nearly 46 years old ive seen alot of these eras. Powell hawk, gullwings, t- bones. Real james Kelch, slick, grindkings , bridgebolts, tiny wheels. Massive jeans. Element Bam, rictas. Now chocolate roberts twin tail, tensor mag lites.
Love this shit and always will, keep it coming. Big love from the U.K.
I love the history of Skateboarding. It was a topic that has my attention from the very beginning. I was always curious as to why decks went from fish shapes to popsicle shapes. Great video guys!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed!! 🙌🙏
@@ShredzShop I was at your store in august I bought a tie dye helmet and a 101 mcnatt sticker
I think the call the fish shapes cruisers now.
I am 43 years old now. I get started at 1993 in Beijing when I was in middle school. My first deck is Skull and Sword from Powell Pelrata. I learned how to Ollie using this deck. I still push my board now. When skateboarding becomes so mainstream, the fashion of skate hits day back to 90s with baggy pants and relax fit clothing. Wide decks become popular, ranging from 8.25 - 8.75 inches with big wheels from 54-58 mm in 100A hardness around. I am pretty happy to see more and more people riding a deck today.
Thinking about Rodney and what he has done to the world of street skating not only gives me insane goosebumps. It makes me tear up a little. The man is a gift that just keeps giving. An absolute legend. I remember watching Almost Round 3 over and over and over again when I was a kid. Rodney's part is incredible.
I think skating is not only getting more technical than ever, but I think we are seeing a trend of people going back to how things started. Look at Andy Anderson. He skates a giant ass board and does a lot of what kids were doing in the early 80s. Skaters like Mike V are starting to be looked up to again and people are skating 9'' boards with rails and skating pools.
I totally agree. I wonder where skateboarding would be if Rodney was never born. I’m sure it would have eventually progressed into what it is now but I think it would be a much slower progression
The streetwear clothing and culture tends to be cyclic and we often see styles of previous decades being re-lived with a bit more of a modern twist so I presume that due to the connection that streetwear clothing and culture share with skateboarding we could possibly be seeing some of the 80's, 90's, etc... skate culture being reborn with a modern twist aswell.... It would be nice to see!
Thats an interesting take! Its been cool to see the cycles of skate clothing for sure.
I feel like we're already seeing that. I mean Polar Big Boys are just JNCOS for kids lolol
I feel like eventually all fashion from every era is gonna meld into one because you can only modernize something so much
This as a full length document would be amazing!
🙏
Agreed
Something like Joe Kid on a Stingray for BMX.
i really love how in 2021/2022 we have informative videos on youtube about skateboarding. youalways get to learn something, rather than just watch footage. back in the old days you could only watch grainy skate videos and not even really see how people are even doing tricks. now we can just learn everything about anything. great videos man
52 yr old skater myself , grew up watching downhill slalom on wide world of sport.hetchy won. 3"wide slalom wheels .i had bennet, tracker , even kryptonite was big.good old days.
🙏rad!
@@ShredzShop My Dad had a Downhill board that was 6 feet long and shaped like a Skinny Surfboard. Santa Cruze, was I think the name and they used 3 thin 1 inch wide strips of tape on a wood flatter board. He wore standard Converse OX or a knock off then after running shoes (in track and Cross Country) the pair after his Adidas Country got a midsole to them like his Nike Waffles and New Balance 512 shoes and he could not grip the board wearing the too worn in for running pairs of those shoes had too thick a sole. The other Board he had later and until I was a teen and it got sold, though he did not skate anymore after 1984 and joining the army was a Convex Skateboard with these Sure Grip Wheels that had fully sealed bearings but the wide type, he used what he knew at the time more for true Slalom and that was sealed bearings. He was living until his 20's in Lompoc California where this one hill was perfect to skate at this lower gentle grade for about a good 3 miles. I wish I had his old first board from age 12 in1972, a Fiberglass Pentch top with both Trucks and open bearing rubber wheels made for a roller Skate but that he bought on its own. The board was nice, for somebody under 115 pounds, the board flexed and twisted just right so that they could do things it would take a bigger person much more to do on a stiffer wood bord, yes this was probably a kid's to young teen sized board. I wish that they still made a Skateboard with this type of soft clear fiberglass board, they would be nice for downhill use with a smaller downhill wheel that is not too small. That was the only skateboard I could ever get to use work well for me and do slalom stuff with.
im glad frankie hill got a shoutout he was ahead of his time for sure
Agreed, he is underrated for the progression of video parts over the years. So much gnarly stuff and then faded away because of an injury (I believe).
The Mile V pig board was advertised as a double kicktail, no nose. Took ollieing to another level. No matter how hard you tried you front foot never come off
🔥🔥A game changer for sure.
Val surf was the local skate shop in the town I first started skating in. To hear it as an honorable mention is crazy
Awesome! 🙌legendary shop!
A cool, short history of skateboarding, I am 62 now and still get my board out and hit the park once in a while, but I have seen skateboards come from steel wheels to what they are today.
Kind of surprised that you didn't bring up skateboard pioneers like, Guy Grundy or Russ Howell though, but non the less, Right On, and Good Job, Stay Stoked! 🤙
The crazy part is I grew up outside Philly in Delaware County like literally there’s a spot 10 minutes from Philly in the suburbs in this video which I think is funny @00:12
I'm 28 and have never heard of any companies from that last "niche" list mentioned lol. I picked up skating again in 2021, when I had dropped it in 2012-14 so its been a while lol. Coming back to it as a young adult, I noticed companies in this industry are incredibly volatile
Yea there’s always been a unwritten rule that board brands can be successful for around 20 years before dropping off.
I feel like with social media and the internet we’re gonna see that get cut down to like 10 years.
I’m 42. I came into skateboarding in ‘96. The late 90s/early 2000s was an amazing time, but I really like where things are now.
The young dudes today have so much love for past eras while simultaneously pushing it forward.
You can get your hands on crazy 80s style shapes or 40mm wheels. We’ve got all of the great things from the past AND rapidly evolving technologies.
It’s a great time to skate.
It’s always a good day when there’s a new Shredz video 😎.
Thank you for watching!! 🙏
@@ShredzShop Always.
I think skateboarding is gonna go with wider decks and trucks and glowing grafics that you can do rail trick's on with no demage on the grafic, some special wheels that still work the same but don't make you fall when you get wheel bites and the smoothest cheap bearings that don't get dirt in them and grip tapes that don't rip your shoes, or shoes made of a special leather that can last for years. Well what I wish for...
Loved watching this & seeing the old “Animal Chin” graphic. I still have an old folder from school with the “Have You Seen Him” sticker
🔥🔥🔥
Great job guys, such a cool trip down skateboarding lane!
Interesting stuff. What about longboards and the different longboard cultures/disciplines, though? They're tapping right back in to skating's sidewalk surfing roots.
Really appreciate this type of videos that shares history about skateboarding, loud shouts from Manila Philippines 🤘🤣
Damn! Thats so rad! Maybe we'll make a skate trip to the Philippines one day! 🙏
@@ShredzShop I think you guys should, we have alot of skilled skaters here to think that they are using beat up skateboards but the skills are so damn good. Hoping for you guys to visit our country. ✌😂
I really liked this video you guys should do a history of skateboarding series highlighting events by decade from beginning to now
That’d be dope!
In the early 2000’s, I worked at a skate shop that was about 30 miles south of Santa Cruz, and it was some of the most fun I’ve ever had. At the time, Santa Cruz and Bills Wheels Skate Shop was, and still is, a big deal where I live. I’m nearly 40 now, but this brought me back. I got to do so much at the shop, like learn how to build a deck, and perfect the art of laying down some grip without any bubbles. I got to meet Eric Koston, and have lunch with the Listen Skateboard Team (which I’m not sure is a thing anymore). I must have watched Baker 3 a thousand times! Haha! Anyway, thanks for posting this!!!☠️❤️
Thanks for sharing!! That's sick you got to meet Koston! I'm pretty sure Listen is long gone. Glad our vids brought you some nostalgia!! 🙏
Everyone is searching for skate info after the Olympics. Perfect time for a refresher!
Lol. Pushing Mongol is still WAAAAACK!?! Wow some things never change. Believe it or not there were a time when riding goofy was frowned upon. But skating pools change that. Good video...loved it. especially seeing the still of J boy Adam's hitting the lip.
Riding goofy is pretty much accepted now but people who push mongo are basically seen as alien in skating 🤦🏿♂️
Hey bros shredda from NZ U was thinkin a vid of 14 rad companies wish still goin or somethin along those lines coz fuuk I've been sk8n since 90s and I wish could still get some old brands more than any of the new 1s except grimple maybe hehe.
Be cool to make a longer Documentary on the timeline of Skateboarding with interviews, pictures, Magazines, Advertisement Ads, Commercial ads, Old home made movie Footage/Movies, talking to the people who made old school movies and much more
Not complaining at all, I do like the short History video👍 just would be cool to see alot more like a 1hr-2hr History/Documentary/30 min Mini series
Theres also some real cool 60s,70s, 80s Short movies and Documentaries that people have uploaded on utube, and old 60s,70s,80s News stories on street skating
Carver Skateboards in 1996 has to be a part of the history too, as it was the modern take of the 1960’s sidewalk surfing. The rebirth of the surf skate style has to be said!
thanks for sharing!! 🙏
You’re right, it’s important and underated
This was done really well. So many topics discussed.
The magazines and team video parts dying is just old enough now to be history.
Also if you have any more info of the first kicktail let me know
Glad you enjoyed!! 🙏 We’ve got a SIMS skateboard video in the works that might have more kicktail info 🤓
Thank you. I look forward to it
What about Blueprint!? It's not a small brand but they're European and had a big impact. Maybe you should do a whole vid on Blueprint ??
I grew up a huuuuge Blueprint (and Cliche) fan, I have some family in UK and Europe and was always fascinated that brands could survive outside of California.
Thank you mate from an old guy 51 Lancashire UK ❤
Oh the big pants small wheels days, lol. Those were my days. I remember grinding our wheels down to make them small. And getting my first popsicle board. That had to be circa 1991 or 1992. Relearning to skate now is totally different as everything was focused on street skating. Now it's skate parks and transition which I rarely did back then.
Your topics are really good and you present it really well, keep going with it because your skateboarding history and facts are almost always topics that people who love skateboarding with a passion will appreciate. i think your onto a good thing here.
Grossos love letters was really good with information and facts just for skateboarders and i felt it had found its own unique place in skateboarding that was well liked. I'm not saying be like Grosso, the reason i liked him so much was he was original and had his own style which is the same reason i like what you do. There aren't many skaters out there with the ability to present the way you do buy yourself. The 9 club for example is a great show with a great format and the guys do well together but if there was only 1 of them there i don't think the show would be as good because there not talented entertainers there talented skateboarders. keep doing what your doing and who knows, maybe Van Doren will make you an offer you cant refuse.
Thanks for the kind words David! Much appreciated! We plan on continuing with the videos, and have big dreams for the future! People like you watching and commenting on the videos gives them life and helps us out immensely!!! So thank you!! We're also still learning a lot about structuring videos, editing and presenting them! So hopefully the videos get better as we move forwards!
For the roots and love of skateboarding this video deserves more love.🤟🏼
🙏 Glad you enjoy!!
Honeythunder specifically said "switch mongo" not just pushing mongo on the regs... there's a huge difference and I'd say Honeythunder is in the clear. Mongo is whack but acceptable if pushing switch.
keep up the amazing content dude this is the best
Thank you!! Hyped you enjoyed!!
Great history lesson. Thank you.
This is gonna be fire
Always epic history 🤙🏽stoked
Hyped you enjoyed!!
I didnt want this to end!!
Love this mini doc
It feels like yesterday when P-Rod started Primitive. Damn this video made me feel old. I remember when the Berrics started too. It doesn’t really feel like it was that long ago lol
Time flies when you’re having fun!!
I need a Brief History on Shredz Shop.
We're going to do a video on the shop when/if we hit 50K subs! 🤭
@@ShredzShop nice. It took 4 years for me to get to 2K so with that math it would take me 100 years to get to 50K 🤣.
Take one shot every time skateboarding explodes!
Ayyy skateboarding has exploded lots over the years 😝
I was 13 when Cadillac wheels came out. Changed everything. Traded my Black Night w/ clay wheels for a fiberglass Bahne. It was on...
Love this video this made my day🤘🏻
Awesome!! Thanks you! Hyped you enjoyed!!
Beautiful video!
Always got love for a new Shredz video.
🔥 🔥 🔥 🙏
I usually save your videos for while I get ready for work bc they get me stoked to go into my dismal job : Ty always a great flick . P.s , wash your ass
Glad you enjoy the vids!! They're tons of work, and it's nice to hear people enjoy them!! Thanks for watching!
Haha.....I remember my first real skateboard in like 99 give or take has 52mm wheels and they was huge! Also Im a switch rider who never knew i pushed mongo until recently! Makes sense why it seemed so hard for me to push then geat ready for a trick quickly
I'm glad I grew up in the era of big pants instead of the era of tiny shorts.
haha fair!
Bro im so glad I stuck around till the end
It was THE most important part of this history lesson:
“Pushing mongo IS whack”
I couldnt of said it better myself
It was called the Barnyard though, not the animal farm. Pretty important thing to mess up
I really miss Tracker Trucks, I loved skating Agro`s back in the early 90`s...
It was either hangout with the hoodlums or skate and chill at elementary/middle and high school
Skateboarding well go when ever we're ready because we are the trend setters.
Nice to see Frankie Hill remembered. He was ahead of his time; or - at least? He was at the very fore-front of it.
Cheers guys
Love to see all the Frankie Hill love pop up in different videos’ comments! 🙏 thanks for watching and commenting! 🙌
Looking back on everything we we're so blessed and fortunate as kid's to be alive in the 1999 2000 Era of Skateboarding & Video Games & Heavy Metal man those were the days to be alive living I don't none of us as teenagers and kids really realized how fortunate and lucky we were to be apart of and have what we had back in that day period and time man such a Beautifull magical epic time that will forever be engrained in us all I'm a middle aged man now I'll never forget those times we once had Let's all keep it alive and Thrash 🤘🏻🤙🏻🛹💀♥️🩸☮️💯
I'm 49. I hate small hard wheels. My deck currently has Pacer wheels on it from 91ish - they are massive and soft.
Good times.
HOSOI = G.O.A.T.
I am waiting
Proud Mall-grabber here. I’m old and I don’t care what people think of me anymore. But I draw the line at Mongo. 😂
We're just teasin'!! 😝 ❤️
I just started skateboarding last year my favorite brand so far is real skateboard spitfire
Only complaint is you didn't mention some big skateboarding achievements like tony hawks 900
Yea
great video but, you can not do a skateboarding history video without mentioning Jay Adams. How the contest tricks in the early 70s were handstands, no shoes and tic tacing. Jay brought aggressive surf curves, hands on the pavement, style to magazines.
I know Supreme has gotten too big for it’s britches, but it still has a place in history wether you like them or not, so I was wondering why they were left out?
Let's Jam at the skate garden!
one of my fav skate films is Inside out, by Carhart
Sick vid
Can’t wait
Skateboard na veia dos irmãos!!!!!
Shortys guilty was one of my favorites
I wanna see a video on Welcome skateboards. They're one of my favourite brands
12:46 that the SICKEST thing ive ever seen
tyson’s baker 4 part playing in the background ❄️
👀👀
great vid but the randolph 720 was the first skate shoe vans followed very shortly after also etnies is the first shoe company to produce a pro model in 1988 with the natas 1 and vans made the half cab in 93 their first
The Randy 720's were the first marketed skate shoe, but Levi says the Vans era is "the first skater designed shoe" being designed by Peralta & Alva. Probably could have been clearer on it. He also does mention the Natas Etnies shoe before the Half Cab (around the 9:24 mark). 👊 👊 🔥
Should've added the year some assholes children declared the "mall grab" a bad thing and made carrying a skateboard just that much more annoying and inconvinient.
😝 He's just teasin'!
Pretty cool video guys 👍. Was it the mic? Was Levi tired? Sick? (Hope not). I don't know, Levi seemed less enwrgetic than usual. Stay safe 🤘
We had some mic issues on this one! It'll be fixed for the future 👊
@@ShredzShop No worries. Sound was good. 🤘
Vision had the double kick model a solid year before world so ya can't give world the props on that cos I had a double vision in the summer of 88
That flickering bulb in the background of every video is just a marketing technique.
:S :S We actually constantly have problems with the lights at the shop.
@@ShredzShop it gives the shop some character though so I dig it. I have the same issue with lights in my kitchen. I’m sure the wiring from 1972 is a fire hazard to my house at this point.
You should totally do hopps !
You missed z roller trucks 😆Mark Lake nightmare board,G&S foam decks, Powell second hand decks sold as clocks and everyone thought Natas's name was just Satan backwards
Levi! When is your pro-model dropping?!??!?! Whats the graphic?!?!
Levi gave up on being pro and is just looking to sell out at this point... Let us know if you have friends that work at Vitamin Water...
The dog on the surfboard😭😭
Very great video keep it up
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed!! 🙏 🔥
Hopefully it goes back to the fun mid 80's
Heroin and Shake Junt are great brands
Big Hills, Huge Wheels, & Leathers !
Great video
I remember bowl riding and then someone got air while grabbing the board this was in the late 70s
You forgot BeEasy. That's a quality brand right there
although it's in French,I saw a red cross report from 1948 about children in Paris after WW2, and the author saw some kids who had nailed roller skate wheels to a board," .....and they seemed to be having enormous fun on their "skateboard"
That's epic!
Tilt mode!!!!
CARPET SKATEBOARD COMPANY, HEROINE SKATEBOARDS, BUTTER SKATEBOARDS, ILLEGAL CIV, etc...
Pressing and art tagging your own decks?
love you skateboarding
i love this! the audio is pretty quiet tho. keep shreding
Sorry about that! Gonna have it fixed in other vids! Thanks for the input!
